That “Daenerys is fireproof” nonsense is a show-only invention, and it’s garbage. George R.R. Martin has said outright—multiple times—that Dany’s immunity to fire during Drogo’s pyre was a one-time magical event, not a blanket Targaryen trait. She isn’t fireproof. She burns in the books. The show just couldn’t help themselves with the messiah imagery and dialed it up to 11.

Now, to the actual question—did the Targaryens of Valyria have fire immunity? No. Not in any consistent, biological sense. The Valyrians were resistant to heat, yes—likely due to their magical bloodline and constant exposure to volcanic environments. But they were not fireproof gods. If they were, half the family wouldn't have died in fiery accidents, including the entirety of Summerhall. Targaryens burn. They’re not immune—they’re just egotistical pyromaniacs with good PR.

What did happen with Daenerys at Drogo’s pyre was a convergence of blood magic, death, dragons, and sacrifice—an ancient, forgotten rite that cost lives and twisted reality for a single night. Mirri Maz Duur was a catalyst. Drogo’s death, Dany’s pain, her stillborn son, and the burning of a maegi all blended into a violent, magical rebirth. It wasn’t biology. It was sorcery.

Targaryens are not fireproof. Dany walking through fire was a miracle, not a racial trait. The show made it dumb. The books keep it dark, rare, and costly.
