07 - The Chariot: Kiran Estevez
[ID: Kiran is in the Lake House, standing just above the Federal Bureau of Control circular logo drawn on the floor. She holds a shotgun in her hands, and looks focused at the video playing just above the elevator, off-screen]
The Chariot says that if you combine the knowledge of your mind with your heart, you can overcome any challenge. Keep determinated. Six deep breaths.

Everyone talks about the tragedy of animated media getting reboots that replace their excellent art direction with uncanny realism —like the Lion King and its “live action” reboot—- but there’s one series that embodies that tragedy better than anything else. And I need to share it with you all because I can’t be the only one Haunted by it day and night. Please let me tell you the Sad, sad story behind this image:
Tumblr media
There was an early 2000s video game trilogy called Sly Cooper, whose main appeal was its super unique art direction, style, and atmosphere. The trilogy had a unique tone focused on a cartoon Phantom Thief who did Moody Atmospheric Heists in a comic-book-inspired world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trilogy integrated 2D animation into the game for cutscenes, and the characters-- while low-poly-- were designed to look as much like those flat 2D cartoons with cel-shaded outlines as they could within the limitations of the Ps2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It took heavy influence from comic books and anime, especially Lupin III. The first game even had alternate anime versions of its 2D cutscenes that you could unlock!
Tumblr media
Nearly all the levels took place at night, but the designers talked often about how their goal was to create the illusion of night time through vivid color palettes rather than darkness, taking inspiration from the vivid nighttime cityscapes in Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge.
Tumblr media
As a result of their stylized art direction, the visuals-- primarily in the second one, which is the one that focuses the most tightly on Thieving & Moody Atmospheric Heists-- still hold up today.
And then Sly Cooper started appearing in “brand crossover games” and “reboots” and Oh god. Oh no. so that's why no one talks about it anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am haunted by this. People talk about their favorite cartoon character getting hit with the Uncanny Hyper-Detailed Beam and I instantly think of the sad fate of poor, poor sly cooper, who I am very nostalgic for, and his now-dead franchise that hasn't had a new installment in over a decade.
But to me this really emphasizes how strong art direction is far more important than polygon count, realism, or level of detail. Because there have been similar franchises rebooted in ways that manage to elevate the old 2D-inspired art styles with more modern graphics. Toys for Bob's new takes on Spyro and Crash Bandicoot both had stellar art direction!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that kind of thoughtful art direction can be difficult to achieve. It's not even the fault of the artists or developers; these things are often beyond their control. But I am glad we're in an era where stylized 3D animation is becoming more popular. I hope more creators continue to realize that there is actually a big demand for media with interesting, unique art styles! also you should play sly 2: band of thieves

I tried to learn to mimic The Fairly Oddparents artstyle specifically for this drawing (while also fudging some things to be more comfortable for my own drawing style lol). I'm pretty happy with how it turned off though! Especially Cosmo. I think I actually did a good job with Cosmo
Original image below cut, and shout out to @msnihilist for the drawing prompt! I hope it meets your expectation o7

Lost time | Part 1 (here) | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4
Everyone makes mistakes, even if you are allegedly an immortal, all-seeing eye.
Sometimes, if you get really wasted with your boytoy situationship, you can make a mistake.
Sometimes you might try to destroy the evidence, but then think twice and instead decide you'll raise the mistake and give it all the love you never received.
But sometimes you might actually suck at that.
Sometimes you can lose contact with that mistake because you and your situationship were too busy fighting over trivial things, like portals and world domination, to pay attention to him. Oopsie!
And sometimes you can reunite with that mistake, almost 30 years later, to find that he is now a washed-up divorcee with an abandonment complex who can't keep a job, is struggling to pay rent in the state of California, and is father to two of your sworn enemies.
But if that happens to you, don't worry. It's totally normal. Happens to all of us!
It's fine.

brb going feral over the fact that Ponyboy felt the need to emphasize "this place is real it's not just in my head" in Far Away from Tulsa like?? he's so internalized the idea that he's "just a dreamer" that it's blurring the lines between fiction and reality - it's almost like he's starting to struggle to tell them apart or at least doubt his ability to (which is THE audhd mood but I digress). to make things more complicated, the place he's talking about is admittedly somewhere he's seen "in the movies and in the books I've read" so it's not real! but he needs it to be and Johnny understands that, trusts Pony when he says this possibility of another life is real, and starts adding to the story. their ideas are creating reality. while Ponyboy is literally telling this entire story from the future. I need to go lie down

no bc i really don't trust people who genuinely think saiki hates his friends. like i get it, saiki does wanna be alone most times. but did they miss the eps where saiki kept an eye on his friends even when they weren't together and helped them?? i mean i could name numerous cases where he puts his friends above all else. i thought we all knew saiki is an unreliable narrator?? 😭 plus his mother did Not raise him like that

Hii!! I just am getting out of high school and since I am in a graphic design class and do art, my economics teacher suggested that I start selling my work and doing commissions. I know that your art isn't the same as that but I was wondering if you had any suggestions of how to get started is the art sphere? Like which platforms should I advertise my art one? The biggest one I have seen is Instagram and Tiktok but I am hesitant to use either cause of Instagram using your posts as AI training data and Tiktok being video content, which i am not interested in. Any input is appreciated!
Hi Hiiii!
Even though my art isn't 1:1 to this I do have some experience and thoughts about getting started. Graphic design (my profession) and Illustration/art (my hobby) are two very different spheres though, so I'll break down a couple thoughts on each. For graphic design, any kind of client work is going to start to get you ahead and also get you thinking about what kind of work you like doing/want to get paid to do. Since soooo many things fall under the umbrella of graphic design (packaging, logos, websites, events, branding, motion, marketing, etc etc etc) starting to make real things and figuring out how the elements all work together is super important. You don't have to be able to do everything, but showing and knowing which areas you can help a team with will be great for getting those initial internships and junior designer positions. This could look like anything from designing logos for family and friends, to making up a pretend coffee shop and designing what the cups and signs and instagram feed might look like all together. Maybe design a website or two. Have fun and get it posted to a portfolio website (there are a lot of free options). The more things you finish, the better your portfolio will get, and the more you will know. Done is better than perfect. Get scrappy. For illustration, my experience is mostly with social posting and convention stuff. Draw as much as you can all the time, fill your sketchbooks with fun and bad and ugly art that you enjoy making to get in the habit and get loose. Then just like for graphic design, work on finishing stuff. The more you finish, the more you'll figure out your process to finish things. Done > Perfect once again. Post wherever you want (i also dont like tiktok bc i dont make video/motion stuff, and i mostly just use insta for keeping other artists' contacts - i probably only post about 10% of what i make there, but it is a nice one to have.) From there, start offering cheap commissions or requests to get used to working with other people's ideas (I think i started with $5 sketches that i could do in 10ish minutes back in 2011). I don't do public commissions anymore, but I did for many, many years and making sure you're smart with your time is a big tip (its why the sketch/lines/full color + halfbody/fullbody character price sheets are so popular. An artist offering these knows about how long it takes them to draw each combination and sets their price accordingly, more time = more money). As for selling at stuff like conventions or art shows, start small! See if you can get space at a small local fair or art market! Make and sell 10 finished things. Don't set your heights on the biggest, most competitive stuff right off the bat, or try to manage inventory for 100 items. That can all come later.
The "art sphere" is kind of a crazy place, and there are infinite ways to approach getting started. You do you. These tips are mostly targeted at career-style advice, but plenty of people are just here to have fun, and it really is way easier to keep the passion alive when you're making/expressing stuff for just yourself - balance work and play!! The only thing we all have in common is a love for making things!
Good luck out there, and have fun!

you know the hyperfixation is extreme when you are willing to learn an entire craft and become a slave to the animation industry just so that you can make content for it. i would put my blood, sweat, and tears into animating all of scum villain if it didn’t also grind my soul into a million pieces.
#⚙️#I need to be working right now but all i can think about is storyboarding my favorite scenes#and how i would animate sqq’s micro-expressions. like Frieren does a very good job at keeping stoic characters stoic while drawing attentio#to the tiniest shift in their emotions. like i get that it can be hard to animate a protagonist with a 24/7 poker face#who also has bat-shit crazy internal dialogue... but it can be done if you think outside the box. don't just get rid of the poker face.#like right now I'm imagining a little ghost-version of sqq doing all of his internal monologue around the rest of the characters#but he shows up less and less as the story goes on. idk maybe I'd do something else but i kind of like that idea so far.#and of course whenever lbh and sqq have a scene together the perspective would change depending on where they are in their relationship#and how they see each other.#book 1 would show sqq from below eye-level because lbh looks up to him literally and figuratively#book 2: sqq is shown above eye-level and lbh below eye-level bc. height difference obviously but lbh is scary and intimidating#and sqq feels cornered.#at the end of book 3 they'd both have eye-level perspective etc etc#why does the hyperfixation kick in whenever i have shit to do.#ugh and i would use multi-media for whenever xin mo does weird xin mo shit#svsss#mxtx svsss#scum villain’s self saving system#rzfzx#ren zha fanpai zijiu xitong#scumbag self saving system#scum villian self saving system#scum villains self saving system#scum villain self saving system
