Improving Android Text Message Archiving: Top Tools and Strategies
Introduction:
In the contemporary digital landscape, smartphones serve as crucial repositories for cherished memories, important data, and essential business communications. Therefore, having efficient methods for text message archive android is vital for ensuring secure storage and easy access. This guide outlines effective tools and strategies to assist Android users in archiving their text messages, providing a dependable way to protect and recover important conversations.
Utilizing Built-In Archiving Features:
Android devices offer basic archiving options within their native messaging applications, which are adequate for users with moderate archiving needs. These built-in features allow users to archive messages directly within the app. However, those who need more comprehensive archiving solutions—such as managing large volumes of messages or simplifying retrieval—may find these native options insufficient. To fulfill these requirements, various third-party apps designed for Android text message archiving are available.
Popular Text Message Archiving Applications:
Highly rated apps like SMS Backup & Restore, SMS Backup+, and Phone Leash provide enhanced archiving capabilities. These tools allow users to back up their messages to email accounts or cloud services, thereby increasing the security and accessibility of their archived conversations.
Streamlining the Archiving Process:
To effectively archive Android text messages, it’s crucial to choose the right application. Once installed, users can tailor their archiving settings, select specific messages for backup, enable automatic backups, and determine the preferred storage location for their archives.
Emphasizing Security and Privacy:
When choosing a text message archiving app, prioritizing privacy and data security is key. It's advisable to select apps that have positive user reviews and transparent privacy policies to safeguard sensitive information.
Conclusion:
By implementing effective strategies and utilizing the appropriate tools, archiving Android text messages becomes a straightforward and advantageous task. A robust archiving system not only secures vital communications but also gives users peace of mind and easy access to their digital conversations.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I am happy to announce I just saved a Kabaret Sybarit (my favorite band) song from being lost media!!! NOT ONLY THAT BUT ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND COMMENTED ON MY VIDEO!!!
youtube
Below is the full story:
Let me start from the beginning. 2 days ago I was trying to find the lyrics of the Bloodshed and Bones song online but I quickly got sidetracked by this weird sketchy site to download music (I think the name was Rilds? Relds? idk). Now when I usually download music I use emp3juice (Yes that's the websites name) and convert to mp3 but Google just RANDOMLY decided to give me lost media on a silver platter.
You see the page that Rilds got for Kabaret Sybarit had a few songs of theirs... and also one that belongs from a lost EP of the band (Well, *kinda* lost, because the band has uploaded one of the tracks onto the YouTube they got and also Discogs has the full tracklist) Now if I am aware the song was only uploaded two times before on YT, one instance is a recording from a live show that sounds like those 2018 earrape memes from Soundcloud and thus is very low quality, the other is uh... an interesting speed paint to say the least (if you want to see for yourself search the song's name) with the song in the background. But I... I had a PURE. CONDENSED. SEPARATE AUDIO FILE. I hit the jackpot.
Okay I'm starting to see this is getting very long so uhm INSERT THAT ONE CLIP OF MARKIPLIER JINGLING A PAIR OF KEYS IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA AND SAYING "JINGLE JANGLE" alright now that I extended your attention span length I can continue
I quickly decided that this little dust covered gem must shine once more because, y'know, it was close to being absolutely forgotten (but also because I needed to complete my KABARET SYBARIT ULTIMATE PLAYLIST *Yes I actually named it like that, don't ask why* on YT Music) so I quickly went to TunesToTube.com and pressed that DAMN upload button faster than the speed of light.
The next day, I opened up my Android and what do I see? A YouTube notification. With a comment. On MY OWN VIDEO. This never actually happens because the only time I get a notification about that sort of thing is when another Save Europe kid comments on that one very funny "ragebait" (I wouldn't even call it ragebait but it got some steam heads fuming) I posted onto a nightcore video... but that's a story for another day.
But back to the topic. I opened the notification. It's Mathias Bjørnskov. The composer of the band. The guy that currently runs the Kabaret Sybarit on YouTube. He asks if I have any other songs from The EP and says he got the physical version of the EP from a fan but has no ways to play it. I, of course, reply with a LENGTHY message like I always do (and I feel that makes me look like I haven't seen the sunlight in 23 years but oh well). I won't transcribe it here because for 1. It would be cringe 2. I already linked the video in the post so you can check it yourself (and get cringed too!).
Now, if anything else happens, I will post on my blog. If not (virtually impossible but still), then uhhh the Kabaret Sybarit arc of my life is complete move on with a sad song in the background as you walk in the opposite direction of the street or something I'm not good at that.
But I would also like to reach out to whoever has had the patience to read the entirety of this text wall. Do not let your passions and interests get forgotten, because there is a chance others won't be able to experience it themselves. Media archiving is IMPORTANT. Without it some of the things you love would not even exist currently. So if you see a strange video, picture, song or text somewhere on the Internet... don't think it's accidental. Nothing is. Okay MAYBE if it's something illegal you should let it be (but it varies ofc)
So, yeah... For now that's all. See you!
#kabaret sybarit#lost media#this is what happens when my favorite band becomes an obsession#i am genuinely sooo happy rn#dark cabaret#Youtube

I usually do not recommend apps because I hate things that look like advertisements, but I recently took a long journey down the road of "I want to backup an SMS conversation with tens of thousands of messages" and ran into so many roadblocks and pitfalls that I wanted to share the only thing that seems to have worked. I am also sort of hoping that people with more Android chops will say something like "oh you missed officially-supported option XYZ" or something like that.
1. Google will backup your SMS but unless you pay for Google One, your MMS will be lost—so all the photos etc in the thread are gone.
2. Moreover what is in Google One will not be downloadable into a format that you control. The only option is to port to a new phone.
3. Moreover even if you use Google Takeout to try to download that archive from Google One, the result is busted and doesn't include said media.
4. Many of the other apps have a "free trial" that is so hampered that you cannot actually make a single archive.
5. The app I found will export a massive XML file to one of several filesharing services—Google Drive, Dropbox, and Onedrive—as well as a local backup that can presumably be ported over USB. The app has an associated web viewer, which has problems with loading all the videos and pictures in a long text chain, presumably because it is trying to cram the entire thing into the DOM. If you unselect loading those, you can "click to load" them afterwards, and this works, although it can cause the scrolling to get lost.
6. However, the fact that it's an XML file means you can do SAX parsing of it, even though there could be 100MB videos in the "data" attribute of some of the tags (!). I've already been experimenting with doing that—written a little parser that sends everything to an SQLite3 database.
7. The format of the dump seems to be. "smses" is the root tag pair, and within it are tags of type "sms" and "mms". "mms" can contain two children, "parts" and "addrs". A "parts" tag can contain multiple "part"s which contain the "meat" including the "data" attributes, which seems to be where all my pics and videos have gone. An "addrs" tag contains "addr"s that seem to be just participating conversationalists. There's a hell of a lot of metadata stored in the attributes, not all of which I have deciphered beyond the datatype of each field.
8. I think I want to actually do the whole SQLite3 song-and-dance and just dump pictures and videos to some static folders. Then you could write a small local webserver to deliver a properly scrollable and searchable version. But right now, having a backup that I can save to a USB or several is really comforting.

BatB Week podfic instructions and tips
Thanks to everyone who signed up for the podfic exchange! If you signed up as a reader, you should have gotten a message with info on who you matched with. Send a DM if you missed the message.
(If you didn’t sign up, there is still time! We still need one more podficcer! The form to sign up is here.)
I don’t personally do voice/audio work, but I’ve pulled together some quick tips and instructions for recording, editing, and posting podfics below the cut. If someone else has better/more suggestions, please add on!
Recording and editing
Need audio recording/editing software? You don't need anything fancy; you can record it on whatever voice recording software comes installed on your phone (I have Samsung Voice Recorder, for instance), or use one of these free, beginner-friendly audio editors: Lexis Audio Editor (Android, iOS, Windows), Audacity (Windows, Mac, Linux), GarageBand (Mac), Audiotool (online).
Nastasia Marquez has a great tutorial on how to record and edit voiceovers for beginners in Audacity. It's very easy to follow along and gets straight to the point.
When recording, watch out for plosives and sibilances (e.g. your "pps," "sss," and "shh") as they can easily hinder the quality of your recording by being aggressive to the ear. It’s hard to give tips since everyone will be working with different devices, but my suggestion would be to put some space between your mouth and the microphone, or have your device inside a sock. You can learn more on them and how to deal with them here.
A good way to get clean audio is to record under a blanket. It’s silly, but it’s as close to a padded studio as you can get for free. It reduces echo and makes the audio sound much better no matter the mic you use.
Don't be afraid to record in short batches! There’s no need to do it in long unbroken takes. Piece it together later.
Posting the audio file
Once you have your finished audio file, you have to upload it somewhere, because AO3 can host the link to it, but not the audio file itself. It seems like Internet Archive is popular for hosting podfic audio files. You can also host it on Google Drive, YouTube, Mediafire, or Spotify.
Posting the podfic to AO3
Go to ‘Post > New work’ just like you would for posting any fic to AO3.
In the ‘Post to Collections / Challenges’ field, enter “beauty_beast_week_2025” (see first screenshot below).
Check the box that reads ‘This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work’ and include the URL to the original fic (see first screenshot below). This not only gives credit to and notifies the author, but it adds a link to your podfic from their fic (when they approve it) so that your podfic gets more hits and kudos.
In the body of the post, insert the HTML to embed the audio file (see second screenshot below). It’s easy: AO3 has a simple guide to copy and paste from here.
If you’d like, you can add more content to the body of the post, like the event banner or some text, but it’s not necessary.
Here are some examples of BatB podfics so you can see how they’ve set things up: The Great Wide Somewhere, Mutual Care, and The Beast Within
Posting to the event
Important: tag the @beauty-beast-week account within the body of your Tumblr post itself by typing the @ symbol, typing beauty-beast-week, and then selecting that account name from the autocomplete menu that appears. This is the only way to be sure we see your post so we can reblog it from this account and include it in our master list posts.
Other than that, make sure you post to Tumblr on the day of the prompt you're using and include in your post:
Tag the @beauty-beast-week account within the body of the post (yes, I’m repeating myself)
Which fic your podfic is for, and link to it
Which day/prompt your podfic is for, in the body or tags
The event hashtag #batbweek and/or #batbweek 2025
Any other appropriate hashtags (characters, ship, NSFW and content warnings)
Optional: The event banner (save from the top of this post) or the day's banner (in the full event instructions that will come later)
Heads up authors! Check your AO3 email during the event!
If your work was adapted into a podfic for the exchange, check your email and follow the link to approve linking back the podfic to your original work so more people can discover the podfic version!

Send an ask or DM if you have any problems or questions!

reposting from r/romancebooks
Alt Text: r/Kindle post that states: FYI Amazon is removing Download and Transfer option on February 26. I went to download a book this morning and saw the following warning: Starting February 26, 2025, the "Download & Transfer via USB" option will no longer be available. You can still send Kindle books to your Wi-Fi enabled devices by selecting the "Deliver or Remove from Device" option. This post contains a screenshot of the warning.
u/Magnafeana's attached FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is “Download & Transfer via USB”? This is a website option to permit users to download their Amazon content library purchases directly to their PCs. This is a way to keep versions of your purchases in your own storage. This does not mean that the file is deDRM. The file remains AZW3 DRM locked.
Does this affect all kindles? This pertains to the website itself.
Will this affect other methods of Send to Kindle? No. You can still use other methods to send documents, PDFs, and EPUBs to your Kindle device either manually or via Calibre.
Why don’t I see this yet when I try this option? It seems there’s a mixed bag of people who get this message and don’t. I personally don’t. But I have verified with representatives and their team leads twice that this change will happen universally on February 26.
How can I back up my books? r/Calibre is a great resource itself that walks you through how to back up your books and read them elsewhere.
This makes me concerned about purchasing from Amazon. Are there any other options? Many
u/Magnafeana's resource list under the cut
I shared my resources here and here, but here’s a list: I always advocate for DRM-free media. I shared here some non-Amazon options (Abe Books is owned by Amazon BTW): Apple Books Rakuten Kobo (Kobo lets you use Adobe Digital Edition DRMs, which come as epubs) SmashWords itch.io Humble Bumble Eden Books Libby Barnes & Noble Nook (though I believe this contain DRM as well and, similar to this, you can no longer download Nook ebooks to your PC directly) BookFunnel Author directly (sometimes, you can purchase DRM-free ebooks from them or they gift it to you) Project Gutenberg (public domain) Internet Archive RoyalRoad (webnovels) Tapas (webnovels) Google Play Books ebooks.com Bookshops.com (however, there’s some controversy that, while this’ll partner with Kobo eventually, DRM Ebooks from Bookshop.org must be read on either their Apple or Android app, and this is in the US currently, but this thread on r/books talks about it more) Harlequin DL Site (Japanese media) J-Novel Club (Japanese) BOOK⭐️WALKER (Japanese) BookLive (Japanese) Honto (Japanese) I’m missing out on multiple retailers for Asian content, but so many of them are largely physical books rather than ebooks 😭 r/FreeRomanceBooks is also a great place to check out free books that may be available on non-Amazon platforms r/MM_RomanceBooks has daily release posts that include Sales & Deals that may be from non-Amazon websites as well as dedicated posts for sales & deals and stuff your ereader days that can have books beyond the Amazon ecosystem r/Fantasy is great at calling out humble bumble deals for fantasy books, where they are all ePUBS r/audiobooks has a great resources for options Some of my sources do encompass audiobooks, but there’s also: Hoopla GraphicAudio Kobo Audiobooks Libro.fm (DRM-free, IIRC) Google Play Audiobooks Humble Bumble Internet Archive Blogs (some audiodramas/audiobooks are hosted on the actual webnovel page) Teen Book Cloud Librovox (public domain) Just an FYI ☺️ But I will echo what I say in my other comments: KU is still a great subscription and Amazon does provide a lot of books. Amazon puts exclusivity for some authors as well, so remaining with Amazon isn’t a bad thing. If you can afford to shop elsewhere for ebooks or your library hosts the books you like, go for it! I certainly get things from Libby and other sites, but there’s a lot of books solely available through Amazon and that’ll be the only way to support the author. Do what’s affordable and accessible to you.

okay i had this whole thing wrong, i thought the Machine Lifeform rocket from the end of Automata just somehow wound up in the FFXIV universe and crash-landed on the First
actually playing the Dark Apocalypse raids and reading through flavour text i can say with reasonable certainty that that ain't what happened
the ship buried beneath the recreation of the Bunker is explicitly labeled as the Alien Ship, suggesting it's a recreation of the Alien Ship that was buried under the city in Automata
we're never really given a timeline for how long any of these recreated locations (the ship, the bunker or the factory) have been there, however it's implied to have been really recent (especially as the Machine Lifeform tech can build incredibly quickly, as we saw with the Tower in Automata) and the Seed of Destruction is the core of all this
Konogg found it after a landslide killed Anogg, just at the bottom of an underground chasm, but by the present it's within that buried Alien Ship. we also know it's not a real Seed of Destruction - yes it looks like one, same texture, Angelic script appearing on it when it activates, but a) the Angelic script appears more as a screen projection that glowing inscriptions like in Drakengard and b) i read ahead at Konogg's messages post-final raid in the Portable Archive, and those reveal that the purpose of the 'white spheres' is to duplicate Machine Lifeforms for invasion of other worlds (and 2B and 9S backed up their consciousnesses into them to try and prevent this)
so the Seed was shot out into the multiverse and happened to arrive on the First, lying dormant until Konogg found it and accidentally activated it, recreating Anogg from his memories before going to work, recreating both machine lifeforms and android data (as well as systems and the data stored on them, like 21O's backup consciousness)
the Seeds looking almost identical to the real Seeds of Destruction from Drakengard is a little odd, but the NieR timeline shows that the androids of Earth have some measure of understanding of the world that the Red Dragon (Angelus) and the White Giant (the Grotesquerie Queen) came from (and Accord's organisation has a comprehensive record given their time traveling), so it wouldn't be unsurprising that the Machine network somehow got hold of this information and based these spheres off the Seeds (and given that the Logic Virus is implied to be an extension of the Red Eyes that would infect humans, that this ultimately leads to a Grotesquerie being born isn't unsurprising, the Watchers just exerting their will through new means)
this does of course raise a few questions. 1) what timeline does this happen in? an alternate branch to the main Automata, which would explain why 2B still thinks Command is active if her copied data comes from a timeline where this happened pre-End of YoRHa? or was the copied consciousness data into the spheres from earlier backups because 2B and 9S were unable or didn't have the time to prepare up-to-date backups in a post-End of YoRHa world? and 2) what other universes did these Seeds get sent to, and how badly did it end for them?

Hiii I’d like to request a love letter from the Riddler pretty please. My OC is like a robot/android made by Lex Luthor that gained human consciousness. She’s like super insecure because she looks human but she knows she’s not real.
"Physical Record" Riddler x f!reader (Valentine's Day Event)
NGL, I've been excited for this one because wow what a concept. You're really going full-in on the OC and I love that for you. This ask is for the ongoing Valentine's Day Event!
TW: None
The letter was a strange thing to find on the dining room table of your shared home. He easily could have sent an email or a text message and you would have gotten it instantly. Yet here it was, a envelope with your name written on the outside. If you look to the side, you notice there are multiple paper scraps thrown in the trash. Letters that didn't make the cut. This was important.
To my Galatea,
We spoke of many things recently- the nature of humanity. The creation of your robotics chips, your synthetic synapses and electrical wiring. How it relates to what makes you physically. It is merely a segment of what makes your being.
We both know the half-life of the digital world. The erasure of internet records at the whim of a server wipe-out. Computer programs that become outdated and archives lost. Despite my own fondness for it all, I recognize that it's the physical that remains within the confines of museums. And so, I leave you with a physical record of my feelings.
One day, when I am long gone, and your components no longer run, I hope that this letter will remain. When the historians look upon us and wonder what we were to each other- let them know that I love you. I want them to know that you are a person, as real as I am.
Even as I peel away your plates for maintenance, and replace the coolant and antifreeze inside of your body, I see you. Our minds exist beyond the barriers of flesh and metal to something deeper. A soul? I'm not quite sure, but if anyone had such a thing, it would be you.
You are more human than any person I know. I think we should make letters our new "thing." Let them serve as echoes of us beyond the limits of our own time. Physical. Frail. Human.
In aeternum te amabo,
Edward Nygma

Pairing: RK900/Gavin Reed
Tags: Post Pacifist Ending, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Eventual Smut, Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Masterlist
Read on AO3 here:
Summary: A lot has changed since the revolution. Crimes against androids are now punished in the same way as crimes against humans. A reluctant Gavin Reed and his new partner RK900 have been assigned to investigate a string of disturbing murders. Despite the shift in Detroit's social climate, Gavin still holds reservations about whether or not androids are truly alive. Will his developing feelings for 'Nines' be the thing to change this?
Warnings: Graphic Violence, Depression/Self Destructive Behaviour, Eventual Smut
Word Count: 3.9K
Gavin woke up to the sound of his neighbour screaming outside. Judging by the shrill tones, it was a woman desperately trying to herd her children off to a dance class. They were late, as she laboured repeatedly, much to the vocal chagrin of her spawn. He groaned, grabbing his pillow and clutching it over his head.
A chorus of low hums came from the side of his bed, and Gavin craned himself over to find the source. It was his phone, half concealed under a pile of clothes. Making a concerted effort not to tip over, he deftly retrieved the device. The exertion caused his jeans to tense, which made him painfully aware that he was still dressed from the night before.
After wiping a film of sweat from his brow, he fumbled dozily with the screen, struggling with the passcode. The fact it had gone off at all meant it was charged - which was fortunate. Less fortunate was the news that illuminated his screen.
It was 11:43am.
Gavin shot up but immediately regretted it - as a sudden wave of nausea hit him. With his head flopped on the pillow, he attempted to steel himself with a long, laboured breath. The man recalled very little of the night before, but if his queasy delirium was anything to go by, he'd certainly had a good time. As such, he tried not to dwell on the guilt of missing yet another morning run. Or failing to feed his cat at a reasonable hour.
With the screaming match outside complete, Gavin allowed his wrist to go limp, and his phone dropped to his chest with a dull thud. He entertained the idea of trying to sleep just a bit longer. At least until the worst of his dizziness had subsided.
A new notification sent unpleasant vibrations shooting through his sternum. He tried to ignore the wayward shake, but the sensations kept coming. Glowering at the offending device, he frustratedly turned it over and found a new series of messages that had joined the procession of unread notifications:
Actually Decent (9)
[11:45 am] Gav
[11:45 am] hellooooo
[11:45 am] u alive?
[11:46 am] text me back
After another shaky attempt, the man succeeded in unlocking his phone. While he'd intended on responding to Tina, if only to appease her demand, he was promptly derailed. He stared frozen at the screen as his heart pumped ferociously.
Robo Prick
[2:55am] u have a nice smile. and a nice ass.
He didn't read anything else, with his eyes focused despairingly on that one damning passage. Mortified beyond belief, he began to rack his brain on how to salvage the situation. Perhaps he could convince the android that it had been a joke. Or claim that the message had been intended for someone else -
Like Hell. Who else could it have been for?
Holding his breath, he prepared himself for some requisite damage control. That was when he noticed the word at the beginning of the message. One that single-handedly preserved his dignity:
(Draft)
"Thank fuck”, Gavin whispered, releasing the breath that he had been holding. He feverishly deleted the message before it could yield any consequence.
With the desire to release his mounting tension (and to expunge the sweat soaking his clothes), Gavin concluded it was time for a shower. Phone in hand, he hoisted himself from his bed and plodded his way out of the bedroom. Tiffany, who had been resting on the sofa, glared at his intrusion. She sprung herself from the cushions and haughtily marched to the kitchen. A series of long, demanding yowls followed.
"Cool your tits…" He pleaded, holding his head "I'll feed ya soon. Promise."
Securing himself in his bathroom, the man stripped himself of his clothes, to which a pungent odour abruptly followed. It was the penultimate blend of poor life choices. A mixture of booze, sweat and cigarettes. Leaning over his bath to adjust the faucet, a lukewarm flow trickled pitifully from the fixture above. Slipping from his boxers, he was about to climb in when a vibration rattled the sink.
He groaned. It was probably Tina again.
Sitting on the edge of the bathtub, Gavin scrolled through his notifications. He did owe his friend some form of response. After all, if it wasn't for her, he probably would have spent the night in a bush.
Actually Decent
You:
still alive
didnt choke on my puke
thanks
It wasn't until Gavin replied that he realised the most recent notification had not, in fact, been from Tina. There was a newcomer to his inbox, and given the near miss earlier, it was probably the last person he wanted to hear from:
Robo-Prick
[11:57 am] Detective Reed. I have made a breakthrough in the case. Please let me know when you have received this message so we can discuss things further - Model RK900, Serial Number 313 248 317 – 87.
Gavin grimaced at the needless formality, setting the phone back on the sink without any intention of replying. That was until another, more pressing, message popped up on the thread.
Robo-Prick (2)
[11:58 am] I would like to meet in person to discuss this, should you be available. Please let me know - Model RK900, Serial Number 313 248 317 – 87.
"Son of a bitch”, He cursed under his breath, realising that Nines was not about to let this go.
You:
its my day off nines. cant it wait until monday?
also you don't need to sign your messages. i know who you are, jackass.
Robo-Prick:
You will want to hear this. I assure you, I won't take up much of your time.
I am messaging you from my internal hub. I will try deactivating the signature, but I cannot guarantee success.
You:
those last two messages didnt have signatures.
you know what you're doing. stop fucking with me.
Robo-Prick: It would appear I have succeeded. How fortunate.
Gavin slammed the phone down, in no mood to indulge his partner further. He had gotten his message across, and that was more than enough.
Retrieving a nearby bottle of shower gel, he finally moved into the shower. Lathering himself from head to toe, he allowed the water to do the rest. As bubbles and suds trickled from his skin, he was lulled by the soft dripping of water - to which he closed his eyes. Not ready to face the burden of his neglected responsibilities, Gavin stood there, enjoying the peace, until the water turned cold.
Turning off the faucet and leaving the bath, he grabbed a towel from a nearby rack and patted himself dry. Towel slung loosely around his waist, He moved to the next pitstop in his hungover journey.
In the kitchen, Tiffany was sat by her food bowl, glaring into it apprehensively. Gavin opened the cat food cupboard and was struck by another unpleasant violent headrush. The pain and dizziness overwhelmed him as he struggled to maintain stability.
"Goddammit."
Gavin closed his eyes, desperate to quell the unpleasant rocking. The cat food was forgotten, his mind preoccupied with a new, more pressing objective. Finding some painkillers. Shambling his way through his cabinets, he grappled with a myriad of cans and noodle packets - but failed to find his desired relief. Grunting frustratedly, he leant his head against the cabinet door, hoping the action may alleviate some pressure from his aching skull.
Not helping matters was the sound of light but incessant tapping on his kitchen window.
He reasoned it must be pigeons. They could often be found skulking around on the building's fire escape. Just as he was about to shoo them away, his eyes caught a glimpse of something else. A tall, looming figure on his balcony. Staring in with piercing grey eyes.
"What the fuck -" the detective yelped, reaching instinctively for a gun that wasn't holstered. With footing lost, he tumbled backwards and was stopped by the fold-out table propped against the wall. As he came down from the sudden shock of adrenaline, his eyes started to focus on his would-be intruder. As the features came together, he felt relief - as well as a strong sense of resentment.
Nines tapped the glass once again before gesturing to the balcony door. Its lips were moving, but no words could be heard through the thick glazing of the windows. With flustered exacerbation, Gavin pushed himself away from his plastic support. Unlocking the balcony door, he violently swung it open.
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
"Good afternoon, Detective", Nines responded with flawless composure. It maintained an invasive level of eye contact - much to Gavin's visible displeasure - when its gaze began to trail downwards. Its lip twitched, and its expression shifted between intrigue and amusement. "You are looking well."
"No, seriously, what are you doing?" Gavin repeated. The cold breeze outside assaulted his skin, and he tried to ward off his shivers with a gentle shuffle of his feet. "If this is about work, I swear to god, I'm pushing you off this building. Because I already said no. I don't want to hear it."
"I never received a 'no'", Nines corrected. "You asked if it could wait until Monday. I concluded that it could not - and informed you as such. Did you not receive my message?"
"I stopped reading your messages, dipshit. They were pissing me off -
Why didn't you knock on my door? Instead of scaling the fire escape like a goddamn lunatic?"
"I tried the door, but you were not answering."
"I was in the fucking shower." The detective leant against the doorframe, exhaling heavily. "You could have waited a minute."
"I waited several minutes", Nines retorted, calmly straightening its back. "Nonetheless, now that I am here, you may as well let me inside."
"Are you -" Gavin cut himself off, sighing frustratedly. "Another Human Tip: You can't just show up at somebody's house without their permission. For all you know, I might have been busy. Like, I dunno, cranking one out. You really want to walk in on that?"
Nines looked on with a blank expression, to which Gavin immediately regretted his words. Of course, it would be incapable of grappling with such a fundamentally 'human' concept. He was doubtful the machine had ever experienced anything akin to lust or desire, let alone the need for release -
"I am perfectly aware of human fondness for self-stimulation" The android looked him up and down again before subtly tilting its head. "Truthfully, there are less appealing things I can think of seeing."
It was Gavin's turn to stall.
Of Nines' various tricks and skills, catching him by surprise was undoubtedly one of them . If it wasn't for the quintessentially 'robotic' way with which it had phrased the statement, he might have mistaken the words for some surreal attempt at flirting.
While it sought to portray an air of disinterest, there was something akin to a self-aware glimmer in Nines' eyes. Like it knew precisely what it was doing. As the detective had effectively admitted to his own pent-up sexual frustrations, he could only assume that his partner was now seeking to exploit this. Yet another excuse to exert 'superiority'.
"I'll let you in -" Gavin began, readjusting his towel in hidden embarrassment "- but only because I don't want my neighbours to think I'm being robbed."
With a palpable lack of enthusiasm, he led Nines into his home. It settled itself on a nearby chair, waiting patiently. Tiffany grew increasingly vocal in her demands to be fed, and Gavin was ready to comply. He returned to the counter, tearing the corner of the abandoned food pouch and immediately heaved at the putrid smell.
"Are you alright, Detective?" Nines asked, observing from the sidelines.
"Fuck off."
"I would be happy to offer my assistance."
"I said fuck off ", He set Tiffany's food bowl on the side, grimacing as he attempted to squeeze the contents from the pouch. The texture stopped him as he heaved again, more violently, and dropped the packaging onto the counter.
At this point, Tiffany had lost patience, deciding to stroll around the kitchen. Gavin knew that one of her favourite spots was under the folded table. Where Nines was currently sitting. The flick of a tail caught his attention, and he turned around to see his partner staring intently. Its hands remained balled into fists until a couple of fingers started to release. Extending down, the android attempted to brush the top of her fur.
"Don't", Gavin warned. "I've already told you. If you touch her, she'll -"
A hand ran across Tiffany's back, and she let out a rumbling purr. No bites or scratches were exchanged, nor was Thirium shed on the kitchen floor. Both feline and machine looked equally pleased, while Gavin was caught between utter bewilderment and betrayal.
You fluffy traitor.
Nines looked up, smiling gently. "It would appear your cat likes me, Detective Reed."
We'll see about that.
After successfully depositing the food, Gavin set the bowl on the floor, and Tiffany quickly noticed. With perked eyes, she deserted her new friend without hesitation. He couldn't help but chuckle at how the Nines' expression immediately withered.
"That's cats for you," He said, offering a shrug of commiseration. "Fickle bastards."
With his task complete, the man was keen to take a rest. Even if 'rest' meant sitting with Nines and listening to its stilted ramblings. He was about to do so when his headache halted him once again. His vision lost focus and filled with spots as he clung to the counter's edge. The pain had grown impossible to ignore, and his nausea had only worsened. Feeling sorry for himself, he leant over his sink and groaned.
"You appear to be in physical distress", Nines said. "Are you in pain?"
"I'm hungover, dipshit."
Nines nodded its head, showing that it understood, before gesturing to the cabinet above the bedraggled man. "Painkillers are on the top shelf. Behind the mugs."
Gavin shot it a disparaging look. Having found nothing on the shelf above, he could only assume that the android enjoyed watching him struggle. "You got x-ray vision?"
"Not as such. It is a simple observation."
Despite reservations, Gavin was reaching a physical breaking point. He would do just about anything to quell the pressure in his head. Even if it meant complying with his know-it-all work partner.
As he moved the mugs aside, he was greeted with one of his all-time favourites. It was adorned in smileys, with 'No. 1 Cat Mom' written in bold, blocky letters. It had been a gift from Tina, made during a pottery class. While the handle was lopsided and the paint was splotched, Gavin appreciated it greatly. Although he would deny this if questioned.
The painkillers were tucked away in the left-hand corner of the shelf, just as Nines promised. Convinced that the bottle had not been visible from its current position, he shot it an accusing look. "How did you know this was here?"
"I noticed it earlier when you were searching your cabinets. I'm surprised you didn't as well."
"Oh, what, when you were creeping through my window?" Gavin removed the cap from the painkillers and poured himself a glass of water. "Didn't think 'Peeping Tom' was one of your features."
Nines did not appreciate the suggestion. Its eyes darted away defensively, and its complexion darkened, tinged with blue. "Please do not flatter yourself. I would have liked to have made my presence known sooner, but I was determining the most opportune time. I did not wish to scare you."
"Well, that was a bust - because you scared the shit out of me."
Its LED started to blink, flickering red before returning to normal. "I apologise."
At that moment, Gavin saw something deeply resemblant to the android's predecessor. Unlike Connor, however, the sharpness of Nines' features did not lend themselves well to sympathetic softness. Its eyes were too intense to be large or pleading, and its jaw remained tensed in hidden defiance.
"Sorry, Nines, but the 'kicked puppy' look really doesn't work for you", He quipped, rolling his eyes. "Give it a rest. You look constipated."
Nines' expression returned to normal, betraying no hint of the vulnerability it had shown just seconds prior.
"Look, as disappointing as this might be, towel time is over. I'm freezing my balls off" Gavin rubbed his hands, struggling with the chill that had lingered from the opened balcony. "While I'm gone, don't touch anything. Including my cat. Got it?"
Ultimately, Gavin was forced to leave Nines unattended longer than desired. It was a challenge to find anything resembling clean clothes in the steaming trash heap he called his bedroom. In the end, a 'sniff test' guided him through, and he dressed himself in lounge shorts and a faded t-shirt. The sooner he got Nines out of his apartment, the sooner he could do something productive - like laundry.
As he returned to the kitchen, there was a strong, earthy aroma wafting from the doorway. Clearly, Nines had decided to ignore his simple request. Gavin stomped into the room with a deep scowl marring his features. "What part of 'don't touch anything' did you not understand?"
Nines looked up from his coffee machine with a steaming mug in hand. "I realise that my intrusion today was somewhat callous. Given your fondness for caffeinated drinks, I thought making one would show appreciation for how you didn't turn me away."
Gavin groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. He was really starting to struggle with his partner's constant mood swings. "Last week, you would have fed me to lions if it got you a lead, and now you're making me coffee. Has Connor been giving you more of your kiss-ass lessons?"
"...While I was bestowed with improved skills in deduction and combat, RK800 possesses a more advanced social protocol. I have made it clear that I have no interest in adjusting my behaviour. Nonetheless, he has provided some…guidance on how I may improve my working relationships."
While keeping his guard up, Gavin accepted the android's peace offering. Receiving the mug, he secretly indulged in its inviting heat and smell. "Provided this coffee doesn't taste like shit, you can tell him they're working."
They sat together at the table, and Gavin propped his elbow up, resting his head on his palm. "You've kept me in suspense long enough. So, what was this massive breakthrough that couldn't wait until tomorrow morning?"
Nines perked up, seeming pleased that its partner was no longer stalling things. Reaching into its CyberLife jacket, it pulled out a folded piece of paper and set it on the table. It had started to speak before the detective could ask what it was. "Do you recall when I scanned Mr Scott's phone? Back at the electronics store?"
Gavin snorted, fondly recalling the mortified look on Mikey's large, pug-like face. "I remember that you caught him watching porn."
"I wouldn't have said that the material had constituted pornography. It appeared to be a compilation video of women in bikinis - this was not the only thing I discovered." Nines tapped the paper's surface, inviting his partner to take a look. "My scan revealed that Mr Scott had been engaging in several concerning online activities. I have since done some further research and printed a screenshot for reference."
Unfurling the paper, Gavin wasn't entirely sure what to expect. However, he was almost disappointed when he was finally about to take a look. It seemed pretty tame. A text-based message board spouting aggressive anti-android sentiments. While littered with slurs and grammatical errors, the vast sum of the posts could be surmised as rehashes of the same tired arguments. How androids were the downfall of society and needed to be destroyed.
"Look, I'm not saying this stuff is nice, Nines - but it really isn't that bad." Gavin looked up from the paper, raising his eyebrows. "Besides, what's it got to do with the case?"
Nines met his doubt with stern insistence, motioning its hand, "Turn the page."
Gavin did as instructed - and then, he saw it. A profoundly disturbing and sinister twist to an otherwise innocuous forum thread. There were dozens of photos of dismantled - or otherwise mutilated - androids. He recognised many images from their own criminal database. Some were photos that had been released to the press, while others were not.
Unsurprisingly, the responses to these images were gleefully morbid. Celebrating the senseless brutality of the acts that had been committed.
** [NSFW] Robot slut gets skull bashed in with a brick**
> lol. serves it right. plastic whore.
>> This one is pretty good, but it would be better if you could see its face. I love it when they cry.
>>> Very nice. Saving this for later.
The comments only got worse, devolving into increasingly violent and sexual depravity. It left a bitter taste in Gavin's mouth, and he had to stop reading.
"This one is ours. The MJ100."
"They're all ours, Detective", Nines said gravely. "The HR400 is featured too, as well as all other crimes that could be linked with our investigation -
This is more than just an innocuous hate forum. It is an organised group operating outside of Detroit. Most, if not all, of these pictures depict locally-based crimes. There are also discussions alluding to local meet-ups and events."
Gavin looked down at the page, squinting in confusion. "...I don't see anything like that."
"Such posts appear to be procedurally deleted. No doubt for security reasons" Nines also glanced down at the paper before pointing its finger to a specific exchange. "Some evidence remains, however. Look here":
> bacon at cedars + me. organic and synth
Gavin took a moment to process the words when his eyes blew wide in realisation. Cedars Motel and Mikey's Electronics. From this, there were no points for guessing who 'bacon' might be.
>> What did they want?
>>> Tlla ha JSOX. ZS J
"Meet at CLHQ. SL C" Nines translated, barely sparing a glance from the paper. "It is a code within a code. Arrangements to meet in person."
"Son of a bitch”, The detective hissed, half-standing up from his chair. "Were you able to find any private chat logs? Or trace where these messages came from?"
"Unfortunately not", It lamented. "The forum appears to operate on a largely anonymous basis. Private chats are unavailable, and while usernames can be edited, most appear procedurally generated. Whoever this individual is, they have been careful to cover their tracks. I was unable to pinpoint their location."
"That fucker Mikey has a lot to answer for" Gavin was growing increasingly heated, clutching the end of the table. "I say we go back down there and beat it out of him."
"Tempting as that may be, I suggest we discuss matters with Captain Fowler first. Mr Scott is hiding something, and I believe a private interrogation may prove invaluable."
"Gotta admit Nines. You didn't disappoint. This is a solid fucking lead. Nice, uh - ", Gavin stalled, his words cut off by an unpleasant heat rising in his throat. He held his breath, willing away the inevitable, but with little success. "I'm gonna be sick."
Nines stood up. Judging by its face, it was less than enamoured by the prospect of vomit. Smoothing out the wrinkles in its dress pants, it gave him a curt nod. "I'll see myself out. Thank you for your time, Detective. I trust you will be well enough to join me tomorrow."
Gavin was unable to respond, making a dash for the bathroom, hand clutched to his mouth.

Solving Common Challenges in Android Text Message Archiving
Text messages can hold precious memories, important information, and even legal significance. But keeping them organized on your Android device can be tricky. While features like "archive" exist in the default messaging app, there are limitations and questions that arise when considering android archive text messages or text message archive android. Let's explore some common challenges and solutions for archiving your Android text messages effectively.
Challenge 1: Accidental Deletion
The "archive" function hides messages, but it doesn't truly remove them. However, accidental deletion is a real concern. Consider third-party SMS backup apps that create copies of your messages on the cloud or a local SD card.
Challenge 2: Limited Archive Functionality
The built-in archive might not categorize or search archived messages efficiently. Third-party apps often offer better search options and let you filter archived messages by contact or date.
Challenge 3: Long-Term Storage Needs
Archived messages still take up space on your phone. If you're dealing with a large volume of texts, consider exporting them to a format like .txt or .csv for storage on your computer or a cloud service. This frees up space on your device while keeping your archive accessible.
Challenge 4: Transferring Archives Between Devices
Switching to a new phone can be a hassle, especially if you want to bring your archived messages. Some backup apps offer easy transfer options, allowing you to restore your archive to your new device.
Remember:
Regularly back up your archived messages to avoid accidental data loss.
Explore third-party apps to address limitations in the built-in archive functionality.
Consider exporting your archive for long-term storage and to free up space on your device.
Choose a backup solution that allows easy transfer between devices.
By following these tips, you can overcome the challenges of archiving text messages on your Android device and ensure your important conversations are preserved.

First post
this is the first post of my new blog. I am going to try and update this with an archive of my online presence from instagram. If I were to archive my twitter content here, everyone would realize how funny I am and try to talk to me, so I won't be doing that.
I am currently sitting in an airbnb in Brussels, it is January 2025 and despite my windy morning drinking espresso and attempting to buy bread in French, I am scared. I do not like the billionaires. I do not like the UI of their platforms or the color of their politics. I do not feel comfortable with the overinflation of the concept of artificial intelligence. I do not like hearing, "I know I know, but they're really nice cars, the self driving is awesome." I feel sad hearing the words Efficiency Democratization of Content New Era of Creative Production chanted at trade show after trade show as I watch my friends get laid off, fired, or made redundant. That is, if there was even a show to hire them in the first place. I do not like being body checked onto the subway car of progress by thousands of others trying to shove in behind me, quasi-anime girls with perfectly shaded porcelain skin and a cyan rim light, all twelve fingers beckoning me inside, the crowd whispering "It's only a tool meant to make your life easier," in my ears as the fire burns the palm trees outside and people's bodies lay under my feet. I'm tired. And after all this time, I still just don't really get the incentive anymore. Surely the pie can't be this big? There can't nearly be enough slices for everyone. What are we working towards, if not our own redundancy. When will the client be the creator? Next year? Thank god there isn't a commercially available ai replicating little fingers unscrewing mini BNC connectors yet, or I'd really be fucked.
I'm a very cynical person, and I want to be able to post what I think. I want to be able to discuss politics with people without feeling like I'm on the verge of losing my personal and professional connections. But I'm a doomer so perhaps this is my curse. Even if it doesn't happen, I'll probably move forward like it will. I could just keep it to myself, but for some reason that feels like losing. I'm sure my opinions will change. I regularly consult Chat GPT for jokes and facts to make myself sound smarter, then stay awake at night thinking about the energy costs of me trying to get a good punchline. My life is almost entirely funded by the very organizations I fear the power and influence of. I'm no better than the people I shake my head at. But at least I'm honest! And that has to count for something. ?
This will be my only doomer post and it might just get deleted later. The real purpose of this blog is to post human generated art (mine) and the wonderful culinary adventures I partake in. If you're my friend, I miss you and I hope we can talk soon. There's a button on my blog where you can send me messages, and I also unbelievably still have a cell phone. I'm thinking of going Android though, so get me while you can, before I'm an untouchable social pariah (green text).

Word Count: 2.3K
DETROIT POLICE DEPARTMENT
01/15/2039
Case No: 437689
Reporting Officer: Detective Gavin Reed
Assisted by: RK900
Incident Type: Homicide
Address: 14D Hartwell Tower, West Detroit
Evidence:
Written Messages (Black Marker, Blue Blood)
Victims Diary (Possible Alias/Contact number used by culprit)
Polaroid Photos taken by suspect
I was dispatched to address and met at scene by attending officer, who escorted myself and partner to Apartment 14D. Front door to apartment was intact, no apparent forced entry. Victim (HR400 Android) was operating as sex worker, attacker may have posed as client to gain access.
Attack likely started in bedroom. Visible signs of struggle in hall, android had tried to escape. Fatal damage was inflicted, and shutdown occurred - weapon is currently unidentified.
Client information in the victims' diary suggests Male Suspect. Thod Graws – likely alias. Contact number yet to be traced.
Drag marks consistent with android being moved. Found displayed on curtain rail in bedroom. DNA evidence discovered at crime scene - currently being handled by forensics. Multiple profiles.
Gavin stalled in his movements, fingers hovering over his terminal keyboard. Despite his best efforts, he was finding it extremely difficult to concentrate with his current unwanted company. RK900 was sat across for him at an adjoining desk. It took none of the same effort to file its own report, pressing a hand to a nearby sensor, and upload its findings autonomously.
Not only did RK900 carry itself with an inflated sense of entitlement, but it was also able to flaunt its superiority over Gavin with an action as simple as blinking its eyes. He lamented the injustice of the situation, watching on with resentful envy.
"I sense that you are stressed, Detective", RK900 stated, not even bothering to look up from its terminal. "Perhaps a walk around the station may release some tension".
Gavin could think of several more satisfying ways to release his tension. Not of which were legal, regrettably, "Go fuck yourself".
He went back to the top of his report, compelled to make a few adjustments in light of recent inspiration:
Reporting Officer: Detective Gavin Reed
Assisted by: RK900 Officer RK900?? What is the fuckers name???
Incident Type: HomicideProperty Damage
Evidence:
Written Messages (Black Marker, Blue Blood)
Victims Diary (Possible Alias/Contact number used by culprit)
Polaroid Photos taken by suspect
Fuck All
"What is your name anyway?" Gavin said, more a demand than it was a question. "Don't think you ever bothered to tell me...".
RK900 did not respond immediately, as it appeared to be in the middle of a download cycle. Hand still pressed to the sensor on its desk, its lifeless grey eyes filled with the reflection of rapidly changing case files. The speed increased to such a degree that Gavin could not interpret meaningful information. Just a confusing blur of colours and text.
"My model number is sufficient".
Gavin pulled a face, mouthing the android's words in a mocking gesture:
Reporting Officer: Detective Gavin Reed
Assisted by: RK900 Officer RK900?? What is the fuckers name???
mY mOdEl NuMbEr Is SuFfIcIeNt
"When looking at the findings from the HR400 case, there are seven near-identical homicides that have occurred within a 10-mile radius", RK900 announced, removing its hand from the panel. "As well as fifteen further assault or harassment reports with notable similarities".
"How do you know they're connected?" Gavin challenged, folding his arms. "This could just be a bunch of random hate crimes".
"Our suspect works carefully not to incriminate themselves – they leave little to no DNA evidence. However, they like to leave calling cards for the police..." RK900 tilted its monitor, allowing Gavin to view the case files. As it scrolled through the images, Gavin observed a pattern of aggressive anti-android rhetoric. Scrawled in messages on nearby walls or scratched into tiles and floorboards, "The handwriting is consistent across the crime scenes".
"That's all well and good, but the fuck are we supposed to do with a handwriting sample in 2039?" If that's all we have to work with, then we're royally screwed".
RK900 frowned, turning the monitor back to its original position. "If you were to review the files yourself, perhaps you might find something of greater significance".
Gavin bristled at the statement. He straightened his back, sitting upright and regarding RK900 with an accusatory glare. "Come again?".
"You have worked here for significantly longer than me". RK900 stared at Gavin with cold, unblinking eyes. "Yet you seem to lack all the prerequisite skills to fulfil your duties. Perhaps this would explain why you are so consistently passed up for progression opportunities, not to mention promotion -".
Gavin did not give the android time to elaborate further. He slammed his hands on his desk and shot to his feet, seething with barely-contained rage. "Where do you get off telling me how to do my job?".
"I am one of – if not the – most advanced model that CyberLife has ever created", RK900 stated plainly. "I was programmed to assist in police investigations, with my performance continuously adjusted and monitored to uphold exceptionally high standards. I know incompetence when I see it".
"Is it in your damn programming to be such a prick all the time?".
"I am simply being honest".
Gavin balled his hands together, nails digging into his palms "They should have left you in the warehouse to rot, you fucking machine".
Gavin didn't think - couldn't think - as he propelled a fist forward. In the back of his mind, he knew that androids couldn't feel pain, and the act of trying to hurt one was pointless. This knowledge, however, did very little to detract from his desire to try.
High off adrenaline, and with seldom time to process what was happening, Gavin didn't immediately feel the vice-like grip held on his hand. The sensation only became apparent when it had been pinned harshly to the desk in front of him, entirely incapacitated. He stared down at the desk, horrified, and desperately tried to struggle free with little to no avail.
"Let go of me, you piece of - !".
"You are fortunate that I am not willing to fight you," There was a strange edge to RK900's voice, like static breaking on an old 2000's television "Had I been your hand would be broken".
Gavin felt a chill shoot up his spine. The unnerving static sounds, as well as the measured calmness of RK900's overall demeanour, was enough to rob him of any of his remaining confidence.
"Let go ", Gavin repeated, with significantly less spunk than last time. The android held firm despite his request, LED displaying a steady blue.
Blue.
Gavin knew what that meant. All systems were operational, no faults or threats detected. The situation was already humiliating enough, but the realisation that RK900 was not even having to exert itself was like a harsh slap in the face.
RK900 leant forward across the desk, positioning its mouth just above the shell of Gavin's ear "Even if I were you let you hit me, is the fleeting satisfaction you would feel worth losing your career over? People are watching, Detective Reed. I would consider your next move carefully".
The android was threatening him – and it was entirely credible, as much as Gavin loathed to admit. Even if he somehow managed to escape the altercation unscathed, Fowler would come down on him faster than ever before. He would be dismissed on the spot, and RK900 would have won.
Swallowing his pride, Gavin slowly stopped resisting. Though he stared at RK900 the entire time with near-murderous resentment. The android allowed a few moments to pass after Gavin had stilled completely, as if toying with the idea of not letting go. Eventually it relented, releasing its fierce grip with what almost sounded like a sigh.
Gavin shot his arm back, clutching at his aching digits in an attempt to soothe them. His fingers had turned pale from lack of blood flow, and they tingled unpleasantly as the sensation came back to them.
"If you ever pull a stunt like this again..." Gavin began, voice low and trembling in fury, "I don't care what happens to me. I will fucking murder you".
RK900 paused for a moment, seemingly surprised that Gavin had any fight left in him. After a while it shook its head, scoffing dismissively, "As we have just established, you couldn't hurt me even if you tried".
"Good Morning, Detective Reed. RK900". A new voice addressed them. The individual seemed unaware, or otherwise unperturbed, by the heated interaction that had just occurred. "I hope I am not interrupting anything?".
Just what I need. Another one. Gavin thought despairingly, concluding that he was overdue for an extended coffee break.
"What do you want, dipshit?".
Connor did not react to the detective's hostility, as if wholly desensitised to it. His brown eyes travelled curiously between Gavin and his predecessor before he regarded them with a pleasant smile. "I understand you were recently assigned to the murder of a former Traci. Tell me, what were your findings?".
"What's it to ya? Don't you and Anderson have your own cases you need to work on?"
"We do", Connor affirmed, nodding. "However, I do take a personal interest in this particular crime. I gather that it bares similarities to other recent attacks?".
"Several" RK900 affirmed, thoughtlessly clipping Gavin's shoulder as it stepped forward to speak with Connor. They blinked to each other in succession, LEDs whirring yellow as they shared information.
Gavin had always hated it when androids did that. It felt strangely excluding to the humans around them, like they were flaunting their membership to a private club that they could never hope to join.
"Interesting..." Connor remarked thoughtfully as his LED returned to blue "An android serial killer".
"It would appear so – and an active one at that. The most recent report came through just an hour ago. A deceased MJ100 android was discovered in a Ravendale alleyway".
RK900 turned to Gavin, lips curled into a disingenuous smile. "Should Detective Reed be so kind as to not commit me to the current mortality rates, I would suggest we go over to investigate".
"If you want this case so bad, Connor", Gavin hissed through gritted teeth, trying desperately to manage his breathing, "Then I suggest you take Robocop down to Fowler's office and ask to be reassigned. Tell him I'm not cut out for the job, or whatever. I couldn't give less of a shit".
Connor's smile began to fade as he tilted his head in confusion. "Apologies, Detective, it was not my intention to impose. I am confident that you and Nines have the situation under control".
Nines?
Who the fuck is Nines?
Gavin barely acknowledged that Connor had walked away as he stared into space, lost in thought. He was only stirred from his trance when RK900 grabbed him firmly by the shoulder.
"Will you be accompanying me to the crime scene, Detective, or are you intent on standing here all day?".
When they reached their dispatch vehicle, Gavin slid silently into the passenger seat without any quarrel. RK900 appeared somewhat confused by this, but made no attempt to challenge the detectives sudden change in demeanor. After inputting a direction request on the GPS, RK900 requested "Pilot Mode", to which the ignition obediently roared to life, and the vehicle slowly began to turn onto the road.
The only sound for most of the journey was low humming from the radio. Gavin continued to contemplate his unexpected revelation. Until then, he had been working under the pretence that RK900's detachment and hostility had been the fault of poorly thought-out programming. That it simply wasn't capable of behaving in any more agreeable manner.
"Connor called you Nines..." the detective muttered, staring out the car window.
He could see RK900 glance at him out of the corner of its eyes before it returned its attention to the road. "Excuse me?".
"I asked if you had a name, and you lied to my face", Gavin chuckled to himself humourlessly. "Why would you do that?".
RK900 remained silent at this, openly its mouth briefly before quickly closing it. Gavin wondered if it may have short-circuited. Its LED spun a continuous yellow and its jaw was locked unnaturally tight.
"Hello? You doing a software update or what?".
"It was not a name I chose for myself", RK900 said cooly. "It was assigned to me by Lieutenant Anderson, and RK800 appears to have adopted it. A nickname of sorts".
"How adorable" Gavin sneered, before making an animated gagging gesture "- and I don't get to know about your shweet 'wittle pet name because...?".
"From my understanding, terms of endearment tend to be reserved for use amongst friends" A sequence of button presses deactivated 'Pilot Mode' as RK900 took the wheel for the remaining stretch of the journey. "While I hope we can find a way to work together amicably, I cannot anticipate ever feeling fondness towards you".
"So I'm not good enough to be your friend? That's a real shame".
"I meant what I said yesterday - about our partnership. Just because I can conduct myself with professionalism, a skill you seem to be woefully lacking in, it does not detract from the complete disdain I feel towards you".
Gavin reeled back, RK900's words giving him all the confirmation he needed This isn't just its programming. It really fucking hates me.
Gavin was used to being hated, it was hardly anything new, but this was different. With human beings the reasons to hate someone were almost always subjective. The consequence of wounded pride or hurt feelings.
RK900 was not weighed by the same emotional limitations. The way it interpreted the world was cold and methodic, and Gavin Reed was not about to be spared from its harsh critique.
It didn't just assume his weakness - it confirmed it. Knowing and understanding his every flaw, RK900 showed no reluctance in sharing with Gavin what he had already feared was true.
I know incompetence when I see it.
"Screw you", Gavin spat, unsure how else to respond to his unpleasant swell of emotions. "I don't give two shits if you want to keep your nickname between you and your gal-pals. From now on, I'm calling you Nines".

Billionaire founder of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg has said that Threads, the social networking app competing with X(formerly Twitter), has surpassed 150 million monthly active users, up from 130 million in February This growth indicates a stable trajectory for the platform. Speaking on Wednesday, April 24, during Meta’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Zuckerberg said, “Threads is growing well too. There are now more than 150M monthly activities, and it continues to generally be on the trajectory I hoped to see. My daughters would want me to mention that Taylor Swift is now on Threads — that was a big deal in my house In recent months, Threads has made strides towards integration with ActivityPub, a decentralized protocol powering network like Mastodon. In March, the platform enabled U.S.-based users over 18 years old to link their accounts to the Fediverse, allowing their posts to be visible on other servers. Moreover, Meta plans to release Threads’ API to a broader set of developers by June, granting them the opportunity to create experiences around the social network. However, it remains unclear whether Threads will permit developers to develop fully-fledged third-party clients. Notably, Meta recently launched its AI chatbot across Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram, excluding Threads. This omission might be due to Threads’ lack of native direct messaging functionality. In another development, Threads introduced a test feature enabling users to automatically archive their posts after a defined period. Users can also individually archive or unarchive posts and choose whether to make them public. Despite being relatively young at around nine months old, Threads has steadily expanded its user base under Meta’s stewardship. Launched on June 5 last year, Meta Threads positioned itself as a “text-based conversation app” enabling users to share messages up to 500 characters in length, along with links, photos, and videos. The app garnered significant attention at its inception, with over 10 million users joining from the start. Additionally, it swiftly amassed 1 million downloads on the Google PlayStore within a single day of its release. The buzz around Threads was palpable, with many eager to sign up, drawn by its unique features distinguishing it from Twitter. However, despite its promising start and initial surge in sign-ups, Threads faced a notable decline in active users shortly after its launch. While it attracted over 100 million users within the first five days, more than half of them eventually ceased using the app actively. Third-party data from SimilarWeb revealed a sharp decrease in daily active users on Android. For instance, the number plummeted from 49 million on July 7 to 23.6 million on July 14 and further dwindled to 12.6 million by July 23. This decline in active usage indicated a significant challenge for Threads to maintain user engagement and retention over time.
