I hope you don’t mind me jumping on, I just gotta gush about my boy, Gef!!

There was one man who reported seeing his thrown away sandwich being carried away by an invisible force and a reporter claimed he heard Mrs. Irving and Gef talking to each other.

Investigators did want to interview the daughter, Voirrey, alone but understandably, her father wasn’t comfortable with his 13 year old daughter alone in a room with men he didn’t know.

The only picture of Gef is a blurry one and it could easily be any furry thing on a post so it doesn’t lend much credence to his existence.

Margaret (Mrs. Irving) claimed to be able to pet Gef as when she put her fingers into his sanctum (a small space up by the ceiling), she felt his fur and he’d lick her fingers.

Mr. Irving also claimed to have many conversations with Gef and took to calling him “my lad”. His justification for Gef’s existence is that no one would ever invent such a silly story. He also never charged anyone to come to his property and in fact lost money because of all the damage sightseers caused to the land.

When the Irvings did try to submit samples of Gef’s hair, it ended up belonging to the family dog.

If Gef is indeed a hoax then Voirrey had exceptional talent as a ventriloquist and the family, perhaps bored, went along with it.

However, Mr. Irving’s oldest daughter claimed to hear Gef as her father was dying, as if Gef came to say goodbye.

This may sound daft but since i am aware you know a lot about it, is the Gef the Mongoose case real or was it just a hoax? /genq

Well there has been news articles on him in the 30s and people did report missing rabbits in think? There also has been an interview w him. But other than the information provided by the irvings there is no real evidence, tho after the family left the farm house and a new person moved in she reported having cached a weasel looking creature ( that she killed ) ( that was as 1945 tho, so its been a few years since the irvings left) and thats the last thing we know from, what might have been, gef the mongoose

the only one to ever actually see gef was monica ( ? The daughter | i forgot her name) but there’s no actual pictures of him i think, only drawings.

But its still debated whether it was real or not

Do you have any descriptions that people used for Gef? I know people said he was yellowish-tan and striped + very different from a normal mongoose, but I'm not sure where to find more on how people described him

(I just want to correctly draw him, and you need like the type of person to know this knowledge LOL)

Ahhh that’s kinda what I know about him too.

I’ve seen others that describe him as

Rat-like

Bushy tail

Yellowish fur

Speckled with brown spots

Pig faced

The last one was what led people to believe Gef was a mongoose when they were still trying to figure out what he was

Honestly, you can draw Gef any which way!! He’s been rumored to simply be a being from another dimension who chose to take the form of a mongoose so people wouldn’t be afraid of him.

He’s whatever you want to be at the end of the day!!

Did Jeff ever mention anything about hunting snakes? Are there even any snakes (natively) found on the Isle of Man?

From the actual website of the Isle of Man tourism, it seems there are no snakes or even frogs (and toads???) on the island.

However they apparently have a native lizard that’s the most common one found throughout the UK.

As far as I have seen and researched, Gef never hunted wildlife beyond rabbits, which instead of having animal bite marks and such, seemed to have died due to strangulation…by very small hands….

(Sorry if you're not allowing asks, you don't have to answer this + hopefully this question actually makes sense T_T) Are there any stories of Gef from the other citizens on the Isle of Man that you can find? I'm interested in how the other people in the area would view him ^_^ (like stories that people other than the Irvings have of him)

Ahhh I’m always open to asks!

I know of a couple of incidents:

A man who was working outside threw his bread crust on the ground and he saw it being carried away by an unseen force, so he attributed that to Gef.

A few townsfolk also said they could hear Gef talking behind bushes as the Irvings went to market, but they never saw him.

Voirrey was never interviewed by herself as her father understandably was not comfortable with his teenage daughter being alone in a room with men that were strangers.

An interviewer did say he heard Voirrey making noises but Jim then distracted him elsewhere in the house.

Despite all his mischief, Gef was known to be helpful to the Irvings as well.

Some of his good deeds were waking the family if they overslept, alerting them if someone was approaching the house, and putting out the fire in the stove if it had been mistakenly left on.

The Irvings claimed that Gef would often accompany them to market but he would stay on the other side of the hedges where he could not be seen.

However, he would keep up his nonstop chatter that only seldom would say they could hear.

There is some speculation that Gef didn’t harm the Irvings beyond his pranks because he was “created” in a loving, nurturing environment.

If the Irving household had been toxic and hostile, Gef may have developed a sinister personality and lashed out as such.

Some of Gef’s most distinctive features were his yellowish fur, bushy tail and human-like hands.

The last reported sighting of Gef was in 1939.

However, according to the Irvings he made at least two more appearances before disappearing for good.
