Post-vacation clarity in the form of... word vomit? Sure!
First: so very lucky. So very fortunate. Grateful. That I FINALLY got to cross off a bucket-list vacation and see some massive trees and beautiful mountains. Everything I could have imagined! And it's definitely worthy of a re-visit, once time has passed and I've recovered financially.
Second: I'm so amused that my slight trepidation regarding the potential for "culture shock" was unwarranted. See, if you're a rather unsocial midwesterner schooled in the ways of "Minnesota Nice" aka Advanced Passive Aggression, you might be worried about venturing into more direct/easygoing/outgoing cultures. I was delighted to take a vacation from blatant pettiness and passive aggression during my time out west. And honestly? I miss it. San Francisco was pretty agreeable, all things considered, and I will make a point to revisit.
Third: I loved taking the train! And at the same time, I'm heartbroken for the way passenger trains have to operate in this shithole country. Please. I just want so many trains. At all hours, in every direction. And, if it's NOT TOO MUCH TROUBLE, for assholes to not drag enormous tractor tires onto the tracks. (Fuck you, Utah.)
In conclusion: I'm so happy I went, and now I have to go through my photos while I reluctantly pick up where I left off here. And yes, California, if I can, I absolutely will be back. Thanks for having us.

Driving from Denver to Seattle is about 20 hours, a decent two-day roadtrip with a hotel stay in the middle. Taking Amtrak from Denver to Seattle takes 60 hours - 32 to get from Denver to Sacramento, CA, crashing in the Amtrak station for an 8-hour layover because your next train leaves at midnight, and then up the coast to Seattle. I cannot get off to sleep in a hotel and resume in the morning, because the train runs once a day. If I can't sleep in a chair or stay awake for a day and a half, a bed on the train costs over a thousand dollars.
*NYC to LA in 15 hours*, a travel amount I as a young'n could do in a day, or could comfortably split over two as I get older? Assuming affordable fares (which they currently are for coach tickets compared to flights and, depending on the city, hotels) and decent coverage (currently absolutely not, don't make me drive a day to New Mexico to catch the train the rest of the way) I would never touch a plane for domestic travel again.
(Would still road trip - great way to do self-curated tours and get to smaller locales - but for intercity it'd be train all the way.)
“Nobody’s going to want to sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours to get from New York City to LA.”
Me. I will sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours. I’ll sit on it for days. I’ll write and read and nap and eat and then do it all over again. I’ll stare out the windows and see America from ground level and not have to drive. I’ll see the Rockies and the deserts and cornfields and the Mississippi River and your house and yours and yours too. I’ll make up stories in my head about the small towns I see as we go along. I’ll see the states I’ve yet to see because driving or flying there is a fucking slog and expensive to boot. I’ll enjoy the ride as much as the destination. And then I’ll do it all over again to come the fuck home.

Taking the Amtrak up north and drinking a Stella Artois and eating a baaaad hotdog and listening to my box car playlist looking out the window at the autumnal Virginian delights and tip type tapping away at my little gay iPad with my knock off ralph Lauren day bag (forest green yes genuine leather accents despite being a fake brand!) next to me and my little backpack full of amenities bc the Amtrak is always late (not its fault. JP Morgan’s fault. Freight takes right of way since he consolidated the rails!)
Wailing sobbing crying grabbing my hair oh I miss my friend the amtrak!!!!!! My lovely diesel and dual sweetie pies

This is a post complaining about the lack of feasible travel options in the US beyond car or plane.
I live near Austin, Texas. I have family near Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is about 700 miles.
This is a shitty drive in a car. About 11.5 hours (not including stops), and that slog through west Texas is rough. It's a lot of wear and tear on the car, and even in the hybrid, a lot of gas.
When we need to get there quickly, we have generally flown. Southwest has some direct flights, about 1 hour and 45 minutes, for about $175. (Plus renting a car when we get there.) But airport security sucks and is a bit of an environmental disaster. You spend more time in the airport than in the air. It's annoying, but is a decent tradeoff for time when that's important.
Riding a Greyhound bus is CHEAPER than flying (about $120 a ticket) but you are either going to Dallas, waiting for a new bus, to Amarillo, waiting for a new bus, to Abq (21 hours), or To Dallas, to Oaklahoma City, to Abq (25 hours.)
But Rosie, you might ask, why not take *the train*?
More environmentally friendly, and it can't take LONGER than driving, right? Or maybe a liiiitle if we are going to Dallas first? So it cant be longer than the BUS right? And it's a train, how fun!
This is a map of Amtraks tracks.
Tumblr media
Suggested route 1: 30 hours
You can take a train to Ft. Worth, change to a different train to Oklahoma city, then take a bus to Kansas, THEN a train to Abq. $250 a ticket.
Tumblr media
Suggested route 2: 54 hours
Take a train to ST LOUIS, then a BUS to Kansas City, then a different train to Abq. $300 per ticket.
Tumblr media
And you still have to rent a car when you get there.
Tumblr media
Listen, I know this isn't like... Amtraks fault. Amtrak has been intentionally sabotaged again and again, but holy Jesus. I *want* to ride the train. I would gladly *double* my travel time if the cost was reasonable and the route didn't involve having to switch to a bus halfway through?! But how can I justify 2 hours/$175 vs 54 hours/$300 AND A BUS TRANSFER?!
Again, not Amtraks fault directly.

if i had to think in more depth about cult fantasies and why, at least for me, they're so tantalizing, i'd say it's not just because i think being manipulated is hot, although i do. the thing about high control environments is that they're controlled. your instructions are clear, even if they're objectionable. you impose a structure upon the world that makes it become so much easier to process and navigate, even at the cost of being cut off from so many ways to enjoy it.
and it's not just cult fantasy that does that. the idea of being kidnapped-- drugged at a bar or on an amtrak and taken far away-- inspires similar fantasies of "what if i were taken away from all this, and it wasn't my fault?" you weren't the one that chose to abandon your post. you struggled, maybe, or you weren't aware until it was too late. someone else imposed their wants upon you and you didn't have the means to resist, so now you're being used for their needs. you're free from your responsibilities because the situation is insurmountable. what choice do you have? you can't worry about all that anymore.
and all of that is why i think dipping into these aesthetics and kinks in a genuinely safe practice is so fulfilling. take a few people that have trouble expressing their needs and wants (because they're trans, say, and because they're forced to be so small all the time, because they're terrified of hurting people by wanting something) and tell one of them that, for the purposes of this exercise, hurting by wanting is the point. you're sandboxed away from real harm. you'll be told, clearly and directly, if you do something they don't like. and tell the other one that they can experience that all-consuming freedom, that clarity of purpose, that removal from worry, so long as they accept the singular responsibility to communicate their discomfort if the hurt bleeds out of the sandbox.
until every trans woman is utterly confident in her ability to express her needs and wants and achieve them without fear, we need this. even afterwards, a lot of us will still want this. it's playing. we were made to play.

I went to library con (lol its not called library con but thats what i called it. Its American Library Association Annual which is funny bc they call it ALA and I was like...that shitty anime con???) this week in san diego to promote the comic I worked with Terry on "Eat your Heart Out"
Tumblr media
I got jumpscared seeing the big banner. My art has never been on anything bigger than art center presentations lmao
We handed out signed copies and it was honestly pretty fun. I have a ton of bookmarks as well if anyone wants one.....if you can find me in real life LMAO
I also got to be on a PANEL like a big professional lmao And met Josie Campbell an animation brethren and we were like "LETS GO TAG! LETS GET THOSE NEGOTIATIONS!!!!" (Reminder that The Animation Guild is due to negotiate with studios in August so please support us!!!)
Downside was is that some of my sunburns are still really fresh (most of them are in gross peeling stage and some are...kinda painful) so I was a bit sweaty and uncomfortable...and now I'm paying for it bc i feel really under the weather.
BUT. lol my issues aside (it was my own damned fault getting burned the weekend before)
It was really fun!
Librarians are really cool lol Especially since I tried to get into that field during my unemployment last year and a half it was interesting hearing what they had to deal with as Librarians for children or teens (The teen librarians kept talking to me about Slam Dunk and One Piece *u*)
There's also this huge emphasis for book sellers in getting your books IN libraries. Books in actual physical libraries does so much for the value of payments of the book (which in turn pays the authors and artists that work on those books).
And how much librarians and libraries do for the industry as a WHOLE. I learned that back in the day when english manga was coming out they were binding the books REALLY SHITTY and its funny bc I DO remember that. The quality was really bad. And because librarians complained about it, because a book circulates through a lot of people rather than if you buy a volume for yourself, the book will get damaged really fast if the book is made poorly. So Viz had to change HOW they bound their books and you can definitely tell now how the quality is so much nicer.
Anyway it was really cool lol And also since it took place at the San Diego Convention center it was really cool to see what SDCC looks like when its not an absolute cluster fuck of people and noise lol I saw where I slept on the ground outside to get into Hall H and we were treated to a dinner at Roys which I'd only ever seen in passing lol (ALSO ROYS WAS SO EXPENSIVE!?!? And I thought the onigiri was like...the salmon went INTO the onigiri....so that was the dish. but it was...a ball of rice onigiri shaped with some salmon ...and it was REALLY good salmon and the misoyaki was good too but.....i was expecting really expensive onigiri and was oddly disappointed it wasn't....that.......anyway)
ANYWAY ANYWAY lmao. Our comic comes out in August 13! I've finally seen the finished product and it came out so well. Yknow that thing where you see your art from a few years ago and you want to crawl into a hole and die? Well lol I still feel that but also I don't because it honestly looks so good and its nice seeing it all in one whole place! The coloring came out really nice ! And I can't wait to see what Claudia did in the second half of the book
Oh yeah I also got a comped train ticket to get me down there and I got to ride the Amtrak which was pretty cool! I ...was EXHAUSTED on both trips down and back so I slept most of the way lmao But look at this guy!
Tumblr media
Lol ALTHO I was genuinely surprised that when we came back from san diego the train just goes in reverse.
On shinkansen the seats on the train are able to turn around so you're always facing forwards. So it was a little disorienting at first. I also wished I had an ekiben on the way down.
Its cool I can get an ekiben in august when i go to japan lmao

Maybe they didn’t expect her to come and they just felt obligated to send it? Turning the thought over in her head, she shook it away with a shudder. It was too late to have these doubts now-the hum of the train beneath her seat and the “Welcome to Pennsylvania!” sign making that abundantly clear. Punching the number into her phone, she hit the call button before she could give herself time to second-guess it. It rings once. Twice. A third time. Only stopping when the receiver tells her the number can’t be reached and to try again later.
“Fuck.” Y/N curses under her breath, remembering that she is, in fact, in a metal tube speeding through tunnels and trees that really push the boundaries of her average cell phone line. She types the number in again and waits this time until the train pulls into another small stop right at the southernmost part of Pennsylvania. She had not maybe 30 minutes (if she was lucky) before her train ride would come to its dreaded end. Thumbing the call button, she waited. This time it rang only twice before an overly enthusiastic voice answered on the other line.
“A warm greeting from The Wörner Hotel and Estate! Front desk and lobby services, this is Seokjin speaking. How may I assist you today?” His voice was smooth and light on the ears, but it hit her as anything but light. The name made her entire form tense up, and a nervous sweat prick at her brow. The reality of what she was doing truly settling into her system as the voice of an old friend forced her to face the consequences of her actions head-on. It's fine, She told herself, he probably doesn't even care. It's been years...
“Hello? May I help you?” He quipped again, a bit less perky than the first time.
Realizing that she hadn’t responded she choked out “Yes! Yes, one moment please!” She mentally face-palmed herself for such a clumsy response. “This is Y/N. Y/N Wörner. Anslem and Mariah’s daughter.”
A moment of fuzzy silence met her ears causing her to shift anxiously in her seat. She was in the process of checking the phone screen to see if he had hung up when shuffling noises on the other end of the line jolted her phone back to her ear and his silver-tone voice cut through the static.
“Oh! Yes forgive me-Mrs. Wörner had mentioned you might reach out.” He let out a smooth chuckle before continuing on.  “I assume you are calling for transportation services?” If he was surprised, his tone didn’t show it.
Y/N nodded, before catching that he could not see her with a “Yes, please!”
“Great! What’s the pick up address?” Y/N could hear the smile in his words and she flushed with embarrassment at how not put together she sounded. What a wonderful "first" impression she's giving him of her adult self.
“It’s going to be the Philadelphia Amtrak station.” Her eyes flitted to the trees dotted with new buds outside her window, finding their gentle sway in the wind soothing enough to qualm her racing heart.
“Awesome... And what time will your train be arriving at the station, Ms. Wörner?” She heard the click of a pen, and the scratch of its ink on the paper.
“Well, you see about that…” She trailed off as the train began to leave the small station, the pen scratching mimicking her pause. “Maybe 20 minutes or so?” She laughed nervously at her own obvious lack of foresight. If he had managed to scrounge up any good impression of her during their call, she had just metaphorically tossed it out of her train window.
Seokjin guffawed on the other end of the line and openly sputtered out a “20 minutes?! That's an almost 3 hour drive, miss. I will send someone out right away, but will you be alright waiting?” Y/n could tell he was trying his best to cover up his anxious outburst with concern, and the formality in his phrase feeling foreign and uncomfortable to her ears.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll grab something to eat and hunker down on a bench. It’s my fault for not calling sooner…” Y/N’s voice trickled out as she realized how this might make them look to her parents-making a guest wait for longer than they would approve of. She made a mental note to herself that she would just happen to forget to mention it during any conversations with them.
“Alright then Ms. Wörner. Your driver will reach out to you via text to share their information, location services, and a description of their vehicle. " She heard the unmistakable clicking of frantic computer keys as the previous anxiety in his tone faded and his customer service voice took over once again. "Please have your phone on hand with notifications on in case they need to reach you with any questions. Is there anything else I can help you with today?
“No, that is everything. Thank you, Jin.”  The nickname spilled from her lips with a practiced ease that surprised her own self, but he carried on like he didn’t seem to notice.
“Wonderful! I will see you later in the evening.” She could hear him typing something into his computer before the clacking ceased and a moment of silence enveloped them again. This time the silence felt eerily wrong and awkward. She could almost hear the sharp exhale before his voice drifted through the phone at a volume so quiet she almost missed it.
"I'm sorry- I couldn't catch that." She laughed trying to lighten the sudden shift in atmosphere.
“It’s…” He paused, seemingly weighing the sound of his own words on his tongue. “It’s good to have you back, Y/n.”
The dial tone signaled that the line had ended, but she still found herself holding the speaker to her ear much longer than she needed to. The way he said her name with so much heaviness had her whole world spinning. It was both nerve-wracking and comforting that he remembered her. It meant she hadn’t been gone long enough for anyone to truly forget as easily as she had wished they could-for she should know better than to expect from them what she could never do within herself-and she couldn’t decide if that was a blessing or a curse.

Reasons a nine-year-old yelled at me this week (Which should be taken a good natured grousing ala this list because we had a lovely time):
The Amtrak takes too long
We had to walk more than five blocks
There was a line to get into a restaurant
There was a line to get into a show
I said they did not have scientific evidence to back up a claim they made (this got my foot stomped on because I “said they didn’t know science” and we had to have a talk about asymmetrical retaliation and mutually assured destruction)
I told them we weren’t going to take a cab three blocks
It “doesn’t make sense” that the streets are numbered and on a grid
It’s hot
There were no pancakes at breakfast
It’s still hot
We were walking and she got dripped on by an awning and that was my fault for “walking her into the drips”
I said fuck
I jaywalked
I made HER jaywalk
I stepped into the street to hail a taxi and that’s not safe
We didn’t ride the cyclone on Coney Island (she threw up on the ride before and we were done)
We needed to get her out of the clothes she threw up in but we were in Chinatown and had to find a private place to change
We threw away her vomit dress
I asked her not to read at the breakfast table
I told her not to stare at the man who was injecting himself with something and keep walking
It’s not hot anymore and now she’s cold
I don’t speak Gaelic
I didn’t try to save Peri when he had cancer and that reminded her that her dog will die some day (this nearly made me cry, but I held it together enough to explain that when you are a pet owner you have to make the decisions that are right for the pet and not the ones you want to be right)
Not all the queens in Six did stage door
Once again I am reminded that I am not cut out for parenting and am glad to be home with my cat
But here is a sweet picture of an exhausted child and her aunt.

1)Tell me about an ableist experience you had that threw you off.
Oh boy, I went to visit friends this summer and took a train to get there. I'd taken amtrak before and had a decent time, accessibility-wise, but this was a new destination for me. When we got to the station, the platform was way below the train car, needing stairs rather than just stepping on, and the railway employees were mad at me for not telling them ahead of time that I needed assistance getting off the train?? Like. I am fully In A Wheelchair with a ticket to This Station that I didn't know didn't just need the little ramp to get off at, and somehow it's my fault? Really pissed me off, considering I'd only had decent experiences with Amtrak up until that point.
Also the crank-lift thing to get off was very sketchy and the person using it clearly had no real idea what he was doing.
3) Do you have any examples of places that tried to be accessible but failed spectacularly?
When I was in college, my campus was like. horribly horribly inaccessible. But there was ONE building on the whole campus that had a correctly-graded ADA compliant ramp. ONE. And the ramp? Led to a door with a 6 inch step up.
(I already answered 5)

Reagan is why we don't really have high speed rail and why large scale railroad Electrification never occurred in the US and why our public transportation is so far behind because it was sort of alright, just before Reagan and boom Reagan nipped HSR in the bud and cut back Amtrak
@amtrak-official care to add?
Tumblr media
the funny thing is that i don't think younger people - and i mean those under the age of 40 - really have a grasp on how many of today's issues can be tied back to a disastrous reagan policy:
war on drugs: reagan's aggressive escalation of the war on drugs was a catastrophic policy, primarily targeting minority communities and fueling mass incarceration. the crusade against drugs was more about controlling the Black, Latino and Native communities than addressing the actual problems of drug abuse, leading to a legacy of broken families and systemic racism within the criminal justice system.
deregulation and economic policies: reaganomics was an absolute disaster for the working class. reagan's policies of aggressive tax cuts for the rich, deregulation, and slashing social programs were nothing less than class warfare, deepening income inequality and entrenching corporate greed. these types of policies were a clear message that reagan's america was only for the wealthy elite and a loud "fuck you" to working americans.
environmental policies: despite his reputation being whitewashed thanks to the recovery of the ozone layer, reagan's environmental record was an unmitigated disaster. his administration gutted critical environmental protections and institutions like the EPA, turning a blind eye to pollution and corporate exploitation of natural resources. this blatant disregard for the planet was a clear sign of prioritizing short-term corporate profits over the future of the environment.
AIDS crisis: reagan's gross neglect of the aids crisis was nothing short of criminal and this doesn't even begin to touch on his wife's involvement. his administration's indifference to the plight of the lgbtq+ community during this devastating epidemic revealed a deep-seated bigotry and a complete failure of moral leadership.
mental health: reagan's dismantling of mental health institutions under the guise of 'reform' led directly to a surge in homelessness and a lack of support for those with mental health issues. his policies were cruel and inhumane and showed a personality-defining callous disregard for the most vulnerable in society.
labor and unions: reagan's attack on labor unions, exemplified by his handling of the patco strike, was a blatant assault on workers' rights. his actions emboldened corporations to suppress union activities, leading to a significant erosion of workers' power and rights in the workplace. he was colloquially known as "Ronnie the Union Buster Reagan"
foreign policy and military interventions: reagan's foreign policy, particularly in latin america, was imperialist and ruthless. his administration's support for dictatorships and right-wing death squads under the guise of fighting "communism" showed a complete disregard for human rights and self-determination of other nations.
public health: yes, reagan's agricultural policies actually facilitated the rise of high fructose corn syrup, once again prioritizing corporate profits over public health. this shift in the food industry has had lasting negative impacts on health, contributing to the obesity epidemic and other health issues.
privatization: reagan's push for privatization was a systematic dismantling of public services, transferring wealth and power to private corporations and further eroding the public's access to essential services.
education policies: his approach to education was more of an attack on public education than anything else, gutting funding and promoting policies that undermined equal access to quality education. this was, again, part of a broader agenda to maintain a status quo where the privileged remain in power.
this is just what i could come up with in a relatively short time and i did not even live under this man's presidency. the level at which ronald reagan has broken the united states truly can't be overstated.
