Being invited to sit with Remus - and company - by James had to be the highlight of Dee’s day so far. Of course, leaving for school was always fun, but he had left his muggle parents behind at the entrance to King’s Cross and found his way to the platform by himself. It wasn’t that Deaglán was ashamed to be muggle-born but he didn’t want the pureblood brats to say anything to them that his parents either wouldn’t understand, or would worry about. He had run into James on the platform after saying goodbye to his parents, and followed the boy to a compartment that all of James’ friends were already in. “Hi everybody!” He squeaked in his soft Irish lilt, “Hi Remus,” Deaglán followed up with. His friend looked like absolute shit and that hurt his heart, Remus was the prettiest boy in Dee’s eyes anyway, but it had to mean something was wrong. “Are you ok? You look like you need a nap.”

After Remus had woken up, Dee waved him off to go back to the compartment with his friends, he would meet up with him in a minute. Then he made some comment about needing to pee and that seemed to do the trick. Except, the minute the door closed behind Remus, Deaglán curled himself into a ball and pressed as hard against the wall as he could. The tips of his fingers felt like they were tingling and his stomach was in absolute knots. If he could take back most of the last few hours he could. The whole talk with Remus, then James, then Peter, then, then, then, people just kept coming. People that didn’t care about him, just the boy sleeping on his leg. He should have kept his mouth shut, shouldn’t have gotten his hopes up, none of it.
In the depths of his anxiety, Deaglán never heard the compartment door open or a voice directed at him. He could only feel the tears threatening his eyes and the gentle quaking of his hands. It wasn’t until he caught the form of a person out of the corner of his eye that he jumped and looked up. “I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you come in. Can I help you?” The form was still blurry through Dee’s tears, so he didn’t know who it was.

Deaglán really shouldn’t have been surprised at the sheer number of people that were stopping in to check on Remus, but he was. James and Helena had already stopped in, so Dee figured it was only a matter of time before Sirius, Lily, or Peter came in. So, when the door to the compartment opened again and Peter stepped in, Dee hardly reacted. “Hi,” he murmured, his voice soft so that Remus would stay asleep. Their mutual friend had been asleep for about an hour now, since before the train departed, but Dee wanted to extend that for as long as possible. Soon, Remus would have to leave for a prefect meeting, which didn’t seem fair to Dee. “I suppose you’re comin’ in ta’ check on him?” The muggleborn asked. “He’s lucky ta’ ‘ave friends like you guys.”
