Just saw an snippet of Suleika Jaouad with Stephen Colbert saying someone advised her to live every day like it was her last but she found it exhausting and thought it'd be chaos if everyone did that and she chose to live every day like it was her first instead and ohhh.

I’ve been thinking recently that the people I admire most are not those who bend reality to their will, but who accept it and find creative ways to engage with it. I think that’s my definition of resilience: to accept what’s happening moment to moment, and to allow for necessary adjustments, to pivot, to find relief, to cultivate small joys.

Gloria Steinem's Women's Circle :: Suleika Jaouad
+
My joy this week was being invited to Gloria Steinem’s house to be part of one of her talking circles, which she’s been hosting for decades and decades. So much history has happened in that living room, and so many extraordinary friendships and movements were born out of those talking circles. It’s where the idea for Ms. Magazine was born, and Equality Now, and the Meteor too.
We quickly dove into one of the most powerful and electrifying conversations I’ve ever had. There was no stated agenda—it unfolded organically and was so wide-ranging. We talked about beauty, aging, menopause, loss and grief. Bobbi Brown, the cosmetics founder, talked about being made to feel ugly when she was young, and why she was so drawn to an approach to make up that does not erase your imperfections, but that makes you feel and look gorgeously yourself. Gloria talked about how being perceived as beautiful can also be destructive—how in her younger years, she would go and give a talk, and the journalists would write about what she was wearing and how she looked rather than what she said, and how degrading and infuriating that felt. I talked about sharing vulnerably and the reverberations that come of it—the kind of thing I see all the time in this community.
It took place on Monday during the eclipse. We had intended to watch it—there was a little table with eclipse glasses on it and everything. But everyone was so present and engaged that we completely forgot about the eclipse and missed it all together. And I wasn’t even the slightest bit disappointed—the eclipse was eclipsed by these glorious women!
Okay, that’s my huge, glorious joy for this week! What about you? What’s one joy from the week—big or small—you’d like to hold onto?

The star—who recently launched Atelier Jolie, a fashion line and retail space—made her debut as a fashion designer at Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards ceremony.
She tapped writer and journalist Suleika Jaouad to be the first person to wear an original Jolie design.
The incredible gown was made out of delicately pleated fabric in a luminous stormy gray hue. Standout details included fluttery...

Just started watching the new Netflix documentary about Jon Batiste's career and his love story with his wife Suleika Jaouad and I already know I'm going to cry. I love Jon and my Mom adored him because she would watch Colbert every night and she would always rave about what a wonderful human being he seemed to be. And the Freedom Grammy performance (and the music video) were Peanut's first favorite song. Yeah, tears all around on this one.

It’s easy to be energized when you’re in the grip of a big idea. But what do you do when you don’t have anything to work with? Just stay in bed?

Winding Up the Week #422
An end of week recap “The more articulate one is, the more dangerous words become.” – May Sarton (born 3rd May 1912) Aside from 3rd May being the 113th anniversary of Belgian American novelist, poet, memoirist and lesbian activist May Sarton’s birth (see above), it is also Wordsmith Day, a global celebration of people with a passion for weaving words into evocative poems and narratives. Barely a…

''For writers, a day spent writing is a good day—always. A day spent writing is de facto better than a day spent avoiding writing. It means a writer has successfully silenced the voices, summoned that wild confidence, transmuted it into courage, and faced down the contents of her deepest interior, because that is where our sentences are formed. And if we put together a string of days like this, eventually we will notice that we have begun.''
