I'm all up in my Ikora+Cayde friendship feelings tonight like fuck

thinking about how Ikora probably took the deaths of the 2-3 Hunter Vanguards she was Vanguard for as badly as she did Cayde

bc all of them she was equally unprepared to deal with

Ikora and Zavala gladly making friends with Kauko after Osiris’ banishment and Saint’s self imposed exile to find him, and Kauko I always write as a Reasonable sort of Hunter. Doesn't have any weird baggage. Runs a tight ship and is agreeable to hang around with. Aparajita Dared him personally and they see this as the best they could hope for of the Hunters passing the torch

and then Kauko goes out on a routine mission just to stretch his legs after decades of dedicated service

and he doesn't come home

and he doesn't come home

and the Legion or the Hidden never find his Ghost

Andal takes up the Dare after that and Ikora and Zavala try their best to ignore that there's a man they don't know in their friend's seat

they didn't know Aparajita as closely as Kauko because she didn't stay Vanguard long after Osiris was banished. They found her Ghost in the mountains

but eventually Ikora and Zavala warm up to Andal as much as Xander does (Xander likes Andal. Ex Pilgrim Guard fireteam lead, they get along well). He's not as tight cut as Kauko was, has more smiles and easy manners. Brings his friends around more. But Ikora always has this distance with Andal.

Its been so long since she lost a close friend. And then Andal showed up one day at work like nothing had happened. Like the militia didn't hold a vigil for Kauko. Like the Hunters don't come by his empty desk and leave card, trinkets, or bullets in mementos. And Andal has them all placed to the side in their own place of honor but decidedly out of the way. And that annoys Ikora but it annoys her more she's so annoyed with it. Of course Andal needs his part of the table to be cleared of trinkets and mementos. Kauko did the same thing with Aparajita. But Ikora didn't know Aparajita like she knew Kauko.

she's friendly with Andal and his silly band of friends he brings around but she's not friends with Andal. Andal probably recognizes that and doesn't pry. He knows Warlocks get all up in their feelings, especially ones like Ikora. Best to just let them work it out on their own

and then he goes out and is killed by Taniks and suddenly he's gone and Ikora is staring at another empty Hunter Vanguard chair. And she realizes she never knew Andal. She held him at arms length and a member of her Fireteam is gone and she never knew him. Regret that she 'hated' Andal for not being Kauko, that he just so casually replaced her friend, is a hell of a thing. She should have been more pragmatic. She should have tried to get to know him better. She should have-

She just should have

then Cayde shows up with Andal's Ghost and his cape and makes a stupid joke when he sits in Andal's old seat. And shit when did it become Andal's seat and not Kauko's?

and Ikora will not make the same mistake twice

But Cayde isn't like the Vanguards they've had. He's irreverent, sarcastic, cracks jokes, and is absolute dog shit at the job. He covers up the last part pretty good until he can actually figure out how to do the job. Not like there's a manual for the Hunter Vanguard. They don't exactly train their replacements. So Ikora gives him the benefit of the doubt. And he's also not like Andal because he doesn't remove Andal's mementos, not all of them. He wears one and its impossible not to be reminded. Sometimes he lets a card or trinket linger at his station. Cayde likes to banter and he's always playing with something, for the first decade its usually memento for Andal left by a Hunter for their fallen Vanguard.

Ikora doesn't know how to be friends with someone like this. But she sure tries. She doesn't know how well she succeeds. She worries Cayde doesn't think well of her. She's so serious all the time. But he teases her the same as he teases Zavala and its clear Cayde likes him. Even if the 'three baldies stuck in one room together' jokes get old after the first one. In Ikora's mind she's the best friend she can be the Cayde. She's closer to him than she was with Andal, maybe even closer than she was with Kauko.

She actually learns how to banter. Cayde might be the funny one of the Vanguard but Ikora isn't immune to the smug feeling of satisfaction when she has a quick comeback and the Guardian they're talking with breaks and bursts out laughing at what she said, and not Cayde. Even Chalco mentions how good Cayde’s friendship looks on Ikora and Ikora values Chalco’s opinion on things almost more than any other. Especially coming from another Hunter.

and then Cayde wants to check out the Prison of Elders. And Ikora won't do it again. She can't lose another friend. She refuses to lose another Hunter Vanguard. It isn't hard to convince Cayde he should take the Young Wolf. Hell, he thinks it was his idea at the end!

then the Young Wolf brings her back his body and his Ghost

and the Hunter Vanguard is vacant for a long, long time

I think it would ultimately divided by how willingly folks were willing to fall in under Tallulah.

Folks who were willing to work under her would be the First generation of City Hunters, so in that aspect she's the benchmark for the First.

In the sense that I doubt all Hunter's fell in line with her she'd be the Second, with the First being all those raised before The City/The Hunter Vanguard being established.

I think it would be cool if Hunters identified themselves by generations marked by who was the Hunter Vanguard when they were first raised

Do we know more or less for how long each Vanguard held their position? Especially Hunter Vanguards since there's so many of them, I was wondering how many years each of them lasted

Genuinely impossible to tell, mostly because we don't have a timeline.

Hunter Vanguards definitely lasted a few years each, though some more than others. I think Tallulah was around for a while, as well as Andal and Cayde. Others may have been around for less, but we just have no idea. Crow is the 7th Hunter Vanguard, meanwhile both Titans and Warlocks only ever had 2 each and all of them are still alive.

Saint and Osiris were Vanguard leaders since the formation of the Consensus, until roughly around the Twilight Gap; then Osiris got exiled and Saint went after him following the Gap. Zavala and Ikora took over then. So Saint and Osiris served during the first 5 Hunter Vanguards (Tallulah, Caliban-8, Aparajita-4, Kauko Swiftriver and Andal). How long did that all take? Anyone's guess.

There are also gaps in between Hunter Vanguards; we know this from the Cayde situation as it took several years for Crow to fill that position, but a similar thing also happened with Kauko for whom Cayde says:

Didn't have a Hunter Vanguard back then, what with Kauko Swiftriver finally being declared dead after two years MIA and his Dare nowhere to be found. Speaker said it was on the rest of us Hunters to figure it out.

So Kauko's spot was left unfilled for at least 2 years and only then did the Hunters (in this case Andal and Cayde) start the dare so some additional time also passed until Andal finally took the spot.

These crates are completely full of Vanguard history books. There are over thirty just focused on Osiris. He wasn't even the Warlock Vanguard for that long before Ikora, but it sure was a busy time.

But it does nothing to help us with the estimates. What does "for that long" mean? It will mean something different to everyone. To me personally, I think it should be at least moderately long to fit in 5 Hunter Vanguards and also everything from the formation of the Consensus until Twilight Gap, but who knows.

Finished a personal piece of my Wolfrider oc, Wildmane and her wolf-friend, Swiftriver!

I made her when I was 11 years old, and she's gone through well over a dozen revisions over the years. Would you believe she was originally a Go-Back? Hah! Well I mean, I know Go-Backs came from Wolfriders, but still--

But I think I finally came up with a design I can settle on, for now. And yes.... Obviously her name is based on the fact this woman would never comb her hair or pin it back!

The Crown Run - Round Three

Dearest readers,

it has come to my knowledge that much has progressed in the clans and many are unaware of the ongoings. Thus, I find myself obligated to report on these affairs.

Many clans have had a change in leadership as of late and these leaders are being greatly tested already in these early months of their reign. It is on great merit that I report of one such leader losing the faith from her subjects. Duskslayer, son of the crystallized Heavenlyglow, has expressed concerns regarding Skywings ability to lead CelestialClan into a new future. Can a cat so young truly understand the workings of a clan as one with age and wisdom? Duskslayer doesn’t believe so. Who’s to say anyone else in CelestialClan disagrees considering there was a near murder. Poor Greywing was moments from death at the paws of Oceanwing and only survived by a miracle. Seems as though Skywing has dismissed any charges against the assailant.

Within the isolation of WickedClan, there have been reports of poisonings and unruly flirtation from cats of higher rank. Weaseldance’s family had their nest lined with silver, which could have only happened by someone within WickedClan, and thus forcing young Empress Fortuitousfate to hold the Grey Trials. Has isolation truly been any good for the clan if its own members are poisoning one another? It’s certainly led to some interesting rumors. Serependitiousfate, sister to the Empress and engaged to Bluepaw, had been seen flirting with a number of cats within the clan. It’s no secret to anyone at that considering to offered herself to Spiderpaw in the middle of the Grey Trials, before the whole of the clan.

Rumors from SolsticeClan have spread far in regard to the mystery of Moon Priestess Nebulamoon’s child. Just who is this kit’s other parent? Could it be the child of a lovebug incident with Sunskip, the resemblance to the tom is uncanny. Or has Nebulamoon fallen prey to the charms of werewolves and found something with Coyoteswirl? Though, maybe Nebulamoon has been swayed by the flirtatious Scorchedwing and brought home her child from the affair. No matter who the parent may be, it is clear to all to not belong to Roaringsun. So what of the mateship required between the two priestesses of SolsticeClan? Are they not meant to take each in marriage or are just that open to discarding their traditions as to have affairs outside of their marriage?

Speaking of children appearing, it is become apparent to many that our well known Jackdaw has produced a child. But with who you may ask? Why the long forgotten husband Astutecalm, who created their kit from clay. A strange combination for parents and one that makes this cat question the child’s future sanity. Is Jackdaw fit to parent? Or should the council look to remove this child? It is under good standing that I would find Robin Swiftriver as a fitting parent to this poor child. She showed compassion during the bake off and has to advantage of a large, loving family behind her. Maybe this shall be the start of the Children’s Protectors, a service focused upon looking in upon these questionable parents and their abilities

I took this beauty off my bookshelf today so that I can start it with some immersive reading (hardcover book + audiobook via Libby). I love a story taking place in my favorite decade: the 1980s!!!! I also love when characters start unraveling the history of their family members. The author will be here for the book festival and I hope to get her to sign my copy!

Caliban picked it up pretty much right after Tallulah died, I believe. So did Cayde from Andal.

Aparajita-4 and Kauko Swiftriver are a mystery to me, so I can't say anything about them.
