I spent my formative years at a private Catholic school. There are many traditions, but this place has reminded me of one I liked the least. Stations of the Cross, something we performed every tear to “show our faith” as if we didn’t already do that when we attended mandatory mass every Friday morning before class. But when we performed the Stations, we didn’t just read from the book and recite the prayers; we were required to dress up and literally act them out. Even back then, I was a big guy. I was taller and bigger than almost all of the kids, even the ones in higher grades than me. So I was always forced to play Jesus, which meant carrying the cross. And despite the fact we were children, they made us carry an actual cross made of wood. Not balsa, not pine, but a solid heavy oak cross. At the time I didn’t say anything, because a god Catholic keeps quiet, but it was the worst. I do not look fondly back on those days, but in a strange way they did prepare me for the burden of mental illness I’d walk through in life. So I guess, in the weirdest way possible, I’m thankful for the suffering I experienced at the hands of Catholic school. In 1923 Friar Ambrose Mayer, a pastor of the servite order, made a down payment of 3,000 dollars for 62 acres of land, in North East Portland, near the Columbia River, which included a 110 foot high basalt cliff. Friar Mayer envisioned The Grotto as a natural cathedral where people could worship in the great outdoors.
