Di Jim Henson, Jerry Jhul e Ramon Perez

  40 anni fa con il supporto del fidato Jerry Jhul, Jim Henson scrive Tale of sand. Sceneggiatura assurda ambiziosa surreale certamente rivoluzionaria, rimane in un cassetto perché nessun produttore è abbastanza coraggioso da farne un film. Dopo esser stata ritrovata nell’archivio della Jim Henson Company una illuminata iniziativa ne ha fatto un graphic novel. Mac (il protagonista) è stato messo in mezzo, è in pericolo, scappa ma non sa da chi ne perché è inseguito e la sua concitata fuga determina il ritmo del testo (o viceversa?). Mac è la lepre in un grottesco gioco di caccia all’uomo, corre in un deserto dove non ci sono regole etiche ne logiche, dove la fisica la fantasia e l’impossibile sono fuse insieme. Si stupisce Mac, non sembra abituato all’assurdo, il suo grado di (in)consapevolezza è simile al nostro, i suoi interrogativi sono quelli del lettore. Sembrerebbe uno psycho triller o un western lisergico, una commedia surrealista o una parodia dei generi cinematografici con vaghe ma puntuali digressioni metalinguistiche. I livelli si confondono, cosa o chi viene raccontato? Cosa è reale nella finzione? Chi scappa da chi? La metafora (se c’è) è del reale o della finzione? La sospensione dell’incredulità è più marcata in noi o in Mac? Esperimento in doppio cieco? Reality ante litteram?. E’ un piacere scrivere di un capolavoro di questa portata, ho almeno 5 ipotesi interpretative tutte giuste e quindi tutte sbagliate, ma è ormai evidente che il punto non è l’esegesi ma l’esperienza stessa. Deve aver pensato una cosa simile anche l’autore dei disegni Ramon Perez che con la sapienza di chi ha capito la lezione di Will Eisner, riesce a restituirci una visione del testo molto potente, fornisce una lettura grafica molto personale e quindi perfetta che spesso finisce per essere sinestetica proprio a partire (ma non solo) dall’evocazione di quel sonoro evidentemente sacrificato sull’altare del linguaggio.

Tale of Sand

When I fist saw this book I immediately recognized the writers names, Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl, so of course I grabbed it and assumed that it would be a fun up-beat novel like the works that they usually had written together. What I didn't expect was that it would be the very opposite. This graphic novel was originally written as a screen play by the writing duo, but unfortunately, never made it to production. The screen play had been locked away in the Henson vault for almost 40 years, his daughter decided to bring it out before it would be lost and forgotten. Since the novel has little to no dialogue at times, it heavily relies on its visuals, which are perfectly drawn and thought out to express the mood of whatever situation.  Henson's and Juhl's personalities begin to creep through the pages, their quick wit and writing styles are perfectly expressed through the entirety of the book, and yet the seriousness and off kilter feel begin to over power their witty themes. I recommend this novel if you are a fan of Henson and Juhl, being able to see a different side of their writing and ideas always helps you fully understand a person, yes they are silly and upbeat, but they also enjoy things with deeper meanings and subject matter.

Just ordered a cool jim henson graphic novel, well it was based on an old screenplay they found and I never knew because I'm a slack fan but he's the shit... So I'm pretty amped.
