i want more people to know about the Permanent Fund Dividend in Alaska actually. more US citizens specifically need to know our country has implemented UBI systems already (because of oil and businesses bullshit, but still. tldr is that citizens of alaska wanted compensation for everything that would not be there as resource for future generations). it has been going for decades strong. their website is uploading progress and performance reports constantly too. it’s just not talked about, at least not as far as i’m aware about, and the modern usamerican seems to think any sort of social system would be a sin despite the multiple ones we have on national or state levels. the UBI plan in alaska was another nail in the coffin of realizing our system is actively working against us.

on to the ranting

the alaskan people for better or worse modified the state constitution to have a cut of the profit coming off the land. i learned from this that people can organize and fight and put their votes toward meaningful change, but how the rhetoric around it matters. it was to save hope for future generations, i’d like to imagine thats why it went over well. today i feel like so much rhetoric has developed around “handouts” and UBI being bad because ooo scary taxes raising. we just don’t even recognize what has already been helping and what needs to become a more common practice.

imagine if every state with farm land for any big corporation was allowed to have 25% of the profit distributed across the entire population. not just those who work the land, but the people who complete the chain in cycles of production. factory workers. truck drivers. mechanics. the average parent who needs to raise a child and have enough to survive.

are there downsides? yes. people have to register, have to have residency, have to be a citizen, and be of adult age. it’s an opt in system, so they’re technically asking you for your information, but i can barely imagine an automated version of all this that wouldn’t still rely on documentation and ID somehow. the point is that it’s already been done, it’s been happening for longer than we tend to think, and it’s been working as far as i’m aware.

by all means the state of alaska is not in the best shape economically. they rely on gas and oil, and next to other mined resources their main profit is seafood. a form of agriculture. one that they continue to depend on even more as unrenewable resources are stripped away. i don’t like the fucking oil industry as much as the next guy but this is the exact “shave off profits of the rich to support the people” thing that i’ve seen everyone hoping and fighting for.

the future is not as far away as it feels, but it’s not close either. this won’t happen tomorrow. more and more people need to learn why UBI is important and even more importantly how we can learn from what’s happened in alaska and refine it to be less industry specific.

there have been 774664 studies on basic income and the results of every single one have been “wow! we gave people money and literally everything improved! crime rates are down! the actual sky is bluer! my (the researcher’s) wife decided not to leave me after all!” but these have all been short studies, just a couple years. i think what’s really missing from the field is a proper long form study, with a broader, bolder demographic, to really get us those numbers we need. a truly diverse study pool like, say, everyone. forever

● sotonya dibuat dengan penuh cinta 🤍 | Sekitar jam 4 lebih 15 menit aku berjalan kaki sendirian keluar menuju warung tak jauh dari asramaku. Ternyata warung yang hendak kutuju yang tempatnya persis di depan masjid sedang tutup akhirnya aku menuju berjalan ke warung dekat situ untuk membeli kapur ajaib, sebab aku melihat ada beberapa tempat yang banyak disinggahi semut. Setelah itu, aku bingung akan beli lauk di mana ya. Saat itu aku melihat ada abang² Siomay. Aku bilang pada diriku, yaudah kamu boleh beli siomay 5k berarti nanti untuk beli lauknya 5k ya. Eh, waktu aku berjalan mendekati abang² siomay tadi ternyata abang²nya sudah siap untuk keliling lagi, lalu aku urungkan untuk tidak membeli siomay. Dan berbelok ke arah warung dekat aku berdiri. Iya, aku melihat bapak² sedang menyiapkan pesanan soto pembelinya. Seketika aku juga ingin memakan soto krn sudah lama jg tdk makan soto. Jadi ceritanya memang tidak ada terbesit hendak beli soto untuk menu lauk makan siang sekaligus sore ini (makannya dirapel).

Akhirnya aku putuskan beli soto juga. Sembari menunggu bapaknya menyiapkan pesanan, aku berdiri mengamati sekitar. Tak lupa bapaknya yg melihatku berdiri mempersilakan aku duduk dulu. Akhirnya aku pun duduk, sesekali membuka hp dan kembali mengamati sekitar, mengamati ibuk dan bapak yang sedang menyiapkan pesanan dan pembeli lain yang berdatangan. Aku merasa hatiku penuh tenang ketika melihat senyum ibuk dan bapaknya serta orang-orang yang lewat di situ. Aaa ternyata bahagia itu sederhana. Ibuknya terlihat begitu ramah dengan pembelinya. Tak lupa bapak juga menanyakan kepadaku apakah sotonya dengan nasi atau tidak, pedas atau tidak, kuahnya mau dipanasi sendiri atau tidak. Karena mau sekalian aku makan jadi aku meminta langsung dipanasi saja. Terus bapaknya bilang kalau nanti nggak langsung dimakan mie nya bisa melar. Lalu aku menyaksikan kerjasama antara bapak dan ibuk ini. Aku melihat ibuk membantu memegangi panci yang berisi kuah soto ketika bapak memasukkan kuahnya ke plastik.

Aku juga melihat ada kucing di sana. Ohiya, sebenernya ini pertama kali aku membeli makan di sini kalau tidak salah namanya Warung Bu Basuki, ada di sebelah masjid atau di belakang kampus 3. Dan ternyata soto yang kudapat adalah soto terakhir untuk hari ini. Iyaaa, sudah pada habis. Bahkan, ketika ada yang hendak beli ayam geprek, ayam gepreknya sudah habis hanya tersisa lele dan nila yang sedang digoreng. Sepertinya besok² aku harus coba ikan nilanya deh. Ohiya, perihal makan soto dengan nasi, aku lebih suka ketika soto dan nasinya terpisah dalam piring yang berbeda. Mungkin sudah terbiasa seperti itu dari dulu. Berbeda dengan ketika di Semarang. Kalau beli soto dengan nasi, nasinya akan dicampurkan bersama sotonya menyatu dalam satu wadah. Pun soto di tempatku kuahnya lebih gelap, ya namanya soto tauto tapi kalau di Semarang soto kuahnya kuning. Sudah sekian cerita yang bisa kubagikan hari ini. i went to my first pride this year and i saw the most energetic woman at the drag performances. tipping every performer, multiple times, not just for each set but i think sometimes within the same set. rainbow stickers, one i was also wearing that said "y'all means all" if i saw right (i was at a distance), and a pride flag stuck in her braids.

we get to a part of the performance where the queen hosting does what i will lovingly call a queer roll-call. asked gays to cheer, lesbians to cheer, everyone under the umbrella to cheer, but then- she asked if there were any allies. this individual jumps and yells and she is smiling so wide, and i realized that very moment the ENTIRE time i had been genuinely assuming she was here & queer. she was an ally! the queen even comments "you got more energy than some of the performers out here girl, go ahead" and she just yells that she loves us. just this big loud "i love y'all" from the bottom of her heart.

i dont necessarily feel bad for assuming, but i learned something from this. i learned that i had never seen such an enthusiastic ally before, so seeing her enthusiasm at pride clocked her as queer to me somehow. this is NOT how it should be, pride is about community first and solidarity is necessary to achieve safer community. more importantly, just as prev post says, "they're a great reminder to the people in the community who are afraid that society in general hates us."

they remind us that support does not hinge on identity, but on general compassion and understanding. more allies at pride means more allies in the rest of the world. i have no data or whatever to back this up but i feel very strongly about it:

if theyre willing to show up for pride events with even the barest knowledge of how anyone at pride/going to pride will be perceived by bigots, theyre probably willing to be vocally supportive in everyday life.

There are two basic arguments for shutting the fuck up about cishets at Pride.

First: What if a trans kid asks their parents to show their support by attending Pride with them? What if a lesbian can only attend pride if she gets a ride from someone and the only person willing and able to drive her is her straight brother? What if a bi disabled person can't attend a large outdoor event without hands-on assistance from their straight partner? What if someone just wants to bring their fucking friends? What if, contrary to popular tumblr discourse, most queers don't inhabit perfectly pure social bubbles populated only by other queers?

Second and perhaps more important: If you think you can tell that someone is CIS, let alone HET, by LOOKING at them, you are a cop and an idiot.
