in a few days i shall soon present to you the very personal, likely quite long jewish heinrich faust meta (aka approximately at least 1,000 words worth of me rambling on about how this extremely specific headcanon slots in very well from a thematic standpoint into the plot of goethe's "faust")

#personal #i'm not 100% familiar with goethe's interactions with judaism #(or if he held period-typical antisemitic beliefs lol)#and i'm not going to claim that a jewish faust was his intention #but i guess part of the appeal of goethe's take for me is #the sort of... distance from christianity it has compared to other versions of faust?#like the christianity is very much there. but it doesn't feel like it's as central an element to heinrich faust #as it does other versions of the character #but. i'm of german jewish descent #and have studied/continue to study jewish history #so i think there's a lot of potential to explore really specific themes #that would have been relevant to when the play took place #(or rather when it was written)#(because my faust retelling/main fic is set in the early 1800s)
