VCF West XIX is in the bag.
I hung out with @ms-dos5 and @virescent-phosphor, plus plenty of other cool folks from the Retrotech Crew. Only took 10 years to finally cross paths with Vi, since meeting here on tumblr. I also spotted a @foone briefly at the end of the day.
A few experiences of note:
An air conditioning compressor caught fire.
I went to an e-waste facility.
I had to buy another suitcase for the extra shit I bought.
I visited a bunch of air and space museums.
I experienced the wonders of in-n-out burger shakes.
I hauled monitors on a broken hand cart.
I spoke with an early Apple employee and out-technicalled him.
I was recognized by a former Commodore employee.
I got tasty snacks from a Japanese market.
I scored some junk and some parts from surplus sellers.
I watched an Apollo DSKY run.
I showed people my PCB projects.
I learned about a TVT version that was new to me.
I'm fucking tired, but that was awesome. Catch you on the flip side.

obviously u like topher x joan but how far does it really go? just curious cuz ur always making fanart and even fanfiction about them
Yeah, drawings, drabbles, edits, comics, collages, smut, videos, everything two dimensional I can manage! when I get a better computer with a good video editing software and a animation program it's all over for y'all~~♥!
I FUCKING SHIP IT WOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♡ww♡
What made you ship it?
I fell down the "this is a pretty funny ship" to "hol up this actually makes a lot of sense, this ship kinda fire" to "these motherfuckers have consumed my every thought and its GREAT!!!" pipeline xdd.
The more I thought about it, the better it sounded, the more ideas I had, EVERYTHING CLICKS SO PERFECTLY WTFFF
It do be like a sliding scale with me in the middle approving a het ship with Joan where sliding negative leads her with Confucius and sliding positive she ends up with Topher lolxd
What are your favorite things about the ship?
WHERE TO BEGIN!!!!! Well, they are terrible people and can always get worse, either doing shenanigans and bothering everyone in the process or just ignoring everyone to be in their own world~~
Age gap, people. It might be a technicallity but they do be 20 years apart and thats like, the best thing ever and the OW/YM strikes again so it's EVEN BETTER!!!!! And with their unconvencional tastes, they'd have A LOT of stuff to share and talk about and teach and learn and they could have so much fun with their niche lil hobbies and references that nobody but them could get and memes that could scar the average angloparlant for life!
And they both have this,,, love for nostalgia (not as apparent in topher, ill concede that its more of a hc) so reminiscing about the past or catching up with things they never lived could be so themmm and so fun to explore~~!!
To bring back something I said earlier, I also really dig the isolation of it all. How Joan feels betrayed by everyone but Topher is there to give her all the attention and devotion that she wants. I haven't decided if they'd finish school or drop off earlier but they do feel like a couple that could ride into the sunset to never be seen again as they build a new life for themselves~~.... it's just that after what happend, I don't see her going back to her old and new friends, but I totally see Topher manipulating all that he can to keep it that way, including Joan. They do be having some unhealthy clinginess towards each other and that's soooo damn good >w<
And yeah, I like Topher getting positive female attention, he looks cute when he likes girls and whoever said that they turned Joan into y/n was so right she really is very easy to project to x_v
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
That's the fun part! As the Queen of Joanpher, is everyone else the who may have an unpopular opinion, my word is law and the other 3 shippers are pretty much in similar Joanpher wavelengths. It is a very instinct ship, ya either get it or ya don't. I don't care and don't have to care bout what non shippers have to say btw 737
Joanpher tastes like: EVERYTHING!! I have eaten so many delicious foods, of many flavors and textures, and when it's Good I go uff si esto es muy joanpher =w=~ but if I had to pick one dish, it'd be The Brochette! Anything you can cook in a stick and directly on the fire cause it's hot as hell~♡! Any type of meat, any kind of vegetable, oil, sauce, sugar, salt, caramel, tender, crunchy, mushy, firm, literally all!! The most important part is that it must be eaten out of the metal stick, like gnawing meat out of the bone, cause it's both raw and wild plus ~elegant and sophisticated~
#ask#ask game#ship ask game#joanpher#ch joan of arc#topher bus#clone high#QUE BUEN SHIP CTM AAAAAAA#mucho texto#es queeee me hace hablar es el mejor ship de todos por diossss

A Ramble on Grimwald, My Golden Guard OC
To start, the name “Grimwald” means “prevail,” which is one of the ways that inspired my design of his personality despite intending it initially as a morbid joke.
I made Grimwald based on the idea that he develops Philip’s obsessive behavior growing up, but aimed at Philip himself. I personally headcanon that Philip hand-makes each of the Grimwalkers a special item (like Sprig for Hunter) to foster attachment and dependency to him. So, when he’s about six, Grimwald gets a quilt that he keeps literally until the day he dies. He finds out about the Grimwalkers when he’s sixteen.
What happens is that Philip turns into his beast form and flees up to the Titan’s skull. Grimwald follows him and eventually catches up on the bridge area. Philip grabs him and YEETS him off the side in a moment of anger, but Grimwald survives the fall using magic (even if he does get beat up). He lands in the Golden Guard pit and sees all the bodies/masks. Obviously traumatized, he cries for a while but makes no move to leave. Philip eventually comes down after regaining control to see if Grimwald died.
However, Grimwald immediately runs up to him, throws his arms around him, and asks to go home (back to the palace). Philip is surprised but intrigued, so he allows this to happen. Grimwald doesn’t ask about it and continues about his duties until Philip kind of goes, “Aren’t you curious about what that was?” And Grimwald says he was waiting for Philip to be ready to talk about it because he doesn’t want to push him.
So Philip decided to do what he does best and manipulate a child. He tells Grimwald that he is a human and Caleb is his brother reincarnated of brought back from the dead because he failed to stay with him (Philip) like he (Caleb) promised in his first life.
Philip gives a heavily altered course of events that paint him as the good guy, witches as the bad guys, and Caleb as bewitched and an abandoner. This makes Grimwald feel immense responsibility for Caleb’s actions, and he makes an Everlasting Oath to never abandon Philip as long as he lives.
After that, Grimwald refuses to leave Philip’s side unless ordered to and always returns as quickly as possible to him, placing emphasis on efficacy and ruthlessness to please Philip. He additionally becomes convinced that the only reason he connects with witches is because he is “tainted” by the Grimwalker form and basically gaslights himself into dehumanizing witches and that his empathy for them is entirely because he is a flawed reincarnation.
During time when there are not other witches around, Grimwald tries to recreate himself as “Caleb” by acting brotherly towards Philip and attempting to simulate that relationship again. It works fairly well, and Philip sometimes slips up and calls him “Caleb” (which Philip is really proud of because he sees it as proof he’s succeeding).
However, Grimwald begins to detest his appearance because it does not look the way that it used to “when he was human.” This leads to an incident where he tries to cut his ears to look human but is stopped by Philip. During the time after the revelations, Grimwald only communicates with people other than Philip out of necessity.
The whole thing lasts four years, with Philip slowly realizing that Grimwald is becoming self-destructive due to the guilt he feels. He will risk punishment and danger rather than failure, but it has lead to medical expenses for healing and hospital trips due to lack of self care.
Grimwald’s last mission is one where he is sent after a shapeshifter type of creature similar to Grom. It turns into Philip upon seeing Grimwald, and the latter feels to terrified and worried to harm it simply because it has the appearance of his creator. Grimwald dies in the ensuing fight, and the creature runs off. He is twenty years old when that happens.
He doesn’t initially realize he is dead when he wakes up as a ghost. He returns to the palace, ready to accept his punishment. But Philip doesn’t acknowledge him. Grimwald thinks he is getting ignored for failing, so he just sits in the throne room until a scout comes in to bring Philip news of his death. Afterwards, Grimwald spends much of his time watching Philip and his successor (Darius’s mentor) before beginning to leave the castle and wander around the Isles once Hunter is created.

“Bytro Labs should be a place where everyone can and wants to make a difference every day”
Interview with Bytro Labs’ Managing Director Tobias Kringe.
Yesterday we brought you part 1 of our studio report of Bytro Labs, developer and publisher of high-quality strategy games which are played by more than 8 million people in 150 countries and 13 languages. In part 2 we talk to Co-Founder and Managing Director Tobias Kringe.
Making Games: You founded Bytro Labs 10 years ago. How have your wishes and dreams about running a gaming company changed over time? Tobias Kringe: Initially the dream was to turn a game idea into a profitable company. Then it was finding the right way to turn it into a long-time success, a project in which it is still worth investing after 10 years. Today it is the team and people who trust in Bytro who drive us. We want to build a company that is successful for the next 10 years and be a dependable and fun place to work for our team. One thing has never changed: We want to make games that we love and that have a meaning for us.
How much has your job changed you? / How have you personally changed over the past 10 years? Running a (growing) company means constant learning. Every two years or so my job has changed completely. First it was about learning how to make games, game design and the technology behind it. That was very hands on, and very different from what we as founders do on a daily basis today. Maybe the hardest thing for me to learn is not working hands-on and getting real satisfaction from what others achieve. I missed being able to go home at night and know which great feature in the game I developed that day. Today I am proud of the company and team we have built and what it is capable of. It fills me with joy to see the results that are much better than anything I could to myself in most areas.
What is your company philosophy in a nutshell? We want to develop the best online strategy games, utilizing technology that allows us to stay lean. Bytro should be a place where everyone can and wants to make a difference every day. We never grew just for growth‘s sake, but to be able to create and publish great products.
What is the secret of your success? How do you stand out from the huge competition? With our long-term strategy games we have created our own niche with a very dedicated fanbase. The key was to be able to scale, by reaching our audience with profitable, targeted marketing and partnerships. We were always very data-driven to achieve this. Essential for reliable growth is the longevity of our products. We have constantly updated and modernized our games. We have pioneered the use of HTML5 for our games in the browser, and I‘m proud to say that we are best in class to get the best out of that technology. And that allowed us, for example, to bring Supremacy 1914, to the mobile stores this year – leading to the highest revenues in the ten year‘s history of the game.
In 2013 you merged with the Swedish Stillfront Group. What advantages did this bring you and were there any disadvantages? Joining Stillfront was an essential move for us, both as founders and as a company. We never needed external funding, but in a hit-driven industry it is important to have a reliable environment for growth. You could say that Stillfront handles our investor relations and – if needed – growth funding, while we can focus on creating great and profitable games. Bytro is now part of a much bigger story, and our success also fuels the immense development of the Stillfront Group. Today the group consists of 12 studios, three of those in Hamburg, and is constantly growing. With all those studios we share a common DNA of being self-made, independent companies, and benefit from sharing insights, ideas and resources. Conflict of Nations is a co-development with Dorado Games. Disadvantages? Not really, unless you regard implementing proper accounting standards as a disadvantage :)
Your games are Free2Play. Why is that your preferred business model? Free2Play is the payment model that works best for online and mobile games. In the end, it is what players want: play the game for free and start spending money when you know it’s worth it. But I also believe we have to provide fair value: customers get what they pay for, and paying in our games does not just lead to the next, even higher pay wall.
Some of your games deal with the first or second world war. Why did you choose this scenario? Those conflicts are intriguing fields of study for many history buffs for their sheer scope and relevance for history. Look at the the anachronistic militarism, politics and diplomacy that lead to World War 1. The way the war with its brutal technological development was fought seems like protagonists were playing a game that went horribly wrong. When, the other way around, you play our games and you notice the diplomacy looks almost real it sheds a fascinating and scary light on reality…
Which of your SP games is your personal favourite and why? I like Supremacy 1914 for its relative simplicity in combination with complex player interaction, diplomacy and fun roleplaying. Playing the game with a group of friends is still awesome after 10 years. But currently I’m playing more Supremacy 1 – The Great War, which is (despite its name) the newest installment of the series, and currently in open beta.
Regardless of the games you’ve produced so far, what kind of game would you always like to develop? A transport sim focusing on planning and running a deep mining operation. Think of Transport Tycoon meets Factorio meets Sim Tower. For me (as a gamer), this premise has a lot to offer: planning and optimization of logistics, technicall progress through the centuries and the hazards faced in the depth. I’m just not sure if I’m the only one :)
How many employees do you currently have? Do you have any vacancies, if so, which ones? Bytro currently has a team of 40, including the game production teams, live operations and marketing. We are always looking for enthusiastic people to join Bytro to make a difference. Especially, we are looking for an experienced game- or data analyst to take the lead in our data processing, to help us answering – and asking – the right questions. There are several developer positions to fill. Passion for games and technical excellence should be their main driver. A great fit can be anything from experienced game engine developer to HTML5 frontend enthusiast, from junior to lead level. Last but not least, a great artist with focus on 2D/UI/UX could help us to make our games even better and more accessible on all platforms.
What makes you particularly attractive for applicants? Every professional can make a difference at Bytro, starting on day one. We work in small teams on products we love. Our goal is to empower everyone to achieve their best and constantly grow professionally. Bytro offers great working conditions, team events and benefits and a nice office with one of the best 360° views in Hamburg. But even more important: an international team of like-minded experts who share the goal of creating great games.
