every time lockwood could have have died throughout the duration of the first season of lockwood & co (2023). an extensive list.

my definition of a potential-death worthy occurrence:

1) a present threat was actively seeking to kill and/or seriously maim

2) the action itself is notably dangerous and therefore invites substantial risk of death

3) highly dangerous circumstances that are placed on the character in their external environment

cw: canon typical violence & sui

- killed by annabel ward’s ghost under ghostlock after he broke the iron filing circle

- burned to a crisp in the house he lit on fire as a result of that

- killed by any ghost in any room of combe carey hall

- crushed by rubble from greek fire explosion to stop the monks

- shot by fairfax point blank after daring him to shoot him point blank

- killed by bickerstaff’s ghost in kensal green (1)

- murdered by julius winkman at his warehouse, staged as suicide pact (1)

- being discovered in the back room before the auction by anyone other than a double agent

- murdered by winkman (2)

- jumping off a tall building into the thames

- beaten to death by winkman/winkman goons in kensal green (3)

- killed by the ghosts he unleashed to deal with said goons

- shot by sir rupert gale

- falling backwards down a deep open pit into the catacombs because he got shot by sir rupert gale

- killed by bickerstaff’s ghost (2)

contentious items:

1. every time (except ep8) lockwood fights gale have debatable fatality. i personally don’t think he was trying to kill them in the black library, just apprehend them, so i don’t list that as a time he could have died. however its much more unclear in the second fight when gale is hunting the bone glass. i’m unsure if gale was using deadly force, because let’s be real: you want to kill someone you get a gun and shoot them, which he LITERALLY DID the last time he saw him, implying that he might not have been aiming to kill lucy and lockwood in ep7. but the situation he placed them in led to them jumping off the building, which is listed.

2. fighting fairfax’s assistant during the break in. in my opinion it’s clear they were never in life threatening danger. she tied up george but she didn’t actually hurt him, and only used force when she was apprehended. this was clearly the non-murderous attempt at stopping lockwood & co from discovering his secret, which clearly failed so they had to escalate to the real murderous attempt.

The Secret Ingredient (Willy Wonka (2023) x Fickelgruber Daughter) Chapter Seven: A Taste of Love

Oh my. There seem to be flamingoes blocking the road. What a pity.

“What the devil is going on?” Father complains in the seat across from me.

Beeeep! Beep! Beep!

“A fish delivery truck crashed,” our driver tells him.

He rolls his eyes impatiently. “How much longer are we to be stuck here?”

The driver starts to respond but is cut off by a voice on the radio.

“The town square was closed today in response to an incident-”

Oh no. They’re reporting on Willy’s giraffe operation! And Slugworth must have picked up on it because his car is speeding past us! And father’s catching on.

“Follow him!”

“Father- But the birds-?” I stutter.

“Now!”

And here we- Go! The car takes off and I’m flung into the seat. Good gracious! Willy must have struck gold because they never act this hasty. But what can I do to slow them down? When we arrive at the church the momentum drives me forward and I smack my head on the window.

“Wait here!”

Father climbs out and skedaddles up the stairs to join the others. They enter the church and in a quick flash I see Slugworth pull something from his pocket. A gun?

“No!” I shriek and dash out of the backseat. I’ve lost him once! I won’t lose him again!

I pull the heavy door open and spot the chocolatiers approaching the confession booth. Willy and Noodle are still down there! In a moment of quick thinking I take off my shoe and chuck it straight at Slugworth’s head. They all turn to me and before I can move I feel someone pull me away. Why are the monks helping these maniacs? They’re going to kill them!

“Bind her!” Slugworth barks at the monk, still rubbing the spot where my shoe struck him.

“Daughter! Have you lost your mind?” Father scoffs at my behavior.

“I love him!” I seethe and all but spit venom at their despicable faces. “And I will not stand aside-!”

A gag tightens around my mouth. No! No! No!

“Oh yes you will.”

Slugworth smirks down at me and gives a small wave as they enter the confession booth. As they’re lowered down my stomach drops as well. I feel sick. In ten minutes they’ll be back and order for someone to clean up the mess. The monks are just standing by without a single care! Is there no justice left in this place?

A groaning sound brings my attention back to the booth and the door opens. The chocolate cartel steps out, still munching on what looks like Willy's chocolate.

“Well Wonka might have been nutty as a fruitcake but he sure did know how to make chocolate.”

“But do you think we should’ve saved some for the orange man?” Prodnose asks Slugworth.

Orange man? It’s him! They’re talking about the man Willy mentioned earlier!

Slugworth huffs at the question and tosses around an empty jar. “Tell me you’re joking.”

“Um. Yes?”

“Because there’s no such thing as a little orange man, you nincompoop!”

Father kneels down and grabs my arm. “Alright, Charlotte. Time to go.”

I ask a handful of questions but my gag muffles my voice. What did they do? Are they dead? Did they suffer?

“Oh look. There’s your loverboy now.”

Slugworth points to the floor at a small window. Is that-? It’s Willy and Noodle. They’re alive! And swimming in chocolate? What did they do?!

“We’re giving him what he always wanted,” Slugworth comments. “A life made of chocolate. Literally. Wave bye bye!”

As if killing them isn’t enough? I’m forced to watch them drown?!

“Cheer up!” Prodnose removes my gag and hands me a truffle. “Here, have some chocolate.”

“I don’t want your wretched chocolate!” I spit and glare up at father. “You killed him, father! And I will never forgive you! Willy might have been poor but he made me feel twice the price you put on me!”

“She needs to cool down,” Father says to Slugworth. “Sit her into confession and let’s get out of here.”

I’m shoved into a booth and I hear something being shoved against the door. So now I’m on time out. A punishment for being a pesky daughter. Or a way of hiding a witness. There’s no way I’ll see the light of day now. Father knows I’ll head straight for the authorities. Is there no way out? I have to save them-!

Thud.

Um. What was that?

Thud.

The booth door opens but I don’t see- Oh! I see a top of green hair. And when I look down I see a little orange man in a spiffy white suit!

“Ah, Ms. Fickelgruber. Might I be of assistance?” He asks in a crisp voice.

“Mmhh-Wwaa!” Oh. Right. I’m still gagged.

“Here, allow me.” I lean over and the orange man loosens the cloth. “Lofty, at your service.”

“Willy! He’s in trouble-!” I gasp.

“Already taken care of,” Lofty replies smoothly and points outside. “See for yourself.”

I stumble out of the booth and look over to the one next to me. The compartment’s rising up and- And Willy and Noodle are inside! Covered head to toe in melted chocolate!

“Oh my Lord. He’s alive!” I give Lofty a quick squeeze. “Thank you! Thank you so much!”

“Alright alright! No more hugging!” he complains and breaks free, straightening his coat.

I scramble across the room and Willy sees me. He breaks into a sprint and wraps me into a hug.

“Willy! You’re ok! And you’re covered in chocolate!” I gush and try to wipe the sweet dessert away so I can see his face. “I could just eat you up!”

“That comes later! Now’s the time for justice!”

He lifts me up one last time and takes off running for the church door. Noodle, whom I see is carrying a certain book, gives me a sly grin.

“Told you he loves you.”

“Yes yes, you were right,” I give in and point to the book. “What’s this for?”

“Evidence.” She looks down. "Where's your shoe?"

Oh. Right. I’m still half barefoot! It’s been one of those days. I suppose I should fetch it.

Noodle walks over to the Chief’s partner. The Chief himself is standing dumbfoundedly at the bottom of the stairs, staring up at- Oh my! The big three are clinging to the fountain to keep from floating away!

“You didn’t eat any of those chocolates, did you Mr. Slugworth?” Willy asks from below.

“Why? What are they?” Slugworth demands.

“They’re hover chocs!” Willy laughs. “Delayed action, but extra strong.”

“You think you’re so clever,” Slugworth sneers. “But there’s billions of sovereigns of chocolate beneath our feet. We’ll get the best lawyers, bride the judge, rig the jury if we have to. We’ll be fine!”

Oh. Right. They own the justice system in this town. Even if we can provide evidence there’s no guarantee-

“I wish I had thought of that,” Willy says distantly but then looks up at where Noodle’s standing near a lever. “Hey, Noodle!”

She gives the lever a crank and a loud rumble comes up from the ground. The ice on the fountain cracks and suddenly a wave of chocolate erupts from the top! The surprise causes the chocolatiers to let go and begin drifting into the sky.

“What is that?” Prodnose asks.

“It’s our chocolate!” Father shouts.

“All our chocolate! We’re ruined!”

“Ah, don’t worry gentlemen!” Willy calls up at them. “You’ll come down eventually! Probably. I think. But until then-” He waves his hat at the gathered crowd. “Ladies and gentlemen! Willy Wonka, and friends, we invite you to enjoy our chocolate!”

A cheer echoes across the courtyard and everyone gathers around the sugary fountain. Even the Scrubbitts’ lot is here! It’s all over now. Now Willy can find a store, they can go free, and I- I will have to face my father when he returns. But from the looks of things that book will give more than enough to lock him up.

Right now… I’d love to celebrate. But no one knows me. I’ll only spoil this party when people find out who my father is. I can wait here for-

“There you are! Why are you hiding?” Willy jogs up to me and holds up a piece of chocolate. “Here, I’ve got something for you.”

“Willy, I- Oh!”

He pops it into my mouth and- It’s… Everything. Joy, sadness, adventure, all wrapped up like a big hug. My thinking comes to a halt and all I can do is stare ahead. Love. It’s like tasting love!

“How is it, Willy?” Noodle asks. “Is it as good as you remember?”

Willy’s still chewing his own piece of chocolate. I can tell he tastes the same thing I do. He’s thinking about his own mother.

“Every little bit of it. I just wish it could last forever.”

I take his hand. “You found your spark again, Willy.”

The candy man’s eyes lift up to look at me and he holds a hand to my face. “I found you too.”

Suddenly he jumps up and motions for me to stay put. “Wait here. Don’t move a muscle! I’ve got a surprise for Noodle, and then I’ve got something for you.” He points to me.

Willy grabs Noodle’s hand and they take off running to the rest of the Scrubbitts’ gang. A surprise? After today I’ve had my fill of surprises. But I know this one will be well worth it.

“I’ll be here, Mr. Wonka.”

I take a seat on the stairs, thinking about things I never thought possible an hour ago. Things that need to be done. Meetings to make, papers to sign, policies to change. And, if I’m not mistaken-

“Hello, dear!”

A voice snaps me from my thoughts. Lottie, my Lottie, and Mr. Snickers? They’re here too! They must have heard by now.

“Charlotte, we’ve been thinking. You do know your father-”

“Please don’t mention him,” I ask of her. “I’d rather not think about him.”

“That’s what we’re getting at,” Mr. Snickers says. “He’s going to be in jail for a while, so we thought-”

“If you might be up to it-” Lottie inputs.

“-you would let us adopt you.”

My jaw drops. “Me?”

Lottie gently grabs my arms and looks at me with a kind smile. “You’re a very sweet girl, Charlotte. We’d love to give you the family you deserve.”

A smidgen of doubt clouds my face. “Will I still run the business?”

“Yes, of course,” Mr. Snickers assures. “We know how much it means to you. We’ll help you.”

I’m about to start crying again! More happy tears. How can my emotions ride such an unpredictable roller coaster in one day? All in one day everything is falling into place! I can’t stop smiling!

“I’d love that very much!” I answer.

Lottie pulls me in and we all embrace in a big hug. Willy’s chocolate really does have a special magic after all. Without it all of this would be a dream.

If only I could guess what surprise Willy has in store…

Long Seen as Omens, Comets Do Tell Us Something About Ourselves - by Rebecca Boyle | Atlas Obscura - Stories | 20th/11/2024

For Millenia, Comets Have Fascinated Us, Filled Us With Dread, & in Some Ways, Made Us Who We Are.

In April of 1066, a streak of cool fire appeared in the heavens. The comet, called a “bearded star” back then, had appeared before. There are mentions of it around the world dating as far back as the fifth century B.C. It’s now called Halley’s Comet, for the 18th-century scientist who first calculated its return. But in the spring of 1066, the people of England saw this particular comet as a bad omen.

Across the English Channel, Duke William of Normandy viewed the bearded star as a good sign. A few months later, William’s army invaded England and, on Oct. 14, 1066, defeated Harold’s forces at the Battle of Hastings. The Anglo-Saxon king Harold was killed, and on Dec. 25, William was crowned King of England. The course of history changed forever.

In late September 2024, a similar spectral object smeared across the night sky. For much of October, Americans went out at night to photograph that comet, called C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan–ATLAS. It was discovered both by China’s Purple Mountain Observatory and by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System in early 2023, but it became visible with unaided eyes only this fall. It gradually faded from view as the calendar turned toward November. Was the Atlas comet also an omen, signifying a change in political leadership?

The answer is no: Comet A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was not a portent of the American presidential election’s outcome, despite some social media posts suggesting as much. (By the way, the box office success of Top Gun: Maverick, also claimed as an omen of the return of Donald Trump to the White House, was not connected either.) What’s interesting to me is why people try to make these connections at all.

Astronomy is the study of what actually happens in the universe, which for most of us is represented by the night sky we can see. Astrology aims to ascribe meaning to those objects and their doings and, while I can appreciate that astrology connects us to the cosmos, it is not a form of science. And yet—comets make us stop for a moment.

More than the phases of the Moon, more than Mercury in retrograde orbit, more than meteor showers or the zodiac signs, comets can bridge the divide between astronomy and astrology. They are unique enough, and unsettling enough, to fit within both approaches to skywatching.

The earliest written mythology, the Epic of Gilgamesh, tells a story of a shooting star and questions what it could mean. References to Halley’s Comet are found in Babylonian clay tablets more than 2,000 years old. In China, the Mawangdui Silk Texts, an almanac dated to 168 B.C., contains the oldest known illustrated comet catalog. Later, Christian monks in the Middle Ages believed comets were visiting stars that brought messages or heavenly omens. The Venerable Bede, an Anglo-Saxon monk who lived in the eighth century, is the one who described them as having hair or beards.

In the past, a comet’s arrival almost always heralded change of some kind. Often, they were things to fear, but some cultures saw them as motivational. William of Normandy was neither the first nor last king to plan an assault under a comet’s auspices. Even after scientists began to understand them in the 17th century, people remain awed and inspired by their recurrence.

In a purely scientific sense, comets do represent us. Comets are leftovers from the primordial solar system, and might provide clues to the chemistry and physical conditions that existed when the sun was a young star and Earth and the other rocky terrestrial planets were young worlds. Gravity flings comets from the depths of the Oort Cloud, where the sun’s light barely outshines any other star, toward the center of our solar system and then back out, their comings and goings enabling us to understand how other things—like asteroids—might come flying in our direction one day.

Some astronomers & planetary scientists think comets helped make us who we are. They contain copious amounts of ice, vaporizing as they approach the sun. It’s possible that these snowy dust-balls could have brought water to Earth’s oceans. Edmund Halley himself, the astronomer who predicted the return of the great comet of 1066, theorized that comets could have delivered enough water to create a great deluge, perhaps the one responsible for the Great Flood in so many creation myths. An 18th-century Presbyterian minister & scientist popularized this theory, though most astronomers now think it holds little water. Though many astronomers think asteroids have historically done more damage, a few theorize that a comet flattened a massive area of Russian forest in 1908, a catastrophe known as the Tunguska Event. And a popular theory, though dismissed by many, holds that a comet could have contributed to the Younger Dryas, a cool period after the end of the last ice age, and may have helped wipe out megafauna like the woolly mammoth.

We are still making meaning out of comets’ arrival, in other words. The fact that we can predict them, and even land on them, does not diminish their mystery.

Halley’s Comet will be back in 2061, and those who are still here will be treated to a show much older than our species. Comet Atlas has been here before, too. Its last visitation was 80,000 years ago. That is before civilization as we know it, before the Younger Dryas, before even the oldest human cave art. Our species was here then, as hunters and gatherers who would have chased bison and mammoth while running from saber-tooth tigers. Our distant ancestors would have looked up and noticed the comet. Viewing it near the Moon or bright stars at sunset, they would have wondered at its sudden appearance, and why it later vanished. They might have imagined it as fire, maybe viewed it as a gift, or a warning of something terrible to come.

We don’t know what people thought before written history, but we know they thought something. We know they would have derived meaning from it. Today, the meaning we make from comets is scientific, but no less human.

I know that I have put them in the spotlight of my Tumblr page before, but last Sunday they played their very last local show at The Pit's, there's one more goodbye show but that one is sold out so this was my personal goodbye to the band. So now the band can take its place between other Kortrijk punk legends such as The Hot Rod Honeys, The Jesus Disease, and The Definitivos. So the first set of songs are my personal hommage to the band, with two of my favorite tracks of theirs, and two tracks that they have covered. Thanks Freddie!
