Who is the Ferrari of the Motorcycle World?
A bit of a short blogpost this week since this is that time in my writing schedule where I've just posted a chapter of Fastest of the Prancing Horses, have to post this month's chapter of Racing in the Golden Age, and then back to Fastest of the Prancing Horses for that story's biweekly uploads. Self-imposed fanfic upload schedules aside, let's talk motorcycles.
Who is the Ferrari of motorcycles?
Ducati comes to mind first, being Italian and red and heavily associated with racing. The fact that when Ducati entered MotoGP in 2003, it had a very Ferrari like set of sponsors didn't hurt either. Marlboro and Shell at first, then Telecom Italia's Alice brand got involved in the late 2000s, and after diverging a bit in the early 2010s - when Ducati had a sponsorship with Mercedes-AMG of all people - they both wound up with Philip Morris' Mission Winnow as a sponsor.
And around the same time as Mission Winnow, both gained Lenovo sponsorships. Ferrari's Lenovo deal seemed to only last for 2018 and 2019 and has recently been replaced by a title sponsorship from HP, whilst the ties between Ducati and Lenovo have only grown stronger, becoming a title sponsorship from 2021 onwards.
So, the sponsorship is very similar, but it's not the same.
Plus, there's now a pretty big stumbling block to the whole Ducati = Ferrari thing.
That being that Ducati is owned by Lamborghini. Yup, in 2012, Ducati was acquired by Audi - which itself is part of the Volkswagen Group - and Ducati was placed under the control of Lamborghini. So, in a funny little shell game, Ducati was owned by Lamborghini who was owned by Audi who was owned by Volkswagen.
So yes, Ducati may have the superficial resemblance to Ferrari, but being owned by Ferrari's greatest rival kinda breaks the whole comparison.
Another thing that doesn't help is that Ducati's Grand Prix racing history is rather recent. Sure, their history with superbikes and the Isle of Man TT, with famous riders like Mike Hailwood and Carl Fogarty, but they did not have that MotoGP pedigree until 2003 onwards. Even then, Ducati only had a single 2007 championship until their recent (2022-present) success.
So, how about someone who does have GP pedigree?
MV Agusta.
The massive amount of success that MV Agusta had with the likes of John Surtees, Guy Hawking, Mike Hailwood, the great Giacomo Agostini, and Phil Reed gave MV a stranglehold over the 500cc class from 1958 to 1974, a level of domination that Ferrari could only dream of.
The problem is that, since then, MV Agusta hasn't really had the money to race.
They've tried a couple of times, with various Superbike and Supersport efforts, most prominently with Reparto Corse who is still in WSSP, as well as a brief partnership with Forward Racing in Moto2 between 2019 and 2022. None of this compares to MV Agusta's past greatness, and none of it is really comparable to Ferrari either.
That being said, on the road bike side, I think MV Agusta matches Ferrari in terms of being these rare, expensive, incredibly desirable things. Ducati is no slouch either in that regard, but, come on, just look at a MV Agusta F4 or Superveloce and tell me those aren't some of the most beautiful motorcycles ever made.
So MV Agusta and Ducati both meet some criteria, but both fail at some others.
So here is another contender: Aprilia.
Now, Aprilia's racing history started rather recently, but they've done a lot in that time - their 125cc and 250cc bikes dominated the lower classes of GP racing in the 90s and 2000s, with riders like Max Biaggi, Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi, Marco Melandri, Alvaro Bautista, Jorge Lorenzo, and Marc Marquez all taking championships on board their bikes and then going on to have massively successful careers.
Even once the two-stroke success dried up, Aprilia took the fight to World Superbikes, winning the 2010 and 2012 titles with Max Biaggi and then the 2014 title with Sylvain Guintoli. The likes of Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri also took wins on the Aprilia WSBK bikes at this time.
Their factory team efforts ceased in 2015, but that was because Aprilia was entering MotoGP.
First with Gresini, Aprilia began a long preparation period, but come 2022, Aprilia was ready. Gresini went its own way as a Ducati satellite team, while Aprilia entered a full factory effort with Aleix Espargaro and Maverick Vinales.
Aleix would win in the third race of the season at Argentina and finish fourth in the standings while Maverick took three podiums and an eleventh place finish.
In 2023, Aleix would win at Britain and then sweep the weekend at Catalunya to finish sixth in the standings, while Maverick Vinales was just behind him in seventh. That Catalunya race would also mark Aprilia's first 1-2 finish.
2024 wasn't as strong, but Maverick Vinales still swept the weekend at COTA on his way to a seventh-place championship finish, whilst Aleix Espargaro won the sprint race at Catalunya for the second year in a row, a fine feather in the cap for his retirement year, even if he did slip to eleventh in the standings in the process.
Now, with Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin as their riders - and Jorge having the option to put the #1 plate on the Aprilia if he so chooses - Aprilia is certainly on the way up in MotoGP.
Oh, and the team is run by former Ferrari man Massimo Rivola.
If that's still not enough to convince you, then let me take you back to the 90s when, for a brief period of time, it seemed like the Piaggio Group (Aprilia's parent company) and Fiat (then Ferrari's parent company) were on the verge of a merger.
Giovannino Agnelli - the nephew of Fiat supremo GIanni Agnelli and the son of Antonella Becchi Luserna Piaggio, the adopted daughter of Enrico Piaggio - became President of Piaggio in 1993. In 1995, Gianni Agnelli officially named Giovannino his successor...only for Giovannino to pass away from cancer in December 1997.
Gianni Angelli would die in January 2003, with the Ferrari F2003-GA named in his honor.
Had Giovannino not predeceased his grandfather, Aprilia and Ferrari could well now be sister companies.
Another side effect of the whole Piaggio ownership thing is that Aprilia's sister companies include Moto Guzzi, Gilera, and Derbi, and those brands certainly fill out Aprilia's racing history.
Gilera was the first giant of 500cc motorcycle racing, winning six titles between 1950 and 1957. while Moto Guzzi wasn't quite as successful with its 500cc V8, it did win the very first 250cc championship in 1949, as well as five consecutive 350cc titles from 1953 to 1957.
As for Derbi, it had a ton of success in 50cc and 125cc GP racing with Angel Nieto in the 70s, and then later on during the golden age of two-stroke Aprilias, Aprilia had some of their bikes badged as a Gilera or as a Derbi.
Marco Simoncelli won the 2008 250cc title on a Gilera whilst Marc Marquez's aforementioned 2010 125cc title was on a Derbi.
So, when you put it like that, Aprilia does have a pretty consistent history in GP racing after all, huh?
Well, if none of those convinced you, there's a surprise fourth candidate, because the rumor mill is that, with KTM's financial difficulties, Lewis Hamilton is in talks to invest in the KTM MotoGP team. So, there is a possibility that we'll see a MotoGP team owned by a Ferrari Formula One driver in the near future.
Yup, after all these Italian companies, the Ferrari of MotoGP might end up being the road racing arm of an Austrian dirt bike company.
We live in strange times.

So I may have been slightly hyped for this book the past few months
For the three of you who haven't heard about this, MMPR: The Return is a story set in the future of an alternate universe of the MMPRs; one where Jason, Zack, and Trini didn't give up their powers upon the eve of the Peace Conference, and thus the team stayed together even after high school. But fast forward twenty-two years later, and the team has broken up due to some sort of tragedy - we know from the Re-Imagine prologue in the 30 Year Anniversary book, Zordon and Alpha were destroyed by Zedd and Rita. But other stuff seems to have happened too. What is that stuff? I guess we're about to find out!
Oh, and I should mention this was written by the original Pink Ranger herself, Amy Jo Johnson. (and her partner, Matt Hotson.) That might be important to know.
It's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1!
= Three pages in and Jason's already getting his ass kicked. You're forty-five years old, man, you should be at the club
= I know this was debated a bit when the book was announced - how it would line up with Thuy and JDF's passings, especially after coming off the heels of Once and Always, where the focal point was Trini's daughter taking up her powers after Trini's death. (For what it's worth, this book was first conceived pre-pandemic, long before OaA. Making comics takes a long time.) And while Tommy is still a bit up in the air (despite what we'll see in a few pages) Trini does seem to have definitively passed due to illness.
While I definitely get the frustration of Thuy's passing essentially sealing Trini's fate - especially in a comic book, where you don't have to worry about actor restrictions - I'm a little more generous towards it here because Amy and Thuy were close friends and she actually dealt with her death personally compared to how the OaA writers, well......didn't. And this issue is clearly paralleling Kimberly's motivations and feelings to Amy's real-life ones, so this just feels like another part of that.
(Also to contrast OaA's handling of Trini - a) her passing here isn't caused by a graphic onscreen explosion, proving the whole "well they HAD to show it onscreen for more impact!!!" was bullshit b) her friends AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY are actually grieving and talking about her impact on everyone as well as using the non-actor-restriction to SHOW it and c) The book actually gives her a JOB. TWO jobs!!!!!!! Yeah OaA why the fuck did you send ZACK to Congress WHEN IT CLEARLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN TRINI
also I like her middle-aged design. prettyyyyyy)
= onto lighter topics HEYYYY IT'S THESE GUYS!! Bulk and Skull are married and you just can't see the ring through Bulk's gloves, it's real and true
= speaking of which this whole flashback is adorable and nostalgic but I want to point out some background details
= Ernie is just trying to run a fucking business here
= go white boy go
= ZACK/KIM HAS FINALLY COME BACK TO ME MY FUCKING BELOVEDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God, when WAS the last time they actually talked one-on-one in the main series
= FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
= so along with some other stuff I'm definitely taking this as foreshadowing that Trini wasn't cut off from Kim like the boys were. That's the power of WOMEN (and also if we get Aunt Trini flashbacks with Olivia I'll fucking CRYYYYYY)
= Absolutely obsessed with Billy's face here
= D:
= So besides the Trini stuff I want to the keep the Once and Always comparisons to a minimum but it's very funny how both storylines involve Billy using a company as a front for his embezzlement schemes. At least his telecom company PROBABLY isn't war profiteering
= also Alpha's rose <3
= so anyway Jason's gone rogue and was pretending he's the main character until he suddenly went missing, as shown in the first few pages. And Billy and Zack want to become Rangers again to try and find him.
= but the thing is guys, Kim has won the idgaf war. She's depressed, she's traumatized, she spent twenty-two years raising a child with Tommy's genes all by herself, she's tired. She does NOT want to be wrapped up in Jason's midlife crisis drama
= Zack getting so mad and wanting to risk it all for Jason hell yeah those are my Jason/Zack crumbs
= Mysterious shadowy figure watching the old people drama from a distance, you are just like me fr
= OLIVIA THAT'S FUCKING OLIVIAAAAAAAAAAAA and she already sounds so CUTE. If you go back to the diner scene you can see the phone constantly buzzing until Kim finally puts it away. She's like mom. mom. mom. MOM
= also just because the tragic Tomberly family storyline already makes me want to kms do you think that ring is kind of small and plain because Tommy and Kim were so young when they got married and it's all Tommy could afford. And Kim still wears it to this day. I want to die
= It's already been confirmed that Selena is indeed referring to Sylvia here, so I won't talk about that. What I DO want to talk about is Kim's casual momwear. Those sweatpants!!!!!!!!!!
= It would be really funny if Kim just. immediately slammed the door shut

News At Six 1986 Visits The Lincoln - Part Three
.
.
A couple of weeks before I visited The Lincoln, I made the lovely discovery that the pub didnât only feature in The Newsreaderâs S01E04 - rather, it made an appearance in S01E06 too!
You might remember a scene of Rob Rickards ringing Noelene towards the end of Meltdown, asking her if she would like to join him for a drink after work. I thought the colour of the wall looked familiar, and so I compared it to an image of The Lincoln I found on Google. Turns out, my theory was right! This scene was filmed here too!

It was the perfect timing to discover this as I was able to print out the unit still from Sarah Enticknapâs website to take with me to Melbourne. Like the others Iâve shared, I was also able to insert this photo into its actual location, and with an employeeâs laptop on the bench top, itâs a stark comparison that we have come a long way since 1986. The biggest piece of technology in this scene was the orange Telecom pay phone. The presence of this technological relic made my dad smile. He started working for Telecom in 1987, and we have many pieces of his Telecom tools and appliances at our place; such as a toolbox.

In an Emsolation Podcast episode from 2021 (âWe Is Shookâ), Michael Lucas shared with listeners that Rob starting his phone call to Noelene again in this scene, this time as himself rather than pretending to be a viewer called Daniel Davidson, was an addition to the script by Stephen Peacocke. It was the sweetest addition; it was very Rob-like and it sure made Noelene smile!
How lovely did it feel to really be in the spot that Rob and Stephen sat in 39 and 4 years ago, respectively. I couldnât help but look over my shoulder as I was enjoying my meal, wondering if Rob might still be there today đ That being said, Mum and I caught up with Stephen the next day at the Season Three ACMI premiere, so Robâs physical form was truly in Melbourne after all!
A massive thank you to The Lincoln once again for accomodating this Newsreader dream of mine! If youâre in Melbourne, make sure you pop in and see the place for yourself, and enjoy a cool drink whilst immersing yourself in Newsreader history â¤ď¸
#rob rickards#stephen peacocke#noelene kim#michelle lim davidson#the newsreader#the newsreader on location#the lincoln carlton#telecom#i am that thrilled that I got to properly visit this pub!#it felt so magical bringing season one to life!#my drink is a lemon lime and bitters btw!

A lot of shit's crossed my dash lately roughly in the form of "don't you dare not post about the Middle East because posting is explicitly what folks there are asking us to do right now".
On the one hand, part of solidarity, to me, is that when you're asked to do something easy by a group you're in solidarity with, you treat it like a structure test & you save the debate about "how effective is that actually" until later.
On the other hand, the way I remember it, that particular request went out during the telecom blackout, when folks in Gaza literally couldn't get the word out on their own, and that makes me think it was specific to that situation, not general marching orders for the duration of the war.
And on the gripping hand... if you're gonna broach a topic, it's gotta be in a way that matches your venue and your interlocutors, right? There's some folks who are on social media with an agenda of publishing, of building a following, of... speaking to an audience. That's gonna produce a very different kind of discussion than would come from someone like me, who's here to hang out with friends first, to rubber duck my way through thinking about things second, and to recreationally swap ideas with strangers third.
So I guess this is me rubber-ducking to myself about Gaza and wrapping my own head around the situation there.
...I tend to approach untangling stuff like this by looking at actions, and then going, "what could the intention have been here?"
And what I see over and over again here is behaviors that don't make any friggin' sense for any strategic goal other than "quench my anger in blood".
Like... okay. The hostages that Hamas took last month, yes that's a war crime, but at least it makes sense to me as to why it would serve some strategic purpose when you're up against an enemy that likes to make retaliatory strikes; after all, if you have hostages, maybe the Israeli army will be more hesitant to bomb places that the hostages might be. But the killing of noncombatant Israeli civilians that accompanied the kidnappings (also a war crime)? There's no strategic goal that's served by that. It doesn't advance any agenda, it doesn't put Hamas in a stronger position to demand concessions from the government of Israel, nor does it put the Israeli army in a weaker position to strike against Hamas. What was the point? It's completely unjustifiable.
But that single unjustifiable act pales in comparison to the war crimes being committed in retaliation for it: the last month of IDF operations, many of which make no sense for any strategic goal other than killing Palestinians, but are accomplishing that at an unprecedented scale. (Don't believe Hamas-run Gazan health orgs about how many civilians in Gaza have died? Then ask the hospitals! They published their own calculation of the death toll a couple weeks ago!) Flattening neighborhoods and destroying vital infrastructure because Hamas might have tunnels underneath? Telling people to flee south to "safe zones" and then bombing the safe zones? Blockading borders that aid might come in through & then bombing the only border crossing you don't control so people can't get in or out there either? (That's why the border with Egypt has been closed so often! The road keeps getting bombed!) What about the new economic sanctions on the West Bank, an area controlled by a completely different Palestinian government which considers itself Hamas's political rival/enemy?
How do you justify that? Even if you think the invasion of Gaza is "self defense", how does any of this other feverish destruction serve that purpose?
That's where it's easist to cut past rhetoric about "don't criticize how people fight for their lives". Because even if you believe in that standard, the logic stops working when the actions you're criticizing stop having any purpose in that fight.
So where does that leave us?
It leaves us with Hamas as murderers, and the IDF, in contrast, as unrepentant war criminals guilty at minimum of ethnic cleansing. (If you want to play the stupid and counterproductive game of asking whose sins are worse, here, of trying to apply math to right and wrong, the government of Israel are the group with more blood on their hands with less justification. To be clear. Because I know some readers of this will complain if I don't say that out loud.)
And what can I do with that information?
In practical terms, it's slim pickings.
The short list of boycott targets is so easy to cut out of my life that I was already doing it, and the extended list which the BNC didn't actually call for but which they're supporting at a lower priority because it happend to hit correct targets isn't that much harder. I already wrote to my congresscritters, and I've already got a list of relief charities (for when they can actually get supplies into the Strip). The folks who are messing with a cargo ship full of military aid to Israel are having an impact but that's stuff going on in port cities a thousand miles away from me, and anyway they're folks who're young enough that a night or two in jail for civil disobedience won't have collateral damage in the lives of people who depend on them.
So that leaves me sort of awkwardly twiddling my thumbs. Looking at all the Posting about "don't you dare not participate" with nothing in particular to do. This is the point I've tried to make before: that deciding to rumble into a political Topic is a cost/benefit analysis, and thus - no matter how urgent the need - can only be valuable if there's some benefit you can point to that'll be achieved by your participation. Otherwise it's all cost.
Supporting relief orgs is an uncomplicated thing to do in the meantime. Wheel-squeaking at my own government reps to try to push a ceasefire? Sure. Boycotts are easy mode, as I've previously discussed, and the list of corps that's clearly profiting from war crimes (as compared to simply "doing business with the government of Israel") is a short one anyway. But I can't help but feel like there needs to be some more fundamental shift or breakthrough before any of this will accomplish anything permanent.
Because, like... the stupidest part of this senseless horror is that everyone - even the guys with tanks and bombers - see themselves as the oppressed party, because the history that created a Westphalian state called "Israel" is that gentile European leaders wanted to solve a real problem (non-Jewish governments of places where Jews are a visible minority keep turning against them and using them as political scapegoats) and then did it in the worst way imaginable (appropriating land already inhabited by another ethnic/religious group, in the middle of a region infamous for religious wars, thereby putting everyone involved in permanent fight-or-die mode).
All this Agamemnon thinking, "no tears for their lives, no markers for their graves"... I worry that it's not going to end until either one side really is blotted out, or until people don't think their backs are against the wall. And the Palestinians' backs are, factually. That's what the blockade in Gaza has been: a wall against their backs. So that puts it on Israelis... but how do you approach people who were scared enough of living in Jewish-minority countries that they, or their parents/grandparents, moved to Israel in the first place, and convince them to abandon that fear? Making it "too scary" to live in Israel isn't gonna work; it'll just mean that everyplace is hostile, so mise well defend the place you actually live.
What does a win even look like, here?
I dunno.

Understanding Dividend Yield Stocks In The Utility Sector
Highlights:
Focus on dividend yield stocks within the utility sector known for consistent payouts.
Overview of companies offering stable dividend yields across various utility services.
Explanation of dividend yield metrics without forward-looking language.
The utility sector includes companies involved in electricity, water, natural gas, and renewable energy infrastructure. These firms typically operate with regulated pricing structures and long-term service agreements. Many entities in this sector are known for offering regular dividend payments, often sought for their historical consistency. Among these, dividend yield stocks are widely monitored for the rate of return paid out relative to share price.
Electric Power Companies and Dividend Stability
Electric power providers often distribute a portion of their earnings through dividends. These firms operate essential infrastructure that supports everyday power consumption across residential and commercial zones. Companies within this segment regularly report consistent financial performance due to steady energy demand. Dividend yield is generally calculated by dividing the annual dividend by the stock's market price, providing a percentage-based figure used for comparison.
Water Utility Providers and Yield Trends
Water utilities manage the treatment and distribution of water for public and private use. These services are typically monopolistic within their regions, subject to oversight and regulation. Entities in this segment often use long-term capital planning strategies and allocate funds toward infrastructure upgrades. Dividend yield data is available through financial reports and can differ based on pricing structures and service areas.
Natural Gas Distributors with Dividend Track Records
Natural gas distribution companies offer services that include the transport and sale of gas to residential, industrial, and commercial users. Many of these companies have longstanding records of issuing dividends. Dividend yield may reflect the relationship between current distribution rates and the company's market valuation, often influenced by seasonal usage and cost pass-through mechanisms.
Renewable Energy Utilities and Income Distribution
Renewable energy firms focused on solar, wind, and hydroelectric power have entered the utility landscape. While traditionally associated with growth-oriented activities, some have implemented dividend frameworks based on cash flow from long-term energy purchase agreements. The dividend yield associated with these companies can fluctuate based on contract stability and energy output metrics, but their inclusion in the broader utility dividend landscape continues to expand.
Telecom-Utility Hybrids and Dividend Yield Insights
Some utility firms operate in crossover areas, including telecommunications. These companies manage infrastructure for internet, phone, and cable alongside energy-related assets. Their dividend practices are often aligned with long-term service contracts and infrastructure-based revenue streams. The yield figure for such firms can be used to gauge income distribution relative to share valuation in non-energy-specific operations.
