Richard Burton once said, "Liz knows only one word of Italian and that's Bulgari." Given her penchant for collecting amazing jewels, we're guessing she knew a few more (like maybe Buccellati) but it is true that Bulgari and Liz Taylor had a long-term love affair. Her, in love with their jewels. And Bulgari? Well, what's not to love about a icon and patron like Liz? It all apparently started when she filmed Cleopatra in 1962 with a Bulgari Serpenti watch on one arm and Richard Burton on the other. She inspired the jewelry house to create many a design, among them an emerald necklace in 1965 and the now iconic sapphire sautoir (worn by Jessica Chastain, along with the matching ring, to the Cannes Film Festival 2013, in celebration of 50 years since Cleopatra was released). She's photographed here wearing the Bulgari platinum, sapphire and diamond necklace (c. 1969) given to her by Richard for her 40th birthday in 1972. Another fabulous, if not also somewhat scandalous, jewelry loving icon was Wallace Simpson. To say she led a sparkling life would be an understatement. When she met her last husband, he was the King Edward VIII. But alas, she was an American divorcé and so to marry her, he had to abdicate the throne, granting the crown to his younger brother, the current Queen's father. The former King was informally exiled to Paris with his new bride and reduced to merely the Duke of Windsor in title, left to live on an allowance of £25,000 annually (roughly £660,000 in today's money). His blushing bride had an insatiable appetite for jewelry and Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels were her jewelers of choice. The necklace in this photo, The Draperie, was created by the former at the request of the Duke, who hand picked the stones himself, with the exception of the turquoise.
