I think I'm slowly getting a picture of a narrative. This is tricky though. If I had uh- known what the fuck I was doing six months ago, I would've titled the presentation, "Alum mining, trade, and metallurgy from Bronze Age to Present" and called it a day.
The lax definition of alum's chemistry also makes it really hard to pin down. It ranges from hydrous to anhydrous (impure and pure) aluminum sulfate salt to aluminum clay. Civilizations until the Roman era just kind of pointed at white shit, called it alum, licked it to see if it was sour (not salt) and tossed it in the chemical vat.
There were also specific locales for the good shit. So instead of saying 'alunite', you'd say 'alum from the Hittites', or 'alum from Egypt'. One could be used for tanning, but the other was used for a fancy blue glaze (cobalt-clay). You could also produce alum from alunite, like on the isle of Lesbos (Sappho historical romance novel with alum when??)
But. Within all this. You have the Babylonians primarily using it as a tanning agent and wool-dyeing. The Egyptians used it as a glaze, for pottery, and medicinal/metallurgical uses. Apparently blue beads were making it all the way to China and Scandinavia at this time? The Romans took the metallurgical uses and cranked that up to 11. After the fall of Rome, the Arabs used alum for all the above and Germany was also using it metallurgically, but my research ends here right now.
In the present, alum is still used as a mordant (dyeing agent), but is more often used as a water treatment flocculant (filtering impurities). It's also more rigorously defined as either ammonium, potassium, or sodium hydrous aluminum sulfate. Whether we still mine it is unclear?? It doesn't seem to be the case: we mine aluminum, get aluminum oxide, which either goes to Iceland to be made into pure aluminum, or is sold separately and then added to Na2(SO4) to make alum.
It doesn't really pack the same punch I wanted it to with clothing though, because it's not really used for that. Chromium sulfate is now the primary mordant if you're doing chromium tanning, which is environmentally bad and kind of like nuking a hide to make it tan fast. I guess I can track down where the chromium is coming from, and how they make that.
This isn't even getting involved in plastic production, or rayon, or nylon, or the history of fast fashion and petroleum. I think the end line of this will have to be something vague and unspecific, like "disregarding the non-renewable resources that go into <I want to say artistic, but they're not artistic. The proper term is probably female-driven industries lol> fundamental human tools can lead us to overlook industries that have just as much impact - economically and socially - on geopolitics."
... I can already see the first question on that being, "what are some other non-renewable resources you think have been overlooked?" :') ahh, idk. I've been reading for 30hr. I'm going to go to sleep. I'll run away from the podium or smthg.
to do: I should reread Al-Razi with alum in mind... the translator is not Levey, so I have to chemically check all the names she gives minerals. But I distinctly remember alum coming up several times and tripping me up.
Also chromium sulfate manufacturing/mining; saving this chrome/ferric reference because I haven't seen them written altogether anywhere else.
#I'm so tired but I'm a little closer than I was yesterday lol. That ending isn't terrible. Not great given what I planned to present#but very much still in the realm of my abstract and mining engineering.#That's kind of the chain on my wrist lol. I do still have to make this about mining engineering. There are a bunch of chemists here.#They are going to come to this presentation asking WHY clothing and ideally I still make the thing come back to mining engineering and#why systematic oppression under nonrenewable resource-driven industries matters.#Bits of my abstract from six months ago are popping into my head and making me laugh. I'm also technically supposed to cover the#/technology/ of all these civilization while /using/ alum. Oh... past!pulta you really got us in it now.#ptxt#alum#edit: actually zinc and lead oxide would make a really good 'underappreciated ancient nonrenewables' list.#Yeah lead was common af but it also made up the ancient world's pipe system and ho baby it's so sexy and fun.

the thing that gets me about the lack of technological literacy in a lot of young gen z and gen alpha (NOT ALL. JUST A LOT THAT I SEE.) isn't necessarily the knowledge gap so much as it's the lack of curiosity and self-determination when it comes to interacting with technology.
you have the knowledge gap side of things, obviously, which highlights issues related to the experience of using pieces of hardware/software becoming detached from the workings of the hardware/software itself. you start seeing people (so called "ipad kids") who are less and less familiar with the basics of these machines—like knowing how to explore file and system directories, knowing what parts of the system and programs will be using the most power and interacting with each other, knowing what basics like RAM and CPU are and what affects them etc. these aren't things you need to sink a lot of time into understanding, but they seem to be less and less understood as time has gone on.
and this lack of familiarity with the systems at work here feeds into the issue that bothers me a lot more, which is a lack of curiosity, self-determination, and problem solving when younger people use their technology.
i'm not a computer scientist. i'm not an engineer. i have an iphone for on-the-go use and i have a dinky 2017 macbook air i use almost daily. that's it! but i know how to pirate things and how to quality check torrented material. i know how to find things in my system directories. i know how to format an external hard drive for the specifications of my computer. i know how to troubleshoot issues like my computer running slowly, or my icloud not syncing, or more program-specific problems. this is NOT because i actually know a single thing about the ~intricacies~ of hardware or software design, but because i've taken time to practice and to explore my computer systems, and MOST IMPORTANTLY!! to google things i don't know and then test out the solutions i find!!!!
and that sounds obvious but it's so clear that its just not happening as much anymore. i watched a tiktok the other day where someone gave a tutorial on how to reach a spotify plugin by showing how to type its url in a phone's browser search bar, then said "i'll put the url in the comments so you guys can copy and paste it!!!!!" like ?????? can we not even use google on our own anymore?? what's happening???
this was a long post and it sounds so old of me but i hear this lack of literacy far too much and the defence is always that it's not necessary information to know or it's too much work but it is necessary for the longevity and health of your computers and the control you have over them and it ISN'T too much work at all to figure out how to troubleshoot system issues on your own. like PLEASE someone help.
#part of it is at the fault of the technology itself#phones and tablets hide a lot of their system workings in favour of app-forward interfaces#unlike pcs and laptops which have them easily accessible at start up#but once again.... the lack of curiosity... troubleshooting.... problem solving#long post#and this isn't even going into the lack of problem-solving and self-driven research when it comes to interacting with media#the ''what song is this????'' ''what movie is this???'' ''what is this from????'' PLEASE where is the LOOKING the SEARCHING the FINDING OUT

I love reading your thoughts about discovery. Huge ds9er here. I watched discovery once, s1,2 as they were streaming and last year the rest. I don't remember much but I feel that pretty much what you said about pilot and georgiou apply to most characters and arcs. We are more told about the characters than seeing them ourselves (With a couple of exceptions). For example Michael's arc, her motives, struggles, growth etc I never saw them myself, I was kept told that she's been through this and that, that she changed etc but I never felt it. IMHO it was a show with so many potentials but it needed better writing and better character development
exactly!!! by the time they tried to do a soft reboot in s3, i was still asking myself who these characters even were (except for michael, but you're right too about her. i remember watching in like s2 and still not understanding how the hell she fit into her strange backstory. and the actor is great, but there's only so much acting can make up for). how am i supposed to care about them if all i know about them is a little quippy intro and then they just never do anything with the characters
the thing about discovery, for me, is that it's kind of a bad show but it had the potential to really start something and grow into itself too like you said. same could be said for picard too until they dropped all their original characters.... like they keep getting scared of their own new characters so they rely on gaslighting and nostalgiabaiting to cover it up. and discovery was the first, right, so that's understandable that they were still finding their footing. but then they didn't ever lol. the constant focus on fancy technology and being "cool" and making wild dramatic connections to past canon that just doesn't make sense and then moving past things like they were nothing.... at some point you have to back all that up with real character-driven story that should make people want to keep coming back to it. i don't really dislike any of the characters in discovery mostly because i don't feel strongly enough about them to care either way!! lol and somehow new trek still hasn't learned this lesson almost a decade later.....
#thank u anon!!!!#i am always open to talking/complaining about this kind of stuff lol which i know isn't everyone's cup of tea#it's just so wild to me that the people in charge of star trek don't even seem to like star trek#star trek is barely about fancy technology saving the universe. that's just a vehicle for really intricate character work#and new trek seems to have it opposite#don't even get me started on snw. they got the character-driven memo but decided to make up new characters and call them tos names. cowards#amongst other issues..#man what are they even gonna do after snw ends. like if THAT failed what's next you know??

So what are the caps on your drinks from Spinda's cafe made of? Magi Glass?
Guildmaster: It's crazy, because somehow pokemon know what glass is here! The first time I saw a cup I asked my Wigglytuff mama if it was made with magic or something from a dungeon, and she explained that it's sand that gets heat up until it melts, and then talented pokemon can make them into different shapes! Some things also use metal lids, and they'll even imprint logos and other crazy things on them! I have nooo idea how they came up with that kinda thing. They probably dug up a bunch of old human artifacts and studied them!!
Keaton: Well. You've heard the phrase "history repeats itself", haven't you sir?
Guildmaster: Yeah!! ... What's that got to do with it?
// one thing that I always think is interesting about how pmd is interpreted is the level of technology folks seem to think the pokemon have accessible to them. somehow it's easy to imagine that they have an organized postal system (implying the existence of addresses, which implies the existence of property borders and surveying, and also implies a printing press or at least reliable access to writing materials- and not just for scholarly purposes, but to write newsletters and junk mail on a wide scale), an economy (implies the development from a trade and barter system, as well as the ability to smelt and manufacture a currency), and complex architecture involving steel I beams (something I'm pulling from gurdurr's shop in gates which i'm sure is just meant to be visual shorthand, but it's something developed in the mid-1800s which is around when light bulbs came into the scene)... but they somehow don't know what glass-blowing or threaded fasteners are despite being a technique developed almost 2,000 years before a lot of those other things lmao. not to mention even older methods of craft like clay which date all the way back to over 20,000 years ago. I think a lot of it has to do with how pmd itself isn't quite consistent with what technology exists, trying to go for a medieval but whimsical feel with a few comforts from modern day thrown in. but playing around with those expectations with characters like the guildmaster and julius is fun B) I'm of the thought that if a society has developed language, culture, and economy, it's not really far-fetched to think they'd have basic comforts
#on borrowed time comic#ask-obt#guildmaster#wigglytuff#ooc#I also base a lot of OBT's world on how I lived every summer during my childhood- which was in handmade structures in the woods#it was to set up for an art-driven event with a whimsical aesthetic. i'd share pictures but i already doxx myself enough on the internet lo#OBT's technology and hobbies are based off of what we had accessible to us during those months#keaton#chatot

One thing i would love more scifi movies should do, is the focus of human relationships, especially love.
Many scifi pictures focus on the action part and complex world building and yet fail to interest the audience because the characters aren't given much attention. Where are the people having friends and goals? People having dreams and hobbies? People striving for connection and relationship?
I would like more stories set in the future, with characters still act and driven by love and how blissful or catastrophic it can be.
#love stories in scifi it's somehow really rare#i know people love the concept of future possibilities and technological advances#but where's the human emotion??#where's a space tragedy driven by grief or revenge?#star wars could count but that's one every 50 scifi movies that do the same formula#dune and other denis movies as well

AI’s Role in Business Process Automation
Automation has come a long way from simply replacing manual tasks with machines. With AI stepping into the scene, business process automation is no longer just about cutting costs or speeding up workflows—it’s about making smarter, more adaptive decisions that continuously evolve. AI isn't just doing what we tell it; it’s learning, predicting, and innovating in ways that redefine how businesses operate.
From hyperautomation to AI-powered chatbots and intelligent document processing, the world of automation is rapidly expanding. But what does the future hold?
What is Business Process Automation?
Business Process Automation (BPA) refers to the use of technology to streamline and automate repetitive, rule-based tasks within an organization. The goal is to improve efficiency, reduce errors, cut costs, and free up human workers for higher-value activities. BPA covers a wide range of functions, from automating simple data entry tasks to orchestrating complex workflows across multiple departments.
Traditional BPA solutions rely on predefined rules and scripts to automate tasks such as invoicing, payroll processing, customer service inquiries, and supply chain management. However, as businesses deal with increasing amounts of data and more complex decision-making requirements, AI is playing an increasingly critical role in enhancing BPA capabilities.
AI’s Role in Business Process Automation
AI is revolutionizing business process automation by introducing cognitive capabilities that allow systems to learn, adapt, and make intelligent decisions. Unlike traditional automation, which follows a strict set of rules, AI-driven BPA leverages machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision to understand patterns, process unstructured data, and provide predictive insights.

AI is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s here, and it’s already transforming the way businesses operate. What’s exciting is that we’re still just scratching the surface. As AI continues to evolve, businesses will find new ways to automate, innovate, and create efficiencies that we can’t yet fully imagine.
But while AI is streamlining processes and making work more efficient, it’s also reshaping what it means to be human in the workplace. As automation takes over repetitive tasks, employees will have more opportunities to focus on creativity, strategy, and problem-solving. The future of AI in business process automation isn’t just about doing things faster—it’s about rethinking how we work all together.
