STALEY BRIDGE STALYBRIDGE
STALEY BRIDGE STALYBRIDGE
this is Staley bridge
my father's birthplace
here is a picture
of me in a pram
my sister
in a pram
on a big bridge
crossing the Tame river
this is not
that Staley bridge where
the Saxons crushed the
Vikings
rushing back to
meet my
Norman ancestors at Hastings
and we
know what happened there
****
Yes, here we are
up front Mossley
in that picture, my
Mother
daughter of a war hero
pushing our pram
and there, no doubt,
the great cotton mills
still
doing their job though
not now in
their hey day
postmodernity,
postcoloniality
what landscape altering modes
of production ushered
in in
their wake
and here is Engels incliding
text on this place in his seminal
work on
the working class
in England
and here I am
years later, studying satire living
in his monument house
in Oxford Street Manchester
water
under this bridge, water
connecting
us all
Tipperary, Stalybridge,
Mahikeng South Africa
figures
in a Lowry paintimg
they come
and they go
water
under this bridge then
so much water we
tend to
forget about
water headed
to the port of slavery
same water in the skiffle
psychedelia of those
Sergeant Pepper people
magicians of the airwaves
conjurors of
a whole new
line
in identity
fruit of the clash of
working class proclivities
with
transcendental
mind
clash, I say,
but what a melding, beloved
blending
without which
no way this space, or place,
or room
to talk
gone these guys
or finally fading
gone
those mills of my childhood
Spitfire stories
of how
we stood alone
everything reconfigured,
outright repurposed
voices (and their words)
I fail to recognise, alien
strange
elevated above whilst
so out of frame
somehow talking all
necessities of suppression
commandeering everything
stretching
the distance below
to above
to breaking point
viewed from
the Southern tip of Africa, product
victim of
all that this is metonym of
all this place
this life
of which
I speak
ths
shock
could not be more
extreme
(so dark
these river with
their druid name
we cross
all our lives
each
every day
so quietly all
determining)

So Legend of Ruby Sunday!
Warning here be spoilers, read at your own peril! ⚠️
Wow! Got to say great episode this time! Now this is what we’re talking about! Lots of mystery, intrigue, drama!
So I’m guessing Ruby’s mum has something to do with Sutekh? And Mrs Flood too? Are they also harbingers?
I’m liking the whole god stuff with the villains, but how is the Doctor meant to win against gods?
Also I love the dog Sutekh thing! He’s Set right? The Egyptian god? He looks so cool! So Sutekh is a classic Doctor Who villain. I guess Russell T. Davies is bringing back the old school villains. Instead of Sutekh looking like an ancient Egyptian reject, now they’ve given him turn to sand powers like in the Mummy and he’s the god of death?
Rose is back! Yays! And her Uncle is fine. I wonder if he’s out there watching the TV like “What the fuck is going on with that Susan Triad woman?” He’d no doubt make the connection of her possibly being Susan too. I’d love for the show to show us what he’s up to right now. I’m guessing they won’t, it’s 15’s show now. I do think it would boost the ratings though. If in doubt, send David Tennant out! 🤣🤣🤣
So we’re still no closer to knowing who Ruby’s mum is….
Poor Cheetham Hill guy, RIP. Another fellow Manc, and they killed him off in the first part. Very sad. 😢
Ruby is from Tameside? Why are they never from my neck of the woods? I’d be amazed if they got someone from my part of Manchester honestly.
So yeah “To be continued” I guess as is this review. Till next week!

2024 UK Local Elections
So every set of elections we have in the UK, I kind of go crazy, pull an all nighter just following the election results by filling my own spreadsheet. But you know what... I'll shitpost election results here.
THESE ARE NOT RESULTS AS OF YET, THESE ARE AS OF YET UNANNOUNCED
Also, none of what I say really matters, I'm not an analyst or anything, just a guy who follows elections too excitedly.
Now granted, I don't know how late I will be able to follow the election results for, especially with how long it will take the election results will take to come in. I also can't follow all the elections so here are the ones I will be following:
Police and Crime Commissioners
Conservatives won 29 of the commissioner positions in 2021.
Labour won 7 of the commissioner positions in 2021, 3 of which were in Wales
Plaid Cymru won 1 of the commissioner positions in 2021
These elections generally cover rural areas, hence why it is so Conservative. These are areas which Labour would like too see gains in if they are to win the next general election, as many are predicting them to.
Council Elections
There are many council elections occurring, too many to properly follow but here are the ones I will be following:
Dudley - Currently Conservative but only just, a good indication of how much of a swing will occur.
Bristol - The results for the constituencies within Bristol for the upcoming general election could be quite an interesting one as many parties have shown promising results in recent council elections, this could be a good indicator for where the city could go.
Peterborough - Currently Conservative, with a mix of support for other parties, a good measure on how strong strong the swing to other parties are.
North Hertfordshire - No overall control, with very close results in 2021 between Labour, Conservative and Lib Dems, similar to Peterborough, would be a good indication of where new support lies.
Local elections which likely would likely lead to a conservative minority or even a mild conservative
Gloucester - Conservatives have 26 of a required 20 seats, with Lib Dems next largest 16 seats behind.
Havant - Conservatives have 28 of a required 19 seats, with 24 more seats than 2nd place Labour.
Greater Manchester Council elections will of course be followed as well:
Bolton - Labour minority, many parties in opposition with strong presence from Reform which could see an increase of support with the current swing.
Bury - Labour Majority, with Conservative minority and a similarly large local interest party.
City of Manchester - Strong Labour majority.
City of Salford - Strong Labour majority.
Oldham - Light Labour majority, Labour did poorly in recent neighbouring Rochdale by-election
Rochdale - Labour Majority, aforementioned by election results were poor.
Stockport - Liberal Democrats the largest party in minority with Labour close behind
Tameside - Strong Labour majority
Trafford - Labour Majority
Wigan - Strong Labour Majority
Mayoral Elections
All of the mayoral elections will be followed, though most noteworthy are:
Tees Valley - Strong support for the incumbent Tory candidate.
West Midlands - Less strong Conservative presence but often reported that their image in the area is independent of the party.
East Midlands - New mayoral position, probably would have gone conservative in 2021 if it were to run, but not strong support.
North East - New mayoral position, mostly Labour support and would probably stay that way.
York and North Yorkshire - Historically strong Conservative support, probably will stick that way. Region has Rishi Sunak's seat.
London Assembly and Mayoral Elections
What it says on the tin. All 3 polls will be followed.
Blackpool South By-Election
Probably will go Labour's way considering it recently flipped to the Conservatives, historically was Labour and the Conservative running there left on a scandal. Though as always, interesting to see the election swing.

Saddleworth Rushbearing Festival

Saddleworth Rushcart. Source: Alamy Stock Photos
In mid August, the Saddleworth Rushbearing Festival takes place in the Tameside villages on the western edge of Saddleworth Moor near Manchester. It is a version of the church rush strewing ceremonies common over the summer, but this one, organised as it is by the local Morris men is a less reverent and more jocular and drunken affair. Two tons of rushes are piled on a cart and then hauled by the dancers, led by a “jockey” holding a large kettle, through the streets of Greenfield, Dobcross and Delph, the procession ending up at St Chad’s Church in Uppermill, where the rushes are strewn on the church floor. The rushcart has however stopped at every pub along the route with the jockey drinking a kettleful of ale each time. Apparently the tradition directly led to a local term for getting drunk - to get ‘kettled’.
Another tradition states that if women of childbearing years touch the rushes while they process, they will conceive within the year, which is possibly linked to pagan good luck and fertility beliefs. Apparently one year the landlady of the Cross Keys in Uppermill , one of the pubs on the route, tempted fate by touching the rushes, allegedly laughing at the superstition. She fell pregnant a couple of months later.
