Synopsis

This KDrama was aired on October 15 of 2022, going for 16 episodes.This drama is set on a fictional Joseon dynasty, with a strong queen who would give up all protocols as she struggles to make her trouble making sons into princes.

Opinion

This is a very good series, I binge watched it in a few days. I loved the queen! How strong, resourceful, and independent she was. I loved all the characters, especially the queen and prince Seongnam. I also loved how the king was very supportive of her. The series had a lot of different topics, from motherhood to sexuality. It's a drama series. There are no gore or sex scenes. I recommend this series to anyone who likes history dramas.

Today I present to you the Crème de la Crème. Beautiful, pretty, smart and unstoppable: These K-Dramas make me want to marry the female characters. I promise after watching these four series you will question yourself again what sexuality you are. 

Strong roles for female characters are actually rare in K-Drama. Too often they depend on the help and validation of men, are portrayed stereotypical or in unrealistic ways. These following K-Dramas are breaking the standard roles of those female characters and make them the heroine of the story: 

- Hotel del Luna [호텔 델루나] // 2019 by Oh Choong-Hwan, Hong Jeong-Eun // 16 Episodes 

Hotel del Luna is a story about Man-Wol, who is forced to care for a supernatural hotel due to a sin she committed in the past. It is a guest house for the souls/ghosts of deceased humans who have unfinished business on earth before going to the afterlife. Besides Man-Wol there are also other staff at the hotel such as the receptionist Hyun-Joong and the human hotel manager Chan-Sung. The story evolves around Man-Wol’s past life, her relationship with Chan-Sung and the development of her character. 

Man-Wol seems to be a closed in and out of touch character. She loves to spend money on pretty things, acts invulnerable and classy. Her character is strong and independent and as the story develops, we realise, that even in her past live she always relied on herself. The second lead character, the human hotel manager Chan-Sung, helps her to overcome the grief of her past and move on to the future, so she can finally enter the afterlife. 

It is an interesting, sometimes sad, mostly entertaining drama with a heartwarming story. If you look closely you can spot other known faces such as Sulli, Lee Do-Hyun, Kang Mi-Na and Soo-Hyun.

- Run On [런 온] // 2020 by Lee Jae-Hun, Park Si-Hyeon // 16 Episodes 

Run On is a simple romance drama without a big plot line. It tells the story about the average translator Oh Mi-Joo who lives a pretty normal live. Through her job she meets the sprinter Ki Seon-Gyeom who retires shortly after and starts working as an agent for his friend Kim Woo-Sik. They start dating and throughout their relationship they have to face different kind of problems and how to overcome them. The second plot revolves around the unemphatic CEO Seo Dan-A who meets the young art student Lee Yeong-Hwa who starts working on an art pice for her. They too start dating. 

Oh Mi-Joo and Seo Dan-A are really strong characters who have their own live and principles. Although having different backgrounds they both display an independent woman who cares for herself first. All relationships in this drama are pretty healthy and something we can actually learn from. Another fact I really like is that we finally see more than only straight characters. Dan-A for example could be seen as a non stereotypical Bi-Character and Yeong-Hwa’s best friend is a gay character with the difficulty of coming out to him. 

As I mentioned before there isn’t much of an exciting plot line but the development of the characters and their relationship is fun to watch and makes it a relaxing drama.

- It’s Okay to Not Be Okay [사이코지만 괜찮아] // 2020 by Park Shin-Woo, Jo Yong // 16 Episodes 

A story about a sassy child book author who moves back to her old house and starts working at a mental hospital to give lectures about literature. She meets Moon Gang-Tae and his little brother and starts to befriend them. Gang-Tae also works at the mental institution and lives at his old friends house. Together the three start to overcome their past traumas and problems. 

Moon-Young the child book author is a mysterious woman who seems to be sadistic and a little bit crazy. She doesn’t fit into society norms and doesn’t give a s*** about other opinions. Moon-Young also has a fantastic taste in fashion and carelessly of her surroundings wears what she loves (extravagant clothing that looks like she hoped out of a fairy tale). As the story develops, we learn that she has a lot of suppressed trauma because of her mother who wants to kill her. The male lead Gang-Tae has to deal with the difficult relationship with his autistic brother. Moon Sang-Tae, Gang-Tae’s brother on the other hand has untreated trauma from his past, that leads to him being mentally unstable. The plot line focuses on the trio who heal each other through their friendship and trust in each other. 

I really enjoyed watching this drama. All characters are interesting and have their own motives and stories. Seo Yea-Ji is a great actor and fits the role of Ga-Young perfectly plus she is super pretty. I recommend this drama for everyone who wants to watch something out of the ordinary. 

Main Actresses and Actors: Seo Yea-Ji as Koo Moon-Young & Kim Soo-Hyun as Moon Gang-Tae

- The Uncanny Counter [경이로운 소문] // 2020 by Yoo Sun-Dong // 16 Episodes 

This Drama is about a high schooler named So Mun who is lives with his grand parents and is a pretty soft boy. He becomes a “Counter” and joins a group of other “Counter” to catch evil spririts. Together they start digging up the wrong doings of mayor Shin Myeong-whi and his partners while catching an unstoppable evil spirit named Ji Cheong-Sin who commits a lot of murders around their town. 

The reason I included this Drama is the strong role of Do Ha-Na who is part of the counter group and becomes good friends with So Mun. She is the definition of a strong woman who is independent and relies on herself. Nonetheless she needs help from time to time to overcome hardships. Other female roles such as Counter Mae-Ok and Mun’s friend Ju-Yeon are also non stereotypical female roles with interesting and special traits. 

The Uncanny Counter is not a romance Drama but more so an action or fantasy one. It is full of inspirational scenes, characters and interesting plot twists.

Historia

La historia de Corea del Sur comienza con el establecimiento del estado seguido de la división de la península coreana. Después de la rendición de Japón a los Aliados, la división en el paralelo 38 marcó el comienzo de la administración soviética y estadounidense sobre el Norte y Sur, respectivamente. El 15 de agosto de 1948, se estableció la República Democrática de Corea, con Syngman Rhee como su primer presidente; el 9 de septiembre de 1948, se establece la República Democrática Popular de Corea bajo el mando de Kim Il-sung. El 25 de junio de 1950, fuerzas norcoreanas invadieron Corea del Sur . Liderada por Estados Unidos, una coalición de 16 miembros emprendió la primera acción colectiva bajo el comando de la ONU. Las oscilantes líneas de batalla infligieron un alto número de bajas civiles e inmensa destrucción. Con la entrada de la República Popular de China en nombre de Corea del Norte en 1951, la paralización se estableció cerca hasta la línea original de demarcación. Las negociaciones del armisticio, iniciadas en julio de 1951, concluyeron finalmente el 27 de ese mes de 1953 en Panmunjeom, en la ahora Zona Desmilitarizada (ZDM). El acuerdo armisticio fue firmado por el ejército norcoreano, voluntarios populares chinos y los Estados Unidos y la República de Corea apoyados por el Comando de las Naciones Unidas. En 2018, el presidente de Corea del Sur Moon Jae-in (Hangul: 문재인) y el lider norcoreano Kim Jong-un (Hangul: 김정은) hicieron historia en la cumbre el 27 de abril, los lideres de Corea del Norte y Corea del Sur se encontraron por primera vez en más de una década. La cumbre histórica tuvo lugar en la zona desmilitarizada de Corea y todo esto término con la promesa de por fin firmar la paz.

Clima

El país tiende a tener un clima continental húmedo y un clima subtropical húmedo y se ve afectado por el monzón de Asia oriental, con precipitaciones más abundantes en verano durante una corta temporada de lluvias llamada jangma (장마), que comienza a finales de junio y termina a finales de julio.​ Los inviernos pueden ser muy fríos, con una temperatura mínima que se acerca a los –20 °C en la parte más septentrional del país. En Seúl, el rango de la temperatura promedio en enero va de –7 °C a 1 °C, mientras que en agosto asciende de 22 °C a 30 °C.​ Las temperaturas en invierno son altas a lo largo de la costa sur y considerablemente bajas en el interior montañoso. Las precipitaciones se concentran en los meses de verano, de junio a septiembre. En esa misma época, la costa sur está sujeta a los tifones que traen consigo vientos fuertes y lluvias intensas.

Flora y fauna

El país es típico de los bosques mixtos. Aquí se presentan especies vegetales de hoja caduca como el arce, el olmo y el álamo; al igual que árboles de hoja perenne como el pino y el abeto. En las zonas costeras del sur se pueden hallar distintas especies que no crecen en el resto del país, como el bambú, el laurel y el roble.

El bosque mixto se caracteriza por albergar múltiples especies de mamíferos grandes y pequeños, así como gran cantidad de aves e insectos. Las ardillas, puerco espínes, liebres, búhos, halcones y otros animales pequeños han sobrevivido al impacto humano, quienes han reemplazado estas especies por animales domésticos como perros, gatos, caballos, etc.

La Rosa de Siria es la flor nacional y uno de los símbolos de Corea del Sur.

Arte

El arte coreano se encuentra fuertemente influenciado por el budismo y el confucianismo. Dentro de las artes plásticas más desarrolladas en Corea se encuentran la pintura, la caligrafía y la cerámica. La pintura coreana más antigua que aún se preserva es el Mural de Goguryeo, que data de la época de los Tres Reinos, aunque este arte alcanzó su máximo apogeo durante la dinastía de Goryeo.​ La mayoría de estas obras son de temática religiosa, y el paisajismo se desarrolló durante el esplendor de la dinastía de Joseon, siendo sus máximos representantes. La caligrafía se desarrolló al mismo tiempo que la pintura y otras artes gráficas, ya que antes de la invención del alfabeto coreano (Hangul), se utilizaron las formas de escritura chinas.

Durante la dinastía de Goryeo, la realización de estatuas de Buda como esta alcanzó gran auge.

Música

La música de Corea del Sur se divide básicamente en dos: la música tradicional y folclórica y la música moderna.

La música tradicional coreana, llamada Hanguk Eumak se desarrolló de diferentes formas a lo largo de los siglos, ya que cumplía un papel importante en ceremonias y eventos. Las primeras formas de música y danzas coreanas datan de la época de los Tres Reinos, donde se llegaron a utilizar más de treinta instrumentos musicales diferentes. La música coreana se dividía en varios géneros, según la utilidad que tuviera: el muak era utilizado en rituales; el talchum en las danzas con máscaras; el nongak era utilizado por los agricultores y el minyo por el pueblo en general.

La música coreana moderna, denominada K-pop, se caracteriza por el uso de canciones del género pop mezclada con elementos de la música folclórica surcoreana. Otros géneros con gran seguimiento en el país son el R&B, el hip hop y la música electrónica.​ Varios intérpretes y agrupaciones musicales surcoreanos han logrado traspasar las fronteras y ser aceptados por el público de otros países asiáticos como China, Japón, Taiwán y Hong Kong e incluso ser aceptados en los demás continentes. Hoy día este género se encuentra mundialmente conocido.

Literatura

La literatura surcoreana se divide en dos: la literatura clásica y la moderna.

La primera abarca a todas las obras escritas antes y durante el reinado de la dinastía Joseón. Muchas de estas obras fueron escritas con el alfabeto chino, por lo que varios autores consideran que el verdadero surgimiento de la literatura coreana se da con la invención del alfabeto hangul. Estas obras narran historias épicas, leyendas y tradiciones de los antiguos coreanos, además de que sirven como registros históricos al contener algunas crónicas de los reyes de dinastías anteriores. Ki Man-jung, Heo Gyun, Park Ji-won y Yi Eok son algunos de los autores más destacados de esta época, mientras que Gu-unmong, Hong Gil-dong Jeon y Hojil son algunas de las obras escritas por ellos.

La literatura surcoreana moderna se refiere a todas aquellas obras escritas y publicadas después del siglo XIX. La novela coreana retomó fuerza en este periodo y a menudo trataban sobre temas históricos para la sociedad coreana como la ocupación japonesa, la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la Guerra de Corea.​ Al igual que el cine y otros medios de comunicación, la literatura padeció de la censura de los regímenes dictatoriales que gobernaron al país en las décadas de 1970 y 1980.  Gastronomia

La cocina coreana se basa en gran medida en los fideos, arroz, tofu, verduras, pescado y carnes. La comida tradicional de Corea se caracteriza por el número de acompañamientos, banchan (반찬), que se sirven junto con el arroz de grano corto hervido. Cada comida es acompañada por numerosos banchan. Día de Año Nuevo (1 de enero) Se considera que el primer día del año es muy importante y se celebra.

Seollal (Día del Año Nuevo Lunar) El Día del Año Nuevo Lunar (Seollal) es uno de los eventos tradicionales más importantes del año, aún más significativo que el 1 de enero. La mayoría de los negocios permanecen cerrados y la gente se toma varios días libres para visitar sus ciudades natales para estar con la familia. Los miembros de la familia se levantan temprano, se visten con sus mejores ropas y todos realizan una reverencia ante sus mayores, como reafirmación de los vínculos familiares. Los banquetes se celebran concomidas preparadas especialmente, tales como: el “tteokgugk” y el “manduguk”. También participan en juegos tradicionales, como el “yut”, vuelan cometas y juegan a la peonza.

Día de los Niños (5 de mayo) En este día, los padres visten de gala a los pequeños y los llevan a los parques infantiles, los parques de atracciones, los zoológicos, o al cine, para un día repleto de diversión y juegos.

Deportes

La disciplina del taekwondo se desarrolló en Corea. En las décadas de 1950 y 1960, se crearon reglas modernas para normativizarla, en 1988 comenzó como deporte de exhibición, y en el año 2000 se le reconoció en deporte olímpico. Otras artes marciales coreanas modernas incluyen el hapkido, el taekkyon, el tangsudo, el kuk sool won, el soo bahk do y el kumdo (esgrima).

En 1988, organizó los Juegos Olímpicos de Seúl 1988, quedando en el cuarto lugar del medallero, con 12 preseas de oro, 10 de plata y 11 de bronce. Regularmente, el país obtiene buenos resultados en el tiro con arco, el tenis de mesa, el bádminton, patinaje de velocidad sobre pista corta, balonmano, hockey sobre hielo, lucha de estilo libre, béisbol, judo, taekwondo, patinaje y levantamiento de pesas. (News Focus) Popular variety show 'Infinite Challenge' ends 13-year run with open ending

SEOUL, April 2 (Yonhap) — In the summer of 2005, South Korean singer Cho Yong-pil held a historic concert in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. Four months earlier, MBC TV started to air a pilot program that later changed its name to “Infinite Challenge,” opening a new chapter in Korean entertainment history.

At the weekend, history was made once again as Cho returned to the North to perform, heralding a new dawn in the always precarious inter-Korean relations, while the long-running variety show came to a close amid an outpouring of disappointment from its avid fans.

Nearly 70 petitions have been filed on the bulletin board of the presidential Cheong Wa Dae website, pleading for the network’s decision — to wrap up what is arguably the country’s most successful entertainment show — to be overturned.

One “heavy-hearted” petitioner, who “strongly” opposed the closure, wrote that the show had helped his family take great comfort and forget difficulties after emigrating to America. “I saw my mom laugh for the first time since we arrived when she was watching the show,” read the petition.

As its name suggests, the program had its cast members, with comedian and show host Yoo Jae-suk at its center, challenge themselves with various — mostly foolhardy and reckless — missions.

They cleaned skyscraper windows by standing on a cleaning platform mid-air, carried a luggage to a mountain top in China, cleaned dirty laundry by hand in India and practiced for months to compete in a rowing race. They had a basketball game with NBA star players Stephen Curry and Seth Curry, played soccer with French professional footballer Thierry Henry and auditioned in Los Angeles for a part in an American TV series. And the list goes on.

The program managed to survive the volatile cycle of ups and downs in the entertainment industry. It was a steady mainstay on the network’s schedule, largely due to the trendy ideas of the team led by producer Kim Tae-ho and to a passionate fan following.

The 13-year-old show went on air even during last year’s monthslong protest by union members who boycotted production in protest at management’s alleged interference in news coverage.

So it was not surprising that February’s news of the producer quitting the show met with disbelief, disappointment and even anger from fans. But at the same time, rumors about a possible ending had been circulating for months, as Kim often vocalized his fatigue from having produced the show for more than 10 years without a break.

“It’s been hard to keep the show’s original color while maintaining freshness,” Kim said during a press conference in Seoul on Friday. “The decision (to end the show) is not about me taking a rest but about how to make ‘Infinite Challenge’ better.”

   Despite the subtle hint of a possible return, he said he didn’t have a plan to come back anytime soon.

“If I could say I would be back with the second season within six months, I wouldn’t have left the show in the first place. … I rarely had time for dinner with my wife and son over the past 13 years. I want to go back to my family. I need to teach my son ‘hangul,'” he added, referring to the Korean alphabet.

The final episode, aired Saturday, garnered an 11.1 percent viewership rating, according to Nielsen Korea, the highest among programs aired in the same time slot.

During the emotion-packed finale, Yoo Jae-suk said “The program is my life so I feel bittersweet and sorry for fans.” But he added the decision to conclude the show was “necessary” in order to “give more fun” in the fast-changing environment.

“The show has been at the top of Korea’s entertainment shows for 13 years. … Without ‘Infinite Challenge,’ MBC might have been ignored by viewers long ago,” Choi Seung-ho, the network’s president, wrote on his Facebook page after the show’s final broadcast.

“Producer Kim Tae-ho will take some rest and return with a new picture for another infinite challenge,” he added.

SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) — The South Korean government said Friday that it is difficult to pinpoint who led North Korea’s deadly sinking of the warship Cheonan in 2010, amid controversy surrounding a planned visit by a senior Pyongyang official widely suspected of masterminding the attack.

Kim Yong-chol, a top North Korean official, will come to the South for a three-day visit on Sunday as the head of the North’s high-level delegation to PyeongChang Winter Olympics closing ceremony later in the day. Conservatives and families of the 46 victims are strongly opposing his visit.

“It is clear that North Korea was blamed for the warship sinking and Kim was leading North Korea’s reconnaissance bureau at that time,” Baik Tae-hyun, spokesman at Seoul’s unification ministry, told a press briefing.

“But it is also the fact that there is a limitation in pinpointing who was responsible for the incident.”

The 72-year-old Kim is currently leading the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea’s United Front Department, a unit in charge of affairs with the South.

Gen. Kim, a known hard-liner, is, however, suspected of having orchestrated Pyongyang’s provocations targeting the South when he previously served as chief of North Korea’s reconnaissance bureau, which is tasked with intelligence operations in foreign countries and cyberwarfare.

The attacks included the 2010 shelling of Yeonpyeong Island near the de facto western maritime border and the planting of land mines across the inter-Korean border that severely injured two South Korean staff sergeants in August 2015.

The spokesman said that the government is well aware of concerns about the government’s acceptance of the Kim-led delegation but called for public understanding of Seoul’s decision, which is aimed at improving inter-Korean ties.

“But because the North said the group’s trip is to attend the Olympics’ closing ceremony and the government believes that its visit will help improve inter-Korean ties and pave way for dialogue for peace, Seoul has decided to accept Kim’s trip,” Baik said.

In the face of deteriorating public sentiment, the ministry has tried to calm the row surrounding Kim’s trip, stressing that Kim is currently the figure who oversees inter-Korean affairs and has a say over the issue of the North’s nuclear program.

“The government seeks to focus on who could lead practical dialogue to improve inter-Korean relations and bring peace to the Korean Peninsula, rather than to concentrate on who did what in the past,” it said in a statement.

Asked whether the government will challenge Kim over the sinking of the Cheonan during his visit, the ministry merely said that it will “comprehensively” discuss an enhancement of inter-Korean ties and ways to bring peace to the region.
