Mal realizes that Scott can be empathetic it’s just that he’s had to get through life by being cold and manipulative because he had no other choice. Scott’s mindset is “I can fix him and I will” and Mal’s mindset is “I can fix him but I will try to make him worse”

Mal ultimately fails because of Scott’s fucked up backwards way of thinking and generally doing everything. However neither of them realize that the other one is trying to manipulate them into being more genuine and trusting. (my evidence for this claim is ep 12 of all stars where they make a deal with each other but both of them are like “this guys so stupid he’s literally letting me win!!”) they both think that the other is naive and not just playing along
