airsLLide No. 14555: F-OGYX, Airbus A310-222, Sudan Airways, Sharjah, December 2, 1997.
Originally built for Kuwait Airways, this Airbus A310 was returned to the manufacturer after the flag carrier of Kuwait re-organised its fleet and operations after the first Gulf war. Thus, in 1994, the former 9K-AGC was returned to the manufacturer. The latter then leased her out to Sudan Airways via its leasing subsidiary Airbus Financial Services, thereby placing her into the so-called French Overseas register (any tailnumber in the F-O... sequence) intended for French registered aircraft operating outside of the motherland's territory.
F-OGYX flew for a little more than a year with Sudan Airways before she was returned and traded on to Federal Express for yet another freighter conversion.

From Mode S code to tail number

No tail number. After installing your first receiver and connecting it to main flight tracking sites - such as FlightRadar24 and FlightAware - once you start playing with the dump1090 feed by yourself, one of the most frustrating part is that you only get a 6 digit hex code - the Mode S code of the aircraft - and sometimes a flight number, but no more information about the aircraft (type, airline, origin, destination). You can access many of them through the flight tracking sites you are contributing too, but with a lot of limitations. How to get from the 6 digit mode-s code in hex format to the tail number / registration, aircraft type, airline...? From Mode S code to tail number There are quite a few solutions to get the tail number (or registration) of an aircraft from its Mode S code. Here are the solutions I have been using so far. It goes from manual search into online databases, downloading and installing big databases and finally using dedicated APIs to make that automatically. I made the codes I found over the years available, the links are listed below. Manual lookup Some websites have an extensive database of aircrafts, but they don't have API and limit the use to a manual search: - The Gatwick Aviation Society - Airframes.org - FlightRadar24 (if you are a feeder) - Planefinder - just enter the mode-s code in hex format into the search box - absbexchange - no real search solution, but simply replace XXXXXX by the mode-s hex code at the end of the URL (globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=XXXXXX) - Foxtrotcharlie - more than 500 000 aircraft available through the search page (civilian and military) - MilRadioComms - over 80,000 military and about 280,000 civilian mode-s hexcodes in a searchable database Most of them are pretty up to date, meaning their databases are updated regularly with new aircraft. Downloadable databases There are also some free databases available online that you can use locally. You need to download the file and import it into a MySQL database or use Excel to lookup for the code you are I retested in. This is a great place to start, but this is static: there are many new aircrafts registered every day, and these databases are getting obsolete very fast. - FlightAirMap - Opensky-network. There is even a Python library to make the best use of it. - Planeplotter Some databases are behind a paywall. APIs More interesting if you are into coding, are some available APIs. - JoshDouch API - FlightRadar24 API available in Python - Foxtrotcharlie - more than 35 000 aircraft available through the API Other APIs are available to get data about routes and airports. We will cover that in another post. As usual, I very welcome your feedback if you know some other ways to get access to those databases. Even with all my efforts, I have more than 6000 Mode S codes that I was not able to identify, from all countries. Also, be careful with the data you get from all these free sources. Data can be obsolete, there are many mistakes (you see them when you are using them for plane spotting). That great for a fun use, not really for a professional or business one. In case you need accurate data, you should register to paid services that keep their databases up to date. Read the full article

Many years ago I watched BSG and spotted a weird tail number disappearing / change glitch. On rewatching the start of season 4 I spotted another. The top two pics are within a few frames of each other. The tail number flips from 42... to 87... as it passes behind the ladder. #bsg #tailnumber #weirdness

Finally got her to where she needed to be! After 2.5 weeks of paperwork, phone calls, and appointments, the tailnumber was installed and he ferry permit went through. I was able to get my buddy and fellow flight club member, Mike Watkins (https://www.youtube.com/user/N8737N) to fly the Comanche from Anacortes to Skagit to get taken care of at Vertex Aviation (http://www.vertexaviationservice.com) with Lin's team. Hopefully, she'll be ready to fly before March 3rd.

airsLLide No. 15932: HZ-HM6, Lockheed L-1011 TriStar 500, Saudia (operating for Saudi Royal Flight), Geneva, January 16, 1999.
Although she is wearing the full, standard livery of commercial airline Saudia of the period, the tailnumber gives it away that this TriStar is a VVIP aircraft, and part of the Saudi Royal Flight. Actually, her tailnumber HM6 stands, according to die-hard rumors, for His Majesty's (family?) aircraft 6 - which might have a grain of truth to it as the undisputed - and well documented - aircraft used by the Saudi King himself were three Boeing 747 with tailnumbers HZ-HM1, HZ-HM1A and HZ-HM1B.
What is fact, not rumour, is that HZ-HM6 is the second to last TriStar ever built, leaving the Palmdale assembly line in summer 1983 as 249th of 250 aircraft manufactured. She was first delivered to Royal Jordanian Airlines and used as a regular passenger aircraft before being converted to a VIP aircraft in 1990, acquired by the Saudi Royal Flight in 1994.

airsLLide No. 12486: S7-ASC, Airbus A320-214, Vietnam Airlines, Hong Kong-Kai Tak, November 30, 1996.
In the mid 1990s, Vietnam Airlines started a major growth initiative, following the normalisation of Vietnam's relationship with China in 1991 and with the US in 1994/95. While still retaining a somewhat conventional livery inherited from the previous days of Communism, the carrier turned to modernising and expanding the fleet with modern Western aircraft, including a fleet of ultimately over 20 Airbus A320s. For the first years, these aircraft were often registered on the Seychelles islands, for reasons of aircraft licensing, insurance and possibly also to secure financing. They all finally received Vietnamese tailnumbers in January 2006.

airsLLide No. 16240: N750RA, McDonnell Douglas MD-87 (DC-9-87), Spirit Airlines, Fort Lauderdale, March 4, 1999.
In its early years, the US low-coster Spirit relied on a mix of classic DC-9 and MD-80 family aircraft, such as N750RA which was previously used by Reno Air (hence the ...RA tailnumber) and Great American Airways. It joined Spirit's fleet by the end of 1998 and was was later re-registered to N807NK. After leaving Spirit in 2002, it was converted to a VVIP aircraft and put into the Cayman Islands register as VP-CTF.

airsLLide No. 12839: N984US, McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, Northwest Airlines, Colorado Springs, March 23, 1997
Although Northwest Airlines became one of the biggest operators of the classic DC-9, going from 0 to some 190 units of various series following the 1986 merger with Republic Airlines, the particular unit above joined Northwest's fleet later, as the tailnumber ending - typically for the carrier - in the letters «US» already suggests.
1969-built N984US was added from Swissair stock in October 1988 and remained with Northwest until retirement in 2008.

airsLLide No. 9908: TG-CGO, Douglas DC-6A, Aerovias Guatemala, Miami-International, March 21, 1988.
In her long career, this DC-6A just flew for one year with Aerovias Guatemala, regularly shuttling back and forth to Miami. In 1955, she had started her service life in the military as a C-118A with the US Air Force, and was only transferred to commercial use in the early 1980s. She first flew with Conair and with Kelowna Flightcraft in Canada, before going to Guatemala in November 1987. One year later, she was sold to Aero Ejecutivos in Venezuela, before ending up with Transair Cargo in Congo-Zaïre. She was eventually stored in Johannesburg-Rand with a Liberian tailnumber, and after spending some time without further attention paid to her, she was eventually scrapped on-site in 2004.

airsLLide No. 289: N53110, Boeing 747-131, TWA Trans World Airways, Boston-Logan, May 13, 1985.
TWA's long-standing flight 810 from Boston to Paris-Charles de Gaulle climbs into the afternoon sky over Boston Harbour Island. The early production aircraft was delivered to TWA in August 1970 and spent its entire service life with the carrier.
In Paris, TW810 would connect with its sister service from New York, flight TW800 (which became infamous after another TWA Boeing 747 with tailnumber N93119 built in 1971 performing said service disintegrated in mid-air on July 16, 1996). Before continuing to Frankfurt and Zürich respectively, passengers from both transatlantic flights had the possibility to connect to the other service, thus efficiently linking six possible city pairs with just two flights: BOS and JFK with CDG, FRA and ZRH. Depending on the season, the services in question could be operated with Boeing 767-200ER twinjets, Lockheed L-1011 TriStars or the majestic Boeing 747, whereby TW800 was operated by a Boeing 747 most of the time.
