Haha I love how this one drew the most attention of the bad summarized fics. @liminalmemories21 @welcometololaland tagging you too because you asked about this one. So basically I like to call it 'daddy issue' story. Sorry it's not a kid fic but just more angst from your resident trauma writer🫡It's supposed to be a mirror fic of Carlos and TK figuring out their feelings about the father of their partner. I got the idea because I have a lot of friends whose parents have some takes or behaviours that I don't like for my friends even if they are fine with it. The kind of conversations where you have to bite your tongue because you don't want to upset the person you love by pointing out that something was shitty actually. I thought it was an interesting idea because Carlos has so much reverence for Owen and I loooove their interactions, but I also think that there are things he wished were different for TK the more he knows. The flipside of TK and Gabriel's relationship would probably be very opposite. I think he would strt out being mistrusting of Gabriel and warming up to him more and more while still wishing more for Carlos some days. I actually have around 5k of Carlos' side and I think it's one of my better writings and I still have so muuuuch else to work on to give this more attention! But I plan to finish it <3 Thanks for your interest in my fics peeps 🥹🥹🥹💞 here is a short snippet:

TK doesn’t need to be sick. When Carlos comes to pick his boyfriend (his boyfriend, his boyfriend, he’ll never tire of the loop pedal installed in his mind for this word) he often catches the long hug TK’s father gives him. When bandages get exchanged for gauze pads, he’s at dinner with them, meeting TK’s mother, and still, Carlos watches his father pat his head so casually as he passes him by. When the wound stays uncovered, bright red, Captain Strand will squeeze TK’s unhurt shoulder in the 126 kitchen.  This, Carlos realizes as TK is recovered like nothing happened, is how the Strands are. A mother that talks about the time TK had an STD with a giggle, and a father who starts patting Carlos’ shoulder too, just because he belongs with a son he never hesitates touching. Carlos hasn’t cried in a while. Not since TK was on the brink of dying and killing a part of Carlos with it. But like then, the lid comes loose because of Captain Strand (Owen).

Eddie picks it up, quickly identifying a near pristine compass. He turns it between his fingers, marveling at how well preserved it is before gingerly lifting the latch. “It works,” he muses, pointing the trinket several different directions to make sure. “Obviously.” Evan rolls his eyes in faux exasperation. “Did you really think I’d give you a broken one?”  “No. I just- I guess I’m surprised it didn’t break down, y’know, being in the ocean and all.” Eddie eyes him curiously. “How is that, by the way?” “Nice try, but I still can’t tell. You know that,” Evan answers, shrugging his shoulders.  “Thought I’d give it a try anyway.”  Evan huffs out a laugh, but there’s something else there, too. Something melancholy around the edges diluting his playfulness. “Uh, the important thing is, no matter where they send you, you’ll always be able to find your way back.” The to me goes unspoken, but Eddie hears it anyway. A faint echo in the dark, lapping against the pier like the gentlest ocean waves.

Michelle my dear, please tell me more about the soulmates with the side of demons.

Courtneyyy, I'd love to tell you more about my fantasy fic!! Thank you 💞 It's basically about Carlos, an elemental, seeking revenge on the demon his father killed. His first hint is a lost man that he saves by whooops, kind of tying their souls together. I don't want to give that much away but TK is a healer with his own reason to help Carlos in his mission and get to the demon too. And well if that means he has to move in with Carlos and go on adventures together and maybe dancinging around the topic of love vs. magically-forced soulmate binding just causing these BIG feels then so be it! have the first few lines of the story:

Some days the gas stove means to spite him, too, haughtily challenging him to bring the fire itself if his body demands warm water. Today, Carlos doesn’t even try. He just gets the lighter. His alarm rang at 4:45AM but he hit snooze until finally admitting to himself he wouldn’t get up and switched it off completely. It’s five hours later now as he sits on his front porch, a black tea blend with yellow marigold leaves swirling to the top, the only pop of color on a day that is as contrary as the stove had been. Clouds hang low, lighter in the foreground, but behind the white blossoms sailing down from the Mexican plum tree with a stiff breeze, darkness gathers.

17. Buck: you’re coming back, right? i can’t do this without you

This is one I started on kind of a whim and work on intermittently (prev snippet here). The concept is that Buck is in the hospital waiting for Eddie to wake up from a medically induced coma, after having a house collapse on him. Whoops. It'll be Buck's POV but I'm planning to include thoughts from Eddie's POV as he's fighting to get back. Smol unedited snip for you that follows the posted bit:

Buck does the same, even if he doesn’t want to. How’s he meant to do this again? To look at Eddie lying still among a mess of wires, tubes and machines keeping him alive? But he does, because he has to. Because a second story collapsed under the weight of decades worth of rot and clutter, burying his husband with a nearly empty oxygen tank.  That was a day and a half ago. Thirty-eight hours and twenty-three minutes to be exact. Not that Buck’s counting.  Since then, Eddie’s coded twice and been through hours of surgery for a snapped femur and punctured right lung. Because why wouldn’t it be the stronger one?  “No changes.” Buck repositions his hand, still grasping his partner’s since the night before. He rubs across the empty space where Eddie’s wedding band would normally be. In its place are the impressions left behind. Barely visible lines on his skin that have already become a little lighter.  Buck absentmindedly reaches for the chain around his neck — a [necklace] Eddie gave him after formally adopting Chris — and feels for Eddie’s ring. [Person] brought it to him and he immediately put it around his neck for safekeeping.

9. Completely 100% straight, single Texas father has a night out with his highly toxic coworkers… what could possibly go wrong? (Buddie)

aka watch my shattered edges glisten, also answered here. I know you're always here for the angst so I'm going to stick this snippet under the cut for heavily implied homophobia. It's going to be changed up a bit later, but the tone won't change.

“Sure about that, Diaz?” Gale chimes in, nodding towards Arsen. “Maybe just saw something you liked that you’d rather choke on instead?” 

The rest of the group join in with Gale, bursting into a fit of laughter and high fives as Eddie’s cheeks flush and he feels like he’s on fire. He tries to join in with an awkward chuckle, flipping Gale off and muttering ‘fuck you’ in an attempt to save himself. Something tells him that maybe it’s too little, too late. That the predatory smirk on Gale’s face means he’s got a target on his back. As if he didn’t already have one for being part Mexican. Great. 

If Eddie was lucky, the whole ordeal would’ve ended there. Apparently that’s not in the cards tonight. 

Gale looks him up and down, and for a moment it takes Eddie back to his army days, being inspected by his drill sergeant. Out of habit, his spine stiffens as he stands taller. 

“Hmm.” Gale clicks his tongue. “You don’t strike me as a queer. I’d say maybe it’s been a little too long since you had a good fuck, but – and I’m not passing any judgement here, man – I couldn’t help noticing you weren’t staring at any of the girls that way. Or, y’know, at all.” 

“Maybe I shouldn’t be the one in question here when you’re the one so damn interested in who I’m fucking or not,” Eddie fires back.

You Can’t Take it Back Chapter 18 segment WIP

They got to the bridge, Etho going first this time, then Kakashi with True bringing up the rear. He immediately protested.

But Etho had his reasons. “I was thinking- I want us on either side of you, Strach, so that if the bridge gets, uh, explodificated, True or I can repair it. On either side, you know? This way, say one of us falls in or something while there’s a ghast shooting at us, you have a way out.”

“So all Strach has to do is not fall in lava,” True summarized.

Etho’s eye crinkled and curved. “Pretty much.”

“Don’t I get a say in this?” Kakashi asked, not too keen on the idea of being in the worst position to protect his siblings. 

“Hey, I’m the old and wise one, right? Doesn't that mean you have to listen to me anyway?” Etho asked. 

“Sure grandpa,” True agreed. 

“Hey!”

“What’s up? Drop your glasses into the lava? Your dentures, maybe?” 

“Gasp! The disrespect. Back in my day, we used to respect our elders.”

“Your day was a long time ago. Are you sure you're remembering that correctly?”

“This lady, my god. Strach, save me, she’s bullying me! The audacity!”

Kakashi startled badly at abruptly being pulled into the sibling back-and-forth. It seemed like a well practiced exchange.

“Uh… don’t bully Etho?” he said lamely, internally curling with embarrassment.

True snorted. Taking his lackluster response in stride, she said mock-seriously, “Well, if Strach says I can’t…”

“Yeah, he sure does!” Etho agreed cheerfully. 

Kakashi didn’t like that they had been standing by the bridge for so long and cut in, “Strach also says we should get out of here.”

“Then let’s go,” True agreed easily. 

“Okie dokie,” Etho sing-songed, taking the lead. 

The return trek across the bridge was much more lively. True updated him on the Keralis prank and Etho shared a few corners he was going to cut from his shops and services with the primary purpose of annoying people. Kakashi, who rather liked annoying people, listened as Etho explained the way he set up his unsuspecting customer’s expectations, only to then turn those expectations on their heads in clever ways.

He took careful note, planning to apply some of these tactics to his own endeavors. Word play and homonyms, optical illusions, poetry, the psychology of numbers… there was a lot of thought and subtlety put into his idea. Etho was clearly a very intelligent man, but with the way he presented himself, he didn’t feel intimidating or even arrogant. Rather, he was very casual and  conversational. 

Kakashi could see why people liked him, but still couldn’t understand where his apparent popularity came from. 

They then prodded Kakashi to share stories, so he began using the sanitized summaries of some of his missions. Just a few snippets, here or there, nothing too incriminating. He’d spent his youth fighting a war, and when that was over he’d helped with the fallout, and after that he’d joined ANBU and later ROOT. He didn’t exactly have a lot of missions he could talk about, and he’d said as much.

“Didn’t know the war had ended,” Etho said, contemplative. 

“And I’m fairly certain this war was a different war that ended,” True mused.

“It was. The Third Great Shinobi War,” Kakashi explained reflexively, a little startled. 

“Oh, another one?” Etho asked, seeming disappointed. “Sounds exhausting. The first one was bad enough. Er, second. But at least it was shorter than we thought it was.”

“You really didn’t know the second war was over?” Kakashi pressed, mind spinning.

Behind him, True sighed. “No. Not really. We left during the second war and sort of stayed out of the whole ninja stuff after that. Had bigger things to worry about.”

Etho laughed a little. “Remember how Hatake was convinced Tango was a spy?”

True outright chortled. “I know! I mean, seriously? Tango? Come on man. I was more likely to have been some kind of spy than Tango.”

“So Strach,” Etho said, “for context, Sakumo was really into the idea that Tango was evil or something and tried for ages to make us stop spending time with each other. It didn’t work, obviously.”

Kakashi’s mind was working overtime. Was this why Grian was so hostile? Did all the Inja think the second war was still going on? That lie was impossible to maintain though! People went in and out of Inja no Machi, that's how he ended up here, so surely they would have known about the second war ending. It’d been years since it’d ended, Kakashi hadn’t even been born yet!

And Sakumo thought Tango had been a spy? His-their- his father was far from a foolish man. What had happened for him to think that of Tango?

“Obviously,” Kakashi parroted. “His efforts must have had the opposite effect, seeing as you two got together.”

“Together forever,” Etho agreed. “Or at least until the heat death of this universe.”

“Pretty sure Doc is ready to tie you to a chair,” True said abruptly and rather randomly.

“Ehhh, nah,” Etho seemingly decided on the spot, “I’ll hang out with him, but basing? Gotta think about that.”

Very lost, Kakashi decidedly chose to not think about what was being implied.

So, I haven't been tagged in this for a while. I did do it here, here, and here.

So the first two times I did different WIPs, most of which I haven't worked on in forever. The third time, I picked the top five from each of the previous two polls.

So I was gonna do the top five from that poll, but fifth place had four-way tie. So I guess I'll do the top eight. But summarized differently.

Alright this was fun. Let's see what happens this time.

You're A Dog (I'm Your Man): When your friend refers to your best friend as "your dog" and now you can't get it out of your head. You Drag, I Light: Fellas, is it gay to shotgun a joint in a field with your best friend on your day off instead of going to town and dancing with the ladies? (maybe a cont. of my last oneshot idk yet) I'll Be Your Watchman: When you're reunited with your not–lover in a POW camp and you're too scared to sleep for fear of opening your eyes and realizing you dreamt the reunion so you keep watch over them while they sleep and heal. I Laid Down My Arms (The Day You Came Along): 5 times one man seeks out his friend for cuddles/physical touch, and 1 time the roles are reversed. I Let You Win (I Love To Lose): It's probably totally 100% normal to get hard while wrestling with your best friend and not at all a sign of underlying feelings. Angel, Baby (Tell Me A Secret): Tfw you offhandedly mention rimming to your totally straight best friend but now they're in your bed and you're showing instead of telling. I've Got A Bad Desire: TIFU: My best friend who I have feelings for refused to punch me when I was having a mental breakdown but we ended up dry humping each other inside a cockpit instead.

ngl i'm pretty sure i have more wips but these are the ones i've actually got mostly fleshed out in my head & i don't need this to turn into a grocery list of fics so (◠‿◠✿)
