My random ass Ty headcanons. You're welcome.

He gets along shockingly well with small children because they're honest and don’t expect him to act a certain way

He doesn't understand pop culture references but loves it when someone explains them in a way that makes sense to him.

When he's s thinking, he'll often speak out loud to himself. It's not a full conversation, but he'll make observations or ask rhetorical questions as if he's still processing thoughts.

He can juggle. No one knows how, not even Ty himself. But he finds it oddly satisfying and the people around him find it endearing.

He sleeps in absurd positions sometimes. He'll fall asleep in the most contorted, awkward poses. He wakes up stiff but doesn't care enough to change. (basically canon after he slept in front of Kit's door, period.)

He owns a pair of sunglasses for no reason. Ty never wears them outside unless he's feeling particularly adventurous. They're a pair of oversized, old-school aviators that Kit once jokingly said made him look like a secret agent, and Ty loved that. (there's that official art of the TDA gang on the beach when he's wearing sunglasses, you know? I wasn't able to stop thinking about that. EVER.)

Ty likes to listen to rain. Not the relaxing type - he specifically likes heavy rain, the kind that sounds like it's pounding against windows.

He has an irrational fear of vibrating phone alerts. Not because he doesn't like the sound, but because they remind him of something he can't quite place. So, he turns his phone's vibration off, even if it means missing important calls.

He once tried to teach Irene to play fetch. He had the most serious, scientific approach to it: training sessions, rewards, everything. Irene, of course, didn't care at all. Ty got frustrated but still kept trying, even though he knew it wasn't going to work.

He loves rainbows. Not in an overly cheerful way, but the spectrum of colors in a rainbow always catches his attention.

He doesn't get most jokes but he has a secret love for puns. He doesn't admit it, but when someone tells a particularly terrible pun, his face will twitch like he's holding back a grin.

Kit once tried to teach Ty how to play poker, only to realize he was terrifyingly good at reading microexpressions.

He unconsciously tracks Kit's breathing patterns, noticing when he's anxious before Kit does.

Ty can do a perfect impersonation of Julian. It's weirdly accurate. He's never shown anyone except Livvy, but sometimes when he's alone with Julian, Ty will mimic his tone and mannerisms to entertain himself.

He has a favorite chair in the Blackthorn Hall library. It's an old armchair by the window, and it's the perfect spot for him to just sit and read for hours. The Blackthorns know this is Ty's chair, and no one ever sits in it unless Dru's trying to get his attention.

He wears mismatched socks sometimes and it drives Julian insane. It was an accident at first, but Ty actually kind of liked how it looked when he noticed, so he kept doing it for a while. Julian tried to convince him to wear matching pairs, but he just kept saying that he didn't see the point.

Livvy was the only one who could ever get away with trying do Ty's hair without him complaining. She even braided it once when it got a tiny bit longer.

The Perfection that is the Kickstarter Art

Let's talk about how every season perfectly matches each character.

Dru's confident, always funny, has no time for stupid things, and so much more. She's BURSTING with life, just like summer is. Summer is the time that things are harvested because they've grown into what they're meant to be. Just like I know Dru is going to grow into the exact kind of epic hero that I know she's meant to be when it's her time to help save the world in TWP. Think about it, we know she hadn't quite figured out what her place was in TDA since she was always seemingly put on the sidelines to help with Tavvy since she was younger. In TWP she's grown up and will be maturing into the kind of people Emma and Julian were in TDA.

Summer is also the time that sun is seemingly always out, ice doesn't stand a chance in this season. In this way, I can see Dru melting away the ice that has probably formed around Ash's heart from having such a tumultuous and traumatic childhood and being raised by people like Janus, Annabel, Sebastien, and the Seelie Queen. She will also help him grow into the person he is meant to be in TWP.

As mentioned above, Ash's life up to the point when TLKOF starts has been anything but filled with warmth and love. It's been cold and frigid, devoid of care and filled with Sebastian's sadistic ways, Janus who was most likely preoccupied with getting Clary instead of giving Ash a stable childhood, unhinged Annabelle briefly, and the Seelie Queen who I can't imagine is the most loving mother in the world. It's understandable that he will most likely have some iciness to him that will sting other people when he first interacts with them. However, winter does not last forever...

Because Spring is always right around the corner. I think it's absolutely brilliant to make Kit represent Spring and Ty represent Fall. Spring is a time for rebirth, new beginnings, and blooming despite the harsh winter that just occurred. Kit has been through so many unimaginable things like being raised by Johnny who was very much not a loving presence in his life, finding out he is apart of a people group that he actively despised, then learning that he is part of one of the most famous Shadowhunter families of all time, and THEN finding out that he is also the heir to both faerie courts. Kit had every right to let this shatter him and make him run away. Yet time and time again we see Kit meet these unexpected turns with an undying capacity to love others like Ty, Livvy, Dru, Jem, Tessa, Mina, etc. Yes, as Spring he occasionally has the bitter remnants of winter show up in him but he’s overwhelmingly a person characterized by the promise of Spring. Of embracing new beginnings and loving even when he's been shown love himself far less then he should have been.

Tiberius Blackthorn, you as Fall makes me quite sad. Ty was raised in a summer-like house. Sure, his family has been through so much with losing both of their parents and the Dark War, but they've never ceased to wrap each other in love. His was a life filled with the warmth of summer but in the latest books we see him slip farther and farther from that warmth both figuratively and literally. Figuratively, we see how he's starting to be more separated from people that care the most about him because of raising Livvy. His family because of how he has to keep it a secret and Kit because of what the aftermath of the resurrection did to their relationship. Literally, we see him move from sunny Los Angeles to the icy Scholomance in the Carpathian Mountains. Fall is when things start to decay and lose their vibrancy and I'm quite afraid this is what is happening to Ty :( He almost seems like he's a bit faded in the most recent official arts of him, especially the one in the Kickstarter that included him, Livvy, and Irene.

Also, do you notice that all of the other books only have a single word on them (well, we can't tell from Ash) like Spring or Summer? Yet Ty's is "The Fall." Could it symbolize how he's figuratively fallen since the death of Livvy, hurtling toward a frightening future because of his necromancy? It also kills me how he seems sad in his artwork while the rest seem happy or at the very least nonchalant.

I saw that you finished reading TID, do you think Will amplifies the other characters in the book? 

Looool 😭 😭 the way I would not have been able to answer this question yesterday, but since I saw the post this morning, on my way to work, I know exactly what you are talking about.

First of all I don’t know if you are the same anon who sent the ask to @tiredandoptimistic about @edwin-paynes-bowtie reading of the series, if it’s you, hello! If it’s not, well, hello as well. (Sorry guys, had to tag you for traceability.)

Before answering the question, I need to say something, and it’s in no way an attack against you anon or anyone else. I’m actually very open to discuss the books with you guys, and my asks are open to the most controversial takes. BRING THEM ON.

However, I think, it’s really important that I pinpoint something fundamental —that is currently missing in this fandom— and that’s the right to have different opinions on books. Since I don’t know if it’s the same anon, I’m going to address everyone who fumbles upon this ask. It’s okay to not have the same reading, views, understanding, and experience as others, when reading a book, or consuming arts in general. Maybe some of you are young but truly, the world is not a sect, and people are going to have very different opinion on characters and themes of the same books. And that’s fine, no one is going to die from it.

I’m saying this, because I don’t know if this ask was sent as a genuine question, and you want to know my opinion on this (even thought I never talked about characters amplifying other characters), or if you are looking for someone to validate your opinion on this particular take. If it’s the first, I will answer you. If it’s the second, FREE YOU! How others feel about characters, and how they read them is not the only way to do it, and you should be fine by it. There is no sacred text we should all abide by when it comes to art. Live your truth, you don’t need validation from other readers. Like I said, this is not an attack, and I don’t want to come off as aggressive, but I really don’t know where this is coming from, since I literally never talked about the TID characters dynamic like this.

Anyways. Here’s my answer.

Do I think Will amplifies the other characters in the book?

And my answer is, no. I think he amplifies shit😭 And I’m not saying this to be funny, I really don’t think he does. To me, the characters are all rounded, three dimensional characters. When Will is out of the picture, they are still very compelling to read about. Will does not add anything to them, especially TID Will.

Tessa is a very caring, loving, loyal, funny, sassy character without him, and she keeps on being that character throughout the series, even though he’s been dead for I don’t know how many years (see: GotSM, TEC, and TDA).

Same for Sophie, she was hater #1 against him and Jessamine, and I did not need Will to add something to her. And I know the book is written from the PoVs of Tessa and Will, but again, I did not need Will to make me not “surface level” read Jem, and realise that he is more than the character who is dying/best friend, and is not “the jumping around, clown, making noise character” of the series, to be appealing. Maybe he was a bit washed out in CA, but by CP1, we got to know him well. There is a scene I remember from my reread of CP1, when I was wondering why was he acting like an ass,  “Oh, bother,” said Jessamine with an exasperated sigh. “Why do I always get the silly tasks?” “Because you don’t want the serious ones,” said Jem, sounding as close to exasperated as Tessa had ever heard him. Neither of them noticed the icy look she shot them as they left the library behind and headed down the corridor.” That was totally unwarranted, Jessie was a tiny bit annoyed that she was going to be left out, that’s all💀 I’m not going to go into a "Jem is a 3d character essay” here, I already did that, and it’s somewhere under the #JemCarstairs tag.

Going back to Will. The story goes on after his death, and the characters are still good, rounded, compelling, and have a continuity (Jem and Tessa, get older, mature, but they are still the same, nothing is missing) if you get what I mean. And so on, I’m not going to go into every character Will interacts with.  Do I think all the characters would have been flat without Will in the series? Absolutely not (ex: TID (when it’s not about him, and GotSM). Do I think the series would have been good without him? HELL NAH!  Sorry to disappoint, but Will is the love of my life, and teenager cursed Will was a banger😭😭 That child was funny as hell, while going through shit. His surface actions were shit (for a reason), but the hidden ones, with Jem, Tessa and Charlotte are his essence, and his true self. That man is the kindest most loving man, and he did everything to protect his loved ones. And he continued to do so in TLH (still did not reread the series).

And all of this is in the text, it’s just another reading of the series.  

I’m going to give you two other examples about different reading of the same text. One of them is Henry and the other is Tessa, just to ramble, and emphasise what I mean.

Henry is one of the most beloved character in TID, and I get why? However, when I did my reread (as an adult with a developed frontal lobe) I could not stand his guts. To me, he is a useless husband, he never pulled his weight in the Institute, and it was frustrating to see him always absent minded every time Charlotte needed him. There is a seen that still triggers me to this day 😭 it’s in CP1

“Brother Enoch is here,” Charlotte said to the assembled group. “I must speak with him. Will, Jessamine, do try not to kill each other while I am gone. Henry, if you could . . .” Her voice trailed off. Henry was gazing down at a book—Al-Jazari’s Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices—and paying no attention whatsoever to anything else. Charlotte threw up her hands, and left the room with Sophie.”

And that’s one of many scenes. Most readers find him funny haha, I did not, but that’s my reading of the character.

Last example, I have is about my girl Tessa. I think Tessa is better off away from the Clave, and their bigotry. I still have to reread GotSM and TLH. The fact that she was still insulted, ostracized, and she was the fucking Clave, co-running an important Institute, and still seen as lesser than because of her warlock side, was frustrating.  Ex: “Of course Mother and Father scarcely ever went to Idris. Of course, James and Lucie had been raised in London, a little apart from their families. Because there were people in Idris, there were arrogant Shadowhunters who thought Mother was not worthy to walk among them, and Father would never have let her be insulted.”

I think older, and more mature Tessa, who lived with Downworlders and warlocks, is better off than young Tessa who cried when Tatiana insulted her, and her kids at her home, and her lineage was still debated 25 years later. Her warlock side being shunned by the Clave (90% of shadowhunters are bigoted anyway) I think, was later reflected on how she had to raise her kids. Like, she did her best, but the hostility of the Clave made James hate that part of himself from the beginning. “James might be a stain upon the world, might be something that would contaminate good Shadowhunter children. He was ready to believe it. But not Mother. Mother was kind, Mother was lovely and loving, Mother was a wish come true and a blessing on the earth. James could not bear to think how Mother would feel if she thought she had hurt him in any way.” And “I waited for you to ask me for help,” Ragnor told him. “I thought perhaps you might make a warlock.”“I never wanted to be anything but a Shadowhunter,” James said helplessly. Ragnor said, sounding disgusted as usual: “You Shadowhunters never do.”

And then you have “free-er” Tessa of 2013 “…and it might have been longer had they included Gray, but Tessa said that warlocks chose their own name, if she chose to be a warlock. Mina might choose to be a Shadowhunter. She might be anything she pleased. She was everything already.”

But in the same time, I know that in order to get to 150 years old Tessa who’s not going to take shit for being a warlock, 40 years old Tessa had to go through that. But I’m going to write a long essay on Tessa vs the Clave, once I finish TLH, because I need more elements to my case 😭

Wow, this is getting too long.

What I’m trying to say is that, other readers must have other interpretations of these scenes and quotes I just wrote, and that’s the beauty of art and books. Different opinions of the same text will always exist, and it’s totally okay. Share your wildest stuffs guys, that’s the point of arts.

HAPPY (LATE) BIRTHDAY TO MY SILLY DHMIS OC HELMET!!

Now, I'd really want to talk about something.

October 2022 was when I showed the first drawing of Helmet, my dhmis oc, and the same way it turned one year old recently, my Tumblr account had also turned one year old some days (or weeks) ago. The first fandom I interacted with here was the dhmis fandom, dhmis was an hyperfixation of mine that is still kind of living rent free in my mind. The moment I started interacting with the fandom I felt like I was being welcomed with open arms, people made fanarts of my silly little Helmet and interacted with me, and I'm not lying when I say I finally felt like I was really part of a fandom, like people actually liked and enjoyed the stuff I did with Helmet, like I was finally part of something. Thanks to the fandom I met some of the best mutuals I could ask for that I still like to "talk" to them from time to time (I'm looking at you guys @brightlydim @reoltherabbit @softshell-enthusiast :3 ), I honestly couldn't be more grateful not only for the people I have interacted with while I was active in the fandom, but also for the amount of fun I've had in it. I'd seriously do anything to be able to go back to those days, I loved every second of the period where the fandom was active, and all I'm able to say is thanks to everyone who had made me live one of the bests times of my life, even if it all happened behind a screen, those days will always have a special place in both my heart and memory.

Bio: The most biased participant in the group. She specializes in self defense and athletic principles, making her a good instructor to teach her teammates to be more active and aware of danger; though there are certain criteria before she teaches anyone anything. But despite highlighting her martial arts background and eagerness to fight often, Tenko is a coward at times to extreme situations who tends to avoid conflict due to her low pain tolerance. She doesn't really add anything less to her team besides her martial arts, but she will criticize and talk down to her teammates for no reason (only towards the men though). It's been seen quite often that Tenko shows bias against the men on not only her team but everyone else on the show as well; willing to protect and defend the girls for their mistakes, but ready to jump on board pointing the finger at the men that did nothing wrong. Obviously this gets her in trouble more often than she thinks, but she does have her moments when she will comfort some of her male participants if she sees them carrying burdens that are too heavy to carry on their own. 

Goal: She only intended to use the show to showcase and promote her innovative Neo-Aikido, a self made martial art created by herself and her "master". But by any chance that she actual wins the game, then she promised to use the money create her own dojo and spread her self defense techniques to all the woman around the world.

Lady Midnight: Prologue

- oh how I’ve missed you 15 year old Kit Rook 😩🤚 (your dad is still a dick tho)

- I sure do not remember any of the main plot points of this series and it shows

- oh shit Jem and Tessa mention?!? I sure didn’t realize it was them the first time around (but I just reread Ghosts of the Shadow Market so they’re on my mind)

- how common do you think blue skinned warlocks are?? or does Kits mention of seeing one mean he’s seen Katarina before (at least in passing)?

- god I love listening to the audiobooks for my rereads because the narration choices are always *chefs kiss*

Long ass text about Geoff’s character, and what I wish could have been done . Also, skip to the bottom, which is the pink text if you don’t feel like reading the yap I gave

I wish geoff could have a bigger role throughout seasons 2-3 then 8 , the writers couldve done something more with him i guess

I know its just a cartoon/kids show, therefore not needing so much lore any kid can’t understand

. . but i like to imagine that TDA geoff didn’t actually revert back to being a wild party guy - rather continued his behaviour onto later seasons and sort of went crazy to the point he realises hes not himself anymore too

Geoffs the kinda guy to enjoy fame . Im projecting myself onto him now and its possible for him to become so obsessed with his attention and pride to the point he entirely changes

I’m an artist, I guess so. I’m not saying i’m famous, but for a while i feel like i did feel famous - and during my lovely era, i guess i did change how i acted towards others. i was getting more into drawing, less of playing and hanging out for the sake of seeing more likes and views

Crazy how fame changes you, its common . anyway, my point is, if the writers did correctly use the time he had for aftermath - they couldve made aftermath a little more interesting by making him tweak out more often and a much more relatable person for anyone whos been affected by. fame changing issues and stuff (Perhaps addiction too. I kind of see geoff having an addiction to pleasing others and fame)

I hope you get what i mean . Just, imagine TDA Geoff that’s a little more crazy and terrible but you can understand why he does it. He just wants fame. That’s what the little guy just wants, just the world to look at him, thats part of his talents which is to become popular and known, and he wants to make the best of it

Anyway back onto why i wish he didn’t revert to a wild party guy..

He could keep his party traits but just .. Damn!! write him a little more mature ! ! He’s at 19, he should be somewhat smarter.. But right now, his RR self to me is just a dumb guy. I like dumb guys, but RR geoff is a LOT dumber than TDI geoff. To me, he should be a little more grown up i suppose . He’s awesome, chill and still my favourite, but he feels like he’s another one of those characters that turned 1-dimensional..,,

What if RR geoff was more mature, and slightly anxious about how people viewed him? Like what i mentioned, i stopped hanging out often to focus on my art and to grow views on my account.

That didn’t end well, some of my friends ghosted me in return. Some of my friends felt like i treated them like shit because of the dry replies i gave. Yes, I’m sadly admitting that while I didn’t hang out as much, I also gave shitty messages and texts just to easily brush them off and to go back to my drawings

So, considering that, geoff must have also had friends that started seeing him a lot more different . and began to sort of dislike him - i think bridgette, at some point didn’t recognise who he was as well. i know a lot of people notice this too . It’s a common effect of being driven by fame and changing yourself

And, i feel like in the process of growing up from when he was 17 and to 19, he must have thought at some point, had he not been obsessed with fame - people wouldnt dislike him.

geoff obviously doesn’t want anyone to dislike him, he wants to be chill with everyone . possibly, zero tension. But, then, he knows that he can’t undo things, therefore that impression of himself by his friends that used to like him will always remain

Following up on that, it greatly affects him in the future with how people think of him .. he becomes extremely guilty of his actions, and naturally stressed with first-time impressions than he was with people before. He supposedly should feel more laid-back when talking to others for the first time, but now he feels that he should tone down on his excitement and appears a little more awkward .

This seems like a lame boring text, but in summary,

I wish the time Geoff was knocked with some sense impacted the audience more. Dragging out the climax of him changing differently due to fame and then shattering him completely by making him realise himself that he’s began to lose complete control over himself .

Not by an electric chair, literally, just himself alone after possibly losing everything and then finally . . realising he was the one that was being shitty to others. Then, when he grows up, the incident he had brought upon himself actually affects him and he no longer ends up being all that fun and out going, maybe more mature and careful about others around him.

His guilt haunts him in RR, and I wish the writers wrote things that made him remember how he acted in TDA, and that just deeply hurts him during the races which also in a way, distracts him from competing properly . His bud Brody has a better role, to try and help Geoff realise he’s changed for the better

Last thing. I doubt anyone would read into Geoff’s character, most of the people I see in this fandom barely cares about him.. But for those who atleast want to look into him more..!!!

Rating all Trent ships I've ever came across

Trent×Gwen - The only canon ship and for what it was, I liked it. It always felt like just a summer fling and them being each others manic pixie dream girl/boy is a detail I highly appreciate. It was the most artsy teen romance of all TD ships and should stay as only that 7.5/10 cause it does make me cringe nowadays

Trent×Justin - I don't know who was the first person to come up with this ship but holy shit their brain. And even if you're too good to fall for the trope of "two guys amicably standing next to each other", these two would be the Larry of the TDverse, which you have to at least admit it's funny as shit 10/10

Trent×Duncan - Listen. I've also been a 15 year old girl, I get it, but this is shit. They either forget about each others existence or actively hate each other. Even the fanfics I used to read back then had to jump through hoops or make them ooc to even get them to stay amicably in the same room 0/10

Trent×Geoff - The better version of Duntrent. They still ignore/hate eachother but there's literally no reason for it which is so funny. They're both pieces of shit and the only time it was justified was when Geoff was trying to protect Gwen over the breakup. Read the TDA bios, they're still trying to poke at some rivalry we never see on screen. AU writers I beg of you, write a enemys-to-enemys fic of their fighting backstage 3/10

Trent×Leshawna - I was really surprised when I first saw this ship cause I'd only ever seen them as sort of "friends-in-law"? But now that I sit down and think of it, it could work?? Leshawna is assertive but also laid back, kind and has a lot of goofy moments. And Trent is a certified wife guy™. I'd never thought of this ship myself but it could work 9.4/10

Trent×Noah - Once again, would have never thought of this if I hadn't read one of the best ship-centered fanfics this fandom has to offer. But I think it works better in that specific fanfic than realistically speaking. Trent isn't the exact type of pathetic (positive) Noah hangs out with and in the long run they'd both be too messy. If Gwent is the cuter side of teen romance, Trent×Noah would be the depressing side. I never watched the show, but from what I remember from "2015 grunge tumblr", it's giving Skins vibes 4.8/10

This may be a veeery unpopular opinion, but an acquaintance of mine once said she doesn't like Cassandra Jean arts anymore, because they stopped conveying the spirit of the characters. And Kitty's new art made me think of it. Because this art is beautiful, but what's wrong with Ty? Why is he not just lower than Kit, but MUCH lower?

Why does he look the way Cassandra Jean drew him during the tda release? Why does he look like a kid?

And at the same time, she had no problem drawing Ty before. He looks 18 years old on the flower card and the art for a sobh. And in the second art, he looks AT LEAST the same height as Kit.
