Singularity

At first, it looks like a modern shooter with different guns and weird creatures and…Nolan North, but after a while it shows itself to be more of a Wolfenstein but with Russians. Then a Half Life and to be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about any of that but the idea has to do with time travel and being able to age and deage stuff. I've seen people say that it's not as good as it could be and it's really not but color me impressed when I saw that you could age a crate to make it all smushed, put it under a cracked open door and then de-age it to puff it up, prying the door open enough to crawl under. Like, tell me that's not cool.

But like the games I said, they explore these types of things a little more (aside from maybe the newer Wolfenstein games) but what's there is definitely fun to see and after this mechanic was introduced, it only seemed to get better.

You find a new element on the periodic table called E99 which you use to upgrade your tool and weapons and health so it's fun to collect. You also find weapon upgrades and blueprints so you can really fine tune it.

This is the Pc version and for some reason, sometimes it'll shoot more than I mean so say a shotgun will shoot twice instead of once, but it's not a big issue. I played it on normal and after the opening hours, ammo wasn't really as scarce.

It does have a thing or two to learn about storytelling though. The amount of times I heard the names Demichev and Barisov, that'd be the plot, it didn't have subtitles so it was a lot of mumbo jumbo most of the time. The beginning introduces you to this Demichev but that's about it, they talk about what a dystopia he's wrought but they barely show the guy doing it. You're expected to just wait until the end for a less than stellar battle and stupid reveal.

Kathryn is one of the reasons I started liking the game, she's a little like Alyx but she dies. I spoiled it for you, yes but the way I just explained it has about the same effect as it did in the story. It's an off-screen death after various time messages written on the wall warning you that it's going to happen and how it happens is-

You reverse the time on this boat to bring it back up and running long enough to get something off of it (as something of that mass will revert after so long) so there's this really cool segment of you escaping a ship that's falling apart around you and you're just about out but over the radio, Kathryn says that that's it, she's going in to get it. I was less than a minute before I got out and Barisov's there like "Yeah, she's gone but we can't let her death be in vain"…like never to be mentioned again, no sendoff, just written out of the story. That is until the ending, which I'll get to.

They give you an end game type ability where you can infinitely blast your impulse. It's kind of OP, I get it but I think if they were going to do that, they could've done better. You know how in Metroid, you upgrade your cannon to go through walls and in Super have this super duper blaster and in Dread just an annihilator. It should've been more like that than "infinite ammo", I like the color change from orange to blue but there's no visual difference other than that, it's not more powerful, just more, it doesn't even reach farther.

'Singularity' as in, the singular game this will have. There are 4 different endings and the main one's last line is literally- "Ha, what'd I tell you, there's never anything interesting here, right comrade." not a one of those endings is good or satisfying and just feels lazily pasted.

One of the common threads is that Kathryn appears alive in the literal last cutscene but in the past, writing the journal that started this whole journey…so many ways they could've set that up, so much there that I liked and was almost special just squandered in that last quarter, it didn't pay off. The way her death was handled actively ruined the game for me even if the story was already shaky from the start with the E99 bomb nonsense.

Okay I'm just going to focus on the pocket dimension stuff for this summary. I sort of checked out during the rest of the episode, except Kybel so I'll throw that in too haha

So quickly to summarize Kybel: Liz said something about Kyle not really understanding alien science since he's only done backdoor surgeries and he was all offended and so was Isobel. Later, he was explaining something to her and she was like huh well that doesn't make sense oh wait I don't mean to say you're not capable because you really! It was cute haha then they had a conversation in the Crashdown where Kyle was like hey listen things have been super awkward and I think we should just go back to being friends and she agreed but she was actually prepared to say that she wanted to take the next step with him so they're stuck in the Classic Miscommunication zone.

Okay now onto the nonsense, I mean malex! Dallas talks about getting more of the fruit fuel and Michael was just like listen I don't care about getting some fuel, my priority is Alex. Go off bb! Bonnie and Dallas split up from Michael to go looking for Alex to cover more ground. They get stuck in a shipping/cargo crate thing that is lined in lead which neutralizes their powers making it impossible for them to break out.

We see this Tattooine Jawa-looking creature complete with a gas mask approaching the shipping container and then Michael pops out of nowhere and is like not on my watch! And tackles the guy to the ground and it turns out it was Alex! I literally laughed aloud when it happened because of course. Alex took it in stride though and was like at least give me a kiss before you bust my lip ayyyyy! Of course, the fact that Alex is in a prosthetic and will suffer no consequences from this tackle is never addressed.

Alex talks about some Deep Sky mumbo jumbo about how he figured out some of the things in this pocket dimension so he was able to communicate with the other dimension. Dallas asks if he's seen any fruit in this dimension and he was like yeah let me show you then Bonnie was like oh can you draw us a map so you two can have some alone time? Which was very nice and considerate, thank you Bonnie.

So Michael and Alex are not sitting on the bed of a truck wrapped in a blanket together where they talk about the drive-in. Alex was like that was our first date! And Michael was like uh was it, because I remember you yelling at me about some copper? Whatever Michael, you were sticking it to Sanders for no reason AFTER he went out of his way to dress up for you smdh. Alex mentioned that he used to sit at the drive in watching movies and thinking about how he wished he could go home to Michael.

Michael then told Alex about the Oasis map and how he wishes he could go there but wasn't sure what Alex thought. And Alex was like are you kidding me? You've been looking for your home as long as I've known you. I don't care where we are as long as we're looking at the same stars together. Then he lacklusterily (is that a word??) proposed: Michael Guerin, will you marry me?

Michael doesn't answer right away and Alex is like well??? And Michael laughs and is like I can't wait to see Sanders in a tux! Then is like of course I'll marry you, I'm embarrassingly in love with you!

We're teased with the possibility that they're about to hook up in the bed of the truck only for Alex to reveal that the pocket dimension must be rife with radiation or something? Because he's been nauseous since he got to it and wearing the gas mask helped but it didn't help THIS and then he shows Michael his chest which looks all veiny and Not Good and he's like I think I'm dying.

Michael gets all upset and is like first you asked me to marry you and now you want me to write a eulogy?? And Alex is like it's not like that! I just want to spend what time I have left with you! And then Dallas and Bonnie get back (I know you don't care, but they couldn't find any fruit it was burned down) and Alex is like Dallas is a preacher he could marry us right now! And then the episode ended.

So...yeah. It was an emotional rollercoaster with a terribly disappointing outcome as usual! Thanks rnm writers!

The Loonaverse can be described as the physical universe where the characters of LOONA live and where the events of the story happen.

By physical universe I mean that literally: its own universe. There are multiple theories that explain the existence of multiverses; from infinite universes theories to bubble theories to parallel universes to daughter universes; all incredibly interesting readings and all with fundaments in real physics.

On the other hand, the Loonaverse is a fiction story. Created by the creative minds of the people working in BlockBerry Creative (The company LOONA is under) and specifically by Jaden Jeong (who is a polarizing figure amongst Orbits). As a fiction story it is undeniable that the Loonaverse takes elements form science fiction and fantasy to build its story so going hard into the nitty gritty physics of how it works is ambitious at best and purposelessly time consuming at worst (though if you are interested in the nitty gritty of multiverse theory by all means go read about it, is mind-blowing). Nah, for the purposes of this (really not that long once we get to it) theory, we’ll focus only on a few key science related aspects:

MATHEMATICAL UNIVERSES

This particular multiverse theory debates whether math is a tool used by us to describe our universe or a fundamental truth of the universe itself. If it were the latter, then the possibility of multiple universes with vastly different mathematical structures is possible. This implies a different set of physics working in those universes. Basically: physics and mathematics themselves may work differently in different universes: It is as simple as is sounds. (Yeah, 2+2 may = fish in another universe, or flying is possible and even normal).

Using this admittedly long explanation for a constant in science fiction and fantasy, we now have a physics approved explanation for all the odd things that happen in the Loonaverse: super powers, climbing in air, destroying the moon, walking in the moon and most importantly: time disruptions.

 SPACE/TIME RELATIVITY

So… time is weird. Physicist can’t decide what exactly is time. Is it a dimension? A physical force of the universe? An illusion we humans use to perceive existence? Does it even exist at all? We’ll just assume it does and use Einstein’s theory of relativity to explain it.

So… The universe is composed of a 4-dimensional fabric called space-time. (Like, picture an actual tablecloth). When anything with mass falls into that tablecloth it creates a bend, that bend is what we call gravity. This gravitational pull modifies both how space and time are perceived. Everything close to that gravitational pull will move at exponentially slower time than anything outside of it. In simpler terms: Time varies depending of your relationship with another object. But if gravity can modify the way time is perceived, so can speed. The explanation for this is long and complicated and involves a difficult choice between speed not being absolute for anything except that light has an absolute speed and those two statements don’t match. But Einstein, being the clever guy he was, came up with Time dilation: The faster you move the slower time moves for you.

A simpler way to understand all this is to just watch the movie Interstellar. They did a really good job of conveying Einstein’s theory.

Of course, physics haven’t been able to prove the possibility of moving through time backwards, only forward. But hey! We are dealing with a different universe where the laws of math and physics don’t abide by Einstein’s theories. Well let’s unify science and fiction and talk about time travel.

 TIME DONUTS AND THE MOBIUS STRIP

Yeah, we finally got here.

IT ALL COMES TOGETHER

Okay I read all this sciency stuff and I still don’t get it: How do all this relates to the Loonaverse? Well, my patient reader, all this science mumbo jumbo helps us understand the main conflict of the Loonaverse: escaping a never-ending time loop.

The theory states that the Loonaverse happens in a parallel universe where the laws of physics don’t abide to our own. In this universe the girls (LOONA) inhabit a space (moon maybe) that moves through time inside of a Mobius Strip, which itself envelopes a large dense sphere of mass, thus creating a time loop. The closer the girls get to the sphere the slower time moves to the point it may go backwards. Because they move through time in a Mobius Strip, the amount of time it takes them to re start the loop is long (though I am not sure how long). In the mean time they will go though their starting point but in the opposite side of the loop.

This means the girls are essentially trapped in a never-ending loop. Think Groundhog Day, Palm Springs, Russian Doll, Happy Death Day; and if time loop movies have taught us anything is that time loops kinda suck after a while.

But this also gives us the tools to possibly escape this loop. Our physics don’t abide in this universe, there are super powers, and mirror images and the possibility of escaping if we understand how it all works in the first place.

With all this science talk, doesn’t that make the Loonaverse a ScyFi story? Well… No.

Science Fiction as a genre uses technological and/or scientific advances to investigate and/or explain a human reality. It usually comes in the form of a warning (Brave New World) or as an exploration of what makes us human (Blade Runner). Science Fiction explores the possibilities of humanity in a technologically advanced future. Because the story LOONA tells us doesn’t explore the possibilities of a technologically ridden future or focuses on our relationship with these advancements, it cannot be called ScyFi.

TLDR:

The Loonaverse is the world and story that LOONA inhabits. It borrows form real life science and fantasy elements to better tell its story. It exists in a universe where the laws of physics differ from ours and where there is a set time loop in the form of a Mobius Strip, which the girls are trying to escape.

Veg Manager has been taking the busy season so seriously that he has been out on tractors basically every night well after the rest of us have knocked off. We’ve invited him for dinner several times, last night Sister ran out as he was fueling up a tractor and gave him a piece of pizza from our dinner to tide him over until he was done working. We just invited him over tonight too, partly because we had too many potatoes cut up and partly because he’s going to be going back out to work later anyway. 

I discovered today that the apprentices invited him in one night because he was tractoring in the field next to their cabin. They were like... dude it’s 8pm. Get off that thing.

He came in just now and said he thinks we’re on the downward slope, though, of the planting season-- the greenhouse emptied mostly out a bit back, and now the cold frame is dwindling, and the major stuff is mostly in the ground. Which means now we can get on to the busy part of the harvesting season, which kicks into high gear and doesn’t let up for months. 

Anyway.

I!!! Spent like 4 hours!!! outside in the sun!!! today-- and I did eventually get a rash but it was a contact rash from weeding sunflowers, and Sister got the same thing, and it went away after a couple of hours. 

I sunscreened myself to fuck, and wore a hat and elbow-length sleeves all day, but still! I actually kind of have what passes for a tan, on my pasty-ass body!!

So, big progress, and I’m delighted about it.

First thing this morning I went on chores with my sister, and fed the big hogs, then swung over to the broiler chicken pasture where B-I-L and one of the part-time employees were. We had to take one set of three pasture pens (the low cage-like things, ten feet by twenty or so, open at the bottom and mesh on three sides with a tarp roof over half of them, that the chickens live in so that they can be outdoors and eat grass but not get completely destroyed by predators in thirty seconds) from one end of the pasture to the other, to re-set for the next group of chickens. This batch had been emptied last time we processed chickens, and there was a group in the chick brooder ready to go outside. So we picked up each pen, one person at each corner, and plunked it on top of the chore truck, one side resting on the hood and the other on the bed, and then the two people inside held onto the frame and the other two of us followed them up the hill, and unloaded it into its new resting spot. The last step was to put up a barrier of electro-mesh fence around them, and hook up the hoses for the waterers (the water is all kept in a big stock tank at the top of the hill, and flows down into little bell waterers that hang from the roof of the pasture pen). 

Sister and I continued onward to feed the young pigs, who were delighted to see us. They’d broken their feeder, of course, so while Sister fixed it, I kept them distracted by throwing them hard-boiled eggs. The price of eggs is so low that we can’t sell all ours, so instead of lowering our price and undercutting ourselves, we’re just feeding eggs to the pigs. Pigs can digest the protein in eggs if the eggs have been hard-boiled, so we’ve been boiling all the super-jumbos, the cracked eggs, the cosmetically imperfect, and the so-dirty-they’d-be-a-pain-to-clean eggs. 

Then a couple of people loaded the young chickens into crates and brought them up. I didn’t help with that, but my sister did, and said the chickens were so excited about the pasture they were eating the clover through the bars of the coops. Once in the pens they were basically losing their mind over how great the whole thing was, which was gratifying. They’re so stupid and ugly by the time we process them, but it’s nice to know that they really do enjoy the portion of their lives they spend outdoors. They can’t really look up, but one likes to think they appreciate the glorious view of the Catskills they get from their pasture hill.

Meanwhile, I harvested all the things that can be used in dried arrangements-- statice, ammobium, delphinium, yarrow, lavender-- and hung them all up in the attic of the granary that I spent so many hours clearing out yesterday. I tried to organize them-- statice all together on one side, yarrow on the other, herbs toward the front, and so on-- but it’s probably a futile effort. 

Then it was lunch, and after lunch I helped weed the flower patch, in full sun, and still was fine! But I took a break and went in and washed the eggs after the sunflowers gave me a rash, because it hurt and because it was making Sister nervous that I’d break out in hives again. (I tried to Power Of Denial my way through it when it first started happening and she still is sort of upset about it.)

Anyway, a busy day. In the sun! I have freckles! It was okay!

Rhinos to return to Chad in airlift after five-decade absence

ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK, South Africa (Reuters) – Almost 50 years after they were hunted to local extinction, black rhinos will again roam the wilds of the Central African nation of Chad, the latest chapter in a movement to bring big mammals back to former ranges on the continent.

On Thursday, six rhinos will be flown to Chad’s Zakouma National Park from the South African city of Port Elizabeth, sedated and confined in specially-crafted crates to ensure they don’t cause a commotion mid-air.

The initiative comes against the backdrop of a poaching crisis that saw more than 1,000 rhinos slain in South Africa last year to meet red-hot demand for their horns in Asia, where they are prized for their alleged medicinal properties.

With 18,000 white rhinos and 2,000 of the smaller black rhino, South Africa is home to about 80 percent of the global population of the pachyderms, making it the springboard for reintroduction efforts elsewhere.

“By establishing a viable and secure population of rhino in Chad, we are contributing to the expansion of the rhino population in Africa, and the survival of a species that has faced high levels of poaching,” said South African Environment Minister Edna Molewa.

No rhino has been seen in Chad since the early 1970s.

African Parks, a non-government organization which runs Chad’s Zakouma and other reserves, has also reintroduced rhinos and lions from South Africa to Rwanda and is planning to relocate lions to Malawi.

“We have been using the history of conservation success in South Africa to repopulate other areas in Africa,” Andrew Parker, director of conservation at African Parks, told Reuters as a hulking rhino lumbered about its holding pen below him.

The Chad-bound rhinos were in the fortified enclosures or “bomas” for three months in preparation for their long haul.

The animals have been fed lucerne, a kind of super-nutritious hay, the past few weeks. It will be initially provided to them in Chad as they adjust their diet to new trees and shrubs.

Security has been tight: the animals’ location was kept under wraps, they will be given a police escort to the airport, and in Chad they will be dehorned and fitted with transponders.

Jumbo-sized logistics and planning go into such an operation: the animals were tranquilized in Marakele National Park in northern South Africa and then brought to Addo, which has better facilities.

Cranes hoisted the crates containing the rhinos onto flat-bed trucks and they will be monitored carefully by vets on the plane for the 15-hour trip which involves two stops.
