Hi 👋, I hope you’re having a good day. have you ever heard of the philippine tarsier, a small, big eyed, primate that is nocturnal and when stressed try’s to unalive itself. I was thinking how about a shut in computer analyst who works in the dark away from people because she has severe social anxiety. Who has to at one point try’s to sneak out of her office for some reason and runs into konig who might also have social anxiety but still try’s to help her calm down.
I hope this isn’t too much and hope you like it. 🥰
Oh my goodness I need to start attaching photos of animals at the beginning of these because these little critters are so adorable. I had a great day as of writing this little blurb. I want to call you 🥰anon, because this is a wholesome request. And Konig deserves more good people.
Void
TW/CW: severe social anxiety, mental health inaccuracies (probably), panic attacks, mentions of bullying, let me know if I missed any.
At Kortac, plenty of people wear masks, including the hybrids. You wear one too, but it's not so much to hide your identity as it is to avoid people. Also it's barely a mask, it's a face mask and your hood but it does enough. You don't really wear it often anyways, because Kortac was nice enough to let you have a room to yourself where you could do your work by yourself. You earned yourself the nickname Void, if anyone retrieves a laptop or needs a program to upload during a mission they take it to Void.
Despite your name, you were hardly as threatening. You hid in the dark room for your own benefit, your eyes often freaking people out when you left the room from your pupils being so contricted in the daylight. If you ever stepped out of the room, you did it at night. The few instances that people have seen you as well. If it weren't for a Kortac hoodie, and your laniard, holding you badge, there was a chance someone might try to confront you, thinking you're sneaking around.
People did try to be friendly with you, but you just wanted to escape back to the coziness of your dark room and tech. Seriously, you hated when you were asked to attend briefings. More often than not you got stared at, or saw people whispering about you. Yeah cause that didn't set off your flight reflexes like a spark near propane. Once, your superiors tried to get you to explain how your program would work to everyone present and you just feverishly shook your head, trying to make yourself as small as possible. Luckily someone stepped in to shut down the idea, taking notice of your discomfort. They walked away before you could thank them, feeling obligated to express some gratitude.
On one such meeting you were early, and able to set up your computer and work before someone tried to make you present again. There were a few more attempts before you were given a presenter to assist and even then they would ask if you could try to present. You did practice in your room, but you didn't have an audience to help you build your confidence. You didn't record your voice either, not wanting anyone to make comments. It didn't stop people from making comments about you though. You overheard some regular human mercs coming into the room, but kept your head down. Maybe they thought you had headphones on because they started to make some comments about you, not bothering to whisper. As if you hadn't been called a freak before, yeah your ears were weird, you had a tail, and your eyes were big. Like you didn't know!
"Hey!" one of them called. You tensed, trying to ignore him. No good, he was coming over. Now he saw your name on your laniard. "Hey Void, is the program I requested done yet?"
You looked up at him with your eyes before going back to your current task, shaking your head slightly, and mumbling.
"What?" The merc asked, getting in closer. Personal space much?! You tried to shrink into the chair, wanting to run away.
"N-no... I haven't." You told him. You hoped that would be the end of it. Of course it wasn't. Before he could ask further, the door to the meeting room opened and you saw a familiar face. Okay, familiar face may not be the most accurate, becuase the two of you hadn't talked aside from the normal work exchange and you'd never seen his face with how he always had this hood that made him pretty intimidating. The merc left your personal space, backing off when Konig paused to glare at him. You just tugged further on your hood. Right behind him came Horangi, who'd interacted with you a bit more. Actually he'd been the one to get you out of presenting your work.
"There a problem gents?" Horangi asked. The merc cleared his throat and backed off even more, hiding in the corner. Konig kept looking at you, while you kept hiding behind your computer screen. Once more people arrived, you were able to hide in your seat near the back of the room. The merc kept looking over at you, seemingly annoyed. You knew what was on his laptop and what he was requesting. You should be going to the higher ups to report it, but you don't.
As you stayed in your seat, your knees to your chest on the chair, you watched as your work was dsiplayed for everyone to see. You ignored rhe merc, knowing he would probably ask about it again later. Out of the corner of your eye, a large shape came over to you. You looked up and saw Konig, arms folded and focused on presentation. The merc seemed to avoid looking at you once Konig stood next to you. There had been plenty of rumours about Konig and his hybrid abilities, but you'd never witnessed it yourself. You looked up at him, and could see him look down at you, giving you a nod. You looked away, swallowing. Holy hell, he was tall.
As expected the merc didn't leave you alone, making the request that you help him fix his laptop. Apparently he'd been watching something that had a virus. He wanted you to remove the virus and put in some protective hardware for him. You didn't want to for a couple of reasons. First off, it was a kortac laptop, a work one, so he'd been using it inappropriately. Second, if you do work on a work laptop, you're supposed to log it as it is additonal work and your contract requires direct payment for it. Third, the merc wanted it all done under the table and doing that could get you into a lot of shit if you're found out. The merc wasn't known for discretion, and if he started spreading word that you were doing work on the side and charging them for it outside your contract, you would lose your job. Finding an opportunity like this one where you had your own accommodations wasn't easy to come by. Reporting the request meant you getting pulled into a full discussion, and the merc could easily point fingers.
You moved quietly through the dark halls of the base, having a night shift. Work tasks were put in the mailbox of your office door during the day, and you returned to your room in the evening. Just in case, you had a small cot in your office space that you could sit on to be more comfortable, or to sleep on if you had more work to do in one shift. You could get up, make yourself food during the day. It was a good set up. As you went back and forth, you started to notice Konig more often. He started to give you acknowledgements if you ever passed him in the hall. Then Konig would ask how your sleep was, if you had a lot of work to do. Next thing you knew, Konig would come into the recroom while you were getting yourself some tea, asking if you wanted him to come back later. You were getting used to his presence, and even taking comfort in it.
During your breaks, if he was up late you started to approach him. He often looked tired when you saw him. Training was the only explanation you got. One night you decided to ask him more.
"What kind of training?" You asked, in a small voice.
"Work out." He answered. "What kind of training do you do?"
"Not much. Um... mostly typing exercises." You said, trying to hold your eye contact. Big deep breaths, this was going well. You were okay. This was a conversation, which wasn't easy for you.
"May I ask a question?" Konig requested. No, because the fact he asked if he could ask, meant the question might be personal or maybe awkward, or maybe it was something super intimate. With the warm mug of tea in your hands you took a deep breath before nodding. "What hybrid are you? Your eyes very big."
He didn't know? Really? Then again, you didn't interact with a lot of hyrbids yourself, so maybe it wasn't that weird of a question. Still, you kept tugging at your hood. You're not exactly attractive, and you used to be bullied a lot for it. Stuck with you throughout childhood to adulthood. "Um... tarsier."
"Interesting." Konig said. Something told you he didn;t know what a tarsier was, your tail and eyes could belong to another creature for all he knew. Instead of inquiring further, he stood up and said good night. You wished him a good sleep before heading back to your office. That interaction went better than you expected.
Horangi was waiting by Konig's room smiling at him. KOnig didn't pay him much mind until he said something. "You like em?"
"So far." Konig said, fiddling with the door knob.
"Good, you need more friends." Horangi commented before heading to his own room.
You tried to leave your office again, but the merc was coming down the hall so you ducked back in. He was knocking on your door asking to be let in. The morning was young, barely anyone else would be awake. He was keeping his voice firm, but low enough that no one would wake up. You kept the door locked, and put your headphones on. He can't come in, he won't break down the door, you're safe, safe in your office. The same things run through your head like a program, a firewall to keep you safe.
"I have other work." You finally told him, wanting the knocking and words to stop. You heard a bit more, before it finally stopped.
"I need it done today." He told you before walking away. You knew that already, but you were trying to avoid him, let the pieces fall where they may. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to fix his laptop, and just keep everything quiet. It wouldn't be the first time you did favours to avoid confrontation. If you did, he might get his buddies to ask you for free work. The laptop was sitting at your desk next to your monitors. You let out a breath, and then got to work on it, sitting down and opening it.
When he gave you the work order - if you could even call it that since it was written on a sticky note - he explained he had some important documents on there that had gotten hit by a virus after watching some adult content. Honestly how he was able to do that on a work computer with the restrictions you'd programmed in place you weren't sure... wait. If he could figure out how to access restricted sites then why couldn't he fix the issue himself?
You took some time poking around, knowing full well you were gooing into over time. You'd worry about that later, as you started to look around. First was a browser history check, not just the surface. You honestly didn't care what content it was, everyone had their preferences. You found nothing, completely nothing. You were able to uncover his incognito history, and it was blank, not even deleted. Next was his corrupted files. You noticed they'd been renamed, and access had been denied to them. They weren't corrupted though, they were locked. It was a failsafe you'd made yourself, that anyone accessing the files without the proper authority would have them appear as corrupted, but in reality they were just locked, and you cut the key yourself. If anyone stole the files, they would be able to access them, and if they tried to delete them from the system you could recover them.
You connected the laptop to your computer and started to chip away at the files. These were your files, or rather Kortac's files. Highly classified files. Files that shouldn't be leaving Kortac's system, and could compromise a lot of soldiers. You didn't bother reading any of them too closely, you weren't supposed to without being monitored. You wrapped everything up quickly, closing the windows, getting copies of the files on to a fresh new flash drive just in case, and then putting everything back to how it was on the laptop. Unfortunately, this had taken you some hours to do. The sun was up by now. People would be in the halls, and you had to get to your superiors quickly. You texted your superior that you needed to have a meeting with him, saying you'd found something important.
You gather some papers and notes to hide the laptop, and the flashdrive was shoved into your pocket. Once your hand was on the door knob you took a deep breath. Just look at the floor, keep walking, you know where their office is, you could do it. You got this.
You opened the door, and marched down the halls, your legs almost sprinting. You didn't want to run, you had to stay calm in situations like this. Keep walking, ignore everyone, shoot one of them waved at you. Okay just ignore her too, don't let her suspect anything. Keep your head down, keep going. Turn here, or wait...yeah no that was the right way. Almost ther- phone buzzed. Shoot, he's not in his office, you had to go to the briefing room. Damn it that was the other turn, okay, just a 180 and a walk. Your boss will take you aside before he tells the others.
Then you heard the merc calling after you. Your pace picked up as you tried to make yourself as small as possible. There were others in the hall, but they were focused on their own destinations. Focus on yours, maybe he'll leave you alone. Come on, come on, just breath. Why did everything seem so loud? Dang it you were getting stopped by people, nearly running into them. The merc was getting closer you could hear his footsteps. Almost there, keep going, come on, why were there so many people? You psuhed through, but got a little careless, stumbling. You ran into someone large, who only reminded you to watch where you were going. you fell to the floor and everything in your arms fell to the floor, the papers scattering and the laptop doing a bounce before sliding. The chatter of the hall was too loud, it was too full, it was suffocating, you swear you felt everyone was looking at you. Stop it needed to stop, it was too much. The merc was coming, you were screwed!
"Hey! Geht es dir gut?" You heard a familiar voice say, breaking through the noise, and your sleeve covered hands over your ears. When did you sit up? When did Konig get here? It didn't matter as he held your head, adding his own hands to muffle the noise. You were shaking, and your breathing was erratic. Too much it was too much. Konig got you to focus on his veil, his eyes specifically. You needed to focus, but the noise was too much. You kept trying to look to the side, check if the merc was still there, trying to find the laptop. Konig kept calling your attention back to him.
"You're safe." He told you. "Breath in, hold it... breath out, hold it."
You did as he instructed, recognizing the exercise. It was hard to be distracted by anything else around you when Konig's massive form was crouched in front of you. You did feel safe around him. He was a big shield against everything else. He breathed with you, needing to calm himself as well. The noise was pretty bad, and Horangi acting as an attack cat wasn't exactly calming. A welcome assistance but not a calming one.
You finally got your heart to stop beating so manically, and your breathing even. The light headed feeling had gone, but Konig didn't help you up yet, instead, he adjusted his position to sit with you more comfortably on the hard floor. After a little while longer you felt back to normal. As normal as you could be. People had left by now, and Horangi was standing nearby with the laptop and papers. The way he was looking up and down the halls, it was as if he were standing guard, ready to drive off anyone that posed a threat to break your calm state.
"Gut?" Konig asked you, as you slowly lowered your hands from your ears. You gave a nod. "Hand up?"
Another nod and Konig gave you a hand to stand. You clasped it with your smaller one. "Where are you headed?"
"Briefing." You breathed. Konig gestured for you to lead on. Horangi stood with the items, ready to go. You reached out for the items, and before you could request them, Horangi offered them to you.
"Salamat." You said. Horangi waited for you to start walking, his tail swishing expectantly. You started moving, your hunched posture and quick scurry resuming. The two men followed behind you, keeping an eye out. You didn't bother to ask where the merc was. You knocked on the door to the briefing room and your boss let you in.
"Sorry gentlemen, but this is a private meeting." Your boss told Konig and Horangi. You looked back at them. No, you needed someone else.
"Let them in." You asked. "Please?"
Your boss glanced at you, and you gave him a single nod. Then he turned and gave a nod to the two men before letting them in. Konig stood by you immediately while Horangi hung back watching everything unfold. You revealed the tampered documents and files to the others, exposing the merc's attempts to get you to give up information. You went as far as to hand over the flashdrive containing the files incase there needed to be a full sweep of every kortac member's computer or laptop to ensure no one could force themselves through.
The whole time, your breathing was uneven and you spoke quickly, sometimes needing to repeat yourself. During that whole time, Konig stuck close to you, leaning down to ask if you needed a moment. Then the merc was brought it. No cuffs or zip ties, just brought in and sat down in a chair, with all eyes on him. When he looked at you, seeing your big eyes under your hood, he flinched. Then again he might have been more nervous to see Konig, who was still leaning down and wearing his veil. With the illuminated screen behind you, casting both of you in shadow, it was certainly a creepy sight.
Horangi had to admit, the two of you made an intimidating pair in the right circumstance. He would tell Leo about it later. For now he got to sit back and relax, as the merc was questioned. Every answer left the merc with another bead of sweat dripping down, as you brought everything to light.
"I'm not proud of it, but I had a virus from watching adult content. It was stupid to do that on a work computer, it won't happen again." The merc said. Your boss looked at you, and gave you a nod.
"Then why did you download it instead of deleting the content?" You asked.
"I was hoping to get it fixed and view it but clearly that was a mistake. Like I said, I won't do it again. If the issue is fixed then-"
"There is no access to adult content through the laptop." You said.
"Well... yeah I deleted the browser history." He said shrugging. Gotcha. Even your boss had a smile, catching the lie. Perfect strike.
"I checked your browser history, even going further to recover the history previously deleted, and there is no access to adult sites. Also, there wouldn't be any to begin with, because like I said, there's no access to adult content on the laptops. There are site blockers built into the search browser, specifically designed to prevent something like a virus from a sketchy ad on one of those sites from spreading to the system. Even if you brought the content in from somewhere else and downloaded it, the files would not come up as corrupted."
"But if the files have a virus..." The merc said, clinging to the last straw he had. It wasn't even a straw, more like a wet straw wrapper.
"Then the system would have noticed it and prevented downloading or accessing it. The only time a file comes up corrupted is if it's protected by my program." You told him, not smugly but rather calm and informative. Your superiors stared down the merc, who was sweating through his shirt. You were dismissed with Konig and Horangi, so the merc could be dealt with. Good, you were hungry anyways. Could use some air too.
You were forced to work a little extra because of the rogue mercenary, going through laptops to ensure no one else had taken anything, or had something taken from them. Right now you were just glad to not have someone trying to hound you. You ventured out into the dark halls again to get yourself a snack and a drink.
When you got there you found Konig. You almost didn't recognize him because he had his hood off. It took you aback until you recognized his size. You greeted him, and got to chatting a little before the two fo you sat down. It had been a couple of days since the merc was exposed, and you'd been so caught up with work you hadn't gotten out as much as you should have.
"Thank you, by the way." You said, focusing on the table in front of you, instead of the large mercenary in front of you. "For in the hall. I... I think I would have passed out."
"Kein problem." Konig said. Then he waited a moment. "You have social anxiety too?"
"Y-yeah. I uh... I used to get picked on a lot for how I look, some times people uh... they would pull my tail...make fun of my ears or..." You gestured to your large eyes, that were bigger than any human eyes. The same eyes that seemed to avoid Konig throughout your explanation.
"People made fun of my height." Konig told you. "I was bullied a lot too."
The two of your sat there with your reasons hanging in the air. You didn't need to say much more about your past. That could come in time. You had to admit, you did like having Konig around for your conversations. It was helping you feel comfortable around people, and you hoped it did the same for Konig.
As time went on, you spent more and more time with him, and eventually other members of Kortac. It was thanks to you none of them ended up on a hit list and their lives weren't revealed to the wrong people. Eventually Konig had to leave with Horangi to a SpecGru base. By that point though you had other's that you were getting comfortable around, and still had plenty of work to do trhoughout the night. Konig said his good byes to you. Wishing you and Leo well before boarding the air craft.
The first night you got to talk to Konig over a video call, you took your mask off. Progress, you thought.

...! bandaids and piggyback rides
►pairing :: yukimiya kenyu x short! reader (fem implied)
► synopsis: yukimiya kindly offers you a piggyback ride
► wc :: 907
► other :: we love gentlemen yukki!
slightly proof read
a/n :: im terrible at coming up with synopsis and titles </3
────────
the two of you pant, having to place your hands on your knees to catch your breath. the bus became smaller and smaller as it continued its route throughout the city.
you and yukimiya let out a long, heavy sigh.
“well, unfortunately for us, that was the bus” yukimiya exhaled, letting his shoulders fall. he thinks he hasn’t ran that fast since the U-20 match. even he’s surprised you managed to keep up with him all the way to the bus stop.
kicking off your non-broken in doc martens in annoynace. definitely not the smartest shoe choice for a long day of walking. 12,542 steps was the last number you remember checking the pedometer on your phone. and that was well over two hours ago. who knows how much pain you’ve put your poor feet to. “my feet are killing me!” you complained about throwing the pair of shoes towards the innocent bush. “yikes i think i have a blister or two.” you tenderly rub over your heel, “maybe even three.”
“hey! the bush has feelings too you know.” yukimiya mutters as he gathers your shoes, not before giving a small apology to the greenery. you let a small chuckle out from his actions.
you examined your skirt quickly, noticing how your fly had gone down. “oh let me fix my zipper real quick.” you tugged on the zipper as it wouldn’t budge. putting in too much force, it snapped in half. “great! i just needed another wardrobe malfunction to complete this day.” you complained folding over in despair.
“hey! you’re wearing a skirt don’t bend down like that.” he scolds, ushering over to cover you. “wait, don’t move.” yukimiya shakes off his denim jacket as he gently wraps the jacket around waist, making sure he doesn't make any touchy approaches. yukki would never want to make you uncomfortable after all.
your breath hitched as he came closer to your body. one inch closer and your face would’ve been buried into his neck. “i should just piggy back you home,” he suggests.
you give him a slight smile in compliance.
yukimiya bends down to your height as you climb onto his back. you let out a slight yelp when he eases you up to full height. in a panic, you wrap your arms around yukki’s neck to balance yourself. he sure hopes you don’t catch the faint pink of his ears.
“wow, so this is what the world looks like at 6 feet,” he chuckles at your response. absentmindedly, you rest your head against yukimiya’s shoulder, glancing up at the night sky. the inviting breeze blows against your face, eliciting a soft sigh.
yukimiya comes to a halt. “why are we stopping?” carefully, he eases you onto the bench in front of the family mart. “stay here, i have to buy something real quick.” you nod in response as yukimiya disappears into the convenience store.
minutes felt like hours as you attempted to turn on your phone before the dead battery sign showed up taunting you. you grumble at your phone and place it back down on the bench. trying to preoccupy yourself, your eyes wander to the trinket shop across the street. you giggle to yourself as your eyes land on a tarsier keychain near the storefront window. ‘he really does look like one.”
the bell rings and you whip your head to be met with yukimiya holding a box of bandaids and two ice cream bars. he unwraps the strawberry popsicle before handing it to you. you blush at the gesture, thinking how he made the effort to remember your favorite flavor.
“thanks yukki! you’re the best,” you exclaim. “you even got my favorite too!”
“yeah yeah, now let me see your feet,” carefully, yukimiya examines the damage before gently placing a blue band aid on both of your heels.
“soccer bandaids really?” you bite your lip stifling a laugh. “how ironic.”
he throws you a slight glare. “these were the only bandaids they had left, i swear.” rubbing his neck in embarrassment.
“i’m joking!” you lightly shove his shoulder. “besides, i’ll just think of you whenever i see them."
now, it was yukimiya’s turn to blush at your remark. he turned away trying to compose himself by adjusting his glasses and clearing his throat.
“have you ever had a list of backup plans if this whole soccer thing doesn’t work out? maybe you can become a doctor as a backup!” you joke.
he ruffles the top of your head in slight annoyance and half playfully. “nope, not a chance!”
“okay, hop back on let’s get you home,” you grumble before complying.
the warmth emitting from yukimiya was enough to lull you to sleep. the added cool breeze was a nice bonus. you sigh contently falling asleep on his back of all places.
yukimiya is glad that he's an athlete. if he wasn't, he thinks he would be as good as gone. who else would have the stamina and strength to walk well over 20 minutes? with a person on their back for that matter.
“okay, here’s your stop, miss!” yukimiya is met with silence. “y/n?” all yukimiya could hear was the soft snores coming from your mouth. he sighs before raising his hand to adjust the hair falling in front of your face, a fond smiling growing as he watches your peaceful, dream-like expression.
“what am i going to do with you?”

@crystaltoa Okay but this is even funnier than you're implying. Things to know: there are several species concepts (i.e. ways to define a species), the morphological species concept is just one of them. This person is arguing that species are just made up, so it doesn't matter if they define a species in a different manner than typically done, thus defaulting to the morphological species concept which is a real thing. The morphological species concept is just so old and outdated as to be unusable by scientists, unless they have no other option (looking at you, hominin fossil record). It's like, saying, "well, Koch's postulates (of germ theory of disease fame) isn't always useful anymore. However, the miasma theory-" It's crazy! I hate it!
Morphological species concept also leads to some of the whackiest species classifications!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the guy on the left is a galago, a small lil cutie pie who is a primate. Middle guy? Chucky D. (Charles Darwin), a large primate. On the right? A tarsier, another small primate.
The commonly held assumption about these guys relatedness used to be that the galago and tarsier were pretty closely related, based on that morphological species concept. I mean, I can see it. Small, kinda mousey, big eyes, big ears? And that, duh, they don't look ape-ish at all! Gotta be pretty distant, huh?
Here's the thing, dear reader. WE ARE MORE CLOSELY RELATED TO THE TARSIER THAN IT IS TO THE GALAGO. The last common ancestor of the human lineage and the tarsier lineage is much more recent than that of the last common ancestor of the tarsier and galago, even though they look so similar!
Tumblr media
There's hundreds more of these cases, I'm just a primate scientist, so that's what I reached for!
TLDR: The morphological species concept is one of several species concepts, but it's so basic as to be unusable, and that is the hill I will die on.

Crowley: Good iguana Malleus has been found so now Crocodile Sebek you can stop staring at me as if you were about to eat me.
Mc: Let me guess Lilia made the soup again and now all the students have been turned into animals.
Crowley: Nope.
Mc: This is not Lilia's fault?
Crowley: Oh yes this is definitely Lilia's fault but this time he didn't make soup... he made juice.
Mc: And let me guess I have to take care of them until they return to normal.
Crowley: You're right Mc. And because I’m so “helpful” I’ll tell you who the animal each person is.
Mc: Isn’t that the basic information you give me anyway?
Crowley: *just Ignore Mc's question* You already met Malleus and Sebek... That bat is Lilia and the sloth that has stuck to your leg is Silver.
Riddle: *screaming*
Mc: What was that?
Crowley: That really loud and judgmental Flamingo is Riddle.
(If you dear reader don't know what sound flamingo make you can listen it to here )
Crowley: Those two hedgehogs are Trey and Cater and those two bunnies running around are Ace and Deuce.
Mc: Why is Flamingo Riddle pecking at me?
Crowley: Because you have a hat inside. Flamingo Riddle does not like breaking the rules.
Mc: *takes hat off*
Crowley: There are also more birds here. Vil is a peacock, Rook is a hawk, Neige is a swan and Epel is a very angry hummingbird. Jack is a wolf, Ruggie is a hyena and Leona * tries to stop laughing *

Just stuff I thought about
Also funny thought, Filipino reader calling "Roach" Ipis
HELLOOOO I SAW THIS SO LATE IM SO SORRY 😭 College has been kicking my ass
ALSO YES WAIY I LOVE the callsigns for their team.
Manok is called Manok cos the team always bets on them to finish the job. Manok is lowkey the teams luck charm
Tarsier would be nice-- they could be the team's sniper with how often they hide up and spot things with their good eyes. And Kidlat is always the stealth person with how fast they move. Its like, you see them at point A, blink, and suddenly they're all the way at Point B
BUT THATS SO CUTE, Aswang calling Roach Ipis. They're just messing around with Roach and call him that when they're being playful and cute

TARSIERS!!! That's EXACTLY what I was picturing in my mind last chapter but I couldn't remember what they were called despite doing a lil search!! You solved the mystery for me, and I can't believe I thought of the same thing?! LOOK AT THEM EYEBALLS, yes the "permanently surprised old man gremlin of the primate world" bahahaha! 😆
Thank you for another lovely scene of listening to the mundane domestic sounds Din makes, the way everything is such a comfort for her now, her ponderings and thoughts...I love it as always.
Then you had to write all that Grogu tickling which is SO DARN CUTE.
And THENNN you had to go make the little Tarsier-looking creature seek out help for its friend's injured paw? That it was brave enough to come to a vessel with similar visual properties as the shard that injured its friend? It's so innocent and sweet and is just seeking halp? What this says about reader? *cries in animal lover* I love that she calls the initial creature her "friend," because SAME. And making that shard the key to the uneasy realization that there might be others around was a brilliant plot point.
A few other passages I loved:
"Din. Soft and hard, a sharp consonant and a gentle exhale, a pleasing hum. Contrasts. Layers. It suits him." Oooh, what a lovely little meditation on his name!
"Sleep is a trifling temptation when Din is around." TRIFLING TEMPTATION. My fave phrase of the day!!
Also, I'm pretty sure I first learned about Tarsiers from Ze Frank's classic True Facts vid 😆.
The Third Step - Chapter-Twenty-Four
Part of The World Is Light, Embodied.
Pairing: Din Djarin x F!Reader
Rating: Explicit (not this chapter but the series as a whole)
Word Count: 2600
Warnings, etc.: fluff, introspection, mentions of strict religious code, ridiculously adorable domesticity, like so so sugary sweet, my teeth hurt, anxiety, injured animal (but it’s okay in the end)
Notes:. okay this one is shorter than usual but it’s a natural conclusion to the Third Step so I’m going to cut it here. I’ll try to give y’all a bit extra in the next one. Also, I’ve modelled the tree-dwelling creatures after the tarsier, who has a special place in my heart as the permanently surprised old man gremlin of the primate world.
Mando’a translations at the end of the chapter.

A swirl of cool air pulls you from sleep with a shiver over the skin of your naked back.
What -
Your eyes fly open, panic already clawing up your throat at the sensation of blankets on your bare skin - why are you fully naked, where is your shirt -
A warm hand brushes your arm, pulls the blankets back up over your shoulder, rests there with a steady weight. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”
Breath you didn’t realize you were holding releases in a rush, thoughts finally shaking off the last dregs of sleep.
You slip your fingers through his and turn your face to kiss his palm. “Oh good. It’s only you.”
“Yes, only me.” His voice floats over you in the dark, light with humour.
Rolling your eyes at his unseen form, you turn over, squirm under the blankets to close the distance between you.
He’s sitting up - must be close to day cycle, he’s getting out of bed to get dressed - so you curl an arm around his thigh and settle your cheek against it. “Obviously I don’t mean only you, I just mean only you.”
He hums in amusement, hand drifting down your back over the blankets. “Makes sense.”
You pinch the inside of his thigh, pretending to ignore his muffled sound of protest. “It’s too early for banter. Come back in an hour after I have time to wake up.”
“Go back to sleep, tionas.” His voice quivers with suppressed laughter as he bends to press a kiss to your temple.
You tilt your lips to meet his, catching his smile with one of your own. A soft kiss, the sweep of his thumb over your cheek and then he’s pulling away, easing you back down to the floor and standing up.
The blankets are warm, full of his scent, and you burrow into them, tuck the edge over your nose as you listen to him move about the hold. Soft rustles of fabric and muffled clinks of armour being jostled in his arms, then his footsteps are moving away, heading toward the ‘fresher. The woosh of the door opening, and again closing, and then you’re alone, nestled in a corner of the world that’s become a safe-haven, a sanctuary. A place of comfort and trust.
For both you and him.
That warm bright thing in your chest flares.
For both you and Din.
Din.
Soft and hard, a sharp consonant and a gentle exhale, a pleasing hum.
Contrasts. Layers.
It suits him.
You shift onto your back, staring up at the dark ceiling. The day cycle is starting, you can already make out the various storage bags hanging there, the row of cables running the length of the ship.
Names weren’t important to you. A name for you is insignificant, something that can be changed or hidden or falsified. You shed names and grow new ones at will.
But for him…
That’s how we ensure the Creed stays true. By erasing who we are. Making us only Mandalorian.
His words from last night drift through your thoughts.
It makes sense that his people are so strict on personal identity. They’re facing extinction, struggling to hold on to the last vestiges of a long-standing, noble culture. It’s in their best interest to eliminate outside influences if they want to preserve their heritage.
So you know how much his admission means.
I survived before I met you. Now, I live. Din lives.
Your heart thuds loud in your chest, a mix of emotion turning your stomach.
His name means something. It’s an identity, a part of himself he thought long gone. Someone buried under years of devoting his life to others.
A person hidden, tucked away behind layers of armour, beskar and cloth, silence and solitude.
Everyone’s got their own armour, of sorts.
Kriff, so much has changed since you first said that to him, back when you were fleeing Bakura. You’d said it by way of apology for teasing him about not removing his helmet, a recognition that you would respect his creed and a reinforcement that you had secrets of your own.
Because you did. You had secrets, and armour that you’d strapped on tight to protect them.
You still do. But you had peeled back your armour, piece by piece, and let him see those secret parts of you.
Just as he has done for you.
Pfassk. Things have gotten real deep, haven’t they?
You snort in amusement at your own inner ramblings.
They sure have. And you should be terrified, but that warm bright thing in your chest is grounding, a wall that stops any sharp spikes of anxiety from digging in and making you question why you’ve let someone so close.
Because there’s no sense in wasting time thinking about the why, when you already know the answer.
The ‘fresher door slides open, and you hear bootsteps head toward the ladder.
Smiling, you sit up, stretch out your back, take a deep breath and release. Stand and find your clothes scattered around the blankets, pull them on quickly and efficiently.
Sleep is a trifling temptation when Din is around.
*****
“Ok, ready for the next?” You prop the datapad up on your bent knee, displaying the letter as the kid watches closely. “This one is grek. It makes a ‘geh’ sound.”
His wide, amber gaze takes in the shape on the screen, ears perking with interest. It’s hard to tell how much he’s understanding, but you’re going to try going through the alphabet a few more times and then start with some simple words. That should give you an idea of how much he’s getting out of these lessons.
You shift a little to ease the ache in your knees - sitting on the floor of the hull isn’t exactly great for your joints but it’s become the place where you have these lessons and you don’t want to change the routine now. Pressing the button on the datapad to move to the next letter, you grin when it flashes on the screen.
“This one is my favourite, remember?”
The kid chirps excitedly, hands already reaching for you.
“This one makes a ‘heh’ sound. What’s it’s called?” Scooping him up, you dump him in your lap and tickle your fingers along his sides. “Herf! Herf! Herf!”
He cackles and squirms, tiny clawed hands pretending to bat yours away, and you renew your assault, finding his most ticklish spot right under his arms and skittering your fingertips over it relentlessly.
A soft, modulated huff of laughter drifts over the kid’s giggles.
Din leans forward from his seat on a crate to pick up the datapad, which had fallen off your knee. “There’s a reason why it takes so long to get through the entire alphabet.”
“Incorrect, there’s three reasons.” You pause your attack, letting the kid take a breath. “Remember what they are, kiddo?” He coos happily, bright eyes shining. “That’s right. Herf, mern and nern. Mern nern mern nern -“
He screeches with laughter as your fingers resume their attack, his giggles weaving through your own and the quiet huff of Din’s, filling the hold with a light that rivals the sunshine pouring in through the open crew door.
Another sound pricks your ears and you let the kid settle, turning your gaze to the direction of the sound. Din hears it, too, black visor trained on the door, gloved hand resting over his blaster.
A tiny scritching, like claws on metal -
Your heartbeat stutters as a small, furry head pops around the top of the door, bright blue gaze finding yours almost instantly.
Nobody moves. The creature stares at you, upside down eyes unblinking. It’s a little unsettling, being pinned under that gaze, but your instincts tell you the creature isn’t going to attack. It’s just curious, in some way.
Throwing Din a reassuring glance, you shift the kid in your lap, holding him firmly, ready to run and get him to safety in case your instincts are wrong.
You clear your throat, looking up at the creature. “Hello.”
It twitches, head tilting one way then the other. The kid coos softly, and that bright blue gaze shifts to him, sharp.
Your hands tighten just a bit around the kid. “He’s with us. We can be friends, but you can’t hurt him, ok?”
Din moves slightly, fingers curling around the grip of his blaster.
The creature suddenly darts out of sight, only to peer back around the doorframe again a second later. It stares at you for a moment, then skitters down the frame onto the ramp, grey and silver fur sparking in the sunlight, long tail flicking as it crouches in the doorway.
There’s something about it that’s nagging at you, something about it’s posture. It’s acting defensive, not aggressive, but why would it approach the ship if it’s afraid? Tree-dwellers like this animal usually just keep to the trees where they feel safe, rarely do they approach any perceived threat.
True, it’s obviously not used to people, doesn’t quite understand them enough to realized how much of a threat they are. But that’s not enough to pull it from its home.
Unless it’s looking for something.
The creature flicks it’s tail again, this time you notice it’s purposefully pointing it, drawing the tip into a sharp angle. Pointed right at you.
Slowly, you lift the kid, pass him to Din, and stand, facing the creature. “What do you need?”
The helmet tilts out of the corner of your eye, looking at you, questioning. But you can’t risk taking your gaze off the creature, you’ll have to trust that Din will trust you.
The creature shifts to its hind legs, sitting up. Ok, that’s more friendly than aggressive behaviour. That’s a good sign.
Taking a deep breath, you cautiously step toward it, watching for any sign of it changing it’s mind. Another step, and another, then the creature turns and scurries down the ramp, stopping at the bottom to look back at you.
You pause in the doorway, meeting the bright blue gaze.
Well. Got this far. Might as well see what it wants.
It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust to the bright sunshine, then you move slowly down the ramp, the creature keeping its distance with quick, twitchy steps but always looking back at make sure you’re following. It takes you to the edge of the clearing, then stops, chirping loudly.
A rustle in the leaves above your head draws your attention and suddenly there’s another pair of bright blue eyes staring down at you.
Then another. And another.
You take a step back, pulse quickening, muscles flexing, ready to run.
The trees are full of these grey-furred creatures, dozens of pairs of blue eyes looking down at you.
Ok. This might have been a mistake.
Then the one who had lead you here - maybe it’s the same one that you met yesterday? Hard to tell, they all look the same - scurries up the trunk of the nearest tree, grabbing hold of another one of the creatures and hauling it onto its back before running back down the tree.
What in the crikking hells is it doing?
There’s a furry shuffle of movement and the second creature is suddenly in front of you, only a couple paces away.
It looks up at you with that same unsettling blue gaze.
You clear your throat, looking down at it while still making sure to keep the others in your peripheral. “Uh, hi. How are you?”
Silence. The only thing that moves is the trees, swaying gently with the warm breeze.
“Ok. Not sure what I’m doing here.”
It doesn’t do anything, just sits there. Staring at you.
Your thoughts sift through the situation, try to figure out what is going on, what this creature needs -
Oh.
It’s holding one paw in the other, tiny little fingers wrapped around it’s wrist.
Sunlight glints off a shard of silver piercing through the paw.
Your stomach twists with sympathy, and you slowly drop to your knees, lifting your hand out. “Poor thing. Can I see it?”
The creature stares at your hand, stock still. Then the other one - your friend - makes a quiet sound, almost like a growl but much softer, and it moves forward, shuffling awkwardly on its hind legs until it’s right in front of you.
Holding your breath, you keep your hand steady as it gently lays its injured paw in your palm.
The shard isn’t long, and luckily not very big. The wound looks fresh, luckily. Probably won’t cause too much damage, especially not for a tree-dweller like this little one, whose paws are made to heal fast.
You let your breath out slowly, and curl your fingers around the tiny wrist, careful not to apply too much pressure and spook it.
Lifting your other hand, you grasp the end of the shard, pausing until those bright blue eyes flick up to meet your gaze. “I’m sorry, this is probably going to hurt.”
With a sharp tug, you yank the shard free.
Chaos ensues.
The creature chirps loudly and scurries away, tearing up the nearest tree trunk. Your friend follows, and the trees above shake with the movement of dozens of others fleeing as fast as they can deeper into the forest. A few leaves break free, drift down to the ground, and then you’re left standing alone, examining the metal shard curiously.
A rustle of movement and a gentle babble at your side - Din and the kid. Must have kept back while the impromptu operation was taking place.
You turn, hold out the shard, careful to keep it out of the kid’s reach. “Know what this is? Little dude had it stuck in its paw.”
“Does that happen often?”
“What?” Looking up from the shard, you meet the black visor’s gaze.
“Animals coming to you for medical assistance.”
Laughter bubbles up in your chest. “Not really. Though I once had a pregnant loth-cat give birth under my cabin. Took me days to get her used to me so I could move her and the kittens inside - it was just before winter, they wouldn’t have made it.” You sigh dramatically. “Of course, then I was stuck living with seven loth-cats for another year, before I found them all homes and moved on. Let me tell you, not a single scrap of fabric survived in that house unscathed.”
The helmet tilts, flashing in the sunlight. “Some people would have left the loth-cats. Treated those tree-dwellers as pests and scared them away.”
“Well, some people are assholes.” You lightly tap your fingertip on the kid’s snub nose. “That’s a bad word, buddy, forget that one, ok?”
He coos back at you while Din takes the shard from your fingers, holding it up. “Looks like durasteel. Freshly broken, edges are still sharp and unweathered.”
Something cold tightens your chest. “Durasteel? On an uninhabited planet?”
“Doesn’t mean others haven’t stopped here. Like us.”
You glance up at the sky, chill spreading down your back. “Also doesn’t mean others aren’t still here.”
He slips the shard into a pouch on his belt. “Should probably leave before we find out if that’s true.”
“Yeah.” Looking back at the forest, you take in the sight of the slender white-trunked trees and delicate blue leaves fluttering in the breeze.
Beautiful. Maybe you’ll be back, someday.
Funny, the thought of returning to somewhere you’d already been didn’t scare you like it once did.
Turning back to Din and the kid, you smile, chill fading at the sight of the two of them, brightly lit by the warm sunshine. “Let’s hit the black.”

Apology and Confession
Several readers have brought certain private matters to my attention and have threatened to go public, so I would like to get ahead of the news and offer both my most sincere apologies for deceiving you all and make an honest confession. I will be leaving all my posts up for a further forty-eight hours after this notice before removing them.
For years, I have claimed to be a koala. However, astute readers have noted that I was not born in Australia. Instead, I immigrated to Australia as a young child. It is therefore impossible for me to be a koala.
I would thus like to apologise for claiming to be a koala when I am not, in fact, a koala. It was never my intent to harm any actual koalas. However, I have a deep and abiding love for my adopted home, and I wanted nothing more than to be a real koala.
Reality can be cruel. I am not a koala. I am actually a tarsier.
My most sincere apologies to anyone I have hurt.
P. S. Check the date.

It's More Fun In The Philippines
Where do you want to spend your vacation? Or what are the wonderful places to visit? During a holiday or end of the school year, do you usually get asked by one of these questions? Maybe, some would answer Bali, Japan, South Korea, Europe, but only a few will say Philippines. Many of us dreamt about going outside the country, yet have we asked ourselves first if we already saw those beautiful and surreal places in our country?
The Philippines is a nation situated in Asian landmass in the western Pacific. It is a free republic that involves over 7, 000 islands. Throughout the long term, the nation has stayed a protected and appealing vacationer location. The nation has been getting various guests both from the inside and global travelers. The Philippines has a dominant part of vacation spots going from characteristic marvels, amusement, authentic milestones, expressions, diversion, culture, and conventions just to make reference to a couple.
The Philippines is likewise home to widely acclaimed regular miracles like an underground stream and rice porches, amazing jumping spots wealthy in biodiversity, vivid public transportation, exceptional cooking from appetizing to sweet, energetic celebrations that exhibit its beautiful culture, and neighborly local people viewed as probably the most joyful on the planet. You see, we define our country as a beautiful place filled with smiling people. Before we get down to the top places in the country, I shall give you a few reasons why I recommend Philippines as your vacation destination.
First, Philippines is a tropical country, which means we only have two seasons: dry and rainy season. So if you want some “sunkissed” photos in a beach, our country is the best place for you visit especially if you love beaches. The dry season covers November to May while the stormy season is normally from June until October. During the stormy months, it's as yet radiant and warm so visits in the Philippines are as yet progressing and are just vital when there's a hurricane.
Second,if you only have low budget then, worry no more. There are destinations that are budget friendly. Travel expenses in Philippines are affordable such as day tours that only cost PHP1000 or 20 in US dollars. You will find that there's a great deal of convenience alternatives for you in the Philippines also: from lodgings to modest overnight boardinghouse, convenience that are both ideal for explorers. Food in the Philippines is modest as well. For generally around PHP100-150(USD2-3), you will get yourself a respectable breakfast place that offers exemplary Filipino food with espresso. The equivalent goes for your lunch and dinner.
Third, Filipinos are friendly and very accommodating. Aside from the picture worthy destination, you have us, our hospitality and warmth is one of the reason to visit Philippines. The moment your plane lands here, you are greeted by the genuine and bright smile of the my fellow Pinoys. Also we love and we’re proud of of the beauty of our culture. If you worry about how you can communicate with us, I must tell you that communication is never a problem for tourist like you.Filipinos are bilingual, some are even multilingual. We understand and speak English making it convenient for foreign visitors to come here. You don’t have to worry about getting lost here because you can ask questions on your way, Filipinos are always ready to guide you. Filipinos are entirely accommodating as well. They have solid family ties as a feature of their way of life. On the off chance that you have Filipino companions who welcome you to their home, they will deal with you like you're an aspect of their family and may even serve you a gala of home-prepared Filipino food. The people alone will make you feel that Philippines is your home.
Fourth, we have a unique transportation. When you get here, maybe you’ll wonder and ask, what are these colorful vehicles an how do Filipinos call it? Those are jeepneys which is the main public transportation of our country. Travelers especially foreign one says that it is a must do to ride a jeepney. The fare is also cheap. By riding this vehicle we can see the helpful trait of Filipinos because we help pass the payment one person to another to the driver. Another interesting mode of transportation is the Philippines’ version of a rickshaw, also known as the tricycle or trike. This is almost comparable to Thailand’s tuktuk, only it is a motorbike with a sidecar attached to it.
Fifth, as perhaps the most joyful individual on the planet, Filipinos realize how to toss the best gatherings, be it in the city or in the unblemished white sand sea shores and islands. It's modest and is viewed by unfamiliar explorers as truly outstanding on the planet. Another acclaimed party movement in the Philippines is karaoke where you belt out your main tunes whether in the city or in a private room.
Sixth and maybe the last reason, the tourist spots in the Philippines. We are not just visiting the country because of the party, the vehicle and all of the reasonon mentioned above. In this section, we take a glimpse of the paradise like destinations. Many spots stand out from other destinations in our country. Here we come
1. Siargao made its first claim to fame as the Philippines’ surfing capital, and recently as the “Best Island in the World” (awarded by Condé Nast readers for 2018). The charming tidal ponds of Sohoton Cove, a characteristic marvel that is definitely justified even despite the 2-hour diversion from the Cloud 9 riding sea shore. The primary island is loaded up with unblemished normal spots also, including white sand sea shores, dazzling islets, huge coconut woods, cool lagoons and more.
In the event that you need to appreciate a laidback island way of life, Siargao is perhaps the best spot that sightseers can go to. You'll discover a blend of "unfamiliar" and "nearby" here. It is far off yet open, and not very swarmed regardless of the happening to new improvements lately. Located along the eastern coast of the Philippines (facing the Pacific Ocean), Siargao is best reached by air. Fly direct to Sayak Airport (IAO) in Siargao Island from Manila, Cebu, or Clark. Flight duration is 2 hours from Manila or 1 hour from Cebu. From the airport, the land trip to Cloud 9 beach, the main tourist area, takes around 45 minutes. You can also reach Siargao by taking a flight to Surigao Airport (SUG), found in mainland Mindanao. Then, hop on a 1.5-hour fastcraft ferry to Dapa Port in Siargao Island.
2. Boracay is a vacationer’s paradise. When talking about beaches and white sand, boracay is well known. Taking center stage is 4-kilometer White Beach, prized for its incredibly inviting blue waters, fine white sand, and perfect sunsets. This island is the place to go if you want to take it easy and you’re looking forward to enjoying a tropical resort experience. As you can expect, Boracay caters to a more upscale crowd, but don’t fret, there are many budget-friendly options available. 3. Batanes is the northernmost province of the Philippines. These remote islands are shaped by volcanic forces and strong typhoons. The natural landscape of Batanes is distinct from other parts of the Philippines. Here, you’ll find vibrant green rolling hills, grazing cows, steep seaside cliffs, sparkling clear blue waters, traditional stone houses, and iconic lighthouses. Batanes is home to the Ivatans who are much admired as the “True Insulares”. Ivatan Tribe is the first settler in this province. They came from Formosa which is known as Taiwan today. They have kept the purity of their culture and traditions through the years.
4. The Chocolate Hills of Bohol are one of the most iconic locations and natural phenomenons in the Philippines. The geological formation of the chocolate hills will leave you in awe, even more so at sunrise or sunset! With over 1,260 hills rolling into the horizon, they are covered with lush greens except during the dry season where the grass turns brown and gives the hills their name. This has to be one of the most unique landscapes in the Philippines and maybe even the world! There are many things to do there, trekking, searching for the tarsier, and visiting the hinagdanan caves.
Those are only four out of many tourist spots in the Philippines. By coming here in the Philippines, you could discover and visit more destinations, experience the hospitality of the Filipino. These places can be special because it will surely give you wonderful experience and your stay in every island is memorable for sure. What are those places that makes you come back over and over again? For those who haven’t gone here, would you even miss the chance to see the beauty of our country? Modojo Rewind: iOS Oh Yes
Hark, ye merry gentleman and fine lady folk, for a symphony of horns and bells signal the return of the Modojo Rewind. This week we doubled down on our efforts toward answering some pressing questions for iPhone and iOS users, and Nintendo came blasting out of the gates with loads of fresh news for Switch fans, including a short-lived but nonetheless exciting reveal for a new Super Smash Bros. title.
Free your mind and open your soul to the bewildering colors and perplexing synesthesia offered up by this week's Modojo Rewind.
The iPhone How-To Guide Hub Experience
In an effort to provide informative guides written specifically for mobile gamers, the Modojo @ Shacknews crew has spent plenty of time poring over some of the most frequently asked questions with regard to Apple hardware. This is serious business, folks, so instead of providing readers with the usual sort of medieval-themed and musically inspired flavor text, we're going to give you a straightforward list of all the new iPhone, iOS, and macOS-themed guides to hit Shack this week.
• How to move app icons on iPhone • How to set up and use Apple pay on the iPhone X and Apple Watch • How to send fireworks screen effects in iPhone messages • How to put the iPhone into Recovery Mode • How to turn off the iPhone Auto Join WiFi option • How to type to Siri on iOS and macOS
While we feel pretty strongly that these guides should cover some of the more common questions and complaints regarding Apple devices, we're certainly open to providing more how-to guides, so if you've got any ideas on what to cover next, let us know in the Chatty.
An Evolving Mobile Landscape
Though many mobile users might not realize, the day-to-day mobile market is in constant flux. Even big-name app developers with hugely popular software aren't immune from the effects of changing user expectations, and this week serves as evidence. We got wind that social media platform and camera company Snap Inc. is reportedly laying off nearly 100 employees, likely as an effort to revamp the brand, and popular game publisher Gameloft closed the doors on its Madrid studio, marking the seventh such closure over the past three years.
We do have some actual good news for mobile fans, of course: battle royale fans will either be thrilled or bummed to hear about Fortnite Battle Royale coming to iOS. While a mobile port is all well and good on its own, this new game will supposedly allow iOS users to play directly against PC and console players, which is unusual to say the least. Those who like their mobile games on the less thrilling (and less frustrating) side should also look forward to the upcoming release of Polar Rollout, a physics-based puzzler that's set to land on iOS later this year.
Direct From Nintendo
It just wouldn't be a Modojo Rewind without some news from Nintendo, and fortunately for fans, the company held a Nintendo Direct presentation this week full of loads of new information and release date reveals. While the news regarding both Mario Tennis Aces and Tarsier Studio's horror puzzler Little Nightmares were of particular interest, fans can check out a comprehensive list of all the reveals by heading over to our Nintendo Direct March 8 recap.
youtube
Aside from new games, we also re-learned some information about Nintendo's most iconic mascot this week, namely that Mario is formally and once again a plumber. He was already a plumber in our hearts, of course, but this news at least reassures those who fear Mario outgrowing his own roots. Beyond this, we've also heard about some new Mario crossover content coming to Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, which is sure to delight Nintendo fans getting their fill of the mobile scene. Last but certainly not least, Modojo's resident legend Brittany Vincent has had a chance to sit down with the new Sims mobile title, and series fans owe it to themselves to check out her official review of The Sims Mobile.

Gameplay: Statik #2 – Fiendish Puzzles And Robot Rhumbas
Readers of VRFocus will have likely seen recent reviews for both GNOG and Statik by VRFocus writer Rebecca Hills-Duty on the site. We’ll be covering both games this weekend starting with the latter, and you might have seen Rebecca take on the puzzler from Tarsier Studios for PlayStation VR earlier in the week. But the devious puzzle boxes do not stop there and Rebecca is back to once more have her hands encased in scientific gizmos for the voyeuristic delight of the scientist Dr Ingen.
That description is oddly approrpiate on this occasion since in this part Ingen is quick to introduce his “most wonderful invention to date” called The Voyeur, which is essentially a camera strapped to the top of a roomba. Whilst that doesn’t sound to impressive you’ll see Rebecca soon finds controlling the little remote control robot is vital for her completing her task – as well as starts off some pretty funky music. A roomba robot rhumba, perhaps?
Which PlayStation VR games would you like to see the team take on? Let us know in the comments. VRFocus will be back tomorrow with another gameplay video.

O’REILLY BOOK COVERS
O’Reilly book started as mail order books on UNIX topics by mail order, known as “Nutshell Handbooks” the short books with plain, brown covers were held together with staples. In the 1980s Tim O’Reilly wanted to transition to standard bookshop and hired a designer to create new covers.
Quite a dry topic, difficult to visualise or make aesthetically appealing
Resolved by line drawings (some with colours) of animals
Back of books and web info on books has a bit of info about the animals
Started by Edie Freedman in late 1980s
Claims there is always a reason for his animal choices, although sometimes even the authors upset with choices, finds links between specific animals and specific technoogies
When originally approached by O’Reilly, was “immersed in the VAX/VMS world of Digital Equipment Corporation” didn’t know much about UNIX so a lot of the command line tools like vi, awks, sed, uucp, yacc etc sounded very odd. Looking for imagery for covers he found 19th century wood engravings, strange animals seemed to match strange UNIX-terms and “were esoteric enough to appeal to what I believed the UNIX programmer type to be”
Met with initial reluctance when first presented, O’Reilly staff thought "But they're so ugly!" and
"No one will want to pick these up!"
However the quirkiness appealed to Tim O’Reilly and he thought it would make them stand out has become somewhat of a brand for O’Reilly now and is quite widely recognised, all over the world
Learned lots about animals during (ongoing) process.
One author really wanted a Boil Weevil on his book, sent over a lot of info and explanation as to why it fitted the topic, ended up being used for the cover (see “Oracle Web Applications.”)
Use animals from all classes: mammals, insects, birds etc but have found that people respond positively to animals depicted with recognisable faces, which directly engage the viewer.
Due to limited information about the engravings, sometimes are errors, readers often pick them up and correct eg. Caption of an engraving was misread and colophon editor was told that a monkey was a chimpanzee, lots of mail came in telling that chimpanzees do not have tails! (see “Expect”)
Also sometimes phobias about certain animals especially spiders, snakes and cats Webmaster in a Nutshell
Finally, an environmental/ awareness aspect, many cover animals originally abundant, and now are endangered, the tarsier from Learning the vi Editor, the lorises from sed & awk, the Victoria Crowned Pigeons from lex & yacc, and the Florida panther from Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell, perhaps this prominent use of these beautiful, curious and diverse animals will encourage respect and care for them and the environment.

Please check out the Series Masterlist page for more info.
