THEMONK ZOSIMA, BISHOP OF NEW BABYLON (Egypt_6th.c)
Tumblr media
The Monk Zosima, Bishop of Babylon, was born in Cilicia (Asia Minor). While still a youth he left the world and settled on Mount Sinai, and later he withdrew to a more solitary place in Lebanon. One time he encountered an elderly ascetic, who foretold that he would be bishop in Babylon. When Zosima returned to Sinai, he was sent on an errand to Alexandria. The Alexandrian Patriarch made him bishop of Babylon, and into old age he wisely guided his flock. Sensing the approach of death, he returned to Sinai and there peacefully expired to God (V Century).
VENERABLE METHODIUS, ABBOT OF PESHNOSKA(1392)
Tumblr media
Saint Methodius, Igumen of Peshnosha was the founder of the Peshnosha monastery. In his youth he went to Saint Sergius of Radonezh and spent several years under his guidance. Later on, with the blessing of Saint Sergius, he withdrew to a solitary place and built himself a cell in the forest beyond the River Yakhroma. Soon several disciples came to him in this marshy place, wishing to imitate his life. Saint Sergius visited him and advised him to build a monastery and church. Saint Methodius himself toiled at the construction of the church and the cells, “on foot carrying” wood along the river, and from that time the monastery began to be called “the Peshnosha.”
In 1391 Saint Methodius became igumen of this monastery. At times he withdrew two versts from the monastery and struggled in prayer. Here also Saint Sergius came to him for spiritual conversation, therefore this spot became known as “Beseda” (“Conversation-place”).
Saint Methodius died in 1392 and was buried at the monastery he founded. A church dedicated to Saints Sergius of Radonezh and Methodius of Peshnosha was built over his relics in 1732. The beginning of his local veneration dates from the late seventeenth—early eighteenth centuries.

Romans 4:4-12
4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. 5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: 7 Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; 8 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD shall not impute sin." 9 Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised.
Matthew 7:15-21
15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them. 21 Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the British-born mega-talented multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter John Ford. He’s best-known in America for his lead role in their singles “Lay Down” and “Part of The Union” and for the New Wave band The Monks—also look up the band Hudson Ford, who made a string of brilliant albums in the 70s. As a hired gun John has worked with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Roy Harper, Jimi Hendrix, King Crimson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana, Steppenwolf, Rick Wakeman, Frank Zappa, and many others, and in recent years he’s collaborated with Ian Lloyd of Stories. I’ve become of fan of every recording I’ve heard that John was involved in, and for years I’ve been taken with his song “Heavy Disguise,” a song for when politics encroach on people of faith. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JI5r_8AbKs The lyrics came from his observations while attending political meetings, a bit bittersweet but forthtelling, and with a jovial set of chords and melody. I heard the song when it was new (on the Strawbs GRAVE NEW WORLD LP). I always enjoyed singing it, but I couldn’t master the guitar part until recently, so here it is, live in our parlor. Meanwhile, HB JF and thank you for your years of fantastic giving of your talents.

Il monaco di Matthew Lewis
Tumblr media

14th or the 16th May 1818, death of English novelist Matthew Gregory Lewis, often referred to as "Monk" Lewis, due to his Gothic horror story ‘The Monk’, which was published in 1796, and was influenced by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, published in 1794. ‘The Monk’ brought Lewis immediate literary success, condemnation due to some of its immoral content, and accolades from Lord Byron, and the Marquis de Sade. In the summer of 1816 Lewis visited Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and Mary Shelley at the Villa Diodati in Geneva, Switzerland, and recounted five ghost stories to the gathering. Percy Shelley had read and been influenced by ‘The Monk’, as a young man, writing his own Gothic novel, ‘Zastrozzi’ in 1810. All books shown contain a reproduction of the original title page with added original illustration influenced by the story. They are made from actual salvaged antique books, with the pages fixed in place so that they can be hung on a wall for a unique display. From the 1st to the 18th, read this classic Gothic novel! Shocking and entertaining audiences, this scandalous story certainly entertained me! The Monk by Matthew Lewis was marvellously melodramatic! #TheMonk #MatthewLewis
