Well getting close to the end of the van build posts. It took me 5 months to build out the van and a great deal of that time was spent waiting on parts during shutdown. After living in vehicles for so many years I have learned keeping things simple and easily repairable is important in van life. I have seen some amazing van builds that look more like a work of art then a home. A lot of the new van builds use a lot of wood planks and hard woods which adds a ton of weight which cuts in to gas mileage. So I chose to use a nice cabinet plywood for wall panels and cabinets. I white washed and sealed all the wood to make for easy clean up from every day spills. For cabinet hardware I used old bolt hangers recycled form rebolting projects. Having a work space and a place to eat on bad weather days required a simple table. But this is the one time in the build I used a heavy peace of wood but I think it was well worth it. I finally got around to doing something about that hideous coloured couch / futon. I’m not sure if this is my final solution. Buying a simple cover made a huge difference. The big benefits are the cost and the biggest selling point for me was the ability to take it off and wash it easily. I’m still thinking of recovering the the couch but still debating that. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Parker York Smith has called Los Angeles his home for the past decade. As a menswear and lifestyle blogger and content creator for his site The Looksmith, Smith is a self-declared “fashion nerd” whose style ranges from sharp tailored suiting to tie-dye T-shirts, depending on his mood — and sometimes he wears both.

“[My] blog was started in mid-2015 on a whim after my wife suggested that I start taking pictures of my outfits and discussing how [and] why I put them together the way that I did,” he tells us. He may have always had an affection for style, but it is not necessarily what he thought he would be doing with his life.

“I was pursuing acting in L.A. for the first six years that I was here and had minimal success, so I liked the idea of becoming my own boss and setting my own schedule,” he says. “I graduated with my degree in electronic media and marketing, so I had a strong idea of what I was doing in this world, but learning the ins and outs was a new experience in the beginning.”

Smith draws inspiration from anything and everything. “I love to walk around the streets of L.A. and take mental notes of outfits that I appreciate,” he tells us. “I’m also a big believer in window shopping to see how mannequins are being dressed and what’s going to be in style.” He uses Instagram and Pinterest to curate rolling visual mood boards to refer to later on to generate ideas for specific shoots he wants to produce.

What did he do to plan for this outfit he shot? “Putting this look together was inspired by something that a guy who works in a modern office would want to wear,” he explains. “I’m a huge believer in dressing up for work (within reason) because it impacts output so positively.”

As for what stood out most about this outfit, it’s comfort. “Tech fabrics are something that I’m crazy about right now because of how great they look and how they can allow you to feel so much more comfortable all day long,” he tells us. “I like that [this outfit is] something that anyone could wear and look good. Dressing nicely on a daily basis is difficult for a lot of people because sometimes, looking good isn’t as comfortable ... it’s too tight or stuffy.”

Modern tech fabrics are great since they breathe and move much like other, more traditional fabrics. Innovation has introduced moisture-wicking and temperature self-regulating qualities from wool, silver, cotton, and others. Even polyester has come a long way from the days of leisure suits to now being incorporated in luxury designs that both look good and feel comfortable.

Smith says that after a long “winter” in Los Angeles, he is excited for spring. “We had our first ‘winter’ in L.A. in years, which means that it rained about six times and the temperatures were below 65 … [so] I’m really excited to spend a lot of time outside this spring and summer.” His plans include soaking up the sunshine at the beach, spending time at the dog park with their two dogs, and hitting some outdoor concerts. “We have a couple of weddings to attend as well,” he adds. “So that’s always fun.”

If you still feel like you may not be able to pull off something like this as the months get warmer, Smith has some sage words of advice: style is subjective.

“Just because you see me wearing this outfit and feel like it’s easy for me because of my proportions, don’t immediately assume it’s impossible for you to look great ... It’s easy to look at social media or magazines and assume all of those people just woke up like that,” he admits. “However it’s taken everyone years of trial and error (a lot of error) to figure it out. Stick with it! You’ll be glad you did.”
