Best Software For Animation
2D Animation Software Programs
Toon Boom Studio 4 Toon Boom Studio is at the top when it comes to animation software for internet users. It is a practical application made by animators for animators. If you want to create your own original animations then it is a perfect choice. See it here motion graphics
Animationish Developed with the assumption that entertainment programs should not be too complicated to produce effective and funny cartoons, Animationish is an excellent program for learning the basics of animation.
Flip Boom Toon Boom producers created this animation program with children in mind. It is a simple program to get a handle on. The control output has been reduced to make it as easy as possible for children to understand.
Flash
Adobe Flash has been around a while in various different forms. It has the advantage of being simple to use, but lacks some tools that really would benefit designers and animators. This explains the reason Flash fails to get recognition from most of the top animators. A bit pricey and not ideal for cartoon animation.
After Effects Although primarily used for compositing and effects, the software can create animation. But to simply use this for animation only would be a waste as it is expensive, however it does deserve to be on the list as it can be used for animation.
Pencil Pencil is an animation program that allows both vector and bitmap drawings. It's as though Photoshops drawing tools were incorporated into Flash. The software here has been reduced to provide essential elements, which means that it is an excellent introduction to animation software.
Synfig The designers of Windows only Synfig have high expectations for their animation software to be used to create animations of cinematic quality. After seeing an impressive demo, it looks as though they are not far from their target. Synfig can create complex lighting and camera effects. As the animator it is your responsibility to use them to their maximum potential.
CreaToon Again here is another animation windows only program using a cutout method similar to animation software Toon Boom. The program does seems a little less refined, but with the added ability of using bitmap images in the program, does make life easier.
Toon Boom Digital Pro As software animation goes, Toon Boom Digital Pro is aimed strictly at professionals, as its price indicates. It has the proof to back it up. A comprehensive list includes TV and movies created with Toon Boom Digital Pro. Internet gurus Bernard Derriman and Adam Phillips make use of this animation software.
Toon Boom Studio Express This simplified version of Toon Boom Studio is an animation software program suitable for beginners. It has limits in that only a single scene can be created at a time. However you can simply choose to purchase Express and upgrade later to Studio should you need it.
SWiSH SWiSH was originally created to take full of the open.Swf Flash format. Initially billed as a cheaper alternative to Flash, SWiSH is now a reliable Windows-only text software animation package in its own right. It allows you to readily create splendid swooping effects and then export them.
Ulead Gif Animator GIF animator is really old school. Gif animations generally are almost extinct on the Web as Flash and DSL speeds have become nearly universal. It is a Windows application and does not work under Vista. This is one animation program that will make you want to party like it was 1999.
TV Paint TV paint was a solid software animation program so when it purchased the Mirage name, they combined the two packages into one program and called it TV paint. To many animators this was a good move. TV paint is a solid design level software for animation and has a professional version also.
Plastic Animation Paper Denmark brings us the next exhilarating animation program. Plastic Animation Paper is intended as a substitute for a traditional light box/paper combo animation. It's currently available for Windows and Linux, but they are working diligently on a Mac version. You can try a free version, and of course there is a professional version.
Motion Studio This is a funky Windows-only program designed to only create.exe file types. It could be useful for slideshow presentations or display in a loop, but the animation aspect is quite limited.
Pro Motion Pro Motion is an animation program for Windows only designed for handling close-up pixel. This makes it the perfect software to build sprite-based characters similar to those in video games.

Evaluation - No Evil
Animation
When creating my animation only a few of my ideas changed, however the outcome was completely different to what I first envisioned. When this project was first given to us, I wanted an animation of a door sliding open after being unlocked with a key. After realising how much work we actually had to do for the project, I lost perspective when it came to creating the animation. I had no idea where to start, how to make it, or what length I wanted it. Now I have an animation of a key turn that is a few seconds long. I made this animation so small in the end because I wanted to insert it into my actual game after the final level, however programme restrictions wouldn’t allow me to. I never wanted sound in my animation, so I kept that idea, along with the idea of having a smooth animation rather than a jumpy one.
In the production time of my animation I realised just how difficult it can be to work with time restraints. I know for the next project that I need to set myself realistic goals. Planning is also essential! I created a short storyboard just laying out my final animation idea, however I will plan in more detail next time. When trying to create imagery for my animation I experimented with Adobe Photoshop. I know that this will help me to create logos and images in the next project.
Interactive Graphic Novel
My graphic novel is where I hit the most boundaries. After creating a very detailed plan, including a storyboard with annotated sketches, I managed to misplace it. This has taught me that for the next project I need to keep myself a bit more organised.
Since the beginning of the project I wanted to create a physical book with paper, rather than something on the computer. I thought that this would be different and display my creativity. However, without my storyboards I struggled to retell the story I wanted. Therefore, instead of making a ‘choose your own path’ book, I created a flipbook. This was more fitting for my young target audience and it showed something different that I didn’t think many other people would have done. Instead of just having turning pages, my book is now more interactive as you can pull tabs and wiggle keys in the locks.
While making this novel, I learned that persistence is vital. When making a flipbook from scratch it doesn’t always come out right the first time. It took 4 tries to make the book look like it does now. Next project I must remember not to give up, I should just keep on trying. I shall also remember to plan in great detail and not lose the said plans.
Game
My game was the part of this project that I cared about the most. I wanted to have a good game in case all else failed, what with my missing storyboards and bad drawings. In the early development stages of my game, I wanted gates that opened with certain keys, and some trick doors that would not open at all. The fun element of my game is something that I am very proud of and that I hope I can carry on to the next project.
The main reason my game is different to my other creations is because it has audio. In the background of the game you can hear water droplets, these are meant to display the dampness and eeriness of the setting the player is in. When creating my audio I had more sounds lined up, however when recording them I did not notice a lot of background noise and some distortion from where the levels were slightly too high. I managed to save the water droplets by toning down the volume using Adobe Audition. I planned to also have footsteps and key clinging sounds, but they were unusable unfortunately. When I got them into Game Maker they sounded even more distorted and broken.
Meanwhile, something that didn’t change from my original plans for the game was the art style – pixel. I used Piskel to make plenty of sprites that all made it into the game. The only visual thing that changed was the terrain on the floor of my levels. I designed a brick floor, but it looked unrealistic, so I changed it for a cobblestone type of look. My controls also stayed the same, starting with WASD and then switching to arrow keys, and eventually inverting them.
Creating the game gave me skills with Game Maker Studio, which will help me in the next project because I am using it again to create a game. I should remember top have patience when trying out new code or features as they don’t always work first time. I will also do more research into existing games next time as it will help with finding new ways to implement interactivity for the player.
