The Jewish family stitching for the King

A family of Jewish tailors will see their work feature heavily in King Charles III’s coronation procession — and on the King himself.  Their firm, Kashket & Partners, is the main supplier of ceremonial outfits for Britain’s armed forces. It also has a special history with the royal family.  Chief executive Russell Kashket created the uniform worn by Prince William at his wedding. 

Now new BBC documentary Coronation Tailors: Fit for a King will take the cameras into the Tottenham factory where items for the King — secret until the day itself — as well as 6,000 other uniforms are being made for the coronation by the firm’s small army of tailors.

UK: Hundreds contact JLM's new Antisemitism Monitoring Centre about Jew-hate in Corbyn's Labour

A new Antisemitism Monitoring Centre set up by the Jewish Labour Movement to record and process complaints relating to Jew-hate within Jeremy Corbyn’s party has received nearly 500 submissions just a week after it was launched. An email sent by JLM to its 2,000 members suggested there was a urgent need for the service because the Labour Party had allowed complaints of antisemitism to be “dismissed when reported, obfuscated when they entered the national press, and dragged on because that was politically easier”. The launch of the centre – which is accessible to all Labour members regardless of whether or not they subscribe to JLM – will allow the organisation to build up a clear picture of what is happening across all areas of Mr Corbyn’s party. The move comes amid fears that Labour’s own compliance unit, which is meant to investigate allegations of inappropriate conduct, is now operating on threadbare staffing levels following several departures in recent months. The request to hear experiences of antisemitism in Labour is directed at either “victim or third-party observer” according to the email and JLM website. The group is also keen to learn of alleged instances of antisemitism from both Jewish and non-Jewish members of the Labour Party.

Investigators probe Jersey City attack as ‘domestic terrorism’

A deadly attack on a kosher market in New Jersey is being investigated as “domestic terrorism” fuelled by “fuelled both by anti-Semitism and anti-law enforcement beliefs”, the state’s top prosecutor said on Thursday. 

Tuesday’s attack, which culminated in a four-hour standoff with authorities at theJC Kosher Supermarket in Jersey City, left three civilians and one police officer dead.

Youngster was hit on the head with a spade outside a synagogue in Hamburg

A Jewish student was taken to hospital after repeatedly being struck on the head with a spade by a man outside a synagogue on Hamburg on the second day of Succot.

The assault came a year after a gunman killed two people in an attempted attack on the synagogue in Halle, Germany, on Yom  Kippur.

While some media outlets said the victim was male, the English-language site The Local reported it was a 26-year-old woman.

The student was said to have sustained significant injuries and was given first aid by passers-by before being taken to hospital.

Police guarding the Hode Weide Synagogue arrested a 29-year-old man wearing a military-style uniform. A piece of paper with a swastika was found in a trouser pocket, according to the news agency DPA.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas condemned the attack as “repugnant antisemitism”.

Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, said he was saddened to learn that a German Jewish community was again “confronting a violent attack of terror”.

He added, “While thankfully, police on the scene acted quickly to stop the attacker from committing further violence, the security presence was not enough to deter this attacker from gravely injuring someone.

“We must ask ourselves, and German local and national authorities must address the question – why does this keep happening? Why is antisemitism thriving, and why does anyone believe there is room for such hate?”

The Halle attack took place on October 9 last year when a gunman, after failing to force entry into a synagogue, shot and killed a passer-by and then a man in a nearby kebab shop.

The chair of Jewish Voice For Labour has sparked fury by comparing the internationally recognised definition of antisemitism to controversial 1980s legislation that banned promoting homosexuality in schools. Speaking at Wednesday's meeting of Finchley and Golders Green Labour Party, Jenny Manson claimed the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition prevented support for Palestinians, in the same way Section 28 prevented support for gay pupils. The comments infuriated many in the room. Jack Lubner, 17, was said to have been left "upset and intimidated" after Ms Mason strode towards him after he said he objected to her remarks. He tweeted: "Jenny should be ashamed of herself. How dare she." Local Labour member Luisa Attfield, tweeted: "As a Jewish lesbian I am offended and as person with a brain its a baseless comparison." JVL, a pro-Jeremy Corbyn group founded in September 2017, has backed a campaign to support the new antisemitism guidelines Labour's national body approved, which omit key examples from the IHRA Jew-hate definition about how criticising Israel can be antisemitic. The issue has caused huge outrage among the Jewish community.
