I think it's such an interesting aspect of Future that we see that the Gem shards aren't dead. Legitimately. This isn't me goofing off or criticizing the epilogue for "un-killing" the CGs in the core of the Earth.

Frankly, I think that this is way more fucked up.

A Gem needs all their pieces to be, well, themselves. We see this clearly here. And from Peridot's description, we know that a gem shard is just a small, confused part of a person, desperately trying to find its missing pieces.

It requires every single piece to make that Gem whole. She's 99% complete, yet inert, without that last little piece.

Imagine, if you will, a giant mass of flesh. Just a heaping mound of stitched together organs and pieces of skin. Some of it is faces. Some of it is lungs. Some of it is still beating hearts.

All of it is alive.

Worse yet, they're constantly yearning for their original bodies. Together, they can move one arm- only for a short time, only until they get tired, but hey, at least it's a buff arm, right?

Wouldn't you want it to be dead? Wouldn't the concept of it being sentient be horrifying? That this scientific mockery of life has every single memory of being an individual person in every single cell it has, but it's so unstable and broken that all it can think of is "I need to be whole".

Thankfully, the Cluster gets along with itself. It binds with itself. But it's still just pieces of a person, struggling and pulsating and full of anguish.

Annual Sense8 rewatch time. It’s officially my tenth time through and I still notice new things. Like I only today had an epiphany about why Will, Riley, and Nomi are all so much more quickly affected and thrown into the sensate sensory experiences. Will has already been primed through his pre-birth connection to Sara Patrell. Nomi is the first to see another sensate (Jonas) irl which pulls her deeper into the experience much faster. And Riley is using DMT very early on in her birth process, speeding up her ability to exchange and communicate.

Everyone else in the cluster is having very small moments of sharing during moments of intense emotion. Kala gets pulled into Wolfgang’s experience while he’s having sex. Sun calls upon Capheus’s calming energy when she’s upset by the businessman, seeing the chicken in her office. And Lito is having almost no sharing experience at all until Hernando breaks up with him. All of their journeys in this first season are perfect.

The Cluster is a Gem superweapon buried deep in the Earth's core that, when it emerges, will be "much, much bigger than the Earth".

The diameter of the Earth as represented in the first image is 12,756 kilometers or 138 pixels. The diameter of the hatched Cluster is 168 pixels or 15529.04348 km. That's a radius of 7764521.75 meters.

Now, for mass, the Hard Light that gem bodies are made if can't really be realistically weighed, so I'll have to assume it has similar weight properties to human bodies (Gems can shapeshift to replicate human bodily functions after all).

Human flesh weighs 1100 kg per m³. Convert meters to meters³ and the Cluster is 468100000000000000000 m³. That gets us a weight of 514910000000000000000000 kg.

Assuming 0 for the polytropic index gets us a Gravitational Binding Energy of 1367400000000000000000000000000 joules or 326 Exatons (Moon Level)

....That seems low for a planet destroying superweapon. Let's try something else.

Kinetic Energy

The Cluster grows to full size in 2 seconds, sending chunks of the Earth flying into space. The mass we've just estimated expanding out to 15529.04348 kilometers in 2 seconds would be traveling at 7764520 m/s or 3% light speed. Plugging that into a relativistic kinetic energy calculator gets us 15529201122939549865608272713072186258 joules or 3 Ninatons of TNT (Large Planet Level). Much better.
