How to Download your Google Drive

I've seen at least five posts on my dash this morning (and have reblogged one or two myself) about what is happening with Google Drive - namely, the removal of written material that Google has decided breaks its terms of use.

**8/4/2025 - EDITED TO ADD: While the news about Google removing content was more about high volume sharing rather than the content itself, these instructions are still useful for anyone wishing to remove their content from Google.**

However, what I haven't seen is how to remove your files so you can move to a different platform.

There are several ways to approach this problem - one is to download the files one by one, another is to set up mirroring using Google Drive for desktop and then turn it off, and the other is to use Google's Takeout function to download the files in larger sections.

I used Takeout this morning and found it to be very easy to use.

I followed this tutorial from All Things How - the tutorial is from 2024, it has pictures and easily followed instructions and the whole process took me about 30 minutes. Yours may take longer depending on how many files you need to download.

Several things before you start this process.

First- take a deep breath. I know this seems really intimidating and the idea of losing all of your hard work is extremely anxiety-inducing, but you can do this and it will be okay.

Make sure you have another word processor installed on your computer. I've seen many suggestions for different services but LibreOffice is free and will open .docx files, which will be important later if you are using Google Takeout. When you set up your exports, it will ask you what file type you want them as, and your only options for Docs files are .pdf and .docx.

Make sure you have a zip extractor installed on your computer. When Google packages your files for export, it will do so in either a .zip or .tgx file, and you will need a file extractor to pull the files back out. I'm sure many of us are familiar with .zip files - .tgx files work in much the same way but can be made with more data. Depending on your operating system, it may be able to handle these files already or you may need the extractor. I just downloaded 7-Zip, which was recommended by several sites and is free.

Have a plan for where you are going to put these files - your harddrive, another cloud service, or an external drive. This may be a lot of data, so make sure you have space.

If you have not done so already, take note of where your files are saved in GDrive. You will have an option using Takeout to select which folders to export, so having all the things you want in a single folder may be helpful.

Once you've done these things, take another look at the tutorial and follow the steps they outline. You've got this. It will be okay.
