So I h'ave posted a bit about it, but I'm making my thesis film on weaver ants, so enjoy their final design !

In green is the "main character" of my short film, inspired by green weaver ants, to differentiate her from her peers !

What I know for sure is that I really don’t like thesis projects (or projects in general) about the artist themselves, their childhood (vomit emoji), their family (laughing emoji), their hometowns (raised eyebrow emoji), their daily lives (bored emoji), their trauma (confused emoji). If you were to explore your life in a project, focus on one thing, let’s say all of the times you were sexually and physically assaulted, cat-called and blah blah blah, and then add some magic into it, add some fucking fantasy. Don’t just focus on yourself in this case, go research all of the types of ways people get assaulted or the craziest assaults of our century. Now pick a theme that resembles all of this. Maybe all of your assaults happened when you were younger, but wait, you were also into animals growing up. What if you paint 5 paintings that show your favourite animals abusing each other in ways that you’ve researched? Maybe there is also something about the animals that you can research, the way they fight with each other and etc. But please, fucking stop making broad-ass projects about your personal life. Who tf wants to see your childhood home and the gate you used to always lean on? Girl, go do something crazy, give us a money shot.

Hey everyone! I’m rather new to the Naruto fandom, and I’m looking for some input. [SORRY this is a text-heavy post!]

TL;DR: I need ideas for interesting things about Naruto and Naruto Shippuden to analyze!

I’m a first year graduate student, working towards a Master’s in media analysis. I have an extensive background in multiple different forms of media; however, I have two degrees in animation, so that’s the medium I want to focus on analyzing.

I’m currently formulating my thesis proposal, which is going to be a comparative analysis of epic literature to animated television. My professor recommended I write about anime, because it would be more interesting to read. I’m choosing to analyze Naruto because I know there will be a lot to talk about.

I’ve been tasked with analyzing a few different important or interesting things that happen in the show. Right now I’m only looking at Naruto and Shippuden, and not Boruto because I haven’t seen much of it!

So!! As, I said, I would like some input from other fans for what you all think would be interesting to write about. It can be about any character, storyline, and can be small, even recurring moments or big things that carry throughout the entire series.

I have a few ideas right now, such as Naruto being a literal ray of sunshine who talks his opponents down from murder, how rivalries carry through generations, and the importance of the number 3. My current task does not need to relate to ‘epic moments’ specifically - I’m looking for a variety of things to look into, either now or in the future.

Building out the Pitchvisualization, the Learning Arc

So production for the pitchvis for my thesis officially began last week, and in the ensuing seven days I’ve spent whatever free time I have not doing schoolwork trying to get progress building it out.

One or two of my peers believed that since I had no script or creative idea but had the understanding of what I wanted to demonstrate with technical skills, I had no project, and I agree with that.

So the next day I built out a storyboard when I had a bit of free time by drawing with my mouse.

It was a terrible start of course, as I wanted it to be short but demonstrate my ability to create these environments and utilize motion capture all in one.

In the meantime my comp sci major roommate suggested that I build a Gant Chart to track my progress for my thesis project. So I did.

I know I’m a storyteller and so far this isn’t amazing and compelling storytelling to showcase my progress, but sometimes breaking storytelling norms is in itself a form of storytelling, so yeah, I’m not lazy I’m just breaking norms.

Anyways afterwards I realized my script sucked, so I listened to some music. And I realized that I kind of liked creating narratives for the music as I listened to it, and I know I’m not quirky or unique for doing that but it kind of gave me an idea for a script. So I wrote one.

Anyways now that I had a script, it’s time to build out the short film, normally you’d think the first thing I do is make some cool environments and materials since that’s literally what my technical demonstration was supposed to be about right?

Well since I wrote that question out obviously no, I went to get motion capture first. Not because that was the first thing I wanted to put in (but also yes I wanted to first build out a rough frame), but also because I have VERY LITTLE experience using Motive (the software that links up with the Optitrack cameras and captures the motion) and I’ve never even touched Autodesk Motionbuilder in my life. 

So I went with my girlfriend and we (just me) spent four hours trying to learn the entire pipeline from Motive to Motionbuilder (to clean up mocap and attach it to the model skeleton) to Unreal Engine. 

Also I built out the first few scenes of my new script, this time drawing with an actual proper drawing tablet that I got in 2019 as a high school graduation gift. 

You can see how much more detail and care was put into the drawings (kinda not joking). Unfortunately we didn’t get much motion capture done since the previous user of the mocap gloves didn’t charge them and also I spent 3 hours learning the pipeline of bringing the motion capture to Unreal, but now that I got that down the rest of production should go pretty smoothly. 

Right now I have two levels of completion I’m prepared to aim for because I’m not 100% sure how much I can do in a week. Level one is just motion capture and basic cubes, lighting, and camera moves. Level two is replace cubes with actual buildings and props.

The committee approved my #thesisproject. HOWEVER... they want me to expand my view from just West Dennis and The Columns. Since I was focused on the importance of #restoration and #rehabilitation of historically and culturally relevant structures, I am expanding it to look at the different directions the Main Streets of Dennis and Yarmouth have experienced. This will look at Old Main Street in #BassRiver in South Yarmouth and the parallel stretch of Rt. 28. In Dennis, I will work up from Main Street in West Dennis into South Dennis in comparison to Rt 134. Restoration is often a better driver for #aestetic and #qualityoflife reasons. New development creates jobs and revenue that rehabbing old buildings cannot match. So which is more important, jobs or quality of life?
