Chapter 10.5 The Distraction

In which you look for a distraction in the wrong place.

“Get out of my way.”

“Gladly, once you tell me where you’re going.”

You weren’t all that surprised to have run into Seokjin at this late hour. He blended in perfectly with the shadows on the front porch, only stepping out into the moonlight when he heard the keys jangling in your grasp as you walked out the front door.

“Move.”

Seokjin doesn’t budge. Rather, he steps even closer until he’s teetering on the step just below you. Eye to eye, his glint dangerously in the moonlight.

“It’s four in the morning. Wherever you’re going, it’s someplace stupid.”

You scoff even as you press the keys further into your palm. “Well done, Seokjin. You’ve finally learned how to tell time.”

Shouldering past him with a little too much force, you make a beeline for the open garage. Your blood is pumping too loud for you to even hear him coming up behind you, so when you’re just about to reach the driver’s side of Taehyung’s favored green Lamborghini, you feel cold hands on your shoulders instead.

Seokjin spins you around fast enough to give you whiplash. A small sound of protest pushes past your lips as he pins you against the side of the car with little care. The cold pierces through your ratty t-shirt that Jungkook had pulled out of your drawer hours earlier. You hadn’t bothered to say anything when he told you to change into your pajamas and get into bed.

At the moment, all you’d wanted was to drift off to sleep.

To forget.

But now…

“Let go of me!” You seethe, pushing back. He doesn’t move, only catching your wrists in his hands and pressing them back against the car. “Seokjin stop!” He pries the keys from your grip, cursing under his breath.

“You’re going to get yourself killed!” He shouts back.

A wave of panic crests, drowning you as you become trapped in his iron-tight grip. Eyes squeezed shut, you gasp for breath while whispering for him to stop over and over again.

You don’t even realize that he already let go until you open your eyes to find him several steps away from you. The eyes that meet yours are wide and panicked as he takes you in. There’s a tremor in his hands as he holds the keys up.

“I-” he chokes on the word, shaking his head and starting over. “I’m sorry.” He chances a step forward but stops. “I’m so sorry.”

You’re just now realizing that there are hot tears trailing down your cheeks. Hot shame washes over you as your outburst, but you can’t bring yourself to wipe the tears away. Instead, you stare at Seokjin long and hard.

Stare at him and will yourself to see him and not Yadiel’s towering figure. The ghost of him pulses through your memory like a poltergeist.

And suddenly the sobs rip through your chest as the full weight of everything that has happened over the past twelve hours hits you.

“S-Seokjin-ah,” you wail, the sound of your cries echoing off the walls of the garage. “Jin…”

He’s there to catch you before your legs give way.

Together the two of you sink to the ground. He pulls you into his arms that just seconds ago were all you wanted to get out of, and now you cling to as if they were your lifeline.

“Come here,” Jin whispers as he props himself up against the Lamborghini. “Shh, come here.” He whispers it as if you could get any closer, but you heed him anyway as you bury yourself against him. Your vaguely aware of the feel of his pulse against your nose as you duck your head into his neck, but you can’t focus on it as the pain tears your apart.

“He’s gone,” you blabber. “He’s gone.”

Jin cradles you even tighter. “I know. I know.”

“I hated him so much.”

“I know, jagiya.” If you were more aware of your surroundings, you might have noticed Hoseok standing in the doorway, concern written all over his face. Jin waves him off, and the hitman reluctantly turns away.

“I hated him, Jin.”

Jin’s eyes slip shut as you shake and tremble in his arms. “Let it all out. Breathe.”

You take a shuddering breath, pulling away just enough to see Jin’s eyes. He regards you with heartbreaking gentleness, his hands surprisingly steady as he brushes your tangled hair back out of your swollen eyes.

Fresh tears roll down your cheeks as you let out bitter sobs.

“So why does it hurt so much?”

Jin watches as your heart shatters right before his eyes. He pulls you closer once more, almost as if he could catch the pieces with his bare hands. Like if he can hold you tight enough, it might stop you from breaking.

It gets worse before it gets better.

Your head is pounding from all the crying by the time you detach yourself from the gentle arsonist. He seems hesitant to let you go, but he doesn’t try to stop you from getting up.

You wipe a few stray tears away as Jin gets up, hiding a grimace from sitting on the hard floor for so long. “I- I’m sorry.”

He shakes his head, dusting his jeans off. “There’s nothing to apologize for, sweetheart. It’s ok to cry.”

“I just…don’t understand.”

“Why it hurts?”

You nod, avoiding his eyes. Jin steps forward, taking your hands in his own callused ones. He leans forward and places a soft kiss atop your head as if it were second nature.

“It hurts, jagiya, because even though he was an awful one, he was still your father.” Jin’s voice is low and warm. “It hurts because there was no way you could have expected this. It hurts-” he wipes a tear right as it escapes from your eyes. “-because you never expected that you wouldn't get to say goodbye.”

The truth cuts clean through you.

It’s all too easy to fall back into his arms. Nevermind the fact that the sun is rising and your bones ache. It all fades away as you reach for him and find him with his arms already open.

He lets you sway on your feet, keeping the two of you steady as he plants his chin atop your head. A few more tears slip out, but that’s all you can manage. Instead, you allow your tired body to lean up against Jin’s warm chest.

Jin’s fingers run through your hair, gently easing the knots from it. With each pass of his hand your headache lessens until you’re practically purring in his arms. He’s whispering something to you, but it doesn’t quite make sense. It takes a few moments before you realize he isn’t speaking English at all. Instead, a soft Korean lullaby reaches your ears.

“Seokjin-ah,” you whisper against his skin. Your nose brushes up against his pulse point, and you go still as you feel how his heart races when you gently exhale over his skin. Your own heart races to match it.

“Hmm?” He hums above you. You nuzzle deeper against him, feeling the way his chest vibrates with the noise.

Fingers drifting down your spine, Jin leans his head back and stares at the bright lights of the garage. All he can feel is the way you’re nosing along his neck, causing goosebumps to pop up on his arms. He squints harder at the lights, willing himself to not feel anything.

But those are your hands now that are scratching at the nape of his neck. He looks down at you with wide eyes, shocked to see you already looking at him with a look in your eye he’s never seen before.

Looking like you might walk through fire for the fun of it, you allow yourself to push the pain aside and lose yourself in the man before you. Has he always been this beautiful? Even under the harsh lighting of the garage there’s not a single blemish that you can spy.

Has he always been so kind? Since when did the feared arsonist become your rock? Your heart stops altogether when he studies your face with similar curiosity before wetting his lips with his tongue.

Your pain lingers in the back of your mind, waiting for the next moment to pounce. But you focus on those plump lips, knowing full well the way to push the pain away.

He takes a deep breath. “We should go insi-”

“Kiss me.”

Jin freezes mid-sentence, red coloring his already flushed cheeks. “W-what?”

You let your fingers slide into his hair now, utterly delighted as his eyes flutter shut for a brief second at the feeling. “Please, Jin. I need you.”

The two of you are dangerously close. All it would take is you on your tippy toes and your lips would be against his. The thought sets you aflame, burning away any other thought. No fear, no grief remains. All that’s left is Jin and the way his eyes are on yours, searching.

“You need a distraction,” he responds, almost questioningly. “You want me to distract you.”

Will that get him to kiss you? You nod along, because that sounds like it will take you in the direction you want to go. “Distract me.”

Eyes glazing over, Jin allows himself to bring his hand to your cheek. His thumb swipes over your bottom lip, agonizingly slowly. Your eyes fall shut, relishing the feeling. There’s no pain here, just Jin. You shiver as he exhales and his breath ghosts over your lips. He’s closer now, so close-

“I don’t-” Jin voice sounds strained, and your eyes fly open just in time to see the desire in his eyes melting away to amused indifference. “I don’t do distractions, sweetheart. You have the Italian for that.”

He peels away from you, avoiding your eyes that surely reflect the cold shock coursing through your veins. You watch, utterly mute, as Jin ascends the stairs and disappears into the house, leaving the door wide open. A clear order for you to come inside.

A couple of minutes later, you collect yourself enough to head in. Jin is nowhere in sight, much to your relief. You can’t decide which is worse: that you just came on to the man that was trying to comfort you, or the fact that you didn’t get to feel his lips on yours.

Both. You settle for both.

You consider finding solace in Jungkook’s arms for a long time before finally retreating to your own room. Staring up at the ceiling in continued shock, you hardly notice your eyes drooping until you’re nearly asleep.

It’s on the cusp of your dream that you realize Jin lied perfectly.

He provided the perfect distraction.

Because now it’s him, and not Yadiel or your father, that follows you into your dreams.

Fans Of Canceled Teen Show 'Shadowhunters' Are Shamelessly Spamming Jimmy Fallon

What are the odds of winning the $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot? About 1 in 303 million. What are the odds that the eventual winner of said jackpot would use the winnings to rescue the Freeform show “Shadowhunters” from cancellation? Surprisingly, pretty high.

Every week, Jimmy Fallon’s Twitter account sends out a prompt for the “Tonight Show” hashtag game, and his team collects the best in-theme responses to be read on the show. For example, one week he asked for the best #momtexts, and he received the following response: “I once got a text from my mom where ‘You’re amazing’ autocorrected to ‘You’re adopted’ #momtexts.” 

Usually, tweeters stay on message. (Moms do text hilarious things after all.) This week, however, they did not.

Fallon’s Tuesday hashtag, #IfIWonTheLottery, was simple: It asked people to divulge what they’d do with their billions if they were to win. But instead of fun hypothetical lottery-winning scenarios, Fallon’s prompt sparked a deluge of spam from an unlikely source: the overzealous “Shadowhunters” fandom community, desperate to save a show that was canceled back in June.

At this point, you might be asking, “What the hell is #Shadowhunters?”

Based on the book series “The Mortal Instruments” by Cassandra Clare, “Shadowhunters” told the story of Clary Fray, a young woman who finds out on her 18th birthday that she’s a Shadowhunter ― a human-angel hybrid who feels compelled to suddenly hunt demons, as one does.

Freeform canceled the show after three seasons in June 2018, but the network is set to air a two-hour wrap-up event in early 2019. Nonetheless, fans are clearly unsatisfied. If they won $1 billion, they would use it to bring the show back in full, and they want to make sure Jimmy Fallon knows.

They’ve also made other, more extreme, efforts to save their beloved show ��� including starting a Change.org petition, renting billboards in Times Square and even reportedly hiring a plane to circle Netflix’s LA headquarters with a pro-“Shadowhunters” banner.

Hey, if fans of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Nashville” could help their chosen shows find a new home, some light hashtag trolling is the least this fandom can do. So hang tight, “Tonight Show.” Though you walk through the valley of the “Shadowhunters” of death, you fear no retweets.

I get not wanting to be fussed over, but just in case no one told you (as realizing being raised in a space lab this might just not have a been a lesson you got to learn)- kindness isn't finite! You don't have to save it to use elsewhere; you can call it up whenever, so people can be kind to you AND your sweet sweet mans at the same time! DOUBLE kindness woo!!

(speaking of birthdays tho, as a newly minted cat dad, are you gonna celebrate Darknesses "gotcha"-day in the future??)

My kindness is finite.

Don’t mind him��Shadow still gets uncomfortable and grumpy when people are nice to him. It’s why I have to be an asshole at least 40% of the time.

… I guess we will celebrate that, next year. And any other milestones along the way.
