HC; Scala Ad Caelum.
If there was one place that managed to be disturbingly pristine for Sora's adventures, it'd be in the location where one of the greatest battles of his life took place. What managed to capture him while in the process of trying to process the hellish extents he endured and continue to press through, it's how violently adjacent to the destructive chaos that Xehanort wanted to enact on them all.
Stepping into the old Master's most precious memory, how through experience and resolve, the location feels more dead than alive. This is what leads to his encounter with the replicas as the most uncomfortable fight he's ever dealt with.
At their best, they felt like recorded and empowered apparitions made by Xehanort's hand, used to display the very powers he stole without the need for heart or soul. And at the worst, it felt like he was Heartless that were more man than monster at that point. It was the sheer lack of how it all registers within this location that disturbs him, similar to being frozen in time.
Places like End of the World, or Xemnas's World of Emptiness, they at least held the life of their ambition fueling either the dark dissent or the vast emptiness they attempt to embody. Something human could scarcely be perceived.
Sora would get no such sensation when going against that haunted armor and apparitions fashioned by Xehanort's side. As their destruction through battle comes to let calamity befall this memory, it gets a bit more real, more haunting, the sort of heaviness as if he's cleaving through entities that were forcefully forsaken by time's river itself. Life... to the Keybearer, life was not supposed to work like that.
It's one of those battles that he'd come to get nightmares about the easiest. The silent arrival, the lifeless way they'd carry themselves, as if being puppeted by a force that worked alongside of Xehanort's control instead of being fully by his head. When it he fights the reunited armor alongside of Kairi at the end of Re:Mind.
It makes a bit more sense in one aspect.
Whatever that was? It was an enemy that might've been lurking throughout time and space, surrounding them for a lot longer than he's ever come to realize.
..And truthfully? Sora is getting the idea this is the time of their advent.
Was it another force of the Darkness that seamlessly rivaled Xehanort in power?
#| HCs#I wanted to add the detail about how No Name's eyes were glowing red for the first time#but tbh Sora wouldn't be noticing or really caring about that#when the potential end of it all (outside his existence erasure) was at the finish line#Scala has genuinely been ruined for him to a degree
