in jay shetty’s book think like a monk he says:
“fear not the man who has done 10,000 kicks once, but the man who has done one kick ten thousand times”
and sorry but i am absolutely horrified of the innovative psycho who has invented TEN THOUSAND different kicks and done them all like one time. someone with discipline is intimidating but that’s crazy on an astronomically higher level.
another L for ppl who like jay shetty

2025 January Reviews
Wicked (2024): 4 star movie; Overall an enjoyable movie. It's held back by scenes running just a lttle too long despite being good scenes. It also has the opposite problem where it feels like character relationship scenes were cut.
Eyes of Laura Mars (1978): 4 star movie; Faye Dunaway gives a spectacular performance as a photographer who starts having psychic visions of murders right before they happen. Stylish visuals and skilled directing make it an engaging watch.
M is for Monster (Talia Dutton, 2022): 4 star book; A scientist attempts to reanimate her dead sister but while the body is revived, the personality is a fundamentally new person. Afraid that admitting that will get her killed and rebuilt, M attempts to go along with the lie with the help of the ghost of the dead sister's help. A pretty art style with a compelling story but odd pacing.
Deemo Memorial Keys (2021): 3 star movie; A pretty and musically beautiful movie but the narrative is a little disconnected, especially between the real world compared to the dream world.
Think Like a Monk (Jay Shetty, 2020): Nonfiction book; Talks about incorporating Buddhism into his daily life.

can't get over how fucked up and weird nahyuta is... like i don't mean in the surface-level haha "what's crack-a-lackin homie" way, i mean this kid who grew up on the run as essentially a wanted criminal, who got separated from his brother in the middle of his childhood, throwing himself into monk training and religion to find some semblance of peace and meaning to his suffering, only to end up tortured and held hostage by his own aunt and having years worth of blood on his hands from all the people he sent to their deaths... helpless and drowning with his sole hope being that dhurke would save him, then finding out that dhurke was already dead and he'd lost his chance to ever reconcile... and not wanting to lose apollo on top of it too, but not able to bring himself to sacrifice rayfa for it!! watching his mother get shot in front of his eyes!! his family members all being used against each other as chess pieces to control him!!! and there's nothing he can do!!!!
and like even just as a person the way he's so down to just infodump about whatever he's been researching and how his interest in science alongside his deep spirituality complements his partnership with ema, who he is way nicer to than literally any other prosecutor ever treats their detective, he's so weird and curious and genuinely sweet under the cruel façade... he is so much. can't get over how he's a prosecutor AND a monk and even a prince. he's literally the actual prince regent of a country. he's THE androgynous icon. and he's hot!!!

I keep remembering various DW expanded universe material where time lords are compared to Christian priests in different ways and it’s like ????? That is Always on my mind. Always. Time Lordism as religion. As asceticism. As being pure and holier than thou and strict and adherent. As puritanism. As deprivation and isolation and devotion. I am Thinking about it!!!!!!

my knight-monk agenda strikes again, but this was less of a 'I read something that made me experience several emotions and a strike of inspiration at once,' and more of a 'wouldn't it be fucked up if the bejeweled skeleton saints came to life and and started. eating people. or something. in revenge. medieval catholic horror, or an older horror of not being buried right. zombies, even. a complete bastardization of holy visuals. zombies.'
it's a far away idea, but I still wanted to play around with font layouts. like, if I DID make it into a full comic: these would be visual vibes, perhaps.
it's also a little bit about the kind of intimacy that these kinds of spaces provide, or in the case of this monk: the heavy trauma of war and the death of your brother, the escape to a secluded monastery, spiritual brotherhood to make up for your dead brother, but your role as a physician keeps pulling you back to this violence you want to escape. physician, heal thyself, only you have a holy calling to serve those in need, so instead: physician, open up your wounds again. saint jude, patron saint of lost causes, give us a fucking hand here, man. amen.

Homosexuality in the Renaissance: Behavior, Identity, and Artistic Expression, James M. Saslow
and this one is about earlier history than the medieval period that this comic is set in, but the monk character is sort of an exploration of earlier themes. a little bit. I like overlapping eras with each other, I've done it before and I'll do it again. this character is an exploration of some other stuff too, but mostly this book was interesting to read
