Miranda Spatula and Nowhere Flower — Around and About You (Post-Present Medium)
“Oak Parks” is an entropic blues, its sweet, heart-tugging hook corroded by murk and echo, the slash and clamor of guitars paced by a slack-gaited drum machine. Fuzzy, sleepy, faintly dissonant vocals slip and slide over the melody. Consider it an acoustic, home-spun version of Bardo Pond’s most shamanic moments, or a Linda Smith cassette left to warp in the afternoon sun. This new collaboration between long-time Dusted favorite Miranda Spatula and her West Coast sometime bandmate Lila Jarzombek is beautifully, dizzyingly unstrung.
Miranda Spatula is much loved around here for her rough but charming work with the Spatulas. Lila Jarzombek sometimes plays guitar in Spatulas, but her primary project is Nowhere Flower, a low-fi guitar and beat machine ditties. The two worked together on this project, collaborating both in person and via digital exchange, making songs that sometimes turn into drones and drones that equally tend to coalesce into songs.
Some of the cuts are relatively well-behaved lo-fi pop songs, as, for instance, the rambling title track, which strums and bashes around a thready murmur with a wild squall of middle eastern woodwinds going off in the background. Pitched somewhere between the Jeannine’s gem-like garage pop and the Shaggs’ self-taught anarchy, the cut is raw and dream-like, but very much a song. There’s a bit of early VU in these trance-y sounds, a use of dissonance and overhanging tones to suggest a pathway to transcendence. “Riffs” especially howls with a Velvet-y way, letting the guitar wind sinuously through shadowy realms of hiss and moan.
Two late album cuts, titled “Art, Dance, Movement” parts I and II, sink further into third-eye reveries. The first one floats a buzzy long note under muttered spoken word, the poetry almost swamped under the drone. The second slows down mystic, psychedelic guitar to a crawl, a vocal melody careening and eddying within its molasses-slow arrangement. It falls apart in the most beautiful way, dissolving into a pool of sensation that shimmers like the rainbows in a puddle of motor oil.

"Open Your Heart" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Madonna for her third studio album True Blue (1986). Written by Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson, it was conceived as a rock and roll tune titled "Follow Your Heart" for singer Cyndi Lauper, but they never had the chance to play it for her. At the time, Cole's management was working with Madonna's, who were looking for material for her new album. Madonna liked it and, alongside her producer Patrick Leonard, turned it into a dance song.
The single was released in December 1986 and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 51, the highest-debuting single of the year. It would climb to #1 and became Madonna's fifth chart topper.
The music video for "Open Your Heart" was initially going to be directed by Madonna's husband Sean Penn; when he got too busy, Jean-Baptiste Mondino stepped in. Madonna plays an exotic dancer at a peep show who befriends a young boy, played by child actor Felix Howard. The peep show was Mondino's idea since, at that time, "we were into a period where we were experimenting [with] some kind of freedom about the body, about sexuality and stuff". Despite generally positive reception, the video caused controversy; some feminist groups accused Madonna of "setting back history", and reproached her for promoting the return of bustiers and corsets. Writer Susan Bardo chastised the "leering and pathetic" men in the cubicles, and referred to the ending sequence, in which the singer and Howard escape together as "pervy" and "crossing the line into child rape fantasies [or] pornography". Ilene Rosenzweig called out Madonna for "lasciviously" kissing young Howard in the video.

hi! i wrote on from donnie’s part of the trading places thing!! its not accurate because i can’t remember the movie clearly-
———
Donnie felt like his world had become the third Snowball Earth. Everything froze over, frost so sharp and thin that it didn’t feel real. The veil hung over everything.
Your words echoed again in his mind.
Donnie wasn’t one to cry, but that expectation broke when sobs broke him, curling up in the dusty crater he planned to spend the rest of his life in. The rest of that life without you.
Everyone could feel it sink in when Donnie fell. It hit everyone. Leo silently patched up Raph.
Nobody even noticed when Mikey stood.
“I’m not… I’m not letting you go…” He mumbled to the empty space before him with a sniff, regaining himself.
“You never gave up on us…”
Michelangelo raised his arms, his fingers just visible above his shell from the back. The air was sucked free of oxygen, and nobody dared to breathe as they watched the box turtle.
“I’m not giving up on you!” His voice broke going into it, but it only strengthened his last words. His body seemed to crackle with energy- no, it did crackle with energy. He was a conduit as it dug and slashed at his arms. But against all hope, something began to form in front of him.
He was yelling with effort as he pushed himself, cutting through the fabric of spacetime itself. He was aglow with power. But as impressive as it was, it was tearing at him.
Donnie was up before anyone else, a glimmer of hope in his previously dead eyes. Both hands landed on Mikey’s shell, clutching it for dear life.
Upon seeing the two younger, Raph tried to stand, but Leo forced him down, his signature medic glare shaming the snapper.
“Please… please…” Donnie muttered, his own arms on fire as he felt something inside him flow to reach you. Mikey let out a sound between a yell and a scream as the portal was thrust open.
The scene spread out to show a void, empty of all hope. A small figure drifted toward them until your broken body began to come into view. Your eyes only opened halfway, and instinctively you reached toward the portal as one would approach the hypothetical pearly gates or your next life or Bardo, anything that would leave hope for an afterlife.
Donnie reached through quickly, even before he noticed the other figure entering view. Krang Prime’s stare was something that would make anyone falter from snatching up the greatest riches. But you were more than that.
He summoned his bō, not noticing the fire in his hand that weakened his grasp. He tugged, tears in his eyes with effort, and-
He could see the whites of Krang Prime’s eyes when the window shut, and he fell back. The world took time to come into view. He was crying again as he clutched your form. But this was a different kind.
Donnie’s world became that of a spring after the longest of winters, and the grass below him cushioned you. He didn’t even notice the blood, your panting breath. He wasn’t typically one to cry, anyway.

writing prompts: songs from my "challenge: make a weird playlist without any lord huron" playlist. song credits under the cut
here's the van and here's the key / on the seat is the map to tell you where to find me
where am i to go, now that i've gone too far?
i pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then i followed it in / i watched myself crawling out as i was crawling in
i'm living somewhere in a new dimension / i'm leaving everyone so far behind
now please don't let me down / ain't no lover like me in town
there's a rider on the road / there's calamity a-waiting to unfold
gas up with a credit card and an alias that i learned this morning / […] "no receipt please"
there's more than one way to get your freedom
you said "come with me boy, i want to show you something more"
and then i seem to hear her voice from the past: "remember darling, have faith in me; my love will last for all eternity"
what never dies, it can't get old / […] what never comes can't be foretold
in the dream house i'm alone with my fingers on the walls / searching for the door that leads to you
i've been thinking it's a peaceful way to go / […] there is something calling me from down below
would they forgive me if i left them, just to see your face?
they used to laugh and dance here / until the spell was cast
we will meet, someday soon / it will terrify you
i want to know what they know
i've been going down some strange water
that was the ghost - cheyenne
twilight zone - golden earring

just watched chikhai bardo for the THIRD time and I have to say. y’all. that was NOT a subversion of the dead wife trope that was quite literally playing into it. what do we really know about Gemma besides that she was a professor of russian literature, she and mark had fertility issues, and that she’s his (not dead) wife? Like we literally did not get enough information from that episode for it to be a subversion. does she have any other family? how did she grow up? Who are her parents? why russian literature (that’s fascinating tell me more!!)?? who are her friends, did she have any besides mark’s sister and brother in law? why did she want to have a kid so badly? I just hope that we get more of her motivations and personality in s3 apart from mark bc otherwise she literally is just the Dead Wife whose death serves the plot of the male hero’s Quest and not much else. Like really guys raise your standards!!!
#like I get that they can’t give us all this info they have to be strategic and work within a budget#and I am hoping that the infertility thing has bigger ramifications next season because if it doesn’t#and that’s just all we know about her and their marriage#Then that’s absolutely cliche and reducing her to a very tired Woman Motive#I loved that they shot on film aesthetically I think it was beautiful#but even that gives the ep such a ‘dead wife running on the beach and laughing under the sheets’ kind of vibe#and actually I did think they had good chemistry like during their first meeting I Felt It#but we go from their first meeting to a brief interaction when they’re first dating STRAIGHT into them being married and trying for a kid?#go girl give us nothing
