'Secret Garden', my new solo exhibition is opening tonight at Thinkspace Projects! Here's a look at the first oil painting also titled 'Secret Garden' that spurred the entire series of this solo.
It took me a while to complete this particular piece because of all that intricate detail around the figure. I first documented the actual background three years ago. It was someone's front entrance to their home which I couldn't really see because of all those trees. I would imagine what their house looked like or who lived in it. I walked by this place too many times and eventually allowed it to creep onto my canvas.
So here's 'Secret Garden', an oil on wood panel that came about from my curiosity and my recapping of fragments from both novels 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Secret Garden'.
If you're in Los Angeles, please check out the exhibition that just officially opened at Thinkspace , snap a picture and tag me if you find this painting 🌿
For folks who won't be able to attend, the online preview of the show is now available at Thinkspace's website or visit link here for easy access.

The Mangrove Refuge (The Vorasane Family and Friends; Gandy Beach circa 1980) by Michael Vasquez was created for the 2023 edition of SHINE Mural Festival in St. Pete, Florida.
The artist’s statement about the mural-
A displaced Lao family (and friends) find refuge and a moment of reflection amidst the mangroves of Tampa Bay’s Gandy Beach.
A 1978 Datsun 280Z serves as a centerpiece and point of pride, fusing together car culture and masculinity. Similar aspects of clothing and style signal togetherness, emulation, and a shared sense of identity—yet their solitary gazes set them apart from one another and allude to a deeper and more personal past, present, and future…
Vasquez is currently part of the group show TRADITIONS: Honoring Heritage, Ritual and Family at Muzeo in Anaheim, California. The show is curated by Thinkspace and Tlaloc Studios and is on view until 2/25/24.
Also check out his Instagram for current work.

In the world of art, inspiration can come from the most unexpected sources. For my latest project, I turned to two artists who have significantly influenced my creative journey. Mary Iverson, a renowned painter and public artist, and Bela Kontuly, the Hungarian master of vibrant colour palettes, might seem like an unlikely pair to blend together. Still, the result is a captivating contrast that allows me to recreate my favorite place in time: the grandeur of the ancient Roman Empire.
Mary Iverson: The Globalisation vs. Environment Clash
Mary Iverson is a painter and public artist known for her thought-provoking works. She passionately portrays the collision between globalisation and the environment. Her art takes us on a surreal journey where container ships collide with national parks, resulting in post-apocalyptic scenarios that challenge our perspective on the world.
Bela Kontuly: The Master of Color
Bela Kontuly, on the other hand, was a Hungarian painter celebrated for his rich and vibrant color palette. His ability to manipulate tone and texture is nothing short of breathtaking. Kontuly's choice of colors, whether bold and vibrant or soft and muted, adds depth and atmosphere to his paintings, making them unforgettable.
The Ancient Roman Empire: My Favorite Place in Time
The ancient Roman Empire, with its monumental architecture, powerful emperors, and intriguing history, has always held a special place in my heart. It's a time of grandeur, complexity, and enduring legacies. To blend Iverson and Kontuly's styles into this historical backdrop is to create a striking juxtaposition.
Marrying the distinct styles of Iverson and Kontuly to portray the Roman Empire is a creative endeavor that comes with its own challenges and opportunities. Iverson's surreal scenarios and Kontuly's vibrant colors may seem like an unlikely pair, but the fusion promises a unique perspective on this iconic era.
The journey from concept to creation was both exciting and intricate. I carefully selected elements from both artists' styles to paint a vivid picture of the Roman Empire. Whether it's the collision of container ships with ancient Roman monuments or the use of vibrant colors to illuminate historical scenes, each stroke on the canvas added depth and nuance.
The fusion of Iverson's surreal scenes and Kontuly's vibrant colours breathes new life into the ancient Roman Empire. The clash between globalisation and environment gains an unexpected but intriguing dimension within this historical context. It's a striking contrast that invites viewers to see the grandeur of the past through a contemporary lens.
In the world of art, boundaries are meant to be pushed. By combining the styles of Mary Iverson and Bela Kontuly, I've unlocked a fresh perspective on the ancient Roman Empire. It's a testament to the power of artistic fusion and the endless possibilities it offers.

8 MERCHANT PLACE
Tumblr media
Laurence Grigorov, who is director of a leading residential property development company, keeps track of new projects and developments all around the globe. This allows Laurence Grigorov to constantly incorporate styles and trends in both architectural and structural design in developments his company is involved in.
Situated at the corner of Rivonia Road and Fredman Drive in Sandton, 8 Merchant Place is the latest addition in an almost 30 year history of intervention on the Merchant Place site.
Architects Boogertman + Partners changed the Sandton skyline at the end of the 1990s when 1 Merchant Place, an 18 storey tower, was completed. The firm have been engaged since then with Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and Eris Property Group as the campus has grown and expanded over the subsequent years.
The brief from the client was to consolidate certa in employee wellbeing offerings into one integrated building. This was primarily driven to start with by a desire to increase the gym size, which was at the time situated in the 9 Fredman Drive building, and to also introduce a EduCentre for use by staff. As the project team began looking at the placement of the new building on the piazza site within the campus, they realised that there was a bigger opportunity to also accommodate the existing Wellness Centre, which would have a synergy with the gym, as well as a new venue that could be used for internal and client events. The new building is a relatively modest architectural insertion size-wise, but will be experientially significant in the day to day activities of staff and visitors. At its core it is a building that ensures that the surrounding campus is utilised to its maximum efficiency by pulling non-core functions out of these and rearranging them into one space. This complex brief is ‘poured’ into the piazza that sits between the existing buildings. The building expresses itself as a series of undulating horizontal planes that hover over the piazza space, with clear glazing in-between to ensure maximum light penetration into the new spaces.
A distinctively reactive architectural language has been developed that sinuously fills the space while using the existing structural grid from the parking basement below. The new structure purposefully contrasts the architecture that is there; its curvaceous shape opening new spatial opportunities between itself and the existing built form. The building uses a minimal palette of external finishes to emphasise its dynamic shape. The clear glazing is framed above and below by a triangular section and pearlescent white aluminium ‘sill’ detail that traces each of the curvilinear slab edges. This is offset by Tyrolean plaster on the minimal solid panels. The new building is an extension of the existing RMB ThinkSpace precinct, a publicly accessible art exhibition space that inhabits the spaces between the buildings at Merchant Place.
