It should come as no surprise that Artists on Tumblr reign supreme: from stunning traditional art, jaw-dropping digital art, fanart, sculptures, textile art—you name it, basically—this year’s list shows that Tumblr truly is the home for art and artists. Thank you, Artists on Tumblr, for enriching our dashboards day after day. 

Rounding out the top three, we have two iconic shows: Good Omens is live-action, and The Owl House is animated, but both have a heck of a love story at their core. The second season of Good Omens blessed us with not one but two ineffably exquisite ships, while the final season of The Owl House broke and then healed fans’ hearts in equal measure. Thanks, @danaterrace! Actually, come to think of it, the Good Omens finale kinda did the same in reverse. Thanks to you, too, @neil-gaiman! We can’t wait for season 3. 

Speaking of heartbreak and healing, Our Flag Means Death’s second season offered both in droves. The entire cast gave stellar performances, and fans couldn’t have been happier to see the kinds of representation the show displayed. Last year’s #1 topic, Stranger Things, may have dropped a bit, but trust us, you wouldn’t know it from the amount of meta, fanart, and fics in the tag. And did you hear about the live-action adaptations of both The Last of Us and One Piece? They were a preeeetty big deal this year, too. Check ‘em out if you haven’t yet (lol, of course you have). And we’d be remiss not to mention the hugely dedicated fans, fanartists, and fic writers devoting their time to all things Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Y’all deserve a little pizza, as a treat.

2023 was also a year for blockbuster movies, which of course hasn’t escaped anybody’s notice here on Tumblr. Barbie smashed box offices worldwide and left us reeling with every re-watch. How can one describe Greta Gerwig’s pink-filled opus? It certainly is one of the movies of all time. Meanwhile, with its incredible animation and soundtrack, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduced us to a whole new multiverse of Spider-People, opening the portal to a veritable flood of incredible OCs. And then, of course, we got a fresh perspective on an old classic when cinephiles introduced Martin Scorscese’s cinematic masterpiece, Goncharov (1973), to a new generation of film aficionados who resoundingly agree that it is, in fact, the greatest mafia movie ever made. We’re so glad this underrated film finally got the acclaim it has long deserved.

In the realms of gaming and tech, the long-anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 has basically become everyone’s new favorite D&D/dating sim combination. Of course, the Pokémon franchise, games, shows, and Hatsune Miku collabs remain perennial favorites. Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, sorry, we mean of course X, made waves across the internet. Similarly, the Reddit blackout drove Redditors to new venues, and Tumblr users welcomed the folks from r/196 with open arms—we’re huge fans of your memes, y’all, and you fit right in. Welcome, we’re glad you enjoy the chaos. Here’s a fun fact: if we included post metadata in Year in Review rankings, #polls, introduced in January of 2023, would have been the #5 topic on Tumblr this year. Phenomenal. 

And, oh right. Taylor Swift had kind of a big year, what with the albums, the epic global tour, and the movie and stuff. Fantastic work, @taylorswift, the Swifties on Tumblr thank you for everything.

Sorry Not Sorry: The Truth About Why They Keep Coming for Beyoncé

In the constellation of pop culture, nobody—and I mean NOBODY —shines like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. From her Houston beginnings with Destiny's Child to evolving into the most decorated artist in Grammy history, Bey has redefined what it means to be a global icon. Her talent? Undeniable. Her work ethic? Legendary. Her cultural impact? Revolutionary.

And yet.

The criticism never stops. The questioning never ends. The goalpost keeps moving. At this point, we need to call it what it is: the criticism directed at Beyoncé isn't about her art—it's about America's discomfort with a Black woman who refuses to be contained by anyone's expectations.

Let me break it down for you.

History Doesn't Lie

Before we get into it, let's acknowledge some historical facts. This country has NEVER made it easy for Black women to achieve success. From slavery through Jim Crow and beyond, America built systems specifically designed to keep Black women from accessing economic power, creative control, and public influence.

Even in music—a field where Black women have been revolutionary innovators—artists from Ma Rainey to Billie Holiday were systematically underpaid, under-recognized, and exploited while watching their innovations become profitable for others.

So when a Black woman ascends to the absolute pinnacle of the entertainment industry while maintaining creative control and building generational wealth? The system doesn't quite know how to compute that.

The Undeniable Excellence

Let's pause for a quick reality check on what we're talking about:

- 32 Grammy Awards. THE MOST OF ANY ARTIST. EVER.

- Over 200 million records sold worldwide

- Her 2018 Coachella performance (Beychella) is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest live performances in modern music history

- Business ventures from Ivy Park to Parkwood Entertainment that have redefined artist entrepreneurship

- Cultural moments from her surprise visual album drop (which changed how the entire industry releases music) to her celebration of Black southern culture in "Formation" and "Lemonade"

These aren't subjective achievements. These are cold, hard facts. And yet...

"She Doesn't Deserve It"

The criticism always comes. She's "overrated." She's "just marketing." She's successful because of Jay-Z (as if Destiny's Child wasn't already dominating before they even met). She doesn't write her own music (despite her extensive songwriting credits). She's "manufactured" (because apparently two decades of vocal excellence and unmatched stage performances can be manufactured).

Tell me—when was the last time you heard someone questioning Justin Timberlake's talent? Or Taylor Swift's business acumen? Or Ed Sheeran's success?

This is misogynoir 101—that specific blend of racism and sexism that only Black women experience. The persistent idea that Black women's success must be explained by something other than their own brilliance and hard work is exhausting, transparent, and rooted in systemic bias.

The Sexual Double Standard Is TIRED

When Madonna pushes sexual boundaries, she's a "provocateur." When Miley Cyrus twerks on stage, she's "evolving as an artist." When Beyoncé embraces her sexuality in "Partition" or "Drunk in Love," suddenly everyone's clutching their pearls.

The policing of Beyoncé's sexual expression is straight from America's historical playbook of controlling Black women's bodies and sexuality. As media scholar Janell Hobson points out, our culture wants Black women's sexuality to be either hypersexualized for consumption or completely invisible—there's never room for nuanced, self-determined expression.

And don't get me started on the "is she a real feminist?" debates that followed her self-titled album. As if Black women haven't been developing complex feminist thought around sexuality, autonomy, and liberation for DECADES. Read some Audre Lorde before coming at Beyoncé's feminism, please and thank you.

God Forbid a Black Woman Gets Political

The moment Beyoncé explicitly centered Blackness in her art—from "Formation" to her Superbowl performance—suddenly she was "divisive" and "angry." The nerve, the audacity to suggest that a Black woman should stay "apolitical" when her very existence in America is political!

White artists make political statements constantly with minimal backlash. But when Beyoncé celebrates Black southern culture or references the Black Panthers, it's somehow controversial? Make it make sense.

This expectation that Black women should remain silent on issues directly affecting their communities is what philosopher Charles Mills calls "white ignorance"—the delusion that political neutrality exists when, in reality, silence only serves to maintain the status quo.

Impossible Standards Are the Point

The criticism of Beyoncé's activism and feminism is always moving the target:

- Her feminism isn't "intersectional enough" (while white feminist icons get passes for much more problematic stances)

- Her wealth makes her activism suspect (while billionaire white male philanthropists are celebrated)

- She's "not doing enough" (while doing more than most artists would ever risk)

The point of these impossible standards isn't legitimate critique—it's to ensure that no matter what she does, it's never enough. It's to exhaust and delegitimize. And we see right through it.

The Media Game Is Rigged

Let's talk about how these criticisms get amplified:

Headlines about Beyoncé disproportionately focus on controversy rather than achievement. When she's professional and exacting about her art, she's labeled a "diva" or "difficult." When she maintains privacy about her personal life, she's "secretive" or "calculating."

Meanwhile, digital algorithms boost negative content because outrage drives engagement. Search for information about Beyoncé, and you'll find criticism ranked higher than her actual accomplishments.

This isn't accidental—it's part of what tech researcher Safiya Noble calls "algorithms of oppression," digital systems that reproduce and intensify existing biases.

The Double Standards Are BLATANT

The receipts are endless:

- When Beyoncé does brand partnerships, it's "selling out." When Taylor Swift does the same, she's a "marketing genius."

- When Beyoncé meticulously controls her image, she's "calculating." When Prince did it, he was a "visionary."

- When Beyoncé evolves her sound, she's "trend-chasing." When white rock bands do it, they're "reinventing themselves."

- When Beyoncé launches Ivy Park, critics question if she's really involved. When Rihanna launches Fenty, the same questions don't persist with the same intensity.

These aren't subtle differences. They're glaring double standards that reveal the bias embedded in how we evaluate Black women's success.

Why the Beyhive Stays Ready

Now you understand why the Beyhive is so protective. We're not just fans—we're witnesses to how the culture tries to diminish a Black woman's excellence at every turn.

For many of us, especially Black women, Beyoncé's success represents rare mainstream affirmation of our beauty, talent, and cultural contributions in a media landscape that routinely renders us invisible or stereotyped.

Our "stan culture" isn't blind worship—it's a collective response to recognized patterns of racist and sexist criticism. It's creating spaces where we can celebrate excellence without the constant filtration of bias.

Not Sorry

Understanding the systemic nature of Beyoncé criticism isn't about shutting down legitimate artistic critique. It's about recognizing when "critique" is actually recycling tired stereotypes about Black women.

It's about acknowledging that what looks like isolated opinions actually forms a pattern that aligns perfectly with America's historical treatment of successful Black women.

It's about calling out the fact that neutrality is a myth when the standards are fundamentally unequal.

As Beyoncé herself said: "You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation." And the conversation her success generates reveals far more about America's persistent biases than it does about her art.

The next time you hear someone dismissing Beyoncé's talent, questioning her agency, or holding her to standards they never apply to her white peers, ask yourself what's really behind that criticism. Because I promise you, it's rarely just about the music.

To quote the queen herself: "Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper." And with 32 Grammys and counting, I'd say the revenge is going pretty well.

not gonna lie i browsed the anti taylor swift tag outta boredom and wow why do swifties keep doing all of this. Like u guys can stop and focus your energy somewhere else and no treat others awfully it's ok i promise

i think our culture has a huge problem with idols (meant non-religiously, i promise), icons, influencers, stars, demagogue politicians etc. sure there are passionate fans of many kinds around the world, but swifties seem to reflect a particularly potent overidentification with celebrity. it's been pretty well defined by others why that is - she is an 'attainable ideal'. she's not too model-perfect so as to be unrelatable, or too talented to be seen as more than human. the outtakes from her music videos highlight her human-ness (breaking costumes or props by accident etc). people can think, 'she's just like me fr, but with global fame and a huge budget.'

so unfortunately they don't seem to see much boundary between who THEY are and who SHE is. that keeps the investment level very high in defending her.

It's no secret that the former power-couple's relationship ended with bad blood as cheating allegations regarding Neymar leaked in January of 2018. The pair announced their split on social media two weeks later. However, it seems as if the Brazilian is not ready to give up on his ex yet. He has posted multiple instagram posts using lyrics from her recent album Lover which the singer wrote about current boyfriend, F1 driver Charles Leclerc. We have yet to get a statement about this from Leclerc or L/N.

SMTOWN LIVE 2025 In 2025 Adds KAI And NCT 127 To Their 30th Anniversary Celebration

SM Entertainment, a leading force in the Korean entertainment industry, has announced exciting new additions to the SMTOWN family concert in Los Angeles. Scheduled to take place at Dignity Health Sports Park on May 11th, the event will now feature top artists KAI and NCT 127, joining an already stellar lineup that includes global superstars like aespa, NCT DREAM, WayV, RIIZE, and NCT WISH, all coming together in LA for the first time. Despite two members of NCT currently serving in the military, the group is set to deliver incredible performances for fans eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see all the units of NCT NATION united at one event.

Fans can look forward to special appearances by legendary artists such as Red Velvet, Super Junior, TVXQ!, SHINee’s KEY and MINHO, and EXO’s SUHO and CHANYEOL. Known for its history of outstanding vocalists and talent in K-pop, there will be an exclusive showcase from the SM Trainees, SMTR25, providing a sneak peek at the next generation.

The red carpet events for VVIP guests will offer a chance to see all the artists scheduled to perform. The soundcheck will include four artists: KEY from SHINee, WayV, RIIZE, NCT WISH, and Hearts2Hearts.

This tour will be the only stop in the United States, with additional concerts scheduled for Mexico City on May 9 and London on June 28.
