I propose that there are three lenses through which the “It’s Just Fiction” argument can be viewed: in-universe, authorial intent, and public interpretation.

Before jumping into the analysis, I should note that there are a few assumptions here:

The fiction in question is actually fiction, and does not resemble any real life persons, living or dead in an identifiable capacity. Therefore, things like the Ted Bundy Case Files are immediately disqualified.

The In-Universe Lens

Identity Through Technology?

In relation to media convergence, Brownstein’s “The Realest Real” and Turkle’s “Together, Alone” both have relatively negative messages.  Both videos warn of the dangers of screen time, but in very different ways.  

While I found Brownstein’s video to be entertaining, it contained very little in terms of persuasive arguments.  I understand the message she is trying to get across revolves around the sense of self we create on social media being inaccurate, but exaggeration—such as the forms referenced in the video—is a technique used in many forms of communication, including face-to-face.  Furthermore, vernacular—which, in this context, I am defining as a form of language or dialect which is attributed to a particular group or groups of people—is used in all different forms of communication, so perhaps society is creating a social media vernacular which can be understood properly in its own context. I found the video to be funny and enjoyable, but I don’t think it is fair to criticize people for choosing to adopt phrases which are commonly used in a particular setting in order to get a particular point across.  

Turkle’s video “Together, Alone” seemed much more contentious to me than Brownstein’s.  I agree with some of what Turkle said during her Ted Talk, but also strongly disagree with much of her harsh criticism of society’s technology dependency.  Relatively early in the video, Turkle talks about the yearning to customize our lives to fit our desires.  She says she believes we choose to use technology while living “real life” because we yearn for all our desires at once.  While I will be the first to tell anyone I am consistently on my phone while watching T.V. and I have been guilty of ignoring someone in real life because I was reading a text on more than one occasion, I do not believe this is an issue of obsession over instant gratification so much as it is a short attention span and a matter of convenience.

One aspect of Turkle’s video I found a bit upsetting was her lack of recognition of individuality. She spent a lot of time generalizing and speculating about a whole society of people’s habits and desires. While I understand much of Turkle’s argument is likely applicable to a substantial amount of Westerners, I also think there are many other reasons people turn to screens instead of people which she failed to recognize. ��During the 20-minute video, I thought of quite a few reasons, such as social anxiety, ADHD, and introversion.  Personally, I am an introvert, so pulling my phone out when I am in a public space is a great way to show people I am uninterested in talking or overwhelmed in a crowd.  Furthermore, as a woman who lives in a big city and uses public transportation often, I am familiar with receiving unwanted attention in public and being on my phone is a good way to avoid that type of harassment.  Turkle discussed using our phones to avoid “real life” conversations, but she failed to acknowledge some people almost need to avoid others in certain situations, which disappointed me.  Furthermore, before technology as we know it, people were still using entertainment to avoid interaction in public, such as reading newspapers, magazines, and books, so I wonder what Turkle feels is different about those forms of escape in comparison to technological escape.

Another aspect of Turkle’s argument I found controversial was about humans trying to connect to their technology.  She talked about how technology is just machines and cannot empathize, therefore rendering them an ineffective form of comfort.  While I do agree that people should find something in life that comforts them more than the validation of others (which is often what comforts people about social media), I do not believe humans are the only thing that can comfort another.  People go to many sources for comfort, including books, nature, and hobbies such as sports or crafting.  While none of these things have, as Turkle put it “[any] experience of the arc of the human life,” they still assist many humans in managing stress and sadness.

Perhaps what I found most disturbing about Turkle’s argument is how subjective it was.  While I understand she is more of an expert than I will ever be, Turkle spent a substantial amount of time generalizing with very little facts or statistics which prove her arguments.  At the end, she suggests our children will grow up unable to connect with others if this dependency on screens continues.  While I know technology is growing quickly and ever changing, I do not think it is the deciding factor in whether or not future generations have interpersonal skills.  As a millennial, I grew up in a huge technology boom.  I got a cell phone when I was 13-years-old and used it constantly. I grew up on computers and playing video games; regardless of this fact, I am still now a sociable human being with good interpersonal skills.  I am probably what many people would consider a “phone addict,” and yet I still have very strong relationships—familial, friendly, romantic, and professional.  I understand as technology advances lack of interpersonal skills may become more of a problem, but I find it suspect how definitively Turkle claims this without any form of logos to back up her theory.

I understand what Turkle is trying to do in this video, but it just feels a little too preachy for me.  I agree with the general idea that we need to be mindful of the effects of rapid technological advancement, but her statements were too sweeping and subjective. The video felt like another preachy middle aged woman lecturing millennials on the dangers of cell phones.
