Hillsdale U's new op ed says that military drones should (or must inevitably) be equipped with AI to "make the kinds of decisions that are currently made by soldiers, pilots and command centers". And you thought that it was bad when decisions on whom to kill were made by a desk jockey. Don't we have entire book and movie series explaining why this is a bad idea

Impact - Re-Review #35
“This is going to be a close one.”
“Isn’t it always?”
Hello everyone! So I’d just like to say a massive massive thank you for all the recent comments and reblogs on the Re-Review Series. Being busy with work this week I haven’t had the time I like to reply to everyone, but be aware that I have read every single response and if I haven’t replied to you, it’s not meant unkindly! I’m incredibly grateful for all your support with these, and glad to know you’re enjoying them - it motivates me to continue writing them.
Now, before we dive in with today’s installment - I can’t believe we’re on number 35 already! - I’d like to give a little note on Fanfiction works (which I know have been lacking from me lately!).
So tomorrow there will definitely be one piece to upload, I’m hoping it could extend to three, maybe four, but I’m working on the numbers I can guarantee I can deliver - which is an irrelief2020 prompt that I have loved from the moment I saw it and been desperate to write - so I’m hoping it will be well received! Hopefully I can bring you more works too, but if not, bear with me (like you all are, and I massively appreciate it)! If I can take any good screenshots from my chat with Australia (and the Red Pandas) [which by the time this goes up will only be hours away and I will have been awake from about 3AM UK time) I will throw them up for you all to see as a reward.
Anyhow, back to the Re-Review Series;
It’s EOS! It’s actually EOS, and she’s in the opening shot and we get to see her travelling around Thunderbird Five! I love it so so much. Look at those little red dots of... is that jealousy there, EOS?
“Lucky shot!”
“That wasn’t luck; that was skill.”
“Yes, I’ve studied it in college. It’s supposed to miss Earth by millions of miles.”
“However, it has apparently changed trajectory. And the probably of a collision with Earth is now one hundred percent.”
“What could possibly knock a comment that far off course?”
You’re about to be very sorry that you asked that, I’m afraid, John.
“We have a situation.”
“Uh... you always say that.”
Scott swiping Alan’s feet out of the way is absolutely perfect brotherly interaction once again.
“Something The Mechanic could have done?”
“Good guess, but no.”
“Langstrum FIschler.”
Uh oh... Scott is mad. Scott is very mad. The face said it all.
“Nobody said gear up’s were fair, Virgil.”
So, Alan is on form (as usual) in this episode, and we get to see Virgil’s first trip in Thunderbird Three! This makes sense as we were shown Virgil piloting Three up to Five in TOS ‘Ricochet’.
“Any luck tracking down Fischler?”
“Not yet. That guy changes addresses more than I change socks.”
Um... I don’t know which part of that sentence to be more worried about...
“Hello, this is Langstrum Fischler, inventor and visionary!”
“And this is International Rescue.”
“Ah... Yes... so it is.”
You know what, I’ve been awake for too long now and am a little too tired to sit here and write the essay I would love to write on Fischler and his idiocy and made up names and processes. But I will have to write that another time when I am more able to write something which isn’t a load of prattle. So for now, let me just express my heartfelt feelings that said man is a liability. The epitome of liability even.
“John’s right. We do have a situation.”
As I have said before Alan; we wouldn’t have a show if you didn’t.
“What are our options?”
“We could try to steer the comet away from Earth.”
“Because we’ve seen how well that’s worked for Fischler.”
“Ah, yes, point taken.”
New catch phrase, maybe? FAB and RAD are totally outdated.
“I say we blast it to bits!”
Of course you do, Virgil, seems to be an area of expertise of yours, after all: demolition.
“I’ve loaded up enough demolition charges to do the job.”
“Wait, you put explosives on my ship?”
This is another of those traditional Alan lines that only Alan can ever really get away with saying.
“Alan, you fly a rocket. It’s already an explosive.”
“Point taken.”
I still adore this scene.
“This is Thunderbird Three. That was a rough ride.”
“But thanks to Alan, we’re ok.”
“Which is more than Fischler’s gonna’ be when I’m done with him.”
Yeah... it’s probably a good thing that Scott can only reach Fischler by holographics... the man would have a broken nose else.
“Better you two stay on task and blow up the comet.”
Not everyday we hear that from International Rescue!
“And Fischler’s rocket.”
“Especially Fischler’s rocket!”
Yes, we get it Scott. We get it.
“Meanwhile, I’ll break the news to Global One.”
Which of course happens to be where Ridley is based.
“Ridley, you may want to sit down.”
“Not so easy in zero gravity.”
Does she not know by now that John really struggles with humour and works in a high pressure environment where if he’s calling you, it’s probably because you’re in life-threatening danger.
“Ok, you have my attention.”
“Good, because all of you on Global One are in serious danger.”
“Only the last shuttle was short one seat.”
So, I highly doubt any space based organisation would miss-run a potentially life threatening calculation like that for one.
“Besides I thought you could use a hand with the towing operation.”
“What towing operation?”
“John, I’ve did the calculations. My maneuvering jets aren’t powerful enough to push Global One out of the way in time. So I’m counting on you to save the space station.”
Secondly, that was the whole point of why John told you to leave Global One - there was no plan to rescue something which could be rebuilt. (Yes, I am aware here that the boys often try to rescue their own ships, but emotional attachment is the reason for those calls - I’m well aware Ridley’s call could be put down to the same reasons, but it’s a call that annoys me. One I don’t think a Captain should have made).
“Ridley, I’m not a tow boat Captain. I rescue people.”
“Ok, I’m people. Rescue me.”
So, thirdly, (and I’m aware I’m about to say some things that might not be well received, but), who does she think she is? I thought the character of Ridley was going to be a good addition to the show, but in this episode, I kinda changed my mind on that a bit. John is the sort of person who - whilst capable of remaining incredibly calm under pressure - does have a massive heart. I mean, look how he took in EOS after she nearly killed him (and potentially Scott, Brains and Alan) and gave her a second chance. Ridley knows he would rescue anyone because that is his job. Emotional blackmail doesn’t sit well with me - and whilst many might not see her actions in that way - that’s how they always come across to me. This entire conversation makes out very clearly that she stayed because she wanted IR to save Global One, but knew there was no chance of that occurring if it was just the ship in the comet’s way. So she stays, and then trips every switch that John has - because he (like most of the Tracy family in the odd world of 2060) has a conscience - and makes herself need rescuing when it could have been avoided. Maybe I see it more this way because I’ve always had a soft spot for John - up in space, all on his own - but even if this isn’t blackmail, it’s manipulative. And even if it wasn’t intended that way, it definitely works that way. With Alan and Virgil on the comet, the only other option is for John to act and - like Scott says - put himself in danger, all for one person who didn’t listen to him in the first place, someone who you would have expected should have enough knowledge (and apparent care) to listen to him. It just annoys me that she acted that way.
Right, potential discussion-opening opinion out there, but I felt it needed saying (although hopefully I’ve written that argument well and not done any tired prattle). Now to move on.
“John, what are you doing?”
“Trying to save Captain O’Bannon’s life.”
“Oh. Well then, carry on, Using Thunderbird Five?
“That’s the general idea.”
“John, come on! If things don’t go your way, we could lose Global One, Thunderbird Five and you!”
“Love to hear about a better plan.”
Unfortunately I have to now return to my above essay. You see my point?
“There may not be time to pull Global One clear of the comet. I’ll rescue you first, then we can try.”
“No! It’s like we discussed. Save me, save my station. Package deal.”
“Ridley, be reasonable.”
Yes, be reasonable, and don’t put people (i.e. John) needlessly in danger.
“John, this is my command and I am not about to abandon it. Would you give up Thunderbird Five if the boot was on the other foot?”
Already discussed this as well, so won’t repeat myself too much, but really, manipulative is the only word which struck me for all of this. There was (other than for the sake of expanding the episode) no reason for Ridley to put John in this position.
“Score one to you, Captain.”
See? Forgiving John (or maybe blind John) all over again. And wait for it;
“Just like climbing set of monkey bars.”
“If the monkey bars are twenty-two thousand miles high.”
“John.. don’t help.”
Okay, really now, make your mind up because you cannot have everything, and I definitely believe that you cannot treat someone who is risking their life for you (job or not) - and who you might have considered a friend - like that. Seriously, she irks me in this episode, a lot (if you hadn’t already guessed). But yeah, I’ve seen the real life effects of emotional manipulation like that, and I personally believe Ridley was really out of order, and even after she became trapped, and John risked coming out to rescue her there still wasn’t any apology.
I’m with EOS on this one, not jealous maybe, but angry. She stands to lose a lot as well if she loses John and/or Thunderbird Five, remember.
“Did I see Thunderbird Three sticking out of that comet?”
Yes, yes you did.
“This is us leaving... Except the grappling arms won’t retract!”
“What?”
“I’m not thrilled about it myself!”
I told you Alan was on form, did I not? He did really well to get them out of that situation then. He really is a skilled pilot.
“They did it!”
“I never doubted them for a moment.”
Of course not, Brains. We’ll just never speak of it, shall we?
So, apart from the fact this episode was in space (key point that one) and was called ‘Impact’, it still shared many similar elements with the earth-based TOS episode ‘Edge of Impact’, alongside the soon to come ‘Weather or Not’ TAG episode. Combined, ‘Impact’ and ‘Weather or Not’ sum up many elements featured in ‘Edge of Impact’ quite well - the high tower, the endangered lives, the near-misses, the potential loss of life, entrapment, the technological failure... anything I’ve missed?
Oh, and I really love the above poster.

EMOTION, because a CRJ blog needs to talk about EMOTION.
Some things in life are inevitable. Life, death, consumption of media, crying, interacting with others, and many other things, they are simply inevitabilities. Another inevitability is a Carly Rae Jepsen blog talking about EMOTION. It is something every blog-runner is eventually faced with, because of how impactful this record is for everyone who has listened to it. We will all write our EMOTION thinkpieces someday.
This post will only talk about the standard 12 tracks, Run Away With Me to When I Needed You. I will write about the Deluxe tracks (Black Heart, IDJCHTD, Favorite Colour, NGTHY, Love Again) some other time. Okay? Okay.
Also, I just realized my last two posts had the word “brilliance” on their titles. I do not know why that happened, maybe I’m a fan of the word, maybe they’re both brilliant! I don’t know. But the word “brilliance” is being banned from my titles from now on.
With that being said, let’s begin.
The First Three Tracks
I have talked about how important the first three tracks of an album are in my previous post, about Gone Now, but basically, the first three tracks are how they hook you, how they pull you in, how they make you stream it over and over. And EMOTION’s appetizers of Run Away With Me, EMOTION and I Really Like You are quite the solid ones. Run Away With Me wins every single “which is the best CRJ song” poll, so I really don’t want to talk about it, because I think everyone recognizes this is a good track. Personally, I think it is okay. Please don’t crucify me over this??? Thanks.
EMOTION is also a great track which I feel embodies what EMOTION (the album) is about. Which is why it shares a title with EMOTION (the album again). And this is what EMOTION (the album) is about. Emotion. I know, Queen of Subtlety, everyone please clap.
In all seriousness, EMOTION (the album!!!) is about love and the emotions that drive us. The love part is introduced with Run Away With Me, and the emotions, with EMOTION (the track). Run Away With Me is about unconditional love, about wanting to run away taking only the person you love the most. About forbidden love. About running away from all expectations and pursuing only love. EMOTION (the track again) is about evoking emotions in others, in those who you loved or still love, about wanting them to experience all emotions you two experienced together because you feel wronged by them.
And then we get to I Really Like You. I don’t like I Really Like You. You could say I Really Don’t Like It. And the fact it was the lead single? That’s just a weird choice. Sure, it’s catchy, and Tom Hanks is in the music video, but it’s just… not impactful enough? It’s very lovey-dovey, but that’s all it is. Love. Really Liking someone. There are better songs out there. But well, the first two tracks are so good, I think it hardly matters.
The Second Three Tracks..????
The middle of an album is weird. This is usually where themes are explored and pushed far. Lorde’s Melodrama features The Louvre, single Liability and Hard Feelings, where the themes of love shine through after their introduction through Green Light and Sober. Bleachers’ Gone Now features lead single Don’t Take The Money, along with Everybody Lost Somebody and All My Heroes. EMOTION’s tracks 4 through 6 are Gimmie Love, All That and Boy Problems.
These are weird tracks. The theme of love is very loosely present in all these songs, and the 80’s vibes shine very strongly here (especially in All That), but there is not much connecting all of them. Gimmie Love is about doing it with an ex, who you wish still loved you, All That is about being and doing everything for someone, and always being there for them, and then you have Boy Problems, which is, well, about how Boys Suck. The storyline of the record is confusing at best, much like Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia. Future Nostalgia, much like EMOTION, is an album about those cool disco vibes and there is not really a present, recurring theme shared between most of its tracks. The progression on EMOTION is basically, “I love you, let’s run away”, then “I hope you suffer, because I kind of want you back”, followed by “Hey, I like you!” which then becomes “let’s have sex”, and then “I want to always be here for you and do everything for you and everything about you is incredible”... only to be stopped by “hey men are kind of trash aren’t they?”, the progression is all over the place. A record doesn’t need to be composed of only tracks that tell a concise story, of course, and I’ll talk about what this means for EMOTION later on.
The Second Set Of Second Three Tracks
“When you need me / I will never let you fall apart / When you need me / I will be your candle in the dark”
This is for later, don’t worry. :)
Tracks 7 through 9 are also quite the odd bunch, with a bunch of odd tracks with zero correlation between each other.
Making the Most of the Night is about being there for who you love no matter what, much like All That, with a sick beat instead of the more chill vibes. Your Type is a song about jealousy, one that is very welcome on EMOTION because it displays both themes of love and emotions very well. Your Type shines. It ranks very highly on every EMOTION ranking I see because it’s hard-hitting. “I’m not the type of girl for you / And I’m not going to pretend / I’m the type of girl you call more than a friend / And I break all the rules for you / Break my heart and start again / I’m not the type of girl you call more than a friend”? Damn. Let’s Get Lost is kind of meh. Run Away With Me did the whole “running away from everyone” deal a lot better. But I think it sets out to do a thing and it does the thing. Not particularly impressive, but it’s good.
I have seen people go insane because of someone saying their favorite EMOTION song was bad or annoying, so if you have felt personally offended by any of these, send me an ask. End all your asks with “+” so I know you hate me. It’s okay. My self-esteem is quite high nowadays. I also wish to keep track of which of you to watch out for. Unless you send them anonymously, of course. In that case, I hope I know how to evade you. I have seen this happen very frequently with people who like Let’s Get Lost, so that’s why I’m apologizing.
Why didn’t I apologize at the end, though? Well, it’s because the next three are my favorites.
The End: The Last Three Tracks
The last songs of an album are magical. All the themes shine after their exposition in earlier tracks, allowing the record’s message to be complete and meaningful. Of course, not every record needs to do this, but it’s a lot cooler if they do.
L. A. Hallucinations is a nice song about a love story that starts being interrupted because of fame and how impactful it is to one’s life, Warm Blood is this eerie-sounding track about creating this façade and hiding who you are, only to meet someone who makes you give up on everything because you wish to be completely truthful to them, and When I Needed You is the best Carly Rae Jepsen song. No, I am absolutely not biased, shut up.
I think the album’s title, and its theme of emotion, shine on the last tracks. The build-up for the closing track is simply wonderful, and it just ties everything together. The connections that opening and closing tracks (or simply first and second halves) have is a beautiful thing to witness. Let’s take Melodrama as an example, since I’ve been listening to it a lot lately.
Melodrama is divided into two main parts: Green Light through Hard Feelings, tracks 1 through 6; and Loveless through Perfect Places, tracks 6 through 11. The first half of the album is dedicated to Lorde sharing how she feels, how her breakup makes her feel, how harshly she feels everything. How she loved and how she is no longer loved, how she didn’t care about what happened to her as long as she was having fun and how she sees that what she was doing hurts herself. The second half is Lorde accepting that she is not loved by him anymore, that it is not really her fault and that she has to move on, knowing that her ex may or may not realize what he’s done. That’s why we get Sober II, when Sober was present in the first half, and Liability (Reprise), when Liability was also in the first half. The first half was about hurting and feeling awful, while the second part is about how you're not the only awful person out there. In Liability, Lorde believes wholeheartedly that she is a burden to everyone, that she is too much, that she needs to disappear, but in Liability (Reprise), she mocks such an idea, or perhaps even comes into terms with the fact that she is a liability, and then follows it up with “Whatcha gonna do?”, because if she admits such a thing and is not bothered by it, then it doesn’t matter. After reflecting on whether or not she’s a liability, she doesn’t care anymore.
EMOTION's When I Needed You is basically Melodrama's second half crammed into a single track, and oh, does it sound good. This track fixes every single problem I had with EMOTION's inconsistency, its contradictory themes. Because I can just argue that it's foreshadowing. This is the part where I argue that it's foreshadowing.
When I Needed You, And How Great Closing Tracks Are Important
When I Needed You basically turns EMOTION on its head. Everything about this track is straight up perfection. All the emotions that kept hiding from you and refusing to show themselves finally do in what is, in my opinion, the best closing track of any pop record.
It’s just… the way everything sounds, the amazing production, the lyrics, it’s all just… so perfect??? EMOTION (the track), Your Type and Boy Problems kind of don’t fit the theme of the rest of the record, they’re not about how amazing it is to be loved, and instead are about how painful it is (for EMOTION and Your Type) and how love does not matter (Boy Problems). When I Needed You somehow manages to tie all these themes together with stellar lyricism.
“Sometimes I wish that I could change / But not for me, for you / So we could be together forever”
The sheer power of these lyrics, oh wow. Carly is just so tired of things not working out that she wishes to become someone else. She wants to be who she isn’t. All of that, just because she likes someone who doesn't like her for who she is.
“But I know, I know that I won’t change for you / ‘cause where were you for me? / When I needed someone / When I needed someone / When I needed you”
Very few records reach this level of… I don’t know. It’s hard to explain. But not every track can take the premise of “I wish I were someone else, but is it worth it?” and do it like When I Needed You does.
Remember what I said in All That, how I saved those lyrics for later? This is the part I bring them up.
“When you need me / I will never let you fall apart / When you need me / I will be your candle in the dark”
“[...] where were you for me? / When I needed someone [...] / When I needed you”
Carly wishes to be everything for someone in All That, she wishes to do literally anything for her lover, but in When I Needed You, she reveals her lover won’t do a single thing for her. Her lover does not care for her. And it doesn’t matter what she does, it doesn’t matter because she is not who she wants her to be.
I’m a Bleachers blog too, so I’m bringing Strange Desire up. I think Strange Desire, much like EMOTION, suffers from not having a very cohesive theme between all its tracks. Most of them are about love, and then you have I Wanna Get Better, and some more songs about love, but the album is quite… tame? It sets out to do something and it does it, and I like it.
The final track of Strange Desire, “Who I Want You To Love”, is quite the odd one. Whereas most songs in Bleachers’ first record are about wanting to see someone evolve while also struggling with evolving yourself, Who I Want You To Love is not really like that. It’s more like a “I give up” letter.
“I will love who you want me to love / Oh, I will bleed when you want me to bleed / But I don’t wanna know too much of anything / Because it all hurts me”
WIWYTL is simply about giving up. Going so far you don’t care about what happens to you. And it’s a perfect closing track for a record like Strange Desire. It has feeling. It has emotion. It has power, strong themes, a message. It’s beautiful. If you only come here for my CRJ content, I highly recommend you listen to Bleachers. It’s a bit wonky at first, but I’m sure you’ll love it if you give it a try.
Back to CRJ though, When I Needed You is an example of how to do a closing track. The weird, contradictory messages that popped up every now and then? It was self-doubt. Doubt that this relationship could grow. That maybe everything was not so great. She experiences a breakup, then falls in love again, and again, and again, only to realize she was changing too much for the people she loved, she was doing too much, and she doesn’t need to do too much. She needs to be happy and make others happy being herself, instead of changing who she is. And this is the main lesson you should take from this song: if you’re changing who you are just to satisfy someone you love, and you’re not happy with who you’re becoming, stop. It is not worth it.
I think every track has a message that can be taken from it, and the most important ones lie in Run Away With Me and When I Needed You. And I think that’s why so many people LOVE Run Away With Me. Because they love the message. Because of how beautiful the lyrics are, and because of how many people identify with wanting to run away with who they love, because they’re queer, because others would not understand, because being LGBT+ is seen as sinful. Or maybe it’s about sex, and that’s what the sinning implies, but I like my (and many other people’s) interpretation better.
Well, that’s all I have for today! Have a great month and happy holidays. As we approach December, I might start pumping out extra content, potentially talking about other records I love (Melodrama lol) or some other things I feel like you (my beautiful lovely readers) might enjoy! If there’s an album you want me to listen to, feel free to send me recs through the asks function! Goodbye.

594-595: "Formed! Luffy and Law's Pirate Alliance!" and "Capture M! the Pirate Alliance's Operation Launches!"

After seeing what the Strawhats are really like and realising what he’s got himself into, Law has longing visions of the apocalypse.
That look on Law’s face.
You all know the one I’m talking about.
The one that started as a sweatdrop and morphed into a full-blown look of: I deeply regret this but am in way too deep to back out now.
I watched that scene three times. Pure gold.
If You Keep Telling Everyone About Our Plan, Maybe

So I think I misjudged Trafalgar Law.
Maybe.
Still not one-hundred percent certain Law does not have another hidden agenda but... I am about seventy percent on board with the fact he has good intentions. At the moment. Like Robin said, pirate alliances are marked by betrayal, so this could change in future. (But I don’t want it to. I like Law as a good-ish guy.)
Like Nami, I was also was not expecting Luffy to accept so quickly. Maybe at the end of the arc, I thought. Have no idea why I even entertained that daft idea. This is Luffy we’re talking about.
Law sold it as best he could without giving Oda’s entire plot away. “I’m not saying we can beat the Yonko right away. There is a chance, if we do it step by step. What do you say?”
Luffy’s daft but not an idiot. He asked Law to which Yonko he was referring. I’m guessing that was important because I honestly can’t see Luffy going against Shanks unless something really serious puts something between them. I was pretty damned interested in Law’s answer, so when Oda used that favourite trop of his: a sudden howling blizzard carried away Law’s voice, I laughed like a drain and cursed Oda and his teasing ways.
Fine. I get it. I won’t know at least until after this arc.
I also liked Luffy’s reasons for accepting Law’s offer of alliance. One, it sounded like fun. Two, he thought Tra-guy was a good guy. And three, even if he wasn’t, he had his Strawhats, who had spent the last two years training to become stronger (with the implication they could kick Law’s ass if the misbehaved).
This totally won over the Strawhats. They sort of melted into a puddle of giggling, flattered, enraged goo. Law was standing there staring like, “Wtf are these people?”
Still, as a gesture of goodwill, he unshambled all those who were able to be restored to their bodies. I am guessing is because of plot. Chopper and Franky are back to normal (Chopper had to leave with Law for a reconnaissance mission to Caesar’s lab). However, Nami and Sanji are now inhabiting each others’ bodies (because Sanji was not nearby to be restored to his own. I’m guessing you’ve got to be in Law’s Room).
Law was also not keen on the experiment kids. They were a pain. A liability. Forget about them. He’d heard from Caesar they’d been drugged. Chopper and Nami protested. They knew about the drug. They had already decided to take the kids back to their families. Law revealed the World Government have been trying to turn people into giants for hundreds of years. Why? In order to manufacture soldiers to increase their military might.
Apparently, Caesar wants to perfect the process first and outsmart Vegapunk and the World Government. (Okay, so Caesar is not still working for the WG after all. Is he that wealthy he can fund himself or is another faction bankrolling him? Maybe the Yonko Law is talking about defeating?)
Law was still unconvinced helping the kids was a good idea. “Are you willing to stay here alone?” he asked Nami.
Luffy, the Best Captain, jumped in. He would not leave anyone behind. If Nami and Chopper wanted to help the kids, he was fine with that. Sanji felt responsible for the Samurai Guy too. So Luffy would stay with them.
Usopp was so funny here. He leaned over Luffy’s shoulder and gave Law some Strawhat Context. “You think an alliance is a cooperative relationship just for some common goal, don’t you?”
Um... yes, Law answered.
Ha. Well Luffy’s idea was different. It’s like being friends to him. And if Law was thinking of taking control, it would not be that easy. Once Luffy feels sure about something He Will Not Back Down. His selfishness, Usopp said, was as formidable as a Yonko. (”That must he hard,” Luffy said. xD)
At that point, I think Law reached his Strawhat Saturation Point. These people were like freaking aliens to him. But whatever. He’d agreed to an alliance. So he laid out his plan of action. While the rest of the Strawhats took care of the samurai, he would go research the drug behind Caesar’s back. He needed the Strawhats’ doctor. Chopper was strapped to his hat. xD

Then, when that was clearly undignified, his back.
Before Law left, he issued a warning. Caesar wanted the Strawhats and the G-5 Unit dead. Until Caesar gets what he wants, he will not stop attacking. If any info leaked about him being on Punk Hazard, Caesar would lose his perfect hiding place. This is high stakes stuff for Caesar. He will fight tooth-and-nail to win. Not only that, he is a Logia type Gas Gas Fruit user who owns weapons of mass destruction with a 300 million bounty. Law cautioned anyone who couldn’t use haki to stay away from him.
Useful intel to have, to be honest. Thanks, Law.
And it was thanks to the conversation that I now know Zoro and Sanji can also use Haki. Did I miss that or is that completely new thing?
After that, came the part of the episode that was my Absolute Favourite. I definitely did not see this coming. Before Law left with Chopper, Luffy said, “So we’re gonna kidnap the Master, right?”
“Not for any money,” Law said. “To raise havoc.”
Despite the Strawhats asking, he would not tell them what lay ahead before they even successfully kidnapped Caesar. Focus on the job at hand. He would spill all later. Then said, rather ominously, “When we get Caesar Clown, things will move whether you like it or not.”
Ooooooooooooooh....
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH.
Now this is a juicy nugget of plot. I also do not think this has ever happened in One Piece: defeating the arc villain in order to kidnap him, use him as a catalyst and trigger some nefarious skullduggery in the New World with a view to taken down a Yonko.
Caesar Clown must be really something. I guess if he is an inventor and purveyor of weapons of mass destruction, his services will be in demand within certain sections of the OPverse.
This is cool. I was a bit miffed when I realised this arc would end quickly as it has been great so far. You guys were right. This is an intro arc that seems to lead on to bigger things involving Trafalgar Law’s crazy idea.
Also, I cannot wait for Chopper to lay eyes on Caesar Clown for the first time. Chopper is gonna have to exercise some wicked self-control to not smack him for mistreating those kids. Chopper also asked Law an interesting question: if Law was so strong and could reach Caesar Clown that easily (because Law had just Roomed himself round to the lab’s back door), why could he capture Caesar himself?
Law deflected, as he always does. “I cannot because of a problem I have. That’s why I need help from you guys.”
A problem? Must be a pretty big problem.
And by the way, where are your crew, Law?
I am making myself suspicious again.
I need to just believe in Law, like Luffy does. Because the arc villain is making a move.
And That Move Is Called Smiley

Smiley.
Cannot get over that. xD
Caesar, you crack me up.
He’s probably one of those deranged scientist types who give their hellbeast creations adorable names. Everyone flees from the tentacled abomination that is Mr Binky Sparkle-Pants. Everyone knows Candy Smoochy Schmoo will devour your soul.
This one is called Smiley. Smiley is a sentient, hill-sized conglomeration of incredibly toxic waste left over from the chemical explosion four years ago. Caesar gleefully explain to Monet that when he escaped custody and returned to Punk Hazard about three years back, he did not purify the island of the poison gas (*the* only good deed he had left to his name!) I mean, why would anyone do such a wasteful thing? All that poison lying around? That H2S gas he had invented that killed everything on the island in second? It’s Free Real Estate, right?
What he did was (probably) use his Gas Gas Fruit (thanks for the confirmation, Law!) to gather all the leftover poison gas and compress it into a monster, which he secured in a vault on the burning half of the island.
And he called it Smiley. xD
I guess Caesar has a sense of humour?
At any rate, this squamous behemoth was unleashed by the gang of unfortunate fodders who were trying to break into a vault at the end of the last episode. I knew they’d meet a sticky end. I just didn’t know how sticky.
They tried to call their wonderful Master to report they were being killed by a poisonous monster.
Sympathy? In MY Laboratory? Get the FUCK OUTTA HERE!

But Caesar was in the lab, heard the DDM, was all like, “ugggggh, so needy!” He told his main minion not to pick up the call. Why? The fodders would just be screaming “Help, a monster is killing us! Save us!” How annoying, right?
And you know what else was annoying? The amount of visitors. Ugh. So many. Caesar seems to work in euphemism a lot because all he said was, “You can stop gathering test subjects now. We have enough.”
I’m guessing that’s code for “these freeloading Strawhats and Marines have overstayed their welcome. Time to die!” He had a jolly good lol to himself while Monet studied quietly in a corner (she must have learned to block out the cackling by now or she would get zero work done).
Caesar’s knowledge of how to manipulate human nature was summed up when he said, “People tend to forget tragedies in no time!” That is harsh but true. He knew sooner or later what happened in Punk Hazard would be forgotten by the majority, leaving him free to practice his wicked experiments with impunity.
He really is a piece of work, eh?
As of now, Smiley is currently oozing towards Caesar’s lab. Zoro, Sanji and Brook saw it approach on the horizon.
They found Kinemon, by the way! His torso fell into the lake and sank like a rock because he’s a Devil Fruit user. Because of that, the rest of his parts became super weak and he almost froze to death. If Zoro hadn’t found him, he’d be dead. At least he’s finally grateful for the Strawhats’ help. I wonder what he’ll say when he finds out they’re working with Law, the guy who slashed him up? I wonder what Zoro, Sanji and Brook will say when they find out Luffy’s working with Law?”
It won’t be a secret for long, they way Luffy’s going on. xD
NO, WE DON’T HAVE A SECRET PLAN AT ALL. WHY DO YOU ASK?

While Law was sneaking round the back door with Chopper and Smoker and his crew were battling to seize Caesar’s ship, Luffy had a Big Idea. Back at the camp, he whispered to Robin and Franky, the Strawhats who would go with him. (I’m assuming Nami and Usopp are guarding the kids and waiting for Zoro, Sanji Brook and Samurai to return.)
Smoker was having a tough time. Fighting in someone else’s body was difficult. Poor Tashigi kept turning to smoke at random and couldn’t turn back. (You know what? If this wasn’t such a serious situation, it’d be well fun to have a go in a Devil Fruit User’s body!)
Then Luffy arrived with a literal BANG! He cannoned into the snow right at the front door of Caesar’s Lab and roared, “SHOW YOURSELF, MASTER! WE WILL KICK YOUR ASS AND KIDNAP YOU!”
I swear the impact from Law’s facepalm was heard as far as Raftel.

Trip Advisor Review: Punk Hazard
“Arrived on island. Was welcomed warmly by hotel proprietor. Accommodation was clinically austere but the bar was well-stocked. Woke up one morning and I was a centaur. Not pleased. Proprietor maintains he has no recollection of how this happened. Only other guest remains tight-lipped. Refused refund. One star. Would not recommend.”

11 ESSENTIAL ROAD TRIP TIPS FOR BUDGET SAVVY TRAVELERS

When it involves travel, road trips are often pretty awesome. you'll stop at as many or as few places as you’d wish to go, get on your schedule, discover new places along the way, and see parts of the country you couldn’t if you were flying. But while road tripping might sound sort of a less costly thanks to traveling than say flying or cruising, it can also get expensive pretty quickly.
To begin the nice and cozy weather travel season, we thought it had been time to require a touch road trip and shake off the winter blues. Nothing that was an excessive amount of an extended haul, but had beautiful scenery, fun things to try to, interesting stops and much great food, wine, and craft beer. We selected driving through beautiful Southeastern Pennsylvania, with stops in Gettysburg and Lancaster County. Once we planned out a route, booked places to remain and visit, got our car serviced and packed up only enough clothes for the 5 days away, we were able to head out. much fun and… much money with things we learned along the way.
But, we've you covered. Here we offer you 11 tips and tricks we learned on our last road trip which will assist you to economize and stick with your travel budget next time you hit the road. And away we go…
1. Create A Budget Before You Go
If you don’t want to run out of cash on your road trip or click to a MasterCard bill which will knock you off your seat, make certain to make a budget. Road trips and traveling generally are often plenty of fun. But it also can get really expensive if you don’t plan properly. Whether it's for expected expenses like gas, food or activities you recognize you would like to try to, or unexpected mishaps like car trouble, it’s best to possess everything so as so you'll have the simplest trip possible. Start by making an inventory of all the expenses you'll reasonably plan for including, lodging, food, gas, and tolls. Once you recognize what proportion you would like to spend on necessities, whatever is left over you'll use for extra goodies like activities, museums, tours, wine, and beer tastings and souvenirs.
2. Plan Your Route Before you allow
One of the simplest ways to save lots of money on your road trip is to plan and map your route beforehand. Planning your course before you allow the house will offer you a solid idea of which routes are the foremost efficient and economical thanks to your destination. this will prevent major headaches and time on the road, and may get you to the fun places you would like to travel faster.. and that we all know spending less time on the road will prevent more gas, which always = money.
Some many online tools and apps are designed to form this step super easy. one of my favorite ways to start out planning a road trip is by aged Google Maps. Not only is it incredibly accurate, but you'll plan your route consistent with distance, time, and plot a course that avoids toll roads. While all tolls won't be avoidable on the thanks to your destination, oftentimes there’s a route which will get you to where you would like to travel within the same amount of your time, without having to tug money out of your pocket at the toll booth. you'll also add multiple stops to your itinerary and use the “Street View” tool to urge a true life actual street-level view to assist you easily find landmarks and see locations you would possibly visit beforehand.
I also love that if you happen to hit traffic along the way, Google Maps will recalculate to offer you an alternate route to assist you to save time if possible. Less time idling in traffic also will help conserve gas and keep you from having to refill your car more often.
3. Never Pay ATM Fees On The Road Again With This Travel Card
It’s inevitable. At some point, you’re getting to need cash on the road. And one among the foremost annoying expenses when traveling? ATM fees. And at anywhere from $2.00 to $3.50 per transaction, they will add up quickly. absolutely the best solution we’ve found? Open an NB bank account with Needham Bank. If you’re thinking I have already got an open-end credit, stop. Stop thinking immediately, because you don’t have one like this. regardless of where you travel within the world, NB Checking has you covered with global ATM fee reimbursement. meaning every ATM, whether you’re in your town or halfway around the world, every ATM is your ATM. I buy frustrated thinking of all the cash I’ve wasted in silly ATM fees over the years. On this 5 excursion alone, we saved an $18.25 in ATM fees. And, that doesn’t include the hidden fees your bank will come along and charge you after you're taking the cash out. Not Needham Bank. With this card, I’m forever taking over the planet, ATM fee-free.
Other amazing benefits to the present card are that there’s no minimum account balance required, no monthly fees and you'll earn interest on your balance. you'll even earn rewards on your purchases. Yes, you'll make money too. this is often the grail of travel cards. The Needham Bank mobile app can keep you on top of your finances on the go and each account comes together with your banker.
In addition to getting your cash free from the ATM, NB Debit Cards are powered by MasterCard and may be used anywhere MasterCard is accepted. So, that’s just about everywhere. you furthermore may get MasterCard’s Zero Liability Protection which protects you against unauthorized or fraudulent transactions whether at the ATM, a store or anywhere else.
Lancaster Farmers Market
Plus, having cash available with you when you’re traveling may be a must. While most businesses take credit, sometimes you encounter places that only accept cash. It can happen more often than you realize. On our recent road trip, we found many cash-only vendors in Lancaster’s famous Central Market. Having cash also can make tipping, paying for tolls and buying small-dollar items like snacks or coffee easier. It also can get you a far better price when shopping at places like flea markets or when negotiating with vendors at fairs and festivals. Cash is simply more appealing to a business owner. At the top of the day, it shouldn’t cost you to access your own money. And with the NB Checking, it never does.
4. Get Your Car Serviced Professionally And Check Your Tires
Even when you’re not traveling on a road trip, car trouble is often total drag. It’s one thing when you’re on the brink of home and have people or service stations that you simply know you'll trust. It’s an entire another can of worms when you’re many miles from home and possibly within the middle of nowhere. Yikes. While car troubles can’t always be 100% prevented, a visit to your local station can confirm your wheels are running smoothly, and more importantly, safely. They’ll confirm your oil and other fluids are topped off and your tires also are properly inflated, which may improve mileage. This can be an honest time to urge car care if your car is due, or near due. I always find my car runs better just after fresh car care anyway. And last, but never least is to form sure you check your tires. They’re the one thing grounding your car to the road. If your tire is worn, which will be an accident waiting to happen which, could potentially not only ruin your trip but cost you thousands in repairs, increased insurance premiums and at the worst, hospital bills.
5. confirm you've got some sort of Road-Side Assistance
Even if you are doing everything right, sometimes car trouble is inevitable. ask your insurance carrier to form sure you’re covered within the event you grind to a halt on the side of the road. If not, price it out and check to ascertain if an auto club like AAA may be a better deal, which also gives members access to some nice travel discounts at hotels, events, zoos, theme-parks and more additionally to discounted assistance on the road.
6. Plan Your Lodging before Time Whenever Possible
After you’ve set your budget and planned your trip, now’s the time to book your hotels and motels. Since life on the road is often unpredictable, choose hotels with a versatile cancellation policy so you’re not out a night’s stay within the event of obstacles like car troubles, inclemency, illness or other unforeseen events. Maybe nothing bad happened in the least and you only love where you're and need to remain a touch longer?
But, simply because you would like somewhere to remain the eleventh hour, doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily spend more. to save lots of money on accommodations, visit websites and download the apps of travel sites like Trivago, Hotels.com, Kayak, Priceline, or Orbitz to seek out eleventh-hour deals. If you favor more homey digs check bb-online for specials on B&Bs and inns. If the hotel you’re staying with maybe a chain or a part of a bigger brand, see if they need a gift membership program that will assist you to earn rewards towards free stays within the future. Often you'll economize on room rates only for joining online.
7. refill For Less! Use control and obtain A Gas App
While a part of the fun of taking a road trip is often deciding to require an unexpected detour, you'll economize on unavoidable road trip expenses like gas and tolls. We already discussed you'll start by planning out your route before you hit the road. But, for when you’re already on the road make certain to download an app like GasBuddy onto your smartphone which will assist you to get the simplest price on gas regardless of where you're. you only enter your postcode, address or give the app permission to work out your location, and it'll offer you an inventory of the most cost-effective gas prices nearby. Ever get gas at one station, only to drive another mile or two down the road and see you'll have filled up for 10 or 20 cents less? That always gets me. GasBuddy takes the guesswork out filling up your car on a budget. It also, like Google Maps can assist you to calculate your road trip’s toll and gas costs, so you'll plan and budget properly.
8. to save lots of Even More $ On The Road: Eat Strategically
While eating and drinking well is often one of the simplest parts of travel, it also can be a complete drain on your budget. Traveling as a few, we could easily spend a minimum of $120 each day eating call at restaurants on the road. For us that sometimes includes lunch, dinner and native treats or a drink along the way. And if you’re traveling to an upscale city like San Francisco or NY, $120 might be spent during a flash. But there are some ways you'll still happily chow down on the road and save dough while you’re at it.
9. Travel With A Cooler Bag
No road trip should ever be traveled without a cooler bag. Packing a number of your food, snacks, and drinks will keep you from having to spend extra cash on overpriced drinks and snacks at gas stations and convenience stores. nutriment can get expensive too. By packing more of your food, you'll also stick with healthier options like protein bars, bananas, spread, cheese and apples which will keep you satiated on the road, while saving you money.
10. Prioritize Your Meals
Do you live for an excellent breakfast or would you rather skip it and put the cash towards a good better dinner? I usually skip eating breakfast out and instead will eat a banana or protein bar, and just grab a coffee tide me over. albeit you can’t live without a hot breakfast, then you'll still economize. Many hotels offer a complimentary breakfast together with your stay. For a family of 4, 5 mornings of free breakfast can prevent some serious bucks. And don’t forget to grab an additional banana or two at that complimentary breakfast bar. they create great snacks for when hunger pangs hit you while you’re within the car exploring for the day, or back at the hotel preparing for dinner.
11. Check Local Restaurant Websites For hour Deals And Specials
To save money eating out later within the day, don’t forget that a lot of restaurants offer daily specials and/or a cheerful hour menu with food also as drinks. If you've got restaurants or eateries on your must-do list, make certain to see their website or Facebook page for hour specials and rules. If you don’t see one listed, try giving the restaurant a call. Not every restaurant is great about marketing their offerings.
Also, the hour is not any longer only 5 pm to 7 pm, and not all restaurants require you to sit at the bar. Some happy hours can start as early as 3 pm and a few can end as late as 8 pm. So if you didn’t plan, just Google something like “3 pm happy hours near me” to seek out an inventory of local restaurants for you to settle on from. One gathering room we visited in Gettysburg offered three free tastings to each customer. How does one like that?

Not Scared
My life is not nearly as dramatic as it sounds in these essays. It's a lot of work making this stuff seem exciting, I hope whoever reads this can appreciate that.
I was looking forward to a long holiday weekend of absolutely nothing. Really, nothing was going to happen. I would have supper with my family on Thursday, come home for a nice bath, and that was it. No plans. No responsibilities. Zero drama. Maybe a little closet cleaning to get the blood moving, that's it.
Thanksgiving started out great. All the food I needed to bring was ready, my hair was washed and looked normal, and the weather forecast promised a glorious day. I had a brand new North Face hoodie for the chill, with a light layer underneath for later in the day.
My son even showed up on time. I said 0900, he rolled in at 0908. He picked up the bag of food and put his hand out for the keys.
“You're driving my truck?”
“Yeah Mom. My rear end is about to take a dump.”
Cool, I thought as I grabbed a bottle of the Beaujolais. Designated driver means Mellow Mom.
He hit the key fob and opened the door. There was shit strewn all over the backseat.
“What the hell? When did you turn into such a pig, Mom?”
I’m not. There may be a stray straw wrapper in the door compartment, but I am usually really good about cleaning out the truck at the end of the day. I looked in the seat, and everything I saw came out of the console hatch. The insurance card. Two scent sticks. Some convex mirrors I bought and need to put on the side views. A box of Altoids.
I’m good about cleaning out the truck, but I’m bad about locking it. And someone had pawed through my stuff, looking for who knows what. Seems like they were disappointed at what old women keep in their 4 Runners, they didn’t even take the Bruce Springsteen CD. All the stuff was there, just moved around. Even the yoga mat still had the scarf tied around it.
This makes me sad, because I’ve never worried much about locking up, and now I guess I have to. Garrett came by yesterday morning with a copy of the key to the porch door, and reminded me that I need to lock up the house whenever I go out.
OK, I will, just because you asked me to. I know you will come by at random times to check and then yell at me if I don’t. But I don't like it, either one, the yelling or the locking.
I had that key in the pocket of my new North Face hoodie this morning when I had the Great Bike Wreck. It didn’t even fall out when I crashed.
But by the time I got home, my elbow sure hurt. And my hand was kind of feeling tingly and numb. And my legs were shaking, my butt was starting to get sore, and the place where I hit my head…well, I decided to do the grownup thing and go to Doc in the Box. Just to make sure I hadn’t really hurt the elbow, my bones are kind of old.
I hate going to the doctor, so I was feeling proud of myself sitting there filling out the papers on the clipboard, being an adult and all. And there was no one else in chairs, so I figured I could get checked out and be home in maybe an hour.
Then a man came in with a lady in a wheelchair. He was confused and upset. She was drooling and leaning to the left.
Stroke. That was the first thing that popped into my head. He should be at the ER, not here.
The receptionist didn’t think so; she thought she needed to get him to work on the clipboard papers and give her the insurance cards. She went to make copies and he went to fill out forms.
His wife just sat there drooling.
Of course I butted in. Have you met me?
I’ll bet he wasn’t planning to start out his day at the Minor Emergency Clinic, and he sure wasn’t expecting a woman with a bloody North Face hoodie to come up and ask him if he needed any help. But still, he seemed happy to talk. So I asked him questions. Lots of questions. Like how was his wife last night, had she talked to him this morning…and his answers painted a very clear picture. She had been making him scrambled eggs and she dropped the spatula, sat down at the table and drooled.
What about the wheelchair? He said it was in the corner from when he had broken his hip.
OK. All I need to know. What I should have done was told him to follow me and ran that chair back out the door and fifty feet across the parking lot to the ER, but I was being an adult, so I reached over the counter and pushed the red button that opens the doors to the back of the clinic and found a clerk sitting at a computer terminal charting.
I told him what to do. He ignored me and called 911.
An ambulance came (from the porte cochere at ER) and loaded them up. Before they made the left turn across traffic to get to the clinic, I got the number of their son, called him and told him to get to the hospital. He was there before the gurney was in the bus.
That’s it. I don’t know how she is, I don’t even know their names, but dammit, even clerks should get some basic triage training if they are going to work in medical offices. I guess it’s a liability thing. Or maybe a stupidity thing.
I really hope the helicopter I heard taking off a little while later wasn’t her.
Eventually the excitement died down, and the doctor came in to see me. He had to help me take off the hoodie, and the thermal under it, so he could look at my elbow. He was embarrassed because all I had on was the hoodie and the thermal, and he offered a paper sheet to cover the rest of me, but I don’t really care about that. You're supposed to be looking at my elbow. It was bleeding again from taking off the thermal, and my fingers were a little puffy. Time for X Rays.
They have a little portable unit that rolls into the room, and the images are digital now, so I have no idea why they made me wait so long after the cart rolled away. But eventually he came back in and found me sitting at the counter looking at the pictures on the desk monitor. No breaks, just a big contusion and maybe a slight sprain.
I had my shirt back on, so he relaxed a little and asked me what happened. I told him, and I was still pretty amped from the lady who needed tPA STAT, so I gave him the story in great detail, with hand motions for emphasis.
He said he’d seen me riding my bike around town before, but didn’t even know Seguin had a bike trail. I told him not to bother looking for it.
Then he asked me how I knew about strokes, and I told him I just did, I know a lot of shit, you’d be surprised.
He laughed and said I told great stories, I should write a blog.
That’s the second person this week that’s told me that, making a grand total of four people so far. I don’t know this guy, and he doesn’t know me, so I told him I have one started, sort of, and gave him the Tumblr account link.
So maybe he will be my first “like” or “follow” on that thing. Maybe I'll noodle around with the day's events and post that, I don't know yet.
The doctor prescribed the usual: Rest. Ice. Elevation. I asked him about the C, could it be cocktails? He said not until after four in the afternoon. Go home and take some Advil, maybe have a nap. He cleaned up the blood and put a big Band Aid on my elbow.
I was an adult and followed the doctor’s orders. I went to the grocery store and almost bought myself flowers, but I got a paperback instead. Another surrogate boyfriend; Dr. Alex Delaware, the murder solving psychologist. He’s not as cool as Virgil Flowers, but then, few men are. I read for a little while and took a nap, with the ice pack on my elbow. I only had two glasses of wine with my leftover turkey sandwich. In a minute I'll go take a bath with some Epsom salts and probably fall asleep reading.
But tomorrow, all bets are off.
I’m riding that bike again. Not on the Trail to Hell, somewhere else, but I’m riding it. And I’m going to get a better bike, one that will go faster and not be so hard to control. I’m going to do that really soon, but tomorrow I’m going to ride that same bike. I’m not scared, maybe clumsy, but not scared.
And then, I’m going to get in my truck and go drive across the creek at the place where I floated a perfectly good Cadillac once.
It hasn’t rained for a while, and now I have a high clearance vehicle. So I’m just going to do it, then I can mark it off the list. I’ll go say hi to my Uncle Nelson if he’s home and maybe he will want to go have breakfast.
Because, you know what?
If I ever end up in a wheelchair with someone not knowing what to do when I’m having a stroke, I want to know I wasn’t afraid to live while I had the chance.
That's the shitty thing about strokes, you're still in there, but you're stuck.
I don't want to go to Doc in the Box. Just let the chair roll off the rocks, the ocean will take care of me.
I'm not scared.

7 players who could be the difference in the World Series

Getty Images
There are plenty of stars in the 2019 World Series, with Cy Young-laden pitching staffs, a former AL MVP plus two MVP-candidate third basemen this season. But they aren’t alone!
Here are seven impact Washington Nationals and Houston Astros who will enhance your Fall Classic viewing.

Getty Images
Yordan Alvarez
Coming into the postseason, it would have been difficult to envision a scenario where Yordan Alvarez would be considered a liability — he did nothing but mash baseballs over his first 87 games as a big leaguer. If baseball really was just a silly spreadsheet game where the best algorithm always won, then the Astros would have no qualms with sticking with a guy who hit .313/.412/.655 with 27 homers over just over half-a-season’s worth of work.
However, baseball is a game with a bunch of flawed humans and it almost never goes exactly according to plan. Instead of seeing the 22-year-old slugger continue to hit baseballs hard and often, we’ve seen him languish through a bleak postseason at the plate. Alvarez is only hitting .171/.227/.244 with an astronomical strikeout rate of 43.2 percent over 44 playoff plate appearances. He’s scuffling right now and it’s a testament to just how deep Houston is that they’ve reached this far.
A.J. Hinch isn’t giving up on him for the World Series, though. Alvarez will be starting for the first two games but there’s a question of whether or not he’ll get the start once the series shifts into the NL ballpark. A big breakout night at the plate before the series moves to Washington would make that decision an easy one for Hinch and it would also be a sign that things are going great for the Astros. They’ve already had consistent production at the plate throughout this postseason and if Yordan Alvarez can come alive, that would be huge for Houston’s chances of winning a second World Series in three years.
— Demetrius Bell
Michael Brantley
It’s just nice to have Michael Brantley fully healthy for the postseason, after several star-crossed years in Cleveland.
The talented outfielder finished third in AL MVP voting in 2014, then followed that up with another productive season in 2015. But when the Indians made their World Series run in 2016, Brantley was limited to just 11 games all season because of a shoulder injury — one that required surgery the offseason prior — and he missed the playoffs.
In 2017 he made the all-star team again in a wonderful comeback year, but then he missed 50 games with an ankle injury. He was rushed back to play in the postseason after playing just the final two games of the regular season, then was just 1-for-11 in Cleveland’s ALDS loss. He had ankle surgery after the season.
This year Brantley signed with the Astros, adding depth to an already formidable lineup. He was an all-star for a third straight year after a typically solid Brantley season, hitting .311/.372/.503 with 40 doubles and 22 home runs while providing above average defense in left field.
He made a crucial defensive play in Game 6 of the ALCS, following up a sprawling catch in left field with a strong, accurate throw to first base for a rally-killing double play.
Have a feeling we are going to be watching this for a while. pic.twitter.com/voWjyNaKfv
— MLB (@MLB) October 20, 2019
Brantley has started all 11 postseason games for Houston this year. He has been relatively quiet offensively, though he homered in the ALDS and hit .304 (7 for 23) in the ALCS. Brantley has also been very selective at the plate, seeing more pitches than anyone else this postseason, averaging 4.30 per plate appearance.

Sean Doolittle
Washington’s bullpen was mostly bad during the regular season, ranking 29th in relief ERA (5.68), ahead of only the execrable 108-loss Orioles. Sean Doolittle was a bright spot though, and shortly after the all-star break stood out with his 2.72 ERA. He allowed only three home runs in his first 44 appearances, but then went through a rough patch, surrendering seven home runs in his next 10 games, more than he allowed in any of his seven previous major league seasons.
That landed Doolittle on the injured list with right knee tendinitis, and after a two-week rest he was refreshed. He allowed all of two runs in eight innings in September, and has allowed two runs in his 7 playoff innings, giving him a 2.35 ERA since his return with 13 strikeouts and two walks. That’s much more in line with his career numbers entering 2019: a 2.83 ERA and 2.40 FIP, the latter ranking ninth among major league relievers.
Daniel Hudson has emerged as the Nationals closer this postseason, but Doolittle saved Game 1 of the NLCS when Hudson was on paternity leave and also got the final three outs to close out the NLDS against the Dodgers. Those two have been the most reliable relievers in the Nationals bullpen, with Doolittle looking a lot like his former self these last two months.
As a bonus, the better the Nationals do, the more likely we are to see Doolittle bust out his lightsaber.
The force is strong with Obi-Sean Kenobi. pic.twitter.com/2vsqvcUjoD
— MLB (@MLB) October 17, 2019
— Eric Stephen
Zack Greinke
Zack Greinke has made the postseason in six seasons on four different teams, but this will be his first World Series appearance. And if the Astros are going to succeed, they’re going to need Greinke to pitch more like he does in the regular season than he has in the playoffs.
In 14 postseason starts, Greinke is 3-6 with a 4.44 ERA. Compare that to his career .625 winning percentage and 3.35 ERA and it seems a bit peculiar. It gets a lot more bleak if you remove his postseason appearances with the Dodgers, where he was quite good. In his eight non-Dodgers playoff starts he’s got one win, an ERA of 6.64, and he averages about 11 H/2.5 HR/3.43 BB/ 7.78 SO per nine innings pitched. All of which is starkly worse than his career numbers.
In this postseason alone, he’s allowed 15 hits, five home runs and five walks in 14 innings. He’s also struck out 16, which shows an almost uncanny ability he has to average almost exactly as many hits as he does strike outs.
But, and I feel like this needs to be emphasized, he is actually a very good pitcher in the regular season. I’m not the type of person who believes in “clutch” or “choking” — I feel like those terms imply that a player can control exactly how well they play in the moment and I think that outside of conditioning and practice, that’s just not the case. Especially for pitchers. You can be in excellent shape and be a perennial Cy Young candidate and sometimes, you’re just not going to have control of your pitches.
That said, he was very good in his appearances with the Dodgers in the postseason, so it’s not necessarily a hopeless case. And if he can limit the contact while keeping up the strikeout numbers, he will be a very important factor to Houston’s success in this series.

Yuli Gurriel
So far this season the Astros first baseman is hitting just .209/.239/.302, and in the ALCS he was just 3-for-24 (.125). But look a little closer, and you’ll see Gurriel has been tattooing the ball. Nine of his 20 balls in play against the Yankees were hit 95 mph or harder.
Gurriel hit into outs on balls that, according to Statcast based on how hard and where they were hit, had expected batting averages of .820, .720, .620, .620, .550, .430, .420, and .410. He was robbed by Gio Urshela in Game 2, by Aaron Hicks in Game 3 and Game 4, then by Aaron Judge in Game 5, to name a few.
In the Game 6 clincher, Gurriel finally broke through with a three-run home run in the first inning, followed by a 101-mph single in the eighth. Factor that in with the fact that Gurriel has yet to strike out this postseason in 46 plate appearances, and he sure seems like somebody ready to bust out in a big way.

Howie Kendrick
Howie Kendrick is coming off of an absolute monster series in which he was named National League Division Series MVP at the age of 35. Including him on this list might be a bit obvious, but the Nationals are going to need him to carry that performance into the World series in order to stand a chance against the Monstars Astros.
Washington is the underdog in this matchup, but if players like Kendrick can continue to get on base with regularity, they have proven that they can capitalize on those opportunities, even against top-tier pitching.
It was Kendrick’s grand slam against the Dodgers that sent the Nationals to the championship series, seemingly against all odds, and his MVP performance that helped them sweep the Cardinals. So it seems almost expected that he will make a big contribution to this series to cap off one of the best seasons of his lengthy career.

Anibal Sanchez
With all the talk surrounding the three-headed monster of Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin, you have to remember that another pitcher who has come up huge for the Nationals has been Anibal Sanchez. It’s a testament to how strong those three have been throughout the playoffs that a guy who had everybody on “No-Hitter Alert” during the NLCS isn’t a lock to get a start in the World Series.
However, if the Nationals do turn to Sanchez then they can at least be confident that he’ll keep up the same level of pitching that the Nats and their fans have become used to during this postseason. Also, he’s got World Series experience under his belt — he went seven innings in Game 3 of the 2012 Fall Classic and only gave up two runs while striking out eight batters. The Detroit Tigers happened to lose that game to the San Francisco Giants, but it’s hard for a pitcher to lead his team to victory when said team scores a grand total of zero runs.
This is always the time of year where unsung heroes become the legends that you talk about in the future — even if it’s in the vein of “Hey, do you remember this guy?” If Anibal Sanchez is called upon again, maybe he’ll deliver a start that puts him in that particular territory.

108 Counterintuitive Things QA People Know About The Field Of Software Testing

Counterintuitive things about testing #1: in general a series of positive integers might start counting from 0 or from 1 there is no way to know up front.
Counterintuitive things about testing #2: tight coupling is good.
Counterintuitive things about testing #3: it's good when something is known to be broken.
Counterintuitive things about testing #4: there is almost no opportunity to learn from success. Ever.
Counterintuitive things about testing #5: when you build an MVP it starts out broken not with minimal working functionality.
Counterintuitive things about testing #6: service-oriented-architecture would be the worst thing you could possibly do.
Counterintuitive things about testing #7: there are almost no hard technical problems in the field that are worth solving.
Counterintuitive things about testing #8: by spending 50% of your time NOT writing prod code (but tests instead) you can INCREASE your velocity.
Counterintuitive things about testing #9: “slow is smooth, smooth is fast.” -- Navy SEAL aphorism
Counterintuitive things about testing #10: at a certain level, gathering details and investigating “root cause” becomes detrimental.
Counterintuitive things about testing #11: you can never find all the bugs.
Counterintuitive things about testing #12: there will always be outages and P1 bugs in production no matter how you “manage quality”.
Counterintuitive things about testing #13: so many, many tools or practices are “each necessary but only jointly sufficient” when paired with many, many other tools and practices.
Counterintuitive things about testing #14: catching a bug in production is not intrinsically “worse” than catching it in a QA environment.
Counterintuitive things about testing #15: the same bug almost never “reoccurs” so most “regression testing” is pure waste.
Counterintuitive things about testing #16: planning only gets you so far because the worst incident is the one you can't plan for.
Counterintuitive things about testing #17: different software methodologies all pretty much use the exact same approach to testing.
Counterintuitive things about testing #18: “agile” has almost nothing to do with testing software.
Counterintuitive things about testing #19: most allegedly-intractable problems can be solved by the “extract parameter” refactoring.
Counterintuitive things about testing #20: “black box” is a political designation and has no technical meaning.
Counterintuitive things about testing #21: writing tests for your own code is a design activity not a coding activity.
Counterintuitive things about testing #22: “past performance is no guarantee of future success” thus nearly all regression testing waste.
Counterintuitive things about testing #23: there are well-defined infinite classes of bugs that can not be caught except in production.
Counterintuitive things about testing #24: class Breaks are hugely valuable, Instance Breaks are almost entirely useless.
Counterintuitive things about testing #25: “carefulness” and “caution” are not relevant when thinking about how to reduce the incidence or impact of production incidents!
Counterintuitive things about testing #26: studious attention to boring details is the core competency of the field.
Counterintuitive things about testing #27: “flaky tests” indicate a problem in the AU and almost never in the tests that appear flaky.
Counterintuitive things about testing #28: no matter how fragile you think your GUI tests are, they're way more fragile than that.
Counterintuitive things about testing #29: GUI tests “breaking” when the UI changes is a good thing.
Counterintuitive things about testing #30: if your unit tests don't break on trivial code changes you are doing it wrong.
Counterintuitive things about testing #31: on a Web site with 1 million visits per week,a one-in-a-million event can occur once a week.
Counterintuitive things about testing #32: predicting the future is impossible, even if you have data.
Counterintuitive things about testing #33: it's normal for people become enraged when you tell them you can't predict the future.
Counterintuitive things about testing #34: you have to screen employers to make sure they don't think they're hiring a psychic.
Counterintuitive things about testing #35: hindsight is dangerous and should not be used.
Counterintuitive things about testing #36: careful planning and deep risk analysis are the enemies of effective testing.
Counterintuitive things about testing #37: there are not a multitude of different ways that all result in good testing. Testing is HARD.
Counterintuitive things about testing #38: you can punt on the Halting Problem in production but in test it's a hard constraint.
Counterintuitive things about testing #39: computer science has barely anything to say about software testing in practice nor in theory.
Counterintuitive things about testing #40: some of the most common problems in testing do not have solutions.
Counterintuitive things about testing #41: “don't build a platform and don't solve the general case” – Tom Igoe.
Counterintuitive things about testing #42: reusable code is a liability to the point it's better to avoid it if you can.
Counterintuitive things about testing #43: no one tests their backups, even people who think they test their backups.
Counterintuitive things about testing #44: there is ZERO correlation between “being careful” and fewer bugs in production.
Counterintuitive things about testing #45: slowing releases down to allow more time for QA generally makes production MORE buggy not less.
Counterintuitive things about testing #46: “zero bugs in production” is not a goal it is an admission of total ignorance about Safety-II.
Counterintuitive things about testing #47: most of the original work in test was finished by the 1980s. It is not a rapidly evolving field.
Counterintuitive things about testing #48: writing tests for bugs that are fixed does NOT correlate with catching new bugs when they arise.
Counterintuitive things about testing #49: there's no correlation between the number of tests performed per release and the number of bugs that will subsequently be found in production.
Counterintuitive things about testing #50: it is absolutely impossible to build a granularly accurate copy of your production system(s).
Counterintuitive things about testing #51: granular and/or comprehensive documentation of a nontrivial Web site is demonstrably impossible.
Counterintuitive things about testing #52: people say things like “this problem has no solution” and expect to be taken seriously.
Counterintuitive things about testing #53: there is no such thing as a simple GUI.
Counterintuitive things about testing #54: you may know how to test MVC architecture but almost no one builds MVC architecture.
Counterintuitive things about testing #55: one more layer of abstraction is hardly ever the solution to one of your problems.
Counterintuitive things about testing #56: a lot of the time you find yourself solving the problem of one too MANY layers of abstraction.
Counterintuitive things about testing #57: under every reliable unit test there is a finite state machine architecture.
Counterintuitive things about testing #58: if you can't draw the underlying state machine good luck implementing the test (automated OR manual).
Counterintuitive things about testing #59: if your plan is too grand to fit on a single sheet of A5 paper, good luck implementing that test.
Counterintuitive things about testing #60: random numbers have no place here. Keep your PRNG in your pants at all times.
Counterintuitive things about testing #61: a test you cannot trust is worse than useless BUT production code you can't trust may makes you rich.
Counterintuitive things about testing #62: exceptions are the only interesting thing happening, unlike prod where there's lots to think about.
Counterintuitive things about testing #63: it's surprisingly hard to interpret a stack trace when you are under pressure.
Counterintuitive things about testing #64: static analysis is more valuable than testing and should be implemented first.
Counterintuitive things about testing #65: sufficiently advanced fixing-it-in-production is indistinguishable from not-breaking-it-at-all.
Counterintuitive things about testing #66: if no one ever finds out about the bug then the bug never existed in the first place.
Counterintuitive things about testing #67: the more changes you make to production the safer you are overall regardless of test coverage.
Counterintuitive things about testing #68: there are many kinds of test coverage metrics and none of them have any intrinsic significance. NONE.
Counterintuitive things about testing #69: there are a lot of phenomena in test that we know exist but have not learned to measure yet.
Counterintuitive things about testing #70: sometimes sleep() is your best and only option.
Counterintuitive things about testing #71: every testing framework is a pile of hacks with nothing at the bottom of the pile /ht @undees.
Counterintuitive things about testing #72: @ronjeffries was right: creating “nothing” takes more effort than you would think.
Counterintuitive things about testing #73: for any complex system, you cannot ‘reset' it to a previous state. This can be shown mathematically.
Counterintuitive things about testing #74: the full state of a Web site at any given time is demonstrably not knowable.
Counterintuitive things about testing #75: the worst problems in software have nothing to do with code or with frameworks or with methodologies.
Counterintuitive things about testing #76: given the right conditions, all software methodologies work equally well.
Counterintuitive things about testing #77: the part(s) of the Web that is “a little bit broken” are more than a little bit broken.
Counterintuitive things about testing #78: it does not make any logical sense to assert against the activity of any given stream of packets.
Counterintuitive things about testing #79: there is no intrinsically significant relationship between SCM history and “last known good state”.
Counterintuitive things about testing #80: it's faster to rewrite untested code (this time with tests) than it is to retrofit tests to it.
Counterintuitive things about testing #81: quality takes time and is expensive no matter how lean / agile you are in other areas.
Counterintuitive things about testing #82: just because a test was useful in the past doesn't mean it's still useful now.
Counterintuitive things about testing #83: bugs cluster at the interfaces, bugs are not distributed randomly.
Counterintuitive things about testing #84: there's more time grains in 1 year of compute time than there are seconds in the age of the universe.
Counterintuitive things about testing #85: no computer can effectively test another computer in any general way.
Counterintuitive things about testing #86: automated fault detection is only possible in very limited cases, it does not generalize.
Counterintuitive things about testing #87: translating a manual test into an automated test is generally not a good idea.
Counterintuitive things about testing #88: even if you could provide up-to-date documentation (you can't) no one would read it.
Counterintuitive things about testing #89: you can always release mostly-working code without writing any tests for it.
Counterintuitive things about testing #90: most managers are terrified that “too much testing” will fuck up their release velocity.
Counterintuitive things about testing #91: testing is generally seen as easier than “regular programming” even though the opposite is true.
Counterintuitive things about testing #92: it's a rare team that can listen to criticism of their codebase without taking it personally.
Counterintuitive things about testing #93: more testing doesn't correlate with better quality, less testing doesn't correlate with worse quality.
Counterintuitive things about testing #94: you can ignore all the rules about code quality and still ship high quality code. It is possible.
Counterintuitive things about testing #95: “high quality software” cannot be directly quantified in any meaningful way.
Counterintuitive things about testing #96: if you don't know how a test works it's not just useless it's immediately dangerous.
Counterintuitive things about testing #97: it is always possible to think of numerous potentially-useful test case that cannot be implemented.
Counterintuitive things about testing #98: abstractions leak. All of them leak. The fact that there is certainly an exception that proves the rule here only goes to show that abstractions leak without any exceptions.
Counterintuitive things about testing #99: errors are not distributed at all evenly in the codebase but cluster in predictable ways.
Counterintuitive things about testing #100: the more people have edited file the more likely it is there's a bug you haven't found in that file.
Counterintuitive things about testing #101: the more often a line is edited the more likely it is that line will contain an error.
Counterintuitive things about testing #102: the people who commit the most code tend to contribute to the most change related outages.
Counterintuitive things about testing #103: increased oversight is not a solution to the problem of non-optimal human behavior.
Counterintuitive things about testing #104: the only source of “production-like data” is actual production data.
Counterintuitive things about testing #105: there is no known way to generate test data that has all the same characteristics as prod data.
Counterintuitive things about testing #106: shared ownership of code leads directly to a tragedy of the commons no matter how “aligned” the team is in other areas.
Counterintuitive things about testing #107: “fully tested” is an entirely arbitrary designation.
Counterintuitive things about testing #108: deploying code and releasing a feature are semantically orthogonal, any coupling is purely incidental.
EDITED March 12 2017
When I originally published this list, it was as a tweetstorm, where every point was prefixed with the caveat that I was talking specifically about testing and NOT ABOUT SOFTWARE IN GENERAL. I was not talking in the general way that (as a software engineer) I would commonly discuss general software topics such as tech stacks and spherical horses.
I have amended the post so that each point looks as it did in the original tweetstorm. I believe this should clear up most if not all of the confusion here. Thank to those Redditors and those other Redditors plus all the other others, who pointed out the lack of clarity of the original post! That's what crowd-curated content is all about.
Post Script (as of March 13 2017 just after the witch's hour)
If I said I'd credit you personally for feedback, I will. I'm still churning through all the responses it's been amazing but I'm not nearly done. This edit represents the FIRST in a SERIES of corrections that came from the hive mind. Thanks for your patience! More edits are in the pipe!

Hundreds of thousands of workers face redundancy because insurance giants are refusing to pay out in a £1 billion ‘coronavirus cover con’. Tens of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses are at risk of bankruptcy because of the ‘disgraceful’ and ‘immoral’ attempt to wriggle out of releasing the vital funds. This is despite them having paid for business interruption insurance policies promising them financial protection against closure due to outbreaks of a contagious disease. Tens of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses are at risk of bankruptcy because of the ‘disgraceful’ and ‘immoral’ attempt to wriggle out of releasing the vital funds. (Stock image) Campaigners yesterday called for the Chancellor to intervene urgently, warning that firms face going bust every day because of the lack of cashflow to keep them afloat. Taxpayers are footing a huge part of the bill for the non-payments, which has forced companies to put more staff on furlough. And the cost to the public purse could skyrocket as more and more businesses face bankruptcy without the lifeline of the insurance payouts. Over the past decade some companies have paid more than £40,000 for the business interruption cover — which they chose because it was promoted as being wide-ranging — but are now not receiving a penny. Their premiums helped drive huge profits for the insurance firms and vast rewards for their bosses — with the chief executive of Lloyd’s of London underwriter Hiscox making more than £2.5 million in the past two years alone. Small-business owners say the refusal to pay their claims is an exceptionally ‘bitter betrayal’ because Hiscox boasts that it offers its clients ‘peace of mind, by providing advice, expertise, a safety net or simply an arm around them when they need it most’. Its stated company values also include ‘integrity’ and ‘doing the right thing, however hard’ and, just six months ago, CEO Bronek Masojada insisted: ‘Paying claims is what we are here for.’ Theresa May’s hairdressers facing disaster A family hairdressing business that has operated for more than 50 years faces bankruptcy if it does not receive its insurance payout. Three generations of the Giamattei clan run the Marc Antoni salon chain that now employs 60 staff and boasts former PM Theresa May as a customer. The company has been paying premiums to Hiscox via a broker for about a decade on each of their branches in Fleet, Henley on Thames, Woodley, Wokingham, Caversham and Bracknell. Three generations of the Giamattei clan run the Marc Antoni salon chain that now employs 60 staff and boasts former PM Theresa May as a customer Last year the total bill was £4,304, which included cover for closure caused by ‘an occurrence of notifiable human disease’. But despite weeks of inquiries, they were told on April 17 that their claim had been rejected by the insurer, leaving them with a battle for survival. Director Julie Giamattei has had to take out a £300,000 loan to cover the rent costs of all of her salons, but with huge overheads it will still be a struggle to continue the business without the £500,000 payout they believe is due from the insurer. ‘It’s been awful, an absolute nightmare,’ she says. ‘We haven’t stopped. There have been many sleepless nights for the whole family. ‘The directors, all family, have put our houses up as personal guarantees on long leases and loans, and we could potentially lose our homes.’ They were told by their broker that the claim had been rejected because they closed the salons on the Saturday, two days before Boris Johnson announced the lockdown. Julie says: ‘We were trying to be responsible and stop the spread, like most other businesses were doing. ‘You can’t get any closer contact than being a hair stylist — but this is how they punish us for doing the right thing.’ The company was started by her father-in-law Bruno Giamattei in 1966. His four sons and their children also work in the salons. Julie adds: ‘We will keep fighting this battle for our staff and for all our wonderful customers.’ FTSE 100 giant RSA and Australia’s QBE are among several other firms under fire. Most business interruption policies only cover common hazards that can put a firm out of action, such as fire and flooding. But some specifically promise to cover disruption caused by infectious diseases. Despite this, insurance companies are rejecting claims, in some cases arguing that Covid-19 is not covered because it is a new disease, or that the impact of the Government lockdown is not included in the policy. Simon Ager, whose Northampton-based Pinnacle Climbing and Caving Centre faces huge challenges without the expected £100,000 insurance payout, has organised Hiscox Action Group which now has 500 members, most of whom have unpaid cover worth the same amount. ‘Our insurer’s trying to wriggle out of paying’ The boss of a family-run IT firm warned that taxpayers would end up footing the bill for his insurers refusal to pay out. James Gulliver, managing director of family-run Netmatters in Wymondham, Norfolk, has been forced to furlough more of the 70 staff because of Hiscox’s ‘immoral’ decision to refuse to pay the £100,000 he says they are due. He started the company with his brother Chris 12 years ago and has been paying Hiscox for business interruption and building insurance cover. James Gulliver (right) started Netmatters with his brother Chris (left) 12 years ago and has been paying Hiscox for business interruption and building insurance cover He says: ‘We built up the business gradually and have always been very risk-adverse, taking out insurance to cover us if the worst did happen. ‘Now I just think, why did we bother?’ He said coronavirus is without question the worst thing his business has had to deal with. He adds: ‘It’s terrifying what has happened. But everyone else — customers, staff, suppliers and the Government — has tried to do their best in these troubled times. ‘Our insurer is the only bad guy, trying to wriggle out of any liability. ‘It’s really not what you expect from a supposedly reputable insurer. ‘Our No 1 goal is to keep all our staff in jobs, and we have got a plan in place to do this, but this has meant we had to furlough more staff at more expense to the taxpayer. ‘The whole country is paying for this failure by the insurance company to pay up, not just the businesses directly impacted.’ The company’s policy stated Hiscox would pay out if the company was unable to use its premises due to outbreak of ‘any human infectious or human contagious disease’ of which the local authority had been notified. But when they requested the payout they were told that this cover would only apply when there was an incident within a one-mile radius of the insured premises which led to official measures that prevented entry. The insurer said an example would be where the police cordon off the area surrounding a riot or a hotel is evacuated by the police following a nearby gas leak or fire. ‘The multitude of wide-ranging measures the Government is taking to contain the coronavirus pandemic are very different in nature,’ a spokesman explains. James says: ‘This makes no sense. It’s there in black and white that we would be covered, but they are trying to say ‘we didn’t really mean that’. ‘It’s morally wrong. A lot of firms will probably go out of business because this was their lifeline. ‘Many smaller companies could not survive without the hundred grand.’ The group is bringing a case against the insurer with law firm Mishcon de Reya. Mr Ager says tens of thousands of jobs are at risk among the companies in his group alone if the payouts do not start soon. He adds: ‘It seems the only people Hiscox is interested in serving is their shareholders. Brokers promoted the Hiscox policy because it has a wide range of cover — that’s why we bought it. ‘If insurers don’t have to comply with basic contract law and can effectively change the policy when it suits, why should anyone ever buy insurance?’ The Financial Conduct Authority says it intends to present a judge with a sample of the most frequently used policy wordings from a range of different insurers which ‘are giving rise to uncertainty’. But Mr Ager says: ‘Court action could drag on for months and by the time they get this resolved thousands of small business might have gone bust. It doesn’t need a long court battle. Every lawyer we have shown this to has said we have a clear cut case.’ Simon Sloane, a lawyer with Fieldfisher who is acting on behalf of clients in dispute with Hiscox, RSA and QBE, says: ‘This insurance would have been in their premium. It was part of the deal, so the insurance companies should now pay up. Climbing centre facing cliff edge A climbing centre is facing a financial mountain to climb after being refused a ‘vital’ £100,000 insurance payment. Father-of-two Simon Ager says the Pinnacle Climbing Centre, which he runs with his wife Cee, currently has ‘zero income but lots of costs’ after being forced to shut during lockdown. Simon Ager says the Pinnacle Climbing Centre currently has ‘zero income but lots of costs’ after being forced to shut during lockdown He says: ‘It’s a small business but I’ve always tried to run it responsibly, which included buying good insurance to protect the company, our staff and the people we served.’ He thought the Northampton-based company, which has ten full-time staff and 25 freelancers, would be covered because he had a policy including financial losses for businesses unable to trade following ‘an occurrence of any human infectious or human contagious disease’. But despite Chancellor Rishi Sunak saying the Government’s initial recommendation for people not to visit leisure businesses was enough to satisfy insurance claims, Hiscox rejected the claim. Simon says: ‘The brokers promoted this policy because it has a wide range of cover.’ ‘But at the moment there is a blanket refusal by insurers because they always fight where they don’t want to set a precedent. Even if they agree in the end, many businesses will have gone under by then.’ Most companies with this form of business interruption insurance would be entitled to £100,000, meaning that for 10,000 businesses the total owed would be £1 billion. A Hiscox spokesman says: ‘We understand these are incredibly difficult times for businesses and we are paying claims covered by the policies we issue fairly and quickly. ‘We don’t comment on individual claims but, as the Financial Conduct Authority has said, most UK small business policies across the industry do not cover pandemics. Along with the Association of British Insurers, we welcome the FCA’s recent initiative to accelerate resolution of disputes.’ The boss making a mint Just six months ago he insisted: ‘Paying claims is what we are here for.’ Today, the multi-millionaire chief executive of one of the UK’s oldest and most respected insurance companies is accused of abandoning thousands of long-serving customers at the time they need him the most. In the past two years alone, Bronek Masojada has earned more than £2.5 million running the 119-year-old Lloyd’s-listed Hiscox. Oxford-educated Mr Masojada became chief executive of the company in 2000 and has overseen a remarkable success story. Last year it had gross premiums worth £3.2 billion and enjoyed pre-tax profits of around £153 million over the past two years. It employs more than 3,300 people in 14 countries. The firm’s London offices are festooned in fine art, including a Damien Hirst skull by the boardroom and a Polly Morgan piece depicting a stuffed squirrel squeezed into a champagne glass. The company is officially based in the corporate tax haven of Bermuda. In the UK, South African-born Mr Masojada and his wife Jane live in a £1.5 million house in Woldingham, Surrey. An FCA spokesman says: ‘Our legal action . . . is the quickest route to clarity and by covering multiple policies and insurers, it will also be of most use across the market.’ An Association of British Insurers spokesman says: ‘Unfortunately, no country in the world has an insurance market that is able to offer widespread pandemic cover.’ Policy wording versus reality: Hiscox Covers: ‘Your inability to use the insured premises due to restrictions imposed by a public authority during the period of insurance following… an occurrence of any human infectious or human contagious disease, an outbreak of which must be notified to the local authority.’ What it told claimants: ‘The restrictions the Government has imposed are part of its national response to reduce the impact of the coronavirus pandemic; they were not issued following or in response to ‘an occurrence’ at any specific location, placing them outside the scope of the policy.’ QBE Covers: ‘Any human infectious or human contagious disease . . . an outbreak of which the local authority has stipulated shall be notified to them . . . within a 25-mile radius’ [of the premises.] What it told claimants: Cover only provided ‘where loss is in consequence of the occurrence of Covid-19 at the relevant locations and not where losses are in consequence of . . . wide-scale government measures.’ RSA Covers: Loss as a result of closure or restrictions placed on the premises as a result of a notifiable human disease manifesting itself at the premises or within a radius of 25 miles. What it told claimants: Requires evidence of losses due to a specific local outbreak that led directly to closure or restrictions. The policy does not cover losses arising from a general reduction in the number of bookings or increased cancellations as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Three Things I Learned From My Estate Planning Lawyer Everyone Should Do
My estate planning lawyer said something interesting before I decided to hire her. “People who aren’t rich might need estate planning more than rich people because they might not be able to afford to pay probate fees in the case of an untimely death.”
Leave it to the US court system to make the distribution of your assets upon death, cumbersome and costly. Without a will or a Revocable Living Trust, beneficiaries will pay anywhere from 3% – 8% of the assets in fees in probate and could take potentially a year or longer for all assets to be properly distributed.
Probate fees include: personal representative fees, court fees, attorney’s fees, accounting fees, appraisal and business evaluation fees, bond fees, and other miscellaneous fees.
In comparison, settling a Revocable Living Trust on average “only” costs between 1% – 3% of assets. But in addition to a clear directive of where your assets are to go, another benefit of a Revocable Living Trust is privacy. As a Stealth Wealth practitioner, the last thing you want is everybody to see what you had and what you’re giving.
Think about the type of infighting that may happen amongst your beneficiaries if they deem your gifts unfair. Think about all the scrutiny your child might get if people find out she gets a large sum of money before adulthood. She just lost a parent or two for goodness sake. As a parent, the last thing you want is for your children to be judged by others.
Estate Planning Realizations
Once you have a child, creating a clear will and setting up a Revocable Living Trust is the responsible thing to do. Privacy, clarity, cost savings and succession planning are all important benefits.
Here are three other realizations that came out of my estate planning session all of you should probably follow. I already paid the lawyer thousands of dollars in fees, so you might as well take advantage.
1) You must forecast your death. Time is our greatest asset. This truth is no more apparent than when you’re talking to a lawyer about death. In my 20s and 30s, I thought that if I could live a healthy life until 60, I’d die a satisfied man. Leaving the workforce at age 34 was my way of maximizing the probability of living life with as little regret as possible. I kept thinking how horrible it would be to work at a job I no longer loved until 60 and then dying soon thereafter.
Now that I’m a father, I wish to prolong my mortality until at least 75. My new goal is to live long enough to see my 19-month-old son grow up to be a wonderful, independent man with a life partner. Leaving this world knowing someone loves him as much as his mother and I do will let us die in peace. As a result, my wife and I are taking more action to live healthier lives.
The average life expectancy for those born in 2018 in the United States is 76 for males and 81 for females. Although we are living longer, you’ll soon find out that life is not nearly as long as you want it to be. At my age, I’ll be damned if I waste a single day doing something I don’t absolutely don’t want to do.
2) You must forecast your wealth and estate tax laws. Time is also our greatest asset for creating wealth due to the power of compounding. You will be pleasantly surprised by how much you can accumulate over an extended period of time through diligent savings and reasonable returns. Once you’ve made your best assumptions on how much wealth you will have accumulated by the time you die, you must then forecast the lifetime gift tax exemption and the death tax rate at the time of your passing.
For example, in 2019 the lifetime gift tax exemption is $11,400,000. The top marginal tax rate remains at 40%. If you die in 2019 with $21,400,000 in wealth to pass on, your tax bill will be $4,000,000 ($21.4M – $11.4M = $10M X 40%).
On the other hand, if you die in 2030 with $20,000,000 when the lifetime gift tax exemption has declined to $5,000,000 and the death tax rate has risen to 50%, then your inheritor’s tax bill will be $7,500,000 ($20M – $5M = $15M X 50%). That is a shocking amount of taxes to pay on top of the taxes you already paid to accumulate such wealth.
Based on history, you can see from the chart that currently, we are at the highest estate tax exemption with the lowest death tax rate since 1997. It may be logical to assume a continued increase in the estate tax exemption and a continued decrease in the estate tax rate given the 22-year trend.
However, the doubling from 2017 to 2018 is an outlier. Therefore, it is also reasonable to anticipate an estate tax exemption decline and/or estate tax rate increase after the Tax Cut And Jobs Act expires in 2025.
3) You must give and spend more while living. In the scenario above where your inheritor must pay a $4,000,000 tax bill, unless your inheritors are already wealthy, they may be forced to sell some of your assets to pay for the tax liability. If part of your estate is your business that you want to continue long after you’re gone, then you may have some problems.
Would you rather pay a $4,000,000 tax bill to the government on assets you already paid taxes on or donate the same $4,000,000 to charity while you’re still alive and see how much good your gift will do?
Would you rather pay a $4,000,000 tax bill or spend more money on yourself and loved ones? If there is a high likelihood your estate will be worth more than the lifetime tax exemption amount, it seems obviously better to utilize your wealth while living, rather than after death.
Let’s say it takes 20 years to get to a $21,400,000 estate from $5,000,000 currently using $200,000 annual contributions and a 5% compound annual growth rate. In 20 years, the estate tax exemption is still $11,400,000 at a 40% death tax rate.
A better strategy would be to not save $200,000 a year, but spend $200,000 a year on charity and loved ones for the next 20 years. Without saving a single penny every year, you would still end up with $13,266,000 at a 5% compound annual growth rate. Therefore, your death tax would be a more reasonable $746,400.
One common strategy to utilize for estate tax liability is life insurance. You can even set up a life insurance revocable trust so it doesn’t count toward your estate exemption amount. If a large part of your estate includes a business you don’t want to sell to pay for estate taxes, then using life insurance or other liquid assets is a solution.
Estate Planning And Consumption Smoothing
People who have been saving and investing for so long often overestimate how much they’ll need to feel comfortable. I firmly believe the vast majority of financially savvy people will die with too much. This lack of financial clarity is the reason why everyone needs to do a better job at forecasting their wealth so they can consume it more smoothly while still alive.
If the estate tax exemption amount decreases or the death tax rate increases or both, then there’s even more reason to spend your money now while living. Unless you’re incredibly stingy, hoarding much more than the estate tax exemption limit upon death makes zero sense.
My estate planning lawyer really opened my eyes to how overly frugal I am. From driving an economical car for 13 years to downsizing our home in 2014, our expenses are where they were in our 20s. Yet, our income has grown. Based on our forecasts, there is a high likelihood that we will have to pay estate taxes at our current rate.
To figure out how much more we could spend today in order to avoid paying estate taxes, I simply logged onto Personal Capital and ran a Retirement Planning calculation after inputting some income and expense assumptions.
For illustrative purposes, the output shows that using a $1,225,000 investment portfolio, I have a 99% chance of reaching my planned monthly retirement spend of $12,500 starting at age 50. The portfolio has a projected spending ability of $18,416 a month based on its current asset allocation.
With almost a $6,000/month overage on how much I can spend starting at age 50 in retirement, I plan to up my spending by $1,500 a month starting next year, so long as the economy doesn’t go into a recession. If our wealth increases the following year, we’ll up our spending even more, but still maintain a comfortable buffer based on what the retirement planner spits out.
This additional spending budget may help us get over our reluctance to pay for private school tuition if our son doesn’t win the SF public school lottery. Just doing this estate planning exercise makes me feel much better about spending more money overall. I’m confident that once you run your numbers, you’ll be able to start spending more freely as well.
If you have dependents, please write out a will and/or create a revocable living trust. Not only will you better protect your loved ones, but you’ll also learn a lot more about yourself in the process.
For those of you who’ve gone through the estate planning process, what else did you learn about yourself and about estate planning laws? Why do people hoard so much more than the estate tax exemption amounts? Wouldn’t it be better to spend and give while alive than after death?

"Can having your car insurance cancelled lower your credit score?
My friend just talked to some other people that have the same card (Cabela's Visa) and they had the same thing happen to them. They all have good credit and pay all their bills on time and usually in full, but Cabela's dropped their credit limits drastically. I think it is just Cabela's. Thanks to everyone that answered anyway. It turned out to be a whole different issue.

I'v been saving up some money now and want to get a used car when i turn 21. had my license since 16 I'm debating heavily whether to get 2008 bmw 335i coupe or 2008 nissan gtr. i'm sure nissan gtr insurance and maintenance would cost a lot but about how much should I be expecting? iv been searching around and this is the number i got to guess but iono 4000 a year for insurance and 2000 a year for maintence...is that a good estimate? if it's more than that, i don't think i should really get one. should i just keep saving and buy a 335i and treat myself with a nicer one after college? or should i just go all out right now?""

Insurance company denies the damages?
my car has been involved in an rear end crash and the insurance company of the other party denies some of the damages , that are actually done because of the accident. the auto body shop gave me an estimate of 4 to 5 000 $ . my car doesnot cost that much . the insurance company is offering only 633 $ and disagrees with me to total the car . there was no damage prior to the accident made to the car on the rear end side. they argue that the other car that hit me does not have even a dent then how come my car have this much damages. i know that my car did not had n e damage on the rear before the accidednt. based on the automobile source they think that the actual cash value of the car is 1900 , and they have didcted all other damges , that are not because of an accident. please guide me what i should do in this case.""

Why is our group health insurance so much more expensive than getting an individual plan privately?
My husband gets insurance through his work, and they take out $170 a week (he gets paid weekly). So that totals about $730 a month for us and our kids plus maternity benefits. What confuses me is if we were to drop that insurance and get an individual plan with the same company, same deductible, same co-pay, including maternity benefits (exactly the same plan) it would run us about $440 a month. I thought that the whole point of getting on a group plan was that it would be cheaper. I would be okay with it being the same as private but it makes absolutely zero sense to me that it would be almost twice as much... Anybody want to explain? Or are they just screwing us over?""

Insurance totalling my car looks suspicious?
At this point I regret making a claim and wish i could turn back the clock. I am being forced into a box and it looks shady. Three weeks ago my 2005 Cadillac STS was involved in a parking lot flood where the water rose and filled the floors of my car by about 4 inches. All us neighbors had cleaning parties using a wet vac and baking and toweling are cars in the sun over the next few days letting our vehicles dry out. On my car everything works like a dream as it did before with the exception of a 'check stability control' notice that comes on when I start the car. I have been driving the car fine since the flood and decided maybe I should make a claim to fix this error that pops up on the dash when i start the car. From the time I dropped it off at the dealer it has been all negative. Right away the dealer was negative and telling me it's the end of the world with my car, everything is ruined and it will probably be a total loss. He got the adjuster for my insurance company out there and it looks like it will be put in to the total loss category. No i am just asking the insurance company to forget everything and drop the claim because the damage is not that extreme and i dont want to lose my car. I am told at this point it is too late. Is that true? My neighbors are floored by this, i have been driving it around for a few weeks just fine and the car still looks new With only 62000 miles on it. I can't help from thinking that something suspicious is going on here. Do they stand to make a nice profit by totalling my vehicle and then replacing one module for a 1000 or so and having a perfect car with all systems working? Also the lady from the claims office said the car had to be 80% damaged for it to be a total loss. I asked her if this was based on speculative problems that they think may occur in the future because of the water, or based on actual damage now? She said it had to be actual damage now but couldn't give me any details from the adjuster yet. Can I demand that the adjuster list everything that he thinks has been damaged to my car (which I am convinced he will have to be creative to do so)? The car as i said drives wonderful, I checked the fluids on my own (fine), and the car looks new. Do I have any recourse here? I just want the car fixed for the one problem, i dont want to lose the car, and at this point I don't even care about having insurance fix the one problem, but again I am told it is too late to go backwards and drop this entire issue. I almost have an inclination to report this because it looks so shady. No reasonable person would look at, and drive this car and consider it a total loss. What is the agenda of the insurance company and cadillac dealer here? Something smells foul with this situation.""

Not sure how much condo insurance to get?
I'm in the process of buying a condo, and I need to have condo insurance set up. However, I'm not really sure how much insurance I need on a condo. The homeowners association covers everything on the outside, so I would only need to cover walls-in. This is what I've come up with after doing a quote: Contents Amount: $50,000 Building Property Coverage: $15,000 Condominium Loss Assessments: $1,000 Deductible: $500 Earthquake Deductible: 2% Personal Liability: $300,000 Medical Payments to Others: $1,000 The condo is selling for $125,900. I really don't have a lot of furniture, and what I do have is all hand-me-downs. I have a four year old, so all the furniture and stuff that comes along with having a kid. I don't have really nice jewelry. I have a 32inch hd tv, computer (i paid 150 for it, so nothing fancy lol), and a kindle fire, wii....that's about it for electronics. I want to make sure I have enough coverage if something happens with counters/floor/walls/etc, but I don't want to be unnecessarily paying a high insurance bill. Any suggestions? Help with insurance claim on exotic sports car?
My car ---an exotic sports model--- was damaged in a parking lot collision tonight. (My car was parked and struck by a guy who wasn't looking ahead.) Even if a 100% repair can be effected, the value of the car will be forever diminished because of the car's blemished history. People who buy these cars simply will not pay top dollar if the history shows any sort of collision repair. Of course the other guy's insurance is not going to want to give me an extra few grand to cover my eventual loss. What can I do to be covered? Would I have to sue for something like that? Can having your car insurance cancelled lower your credit score?
My friend just talked to some other people that have the same card (Cabela's Visa) and they had the same thing happen to them. They all have good credit and pay all their bills on time and usually in full, but Cabela's dropped their credit limits drastically. I think it is just Cabela's. Thanks to everyone that answered anyway. It turned out to be a whole different issue.

Is my health insurance tax deductible?
I worked for 4 different employers in 2012. I was a full time W2 for two and a contractual W2 for 2. When I lost my full time W2 job in January I bought my own health insurance. Then I contracted for about 8 months (W2). They offered my insurance but mine was less expensive and better coverage. Then I got a full time W2 job and opted out of their health insurance because my private coverage was better and cheaper. At what points, if any, was my health insurance tax deductible? What insurance companies will insure someone with a DUI on his record?
My boyfriend and I have our car and house insured under State Farm, but apparently they have a zero tolerance policy and have dropped him from the insurance. My agent was saying something about 're-evaluating' at some point in the future, but he was being so rude to me about it (I wasn't the offender) that I didn't really listen, and have no interest in staying with State Farm (at least with that agent). I assume if State Farm has a 'zero-tolerance policy,' they're not the only company that does, so what companies would insure us? Car Insurance Claim Help?
Car Insurance Claim Help? On the 4/7/2011 I was at a set of traffic lights that was (RED) of my way to the shops. As the lights went green I begin to move off slowly as I did another car came from the left of me and tried to turn right as he speed up he crashed into the drivers side of the car. He clearly jumped a red light (Clearly Seen on CCTV). I was in total shock at the time! After he crashed into my car he went to drive off by reversing, I jumped out of my car to stood in his was so he could not drive off the witness behind me called the police while I was stopping his from driving off he started to drive forwards trying to me me out the way. After the driver spoke to the police on the phone, he then gave me his Name, Phone number and Insurance information. The next day I called my insurance company they was vary helpful and I believe the clam would be settled in my favor as I had CCTV of the crash as I had a camera inside of my car and a witness that was behind my car at the time of the crash. After nearly 4Months I have now revived a letter stating that the claim has been closed on a Without Prejudice Basis. When I contacted Aviva to see what the 3rd party has not accepted full liability they said it was dealt with like this as the 3rd party who crashed into me was not responding to and calls or letters that have send him. Ok. i have a direct debit set up with swinton for my car insurance every 26th of the month. This december I got paid on the 18th and i have left no money in there for my direct debit to come out when they took it out on 29th decemeber. I didnt realise this happened until friday 29th january and got a phonecall form them telling me they are cancelling my car insurance. I was angry as I had no letters to confirm this and no phonecalls. My phone is broken and I had changed my address (which i have given them about 10 times) they said there was nothing i could do and cancelled my insurance. They have now told me that because i havent paid that its been sent to the debt collectors and is a criminal offence!!! My argument is they did not change my address even after I had told them time after time. Is there anything I can do, or if anyone has any advice what I do now. Should I wait until I am 25 or 26 to start driving a car again? Is it true about Insurance costs? Please read?
Hello, I am 21 and in college. I am in Northeast Illinois. I have not driven a car since I was 17. This is because I did miserably in driver education. I passed the classroom, so technically I passed driver ed, but the driving I failed miserably. My parents won't let me be behind the wheel of their cars again. I talked with a friend of mine recently and she said that the cost of driving insurance in Illinois is dramatically less when a driver turns 25 or 26. I am thinking that maybe I should start driving again at age 25 or 26 so I can keep costs down (especially in a nasty economy like this country has right now). Now, here's the other thing, my dad has cancer (leukemia), he's the one who gives me rides to places, my mom doesn't want to give me rides because she is still angry at me for what I did when I was 17. She said to me You're not driving again, ever. You lied to me. You disobeyed our orders and was arrogant. You're done. I don't care about your behaviors anymore Yeah, she hasn't changed since what I did at age 17. My dad has a had time walking, sitting, standing, etc. He has mentioned a couple of times Its not a bad idea that maybe you should think about driving again, you will have to drive some time, son Then I think about the insurance cost and how much of a hassel it would be. So, should I do it? Should I wait until I am 25 or 26 to start driving again? Should I wait longer? It seems like my mom won't forgive me and my dad has this cancer making it hard on him. I don't know what to do. Thanks""

Insurance doesn't want to fix car?
Ok, So I have insurance through UAIC. I was not aware till the research i've done they are the biggest losers in the business. Here's my issue, my car was vandalized on november 12 of this year. I have full coverage insurance. Prior to insurance, we agreed to have photos taken by the local insurance so they can note any problem.. Car clear perfect which it was. No a scratch, ding or dent showroom conidition I would say at the time. I filed the claim the same day of the 12th of November. It took them 2weeks just to come estimate the car, estimate was 1500 and let me tell you. My smallest quote was 2900$ so immediately I was a little worried about it. Well I finally got a call back today on december 13th. Telling me the insurance estimator for them said the car had prior wear and tear. Which it was absolutely not! i treat my car great and have pictures to proof it. What can I do, and I see no point in full coverage with these guys! I don't know if i should be angry, do a legal matter or just cut my losses and switch back to liberty mutual""

Maternity related services considered inpatient for insurance?
Most individual plans (87%) do not offer maternity coverage. I was fortunate enough to still be covered under an old employer by paying COBRA, and a majority of my expenses were covered. I had twins and had to have a C-Section. So now that I know I'm most likely to have a C-Section again, and who knows, another set of twins! (complete surprise) and am still of child bearing age. I am now under an individual plan, that does not offer maternity coverage. I was reading under the 'Inpatient' services and it listed this: Unlimited coverage is provided for medically necessary physician and surgeon services, semi-private rooms, operating rooms and related facilities, intensive and coronary care units, laboratory, x-rays, radiology services and procedures, medications and biologicals, anesthesia, special duty nursing as prescribed, short-term rehabilitation services, nursing care, meals and special diets So anyone who has experience or knowledge, would something like a C-Section be covered under inpatient? Proof of insurance question?
The transmission went out of my car. A friend who does auto repair told me it would cost approx $1200 to fix. So I decided to scrap the car & get another. I cancelled insurance on old one & bought another 1 1/2 months later. The car was not driveable. Now I have to prove why I didn't have ins on the car and still had plates registered to it. I called & wrote a letter to the state and they said to send an estimate from an ASE cert. mechanic or tow bill or pictures. I don't have a tow bill. I didn't get out of the driveway. I don't need an ASE mechanic to tell me what is wrong w/the car and picutres of a transmission are stupid. I have received a written est from the guy and have statements from neighbors saying the car was not running. What more can I do?????? I don't want my license suspended.
Would my insurance still pay for this?
My car got hit the other day and I got an estimate for it. It'll cost $500 and it's just a long scratch. If I tried touching it up with car paint and whatever and it comes out looking like sh*t will the body shop still do it's work or would I have to pay for it since I messed with it?
An affordable car to purchase with cheapest insurance for a 17 y/o?
Hey, I'm 17 and looking to purchase my first car. Of course, insurance is a big issue for me. I was wondering what car would be a good buy where insurance wouldstill be cheap? I'm looking at spending around 500 for a second hand car, so all these new electric economic cars which cost thousands that google keep bringing up are too miuch for me. I heard about ford KA's, Nissan Micra's, Renault Clio's and Vauxhall Corsa's being good, however, when I look on insurance websites there's about 50 versions of each car with different engines, doors, years etc, and I don't have the slightest clue which version of the car would be the cheapest, other than having a smaller engine. I was wondering if anybody could provide me with the make and models of the cars which are the cheapest to insure, but are still well priced and can be picked up easily second hand. Thanks""

Getting out of a speeding ticket for insurance purposes?
Is there a way I can get out of a speeding/failure to meet at a stop sign ticket? I really don't care about paying the ticket or court costs at all, but I just can not, really, really, can not pay the extra insurance money. I am paying out of state tuition AND I am in Architecture. Architecture is SUCH an expensive major. The police officer (whose name I can't even read on the ticket because it is just a scribble) gave me a ticket for speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign. I have always been a great driver, I never speed, I always stop at stop signs, I don't drink/text/talk over the phone and drive, I always have my seatbelt on. This one time I absolutely needed to get home at 2am I decide to go a little faster and yup, of course I get a ticket. I don't want to lie, I was doing 36 on a 20 zone at the time, I admit it even though I honestly did not realize I was going at 36 I didn't' do it on purpose. I didn't think hey I'm just gonna go faster because no one is around , I really honestly did not notice I was going at 36. But I am not sure about the stop sign thing. Honestly I was not paying much attention because I drive through this stop sign everyday but I distinctly remember there was a car already at the stop sign coming from the left so I HAD to stop. There was absolutely no one else coming from any of the four sides, so I might have not stopped completely but I did slow down almost to a stop and then kept going. Then like I said I was going at 36 on a 20 zone. This was at 2 a clock in the morning when there was literally not a soul around. The police officer was practically hiding in a dark, empty parking lot and came out of no where. I really don't want to make excuses for myself. I know what I did was wrong and I'll admit it. But this is my first ticket, and I really don't want t have to pay so much more money on my insurance for a slip as small as this one. My boyfriend was with mi in the car if that means anything. I really don't know, I've never had a ticket before. I've been reading up on how to get out of a ticket, and a lot of people say it is good to talk to the officer, and I thought about doing it but the officer's name is not readable at all. He also completely misspelled my name. In Puerto Rico we use both my father's and mother's last names so I have two last names. Let's say my name is X, my father's last name is Y and my mother's is Z. In Puerto Rico it goes like X Y Z and since my license is from Puerto Rico that is how it is written in my license. But the police officer wrote X Z. So my name is wrong in the ticket. I don't know if that counts for anything, someone told me that if they misspell my name or the officer's it means the ticket is dropped. This seems unlikely but hey, like I said I really have no clue. Again, I don't want to make excuses for myself, but I just can't afford extra insurance costs. I just cant...""

Car insurance renewal - is it compulsory ?
I had accident earlier this year(few months ago) wasn't my fault and other side admitted it but they still haven't paid for damages so the case is still open. I have been told by my car insurance company that they don't know where is the problem but as final bill hasn't been paid as a result my car renewal will go up as my previous 4 years no claim will vanish for now. Apparently once the other side pays what they should then they reduce my monthly payments accordingly as they take no claims years(this is 5 th year into account.) My question is : 1. is this correct what I said so far(or been told) 2. Do I have to renew my car insurance which expired last week even if I don't drive my car which is safely parked on my driveway(off road) ? Can I pay later lets say next month ? this is due my finance difficulties and I hope that other side pays by then and so I pay much less insurance. Professional advice would be great ! Do you have to pay for a full year of car insurance if your car is written off part way through that year?
I pay my car insurance every month as a direct debit out of my bank account. My policy actually expires in March each year and I'm sent a renewal letter saying that if I wish to continue with my policy I just need to keep paying it monthly as I always have. Then come July my car was total written off. According to the insurance compay I still need to pay for a full years insurance, that is I need to pay all the insurance premiums up until March next year as this is when the policy expires. I figure if I don't have the car any more as it's a write off, and I'm able to cancelled the rego on it, why should I have to pay. I would have thought that if I'd paid a full years insurance in March that I would be entitled to a refund if my car was written off part way through the year. Any help would be appreciated.""

Car insurance help?!?! I need advice!?
I am 20 year old single male in los angeles, california. I just bought a used 1993 toyota corolla for 1500 with financial aid money, after a tune up and some minor repairs I have 300 left in my pocket. I don't have a job, but I was planning on using this car to help me get one asap. I still need to get my car smog tested which will set me back $50 and registered which will put me back $150 leaving me with about 100 left. I don't know what to do at this point, I didn't think it would be this much. If I don't register it within 10 days am I subjective to late fees? I bought this car hoping it would help me get a job. I can barely afford gas. I have no idea what to do. I was told I need to get insurance before I can register my vehicle, which has no plates. (I got the pink slip and all the paper work) My question is what should I do, what insurance is the cheapest. If I don't register it within 10 days will I have to pay late fees? Please help me with any solutions. If I could register it next month it will save me so much grief. Is there anything I can do to make my situation easily until I find a job?""

Can anyone recommend a motorcycle insurance company in the UK?
My son is 20 and trying to get reasonable quotes which don't cost more than the value of the bike is driving me nuts. I've tried all the comparison sites but what I want to know is which companies are worth bothering with. I've been on some review websites and looked up the companies which come up with the cheapest quotes and a lot of the reviews call them rip off merchants and say not to touch them. I want to hear from someone who's actually had to make a claim and been satisfied with the service.
