This Is Not Here exhibition in Syracuse, October 1971
The whole story in a nutshell is that we were having a meeting in 1969, and John showed up and said he’d met this guy Allen Klein, who had promised Yoko an exhibition in Syracuse, and then matter-of-factly John told us he was leaving the band. That’s basically how it happened. It was three to one because the other two went with John, so it was looking like Allen Klein was going to own our entire Beatles empire. I was not too keen on that idea.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Too Many People)
Ram (piss off cake, that was your first mistake and whatever John heard) released 17 May 1971 Imagine (with HDYS?) released 9 September 1971 (US) and 8 October in UK
This Is Not Here Press Conference at Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY (October 8, 1971)
Q: What do you think of Paul, John? A: I’ve changed, you know, he’s still the closest friend I’ve ever had except for Yoko. So I mean I’m still close to him whatever goes on.
On 9 October 1971, John Lennon’s 31st birthday, a retrospective exhibition of artworks by Yoko Ono opened at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York.
The show looked back over 10 years of her career, and was billed as “A show of unfinished paintings and sculpture”. It ran until 27 October 1971.
The exhibition catalogue took the form of a collage in the shape of a newspaper, and was compiled by Lennon and Peter Bendry. The back cover featured a sequence of photographs of Lennon and Ono which morphed their faces from one to another. The sequence was later used on the labels for ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ and Some Time In New York City.
Guests for the opening night included Ringo Starr and his wife Maureen Starkey, Allen Klein, Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa, Spike Milligan, Jack Nicholson, Dick Cavett, John Cage and Dennis Hopper. Lennon gave all visitors a silver necklace to mark the occasion. (x)
This Is Not Here
The main title “This is Not Here” recalls an experience during a gallery show in 1961, at which an ugly cabinet that was interfering with the exhibition space was tagged “this is not here,” in the spirit of Magritte’s famous painted image “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.” <…> The ground floor of the museum housed pieces like Painting to Shake Hands Through, Painting to Let the Evening Light Go Through, and a clear plexiglass labyrinth called Amaze, whose central cubicle was a two-way mirror-walled chamber containing a toilet! Although it is not a very difficult puzzle, the structure forces you to take part in a Conceptual event by making you arrive at something as familiar as a toilet. <…> A number of pieces in the show reiterate the theme of small, diverse parts in relation to a larger, cumulative unity. <…> Sizes (1964), a transparent box with mirrors and lenses embedded in its sides, converts the same needle into six different sizes; while Shadows encloses objects with different silhouettes, all casting shadows of the same size and shape. It is intended that Broken Vase Piece will be reassembled in ten years by those who gathered its shattered fragments.8 Film No. 4 (365 naked British bottoms, recorded as peace petition signatures in London, in 1968) is a bizarrely hypnotic and fixed-camera view of that number of moving buttocks. Of course, 365 units of anything could have been employed just as easily—days in a year, degrees of rotation around one’s head, stars, leaves, etc.—to demonstrate that although everything is an individual entity, sheer accumulation has the effect of dissolving the unique into the universal. <…> The second floor contained imaginary pieces such as those in the Weight Room, in which objects defied their normal density or gravity factors when lifted; indications like “imagine flowers in the (empty) museum planters”; and some cooperative pieces where John Lennon responded to older works of Yoko’s like an amiable Zen dialogue. Water Room was a collection of projects contributed by guests, to which the artist had promised to add only the water. (In its final stages, it turned out to be Conceptual, rather than actual water.) <…> During the month that the Everson show was in progress, WNET, Channel 13, aired an hour of Yoko Ono’s work on its Free Time series, October 14th. The program was largely excerpts from past pieces: Grapefruit in the World of Park (mind music), film shorts, Think/Feel/And/Do/Tank, Bag Piece, or Fly performed by John Lennon and others, and several events and paintings.
(“This Is Not Here” - A Report on the Yoko Ono Retrospective at Syracuse by Emily Wasserman, January 1972)
Much of the show consisted of Miss Ono's ephemeral concepts and word ‐ plays given slightly less fragile embodiment, A huge letter “T” made of ice melted in an outdoor courtyard„ for instance (“Iced Tea”), and indoors there were such objects as “Painting to Let the Evening Light Go Through,” a clear Plexigiass sheet that Mr. Lennon said was his favorite work; “Imagine the Flowers,” a row of empty flower pots, and “Cloud Piece,” a water bed on which the viewer could “lie down and watch until a cloud passes from right to left.” “Total communication can mean peace,” declared Miss Ono, clad in a black velvet hotpants suit, at a preview of the show on Friday. “The artist can change the world and values in the world.” Stressing the importance of viewer participation in her work, she said, “We're all audience and we're all artists. You're all involved.” (Before the press preview was over, there was a good deal of participation: the apple was eaten to its core, a Venetian vase sent by Peggy Guggenheim as a “watercontainer” was smashed, and an antique eyeglas case and a set of false teeth were missing from their vitrines.) Modestly insisting that his role in the show was subordinate to Miss Ono's, Mr. Lennon, whose 31st birthday was marked by the show's opening, explained, “She thinks up beautiful pure concept things, and I come up with a gimmicky reaction.” For his guest stint, he contributed such works as a wardrobe of edible clothes, and a number of films and pieces “in dialogue” with Miss Ono, among them a huge “Baby Grand Guitar” next to which she had placed only the neck of another guitar and the legend, “Imagine the body.”
(The New York Times, October 11, 1971)
John and the guests of his birthday party drunkly sang many old and new songs including What’d I Say, Yellow Submarine, Goodnight Irene, Take This Hammer, He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands, Bring It On Home To Me, Yesterday, Maybe Baby, Peggy Sue, My Baby Left Me, Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, Crippled Inside and Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
Also during the party, a Japanese reporter interviewed Lennon and Ono. The recording, which featured a high degree of tension between the couple, became known as The Argument Interview, and was later aired on the US radio series The Lost Lennon Tapes. (x)
In the fall of 1971 Connolly travelled to the US to cover Yoko’s show in Syracuse. During this trip, John pulled Ray aside and asked him to do him a favor. He asked Ray to get in touch with Paul when he was back in London — with a message to call him. Apparently John wanted to talk to Paul and he believed if he called Paul himself it would devolve into a screaming match.  Ray did as requested when he returned to London. He went to Paul’s home and though he wasn’t able to connect with Paul, he did leave him a message in his letterbox. When he followed up a few days later, it was Jim McCartney that answered the phone and he shut Ray down, telling Ray not to get involved, that things had moved on.

God! Not again, NO, I am not John Constantine - Hellblazer's daughter. I'm not a magician, technically, I'm a scientist. Because, well, alchemy is a science!
[BANNER ARTWORK WIP]
Courtney "Phoenix" Fox created (lovingly autistically) by @fynneatsstars.
TRIGGERING THEMES INCLUDE but are not limited to: Disordered Eating, SA, cannon DC Comics violence (so like death ect.) stay safe <3
NOTE: Courtney is a part of the STARVERSE, like my other character/DC OC ask blog, Malakai Hadeon (@thank-mime-later)
COURTNEY IN A NUTSHELL: Courtney, or Phoenix, is one of the ONLY individuals in the modern age who have the ability to utilize the science of alchemy. Gotham is not a polite city - not exactly a place where a family dreams of raising their children. And yet, Courtney knows nothing but the dark alleys and the constant whirring of sirens. But after receiving a book teaching the basic concepts of alchemy? Courtney wonders whether now she could make a name for herself. Her way. With her rules.
OTHER NOTES: Courtney and Phoenix are not separable identities. On this blog, feel free to interact calling Courtney either
Marbles & Wally West/The Pulse (instead of staying as The Flash when Barry Allen returned, Wally became "The Pulse" instead) are canon in the STARVERSE but I'm open to other stuff on here (like jnephrite, I'll dub stuff on Tumblr as the Tumblrverse)
Feel free to make blogs for/inspired by the STARVERSE (like STARVERSE Wally West) but tag me or my OOC blog!!
I also didn't think I'd get like any interaction at all for this little project so I'm really thankful & excited!!

Paul McCartney: Inside the Songs | BBC Radio 4
Paul reads from his new book, The Lyrics (2021).
-
PAUL: This song was written a year or so after the Beatles break-up, at a time when John was firing missiles at me with his songs, and one or two of them were quite cruel. I don’t know what he hoped to gain, other than punching me in the face. I decided to turn my missiles on him too, but I’m not really that kind of a writer, so it was quite veiled. It was the 1970′s equivalent of what we might call today a diss track.
The idea of “Too many people preaching practices” was definitely aimed at John, telling everyone what they ought to do. I just got fed up being told what to do, so I wrote this song.
“You took your lucky break and broke it in two”.
The first verse and the chorus have pretty much all the anger I could muster. And when I did the vocal on the second line, “Too many reaching for a piece of cake”, I remember singing it as “Piss off, cake”, which you can hear if you really listen to it. Again, I was getting back at John, but my heart wasn’t really in it.
You’ve made this break, so good luck with it!
But it was pretty mild. I didn’t really come out with any savagery. It’s actually a fairly upbeat song, it doesn’t really sound that vitriolic. If you didn’t know the story, I don’t know that you’d be able to guess at the anger behind its writing.
It was all a bit weird and a bit nasty, and I was trying to basically say, let’s be sensible. We have a lot going for us in the Beatles, and what actually split us up is the business stuff. And that’s pretty pathetic, really! So let’s try and be peaceful. Let’s maybe ‘give peace a chance’...
“Too many people are sharing the party line. Too many people are grabbing for a slice of the cake, a piece of the pie.”
The “sleeping late” thing, whether that was accurate — whether John and Yoko actually sleep in late or not, I’m not sure — although John often was a late riser when I would drive out to Weybridge so we could write together — they were all references to people thinking that their own truth was the only truth, which was certainly what was coming from John.
The thing is, so much of what they held to be truth was crap. War is over? Well no, it isn’t. But I get what you’re saying: war is over if you want it to be. So, if enough people want war to be over, it’ll be over? I’m not sure that’s entirely true, but it’s a great sentiment; it’s a nice thing to think and to say.
I’d been able to accept Yoko in the studio, sitting on a blanket in front of my amp. I’d worked hard to come to terms with that. But then when we broke up and everyone was now flailing around, John turned nasty. I don’t really understand why. Maybe because we grew up in Liverpool, where it was always good to get in the first punch of a fight.
John actually had Allen Klein and Yoko in the room, suggesting lyrics during writing sessions. In his song How Do You Sleep? the line “The only thing you done was yesterday” was apparently Allen Klein’s suggestion, and John said, “Hey, great. Put that in.” I can see the laughs they had doing it, and I had to work very hard not to take it too seriously, but at the back of my mind I was thinking, “Wait a minute, all I ever did was Yesterday? I suppose that’s a funny pun, but all I ever did was Yesterday, Let It Be, The Long and Winding Road, Eleanor Rigby, Lady Madonna … — f*ck you, John.”
I had to fight them for my bit of the Beatles and, in fact, for their bit of the Beatles, which many years later they realised and almost thanked me for. Nowadays people get it, but at the time I think the others felt they were the ones who were being hurt by my actions. Allen Klein already had a history with the Rolling Stones. I just thought, “Oy oy oy, no, this guy’s got such a bad reputation.” And good old John says, “Oh, if he’s that badly talked about, he can’t be all bad.” John had this kind of distorted thinking, which was amusing sometimes. But not when someone was going to take everything that John and George and Ringo and I owned and had really worked hard to get.
So, I stood up as the sensible one and said, “This is not good!” Klein wanted 20% and I said, “Make him have 10%, if you have to go with him”. “Oh no, no, no,” they came back, “no, he wants 20%.” It seemed to me they were all just f*cking out of it and making no attempt to do anything sensible.
A lot of hurt went down during that period in the early 1970′s — them feeling hurt, me feeling hurt — but John being John, he was the one who would write a hurtful song. That was his bag.

BACKSTORY:
triggers in order: toxic family dynamic, grooming (nothing super in-depth), kidnapping (? like it was ‘willing’ but no. see next trigger for why), toxic “relationship” (and 11yr age gap w/ a 16y/o we hate it), straight-up captivity, very brief mention of suicide + heroin (very!)
*would like to quickly preface that this isn’t just Dark for the sake of being r/im14andthisisdeep but that’s for a later time **(also! i have markers for where the grooming + Super Dark parts begin and end! -- also, the Super Dark part is all very public knowledge. had articles. media frenzy. first thing that comes up if you google her name) *** also. if u need it then a tl;dr is below this section hfkldsa
alice audrey adams was born to the type of family that names all of their children alliterative names ( however, they sadly didn’t get their own kardashian-style show )... alexis adams (working name, utp if taken as a wc)... alfie allison adams (working name, utp if taken as a wc)... born to anna adams and allen adams... we hate it here.
as u can see... all of the kids were basically named after allen... they all had ‘al’ names.... extremely confusing
plot-twist: THAT’S the darkest part
the adams were very concerned with public image. as a family in the upper echelon, they simply had to be! a narcissist father, a distant mother, put in competition with her siblings — there was no truly healthy dynamic in the household. but they looked good. they went to church every sunday, a ‘wwjd’ sticker on the back of her mother’s car. they did just enough activities and took just enough trips together to get the image across. they threw parties. they attended parties. they were the picture perfect american family — they even had two cats in the yard! life used to be so hard!
of course, in reality, this all left ms alice quite the lonely gal. but don’t worry! she didn’t turn to hedonism! lord no! instead, she turned to other people. a lot of friendships — couldn’t tell if they were real or #fortheclout — but at a point, did it matter?
grooming tw: it all came to a screeching halt when she met luke johnson, the son of their neighbors. he came back from california to georgia to visit family, care for his ailing father. oh, he was a good man! sure, he was ‘somewhat’ older than her — 27 when she was 16 — but he was such a good, handsome young man! and they were all still calling him young man, after all.
alice ‘began’ a torrid affair with luke after about a month into his visit. although she saw no immediate wrong in it, he insisted she keep it a secret ‘for the time being’ — which really just made it all the more exciting! he made all the storm clouds that hovered disappear.
one day, the levee broke for alice (still figuring out what exactly happened because i don’t wanna go too dark since this is already extremely dark, but trust that it had something to do with her parents and was just enough to push her over the edge). convinced luke was the only safe person, she turned to him. knowing their small community would catch on and essentially exile him, he took that opportunity to convince her to go back to santa monica with him where they could ‘start anew’ after his father’s death.
there are a few details i plan on adding regarding like. how legality playing into it. but i may just reserve those for an official bio lhakfsdfj
**BEGINNING OF SUPER DARK** for a while, there was the question of whether they should consider it a kidnapping or not. she went with him willingly, but she was still underage (and… you know, that age difference… the power dynamic... gross y’all). the adams insisted that it was (bc it basically was lbr) — primarily because it would make them look far better — but the community still questioned the logistics and legalities of it all… ugh. did the police really wanna deal with that? ugh.
in any case, on the other side of us america, autumn was nearing. alice would have the very occasional inquiry over how school would work (very occasional! don’t worry, luke!), over the logistics of her new life… and, after receiving multiple calls from various friends (in addition to her siblings) that sounded genuine, began wondering… if she’d made the right choice. questions about him.
when she began bringing up the idea of going back — at least for the school year!! — he would continuously remind her that she was not old enough to buy herself a plane ticket (and he was not about to do that). she also couldn’t rent a car yet (and he certainly wouldn’t let her take (one of) his car(s)!). but most importantly? he loved her. and she loved him. (what a creep!)
so, for a hot second, it seemed like she was stuck. damn legalities!! damn love!! you know, until she texted her older sister back with all of the problems that only being 16... and “in love”.... caused. her sister offered to fly down, buy her a plane ticket, and fly back with her.
when luke saw this (with all the unrestricted access to her phone he had so he could block, delete, and manipulate as he pleased), he confronted her. things went awry. she wound up in his budding wine cellar (which he soon emptied, of course… those merlots :( ….). he messaged back and, as her, said it was actually all good!! luke had figured out the logistics and she could call whenever she wanted!!
and those calls became frequent! because she would pick up when luke held it up to her! because she was pretty sure luke would kill her if she didn’t!
she wasn’t sure how long it was until she was officially Found. it took what was ruled a suicide by luke, a shot to the head and heroin in his system, to finally get any authority’s attention. all she knew was that she went to santa monica in mid june and she stopped seeing regular daylight by late july. so some time in august to some time in april… **END OF SUPER DARK + GROOMING**
she was returned to georgia shortly after and everything was different. from herself to her friends. but everything was also the same. from her room to her family. it was all… teasing. she began going to therapy, but she really sucked at it?? so she just let her therapist rely on various articles that covered the event. because it had been a media circus. good enough, amirite??
she didn’t have the will or patience to put on that peppy facade she’d had before, but there were still a few things she found a smidge of joy in. music (although her taste had… slightly altered and wow! it’d been almost a year since she’d picked up that bass!), videography… just those small things, you know??
for the first half of the ~ 2014 fall semester ~, she attempted actual school. really was not working out. with, for probably the first and only time, her parents’ approval and understanding, she dropped out and studied for a ged -- shorter and self-led -- instead.
she passed with a pretty decent grade... but it’s been argued that she really shouldn’t have gotten into pratt institute (she was at least realistic and didn’t apply to, like… cornell), but she did. national news helps.
while in the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, she learned of masters. she submitted an application as a joke — because her grades sucked!!!!! — but guess who got a job?? oh, she could pretend it was because her selected portfolio was actually genuinely good… but, man… we all know…
fun fact: my uncle applied to harvard as a joke. some twenty-five years later, we still haven’t heard back :\
she… continues to suck. like… she kinda wants the place to eventually burn down?? figuratively speaking (or is it…) but ya, for all the monopolizing she has seen turn people Evil?? but the hell can she do about it… just gotta make sure she keeps her in-house videographer job… maybe she can do something about it when she like… is capable. fuaihoelwdjkn
she sees an in-house therapist and i’d say ‘good for her,’ but it was mandated l m a o
doesn’t talk about herself all that much!! but that might not matter for some people, yk?? ugh journalism <3
y’all im so bad at ending intros.
TL;DR:
(consult above trigger list): bright kid in a super rich and toxic family because obviously. everything they did was just to look good <3 also they all had ‘a’ names which is the biggest tragedy of all :( ‘fell in love’ when she was 16ys/o with a 27y/o who was visiting to care for his father in his final days. had a torrid affair. creep. creep (luke) basically made her ‘fall in love.’ she thought creep was the only safe person at one point and creep was like ‘wanna go back 2 santa monica w me?’ and she was like ‘yes.’ and everyone was like ‘was this kidnapping... we cant tell....’ then he became even more possessive when she started questioning him and some logistics. when she finally found a way she could go back to georgia for a spell, he was like ‘no u can go in my wine cellar btw i will be taking all of the wine out.’ he kept her there from august to april and... only reason he didnt keep keeping her was bc he was Caught so. back to georgia where the devil went down. everything was Worse. even the things that were the same. but hey, the sob story that landed her in the news plenty of times got her into a college she shouldn’t have gotten into and gave her a leg-up in a joke application for a job at masters (in-house videographer). really bad at doing her work but like... fuck the man i guess??
PERSONALITY + HEADCANONS:
has no time for Fake Nice (which, as a born southerner, she’s really good at sniffing out!). has no time for arrogance. kind of makes her at odds with the nyc upper class...
on that note, still got a lil bit of some georgia twang
she lets herself indulge in various vices, but has left a previous hedonist status. weed and alcohol are still pretty common, but everything else is kept at arm’s length.
also, while on that topic, she Does Not drink wine. being trapped in a cellar... kinda makes u averse. like. literally despises it. will go on autopilot and make it KNOWN if offered wine.
also ALSO while on that topic, after looking it up and seeing she fits the new york city requirements, she has a medical marijuana card <3 the one good thing, if u ask her, to come out of therapy/psychiatry <3 will not show it off unless absolutely NECESSARY bc then it gets personal or <3 will lie about why and say it’s like for epilepsy or sumn unless ur rolfe but <3 she has it <3
at odds with herself. enjoys the company of others, definitely has a history of being an extrovert, but has become very selective with the company she keeps.
VERY private person! has had enough public standing!
...has occasionally used her story to advance her tho bc it’s her national newsworthy tragic story and she can exploit it if she wants <3
when good charlotte said “i don’t wanna be in love”?? she felt that. her last ‘relationship’ ruined that for her <3 save her <3
used to be really into pop! bc pop is fun! she loved some britney (i mean... she still does... how can u not!)! but. her taste has changed drastically. rarely listens to pop. has traded britney for like.... hole and the like.
her parents didn’t use this as the basis for her name but,, 2 me,,, she’s named alice for a reason <3 gotta luv alice in chains <3
y’all i found a youtube comment on a video called ‘nirvana - half the man i used to be’ (the song was, in fact, ‘creep’ by stone temple pilots) and it’s <3 her music taste <3 click here for it <3
the above said, dresses like she’s in seattle in the early 90s.
her rumor is true btw she DID catfish david hasselhoff and she will proudly tell u. it’s her best accomplishment.
completely stopped talking to her parents and got cut-off a while back ago so now she’s livin like the Prols
which is how a rich kid one of my profs once advised referred to his classmates.... hilarity ensues.
the above in mind, her parents say she’s testing the waters as a ‘normal person’ to save face. they can’t have anyone knowing their family isn’t perfect <3
she has a pet turtle whom she named “dr. turtle,” although he’s constantly referred to as “doc” or “the doc.” he has his own youtube channel and tiktok account.
she has a wall full of evidence that courtney love did not kill kurt cobain... it makes sense, believe me.
became a vegetarian...... partially because it was different from her original life and a way to control something, partially because this commercial made her feel SO BAD.
literally her default mode is stoned like... a totally sober alice is rarer than a nessie sighting
when she was 18, before she could ‘hold her liquor’ as well as she can now, she got a lil too drunk and now has a portrait tattoo of courtney love on her forearm. but it was done well at least!!
kind of ironic considering her career, but RARELY posts on any social media site except twitter. after the media circus in 2014 and All Eyes On Her, she’s just..... so tired...... of ppl seeing her face and being like ‘omg ur that wine cellar bitch!’
(drugs tw) has become more and more Addicted to playing around with fate. j chill on a ledge, talkin to some pals, but deciding it’s a good idea to swing her legs on the wrong side of ledge? totally! mixing a lot of alcohol with opioids which she is not accustomed to? DEF!! (end tw)
more to come!!
CONNECTION IDEAS:
i have two (2) queued up!! but while we wait for them to post, i’ll just… link them over here: 1, 2
muse u <3 the other half of her subplot from the main <3
her older sister!
her younger sibling!
some of the basics!! you know: close pal, roommate, drug buddies (but she gotta hit them up), fwb, ons, frenemies, enemy
ppl who recognize her from the 2014 luke johnson articles and have either brought it up or,,,,,,, act Awkward™
cld be fun 2 just have like. a jam bud. someone who plays any instrument and they j. jam sometimes.
ppl she sells. some of her medical marijuana to. bc yk what weed may be legal in nyc now but,,,, she’s still found a way to be broke she will accept anything. and also it just became legalized THIS YEAR so!!
i have a budding wc page @ https://escxpiism.tumblr.com/wcs (and when i say budding, i MEAN budding) so feel free 2 check it out!!
more to come!!

hello, it’s nessa here with another muse! i’m hoping third time’s a charm because i know i’ve taken up and then dropped two characters recently, so i apologize about that! anyways, this is my son jackson grant allen, named after my two favorite superheros. i played him a couple years ago, so i’m excited to bring him back to life. if you’d like to plot with me, shoot me a message on here or on discord! and you already know that i have a whole pinterest board for him, so check that out here if you want to get a better idea of who he is!
so this is jackson grant allen. he also answers to jack, jay, allen, jacksin and any other nicknames you can think of including handsome and dumbass ( this one usually just comes from his siblings, but he’s been conditioned to glance around whenever he hears it ).
basically what you need to know about jackson is that he wants to be a model in the future but is happy with being in one night stand for now, loves food, and was probably a golden retriever in another life. or maybe a chihuahua. that would be fitting as well.
he was actually born a month early, on february 29th. he claims it’s because he smelt bacon from inside the womb and wanted out to eat it. he’s technically only six years old since his real birthday comes every four years and it makes sense because he acts like a six year old at times. he’s immature but can’t help it.
jackson’s basically just a big kid. a very talkative big kid, at least. he loves to have a good time and wants everyone else to have a good time. and if that means ridiculous puns and the equivalent of dad jokes, well, someone’s got to tell them.
you’ll be hard pressed to get jackson to take much of anything seriously. aside from his job. he loves being a life guard, mostly because he gets to be near water. plus he gets to take a swim whenever he’s on break. ( priorities, jackson, priorities. )
he has a rat named waffles that has his run of jackson’s hotel room. in his little ball of course. and he has one of those giant hamster homes with tons of tunnels and everything. the rat is basically his child, so don’t be alarmed if you go to his room and see a little rodent!
he would two hundred percent have an animal ( or five ) if he had the means to support them all. so he just goes to the humane society to stare at dogs and sigh wistfully and pet them all. but really, he just wants everything to be hunky dory happy and to not have to be serious about anything. he’s terrible at it.
personality: good-humored, chivalrous, honest, impulsive, creative, idealistic, forgetful, motivating, valiant, tender.
jackson is the second youngest child in the allen family, a life guard for the malnati’s, an aspiring model, a proud band member, a loyal friend, a protective brother, and a chicago native. mostly, though, he’s just trying to do his best.
chicago born and raised, he attended glenbrook north high school in the suburb of northbrook ( as all the allen kids do ) but got to know a lot of the city by working the concessions at the united center in high school and just… y'know…. getting out of his house.
was generally a nice kid in high school, maybe just a touch of a troublemaker, mostly a harmless prankster. he took a lot of girls to prom. he’s always been the tallest boy around – just one of his many likable qualities. in addition to being the tallest boy in his class, he was always one of the oldest, too. he got held back in kindergarten because his parents thought he needed another year to prepare for school before heading into first grade.
he decided to come back to chicago after trying to start a modeling career in los angeles. he now lives at the malnati with his rat. he works occasionally as a life guard and he just wanders around the city trying to get modeling opportunities where he can.
overall, he’s a good guy. or at least, he tries to be. inconsistent and impulsive, can get on the annoying side at times, but he’s mostly pretty nice. he tries to be honest, also a bit oversensitive, but he really tries to love everyone with his whole heart. he’s always trying to make things better for people. he’s very forgiving, proud of his family, and has never really called anywhere but chicago his home.
this is a really bad summary of him since i repeated myself and was all over the place, but i suppose that makes sense as that’s pretty much jack in a nutshell. for more info about this guy, feel free to take a look at his bio page, and if you want to plot, feel free to check out his plotting page!

A Question of Auters: A Director’s Influence
John Ford.  Alfred Hitchcock.  Stanley Kubrick.  Martin Scorsese.  Orson Welles.  Charlie Chaplin.  Tim Burton.  David Lynch.  Francis Ford Coppola.  Steven Spielberg.
If you have only the barest knowledge of film, you recognize at least one of these names, and well you should.  These are the names upon which an entire school of thought is built, the greatest directors in film history.  These are the directors that matter, the creators that shaped an industry.  These are the men who made important films.
Or at least, so popular auteur theory would have us believe.
Auteur is a word heard often within the film community, thrown around as a casual term, part of the jargon used by those interested and well-versed in cinema.  Even those who aren’t interested or well-versed might recognize the word from use alone, and either way, depending on your viewpoint, it may inspire either a wise, respectful nod, or a disgusted snort.
Before we jump into the reasons for those reactions, however, perhaps we should discuss what, exactly, an auteur is.
The word auteur is a French noun, defined by dictionary.com like this:
A filmmaker whose individual style and complete control over all elements of production give a film its personal and unique stamp.
Or, for a simpler definition, just translate the word literally: auteur is French for author.
It’s a reasonable translation, one that makes a lot of sense.  In many ways, despite not literally writing the story or script, a director is the person the most responsible for a film’s end result.  They get the final call.  They work with the actors.  It is they who have the ‘vision’ of the film, the end product in mind throughout the entire project.
It’s no surprise that in a world fascinated by the relatively new (and relatively fast growing) medium of film, it didn’t take long for the public to become equally fascinated by the people most obviously behind the movie-making process: the directors.
The term auteur theory is not a new one.  It was discussed first by future author François Truffaut, in Cahiers du Cinéma titled Une certaine tendance du cinéma français, which, translated, is: “A Certain Tendency of French Cinema”, in which Truffaut criticized French cinema, championing instead American directors, notably Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks.  It was also Truffaut who said:
“There are no good or bad films. Only good or bad directors.”
Later, the term auteur theory was first coined by American critic Andrew Sarris in a 1962 essay entitled Notes on the Auteur Theory, followed by a book called The American Cinema: Directors and Directions 1929–1968, which would go on to influence movie critics, raising further awareness of the idea of auteur theory in the first place.
But what is an auteur?  We’ve named a few, sure, and we’ve even discussed the basic definition, but how can you tell if a film is created by an auteur, rather than ‘just’ a director?  Where does the difference come in?
The answer lies in the examples used by Truffaut in his essay: Howard Hawks, and Alfred Hitchcock.
Both of those directors help set the gold standard for what would be considered the criteria for the auteur style, very simply by having a style of their own.
See, put very simply, Hitchcock and Hawks, while creating very different films, had one thing in common in terms of directing: they both had very distinct individual styles.
In Sarris’s 1962 essay, he laid down the groundwork, three major rules, that all directors must follow to be considered an auteur, all three of which Hawks and Hitchcock embodied to a T:
“A great director has to at least be a good director.”
In other words, to be an auteur, the director in question has to be at least a competent story-teller and film-maker.  They must have some level of ability in terms of technicals.
2. “Over a group of films a director must exhibit certain recurrent characteristics of style which serve as his signature.”
An auteur must have a signature style.  This is probably the rule that people are the most familiar with, the distinguishable personality that makes Tim Burton’s films dark and full of stripes, or why Hitchcock has an ‘icy blonde’ in nearly every one of his best films.  This is the element that dictates that, for it to be the work of a true auteur, you can tell who the director was, just by looking at the film itself.
3. “Interior meaning is extrapolated from the tension between a directors personality and his material.”
In simpler terms, auteur films have to reveal the director’s innermost thoughts and ideas about life, the human condition, films, anything, really.  It’s these elements that give us Steven Spielberg’s use of fathers (and lack thereof) in his films, or his themes of ‘Growing Up Sucks’ and Tear Jerker stories of idealism, or Howard Hawks’ themes of manhood, or Martin Scorsese’s stories of Anti-Heroes, cynicism, and the idea of Family vs. Career.
To quote Andre Brazin:
“The politique des auteurs consists, in short, of choosing the personal factor in artistic creation as a standard of reference, and then assuming that it continues and even progresses from one film to the next. It is recognized that there do exist certain important films of quality that escape this test, but these will systematically be considered inferior to those in which the personal stamp of the auteur, however run-of-the-mill the scenario, can be perceived even minutely.”
In other words?  Being a bad film produced with a recognizable style is better than being a good film with a bland style.
The question is…is that true?
Is it better to be a worse film with the distinct fingerprints of a well-known name, or a good film with no individualism as a style?
And an even bigger question: does it all truly lie in the hands of the director?
Here’s the thing:
While auteur theory existed in the 1950s and 1960s, it wasn’t really considered a big deal, especially by the auteur’s themselves.  Hawks and Hitchcock thought of themselves as just working in a trade, not making art.  It was in the following decade that the idea truly took off.
The ‘auteurs’ emerged, en masse, in the 1970s, and with good reason: the entire idea of auteur is impossible without the existence of film school, and the ability and reason to watch a director’s entire filmography.  The distinct styles of Orson Welles, Charlie Chaplin, and Alfred Hitchcock directly influenced the ‘movie brat’ director generation, such as Scorsese, Spielberg,  Francis Ford Coppola, and Woody Allen, directors who had not only grown up with films, but with film studies.  This led to the birth of ‘New Hollywood’, the age of the director, a period that returned the state of productions to the way it had been in lulls of studio involvement in the past.  It’s no coincidence that many films on ‘best of’ lists are created by auteurs from the 1970s (although I should point out that there are no shortage of films created by stylistic directors beforehand).  Although the idea of ‘auteur’ had been around for decades, an argument could be made that director worship truly took off in the 1970s with films like The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Jaws, and Annie Hall.
The success of these films encouraged studios to put more projects in the hands of these up-and-coming directors, fresh and eager to tell new stories and make more films.  As big as the idea became in the 1950s and 1960s, it can be very easily argued that the idea experienced a rebirth in the 1970s, shaping very much the idea and examples we have available to us now.  But just as it sparked a resurgence, it also sparked a backlash, a backlash that some would argue was very much needed.
Some, like critic Pauline Kael, have been very outspoken against auteur theory, with plenty of arguments being made against it, such as it’s tendency to elevate lesser films, claiming that a bad movie by a great director is important simply because it has his style.  Other criticisms point out that just because a director forces his style on a film doesn’t necessarily mean it fits the individual film, making each movie more about style than substance (a common criticism of Stanley Kubrick’s work).  Other complaints explain that the idea of ‘auteur’ excuses Prima Donna Director behavior, or encourages overblown expressions of ‘vision’ that end in disasters.
These are valid criticisms.
But there is one that is held above the rest, one final critique that remains, in my opinion, the nail in the coffin against auteur theory being considered so incredibly great, is that: film is, by nature, a collaborative effort.
I asked earlier if this all lies in the hands of the direction, and the fact is, no, it doesn’t.
There’s no Tim Burton or Steven Spielberg style without their signature Production Posses.  Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic work doesn’t rest on his shoulders alone.  Every director, no matter how involved or talented, relies on a network of people, all bearing a substantial portion of the weight of an individual film.  The best directors know this.
The fact is, no matter how talented the director is, there must be a limit to the director’s power, or a film’s production can turn into an egotistical disaster.  By nature, movie productions are group efforts.  Between actors, producers, editors, cameramen, costume designers, transportation, catering, and countless other individuals with vital jobs, films are massive efforts from massive amounts of people.  Every movie, no matter how many ‘hats’ the director wore, is the result of the coordination of several people executing a vision that, in the end, may have been the director’s, but by no means was exclusively his.
“Boiling it down to one person and placing their influence above everyone else makes for bad movies.”  (“The Ultimate Guide to the Best Auteur Directors.” StudioBinder, 12 Feb. 2020, www.studiobinder.com/blog/auteur-theory/.)
In a nutshell?
Are directors important?
Of course they are.  They are still the head of a production, and they still do (often) have identifiable fingerprints on each film they’re a part of.
But with that said, it’s vital to remember that directors are not the end-all and be-all of an individual film.  Auteur theory is a valid element of film study, and by no means should it be omitted, but it should be contextualized in film history, a reminder that no director stands alone.
And the best directors, the auteurs themselves, would agree.
Thank you so much for reading, and I’ll see you in the next article.

Theme and Symbolism in Fiction in a Nutshell - by Becca Puglisi…
on Anne R. Allen: When it comes to storytelling elements, we’re all pretty familiar with symbolism. You basically take an object, word, color, phrase, etc., and apply it in a story to give it a deeper meaning. Tolkien’s one ring (evil) in Lord of the Rings The floating feather (destiny/fate) in Forrest Gump A Mockingjay (rebellion) in The Hunger Games Some symbols are super obvious; other times,…

Gekidan Shining from Utano☆Prince-sama♪ Presents Polaris Interview! "I've broadened my horizons," says Ryunosuke Matsumura (EnterStage)
(Originally posted August 9th, 2018)
"Gekidan Shining" is a stage performance project for the otome series "Utano☆Prince-sama♪" (more commonly known as Uta☆Pri) developed in order to delve into the theater scene. June of last year saw the debut of its first show "Tenka Muteki no Shinobi-do", followed by "Masquerade Mirage" in September and "JOKER TRAP" earlier this year. A revue performance, "SHINING REVUE", featuring all three productions was held due to astonishing fan feedback. This fall, the "Gekidan Shining" project will tackle the "Theater Shining" series, focusing on the theme of "movies".
The first installment in this series and the fourth major performance for the company will be "Polaris", a science fiction tale of a distant future where three young men must work together to protect the Earth from impending crisis while each exploring their own humanity along the way. Expectations are high for how this grand of a story will be portrayed on the stage. We talked to Ryunosuke Matsumura, the role of Tokiya Ichinose, about the shift from the "JOKER TRAP" performance and his own thoughts on "Polaris".
Tumblr media
--To start with, can you tell us about your impressions from working on "Gekidan Shining from Utano☆Prince-sama♪ Presents JOKER TRAP"? It was only a few months ago, but it already feels like its been years since it happened. (laughs) Since there was so much that happened during that short period of time, I was actually a little sad once it had run its course... I needed some time before I could really tell myself "alright, this is really over".
--Were you particularly invested in "JOKER TRAP"? It was a truly fulfilling experience from the first day of practice all the way to the last day of performances. I was able to work with a wonderful group of people - Takamoto-kun in the role of REN, Kohatsu Allen-kun in the role of RAN, and Kikuchi Shuji-kun as CAMUS - that I would love to have the chance to perform alongside again in the future. It was a project I won't forget for the rest of my life.
--Did you have to change much about yourself to get into the role of TOKI during "JOKER TRAP"? To get into the role of TOKI I had to first learn how to act as Ichinose Tokiya and it's a pretty conscious shift I go through. Ever since I decided to turn acting into a career, I knew I had to be strict with myself. Ichinose Tokiya is also very strict with himself, the kind of person who strives to do everything perfectly. It was inspiring and sort of felt like I was getting a look at myself from a different perspective. As a result, I became more in tune with what I'm currently capable of and what I still need to improve on. The whole experience gave me a chance to grow as a person as well as an actor.
--I saw your performance and thought you were an amazing TOKI. I wouldn't necessarily say amazing, but thank you nonetheless. I think the quality of my acting will differ among viewers, but so long as I was able to grow from the performance I'll be pleased with myself. I can't extend my thanks enough to all the fans who cheered us on and gave me strength. As the audience's excitement grew we found ourselves thinking "I want them to have even more fun! I want them to feel even more fulfilled!" and that really drove us from one performance to the next. I'm proud to say that I was part of a performance that brought the audience together as a whole.
--After the "JOKER TRAP" performances were over, you were also involved in a revue show showcasing songs from "Gekidan Shining from Utano☆Prince-sama♪ Presents Tenka Muteki no Shinobi-michi, Masquerade Mirage, and JOKER TRAP" under the name "SHINING REVUE". Every single performance we did was really fun! All of my co-stars had the same mentality of not wanting to lose and to keep raising the bar for themselves. It was definitely refreshing to collaborate with the actors from separate shows during the variety corner.
Tumblr media
--That was also where you first met Shojiro Yokoi, your co-star in "Polaris". That's right. Yokkoi-san (Yokoi's nickname) and I have even started hanging out in our free time. Once "JOKER TRAP" was over, it was nice to have someone who could put up with me. We don't have a senpai/kouhai relationship either which is a plus. (laughs) We haven't known each other for long but I already feel like he's been my best friend for years.
--You've previously said that you're rather shy when it comes to meeting new people. Does this mean you're starting to overcome your shyness? I think Yokkoi-san is a special case. Yokkoi-san seems to be pretty shy himself and that was just sort of an immediate connection between us. (laughs) The more I get to know his bright personality, his smile, and his friendly nature, the more I find myself liking him.
--What's your impression of your other co-star who plays the role of Natsuki Shinomiya, Soichiro Yamakawa? If I had to describe Yamakawa-san in a nutshell, I'd say that he's the definition of "good youth". He was very friendly when we met despite that he's a good few years older than I am and I'm honestly excited to mess around with him backstage as we become better friends. (laughs) It's not stressful being around him so practice is something I look forward to.
--Gekidan Shining from Utano☆Prince-sama♪ Presents Polaris is the first of four in the "Theater Shining" series to make it to the stage. Expectations are high but what sort of work do you think this will be? We don't even have that much information yet on how the science fiction genre will be portrayed on stage but as an "Utano☆Prince-sama♪" fan myself, I'm looking forward to finding out even though I'm a part of it. I trust our director, Hosakayou, to handle the screenplay and production side of things well. I can't wait to jump into the world of "Polaris" once practice starts so that we can truly create something that will satisfy everyone!
Tumblr media
--During the visual shoot, you had photographs taken of many different unique costumes. The pilot suit is my favorite! I've always loved space and robots so I'm excited just to be able to wear it.
--While on the topic, what are some of your favorite science fiction movies and anime? For movies, definitely Star Wars. As for anime, I'm fond of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Basically I like anything where the characters get to control the robots from inside them.
--Do you have anything you'd like to say to everyone who's looking forward to the performance? I'll do my best to give you a satisfying performance that exceeds your expectations! My goal is to have people correlate Ryunosuke Matsumura with Tokiya Ichinose... The least I can do for everyone who's a fan of the original work is fully engulf myself in the world of "Polaris" this time as well.
--The original "Polaris" from Theater Shining had the catchphrase "What is true strength?" What do you think "true strength" is? I know it's cliche but I'd say the answer is love. I think a truly strong person is someone who would sacrifice themselves for someones else. It's not something as simple as "the strength to get back up again no matter how many times you fall" or "the desire to repay someone" or even "the passion to become something greater than you already are". For instance, even if my acting career starts to overwhelm me in the future, I wouldn't be discouraged because I love what I do and cherish where I am already. Although things may get tough, as long as you can love something for what it is then I think that is enough to qualify as growth. I think that's what "true strength" is.

Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
Joan was quizzical, studied pataphysical Science in the home Late nights all alone with a test tube Maxwell Edison majoring in medicine
Maxwell is possibly a descendant of James Clerk Maxwell, who was a pioneer of electromagnetism. Edison is obviously related to Thomas Edison. They’re two inventor types. <...> Part of the fun here is that Edison is connected to the lightbulb and the phonograph, and here we were making a gramophone record.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer)
Painting to Hammer a Nail In was a wooden panel from which a hammer hung on a chain; a jar of nails sat on a chair below it. Viewers were invited to hammer one of the nails into the panel. When its surface was covered, the work was considered finished. When Lennon saw the piece at a 1966 exhibition, he asked Ono if he could hammer an imaginary nail into the panel. His question inspired her to make a version of the work in stainless steel and glass, which she dedicated to him.
Tumblr media
Calls her on the phone Can I take you out to the pictures, Joan?
by blondecasino
But as she’s getting ready to go A knock comes on the door Bang bang Maxwell’s silver hammer Came down upon her head Clang clang Maxwell’s silver hammer Made sure that she was dead
The thing about Maxwell is that he’s a serial killer, and his hammer isn’t an ordinary household hammer but, as I envision it, one that doctors use to hit your knee. Not made of rubber, though. Silver.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer)

Also invoked is the world of the children’s nursery rhyme, where people are always getting their heads chopped off – and of course, there’s also the Queen of Hearts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, who’s always saying, ‘Off with their heads!’
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer)

I've got a girl they call the queen of the hop Well I love my queen Do you know who I mean
(Bobby Darin, Queen of the Hop, 1961)
Back in school again, Maxwell plays the fool again Teacher gets annoyed
Songs like this, where you’re calling someone out on their behaviour, are quite commonplace now, but back then it was a fairly new ‘genre’. The idea of too many people ‘preaching practices’ was definitely aimed at John telling everyone what they ought to do – telling me, for instance, that I ought to go into business with Allen Klein. I just got fed up with being told what to do, so I wrote this song.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Too Many People)
Wishing to avoid an unpleasant scene She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away So he waits behind Writing fifty times I must not be so
I’d been able to accept Yoko in the studio, sitting on a blanket in front of my amp. I’d worked hard to come to terms with that. <...> If he fell in love with this woman, what did that have to do with me? Not only did I have to let him do it, but I had to admire him for doing it. That was the position I eventually reached. There was nothing else I could do but be cool with it.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Too Many People)
But when she turns her back on the boy He creeps up from behind Bang bang Maxwell’s silver hammer Came down upon her head Clang clang Maxwell’s silver hammer Made sure that she was dead
This song is also an analogy for when something goes wrong out of the blue, as I was beginning to find appening around this time in our business dealings.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer)
The whole story in a nutshell is that we were having a meeting in 1969, and John showed up and said he’d met this guy Allen Klein, who had promised Yoko an exhibition in Syracuse, and then matter-of-factly John told us he was leaving the band.* That’s basically how it happened. It was three to one because the other two went with John, so it was looking like Allen Klein was going to own our entire Beatles empire. I was not too keen on that idea.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Too Many People)
*Yes, the song was writing and recorded befor the meeting where John told he was leaving the band but our lads discussed about it during Get Back sessions - and Paul 'was not too keen on that idea', so…
Recording sessions were always good because no matter what our personal troubles were, no matter what was happening on the business front, the minute we sat down to make a song we were in good shape. Right until the end there was always a great joy in working together in the studio. So there we were, recording a song like ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’ and knowing we would never have the opportunity to perform it. That possibility was over. It had been knocked on the head like one of Maxwell’s victims. Bang bang.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021, about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer)
Q: When you were working on McCartney in London, was it strange not being able to bounce ideas off the others? A: Yeah, it was. Because right up until that point I’d been working with John, the best collaborator in the world. Suddenly that was taken away. It was very difficult. But I thought, ‘Well, I’m not going to worry about it. I’m going to sling some ideas down, have a little go on the drums.’ I had my own stuff at the house for my own fun, I wasn’t going into the studio with The Beatles. I wasn’t sweating it. Then suddenly, it became something. “OK, this is an album.”
(Paul McCartney, interview with Tom Pinnock for Uncut, Nov 2020)
(Get me right, it's not about Yoko, John or Paul, it's about the song and some free associations)

10 Principles of Psychology You Can Use to Improve Your mencari mainan
Being able to speak efficiently with others involves people competencies, and Here is eight important ones:™

Even though the fifteen are laying bricks, the first bricklayer could be Mastering the best way to perform Superior bricklaying, or learn profits strategies, or find out supervision expertise.
The lesson is easy: attempt to do it all you as well as 'all' will bury you; teach Some others to do Whatever you do therefore you make a monument.
Jesus taught 11 Males how you can do what he did. Then he left them to hold on although he moved on to other things. From The straightforward act of one gentleman educating eleven others, a church and the biggest, most influential religious movement the planet has at any time known was born.

"TAKERS" (2010) Review
Tumblr media
"TAKERS" (2010) Review Nearly eight years ago, a crime thriller about a group of bank robbers operating in Los Angeles was released to the theaters with little fanfare and a great deal of scorn. Although "TAKERS" earned over twice its budget, it barely made a dent with filmgoers. Out of curiosity, I decided to see what the lack of fuss was all about.
In a nutshell, "TAKERS" began with a successful bank robbery committed by a team of seasoned criminals - including Gordon Cozier, John Rahway, A.J., and brothers Jake and Jesse Attica. Following the success of their heist, the five lead a life of luxury while planning their next job. Unfortunately, a former member of their team named "Ghost" is released from prison. He convinces the group to strike an armored car carrying $20 million. While the bank robbers carefully plot their strategy, a pair of L.A.P.D. police detectives named Jack Welles and Eddie Hatcher investigate their last job. Welles and Hatcher, aware of Ghost's release, finally become aware of the five robbers, and set about apprehending them.
"TAKERS" is basically a run-of-the-mill crime drama filled with complex characters and fast-paced action sequences. The movie also unfolded a peak into the private lives of both the robbers and cops - culminating into a series of familial and romantic frustrations, betrayal, and loyalty. The screenplay written by Peter Allen, Gabriel Casseus, John Luessenhop and Avery Duff pretty much touched upon every topic one could find in a story about bank robbers - aside from the hostage situation featured in movies such as 1975's "DOG DAY AFTERNOON" and 2006's "INSIDE MAN". If I must be honest, the story structure and characterizations in "TAKERS" strongly reminded me of Michael Mann's 1995 opus, "HEAT", but with less complexity. To a certain degree. In a way, I could see why most reviewers and moviegoers failed to warm up to "TAKERS" - aside from the controversial presence of Chris Brown in the cast. It is not exactly an crime epic in compare to some of the other movies I have mentioned. Although Michael Barrett's photography struck me as colorful and glossy, there was nothing unique about it. Some of the dialogue in the film seemed wooden and unmemorable. And I could tell that some of the inexperienced actors like Tip "T.I." Harris had a little trouble handling it. One of the action sequences featured a shoot-out between the five bank robbers and Russian mobsters at Hollywood's Roosevelt Hotel. Both Barrett and director John Luessenhop tried to be ambitious by shooting most of the sequence in slow motion, while maintaining the sound effects - dialogue included - at a regular pace. Paul Haslinger's mournful score somewhat helped the sequence, but the screenwriters' insipid dialogue nearly undermined it. I realize that many might find this hard to believe, but "TAKERS" possessed virtues that managed to outweigh its flaws. One, it possessed a first-rate cast lead by the likes Idris Elba and Matt Dillon. Both actors were superb in their roles as British-born immigrant and current leader of the robbers Gordon Cozier and veteran L.A.P.D. detective Jack Welles. The movie also featured first-rate performances from Michael Ealy, Hayden Christensen, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jay Hernandez, Zoë Saldaña and yes, even Chris Brown. Paul Walker, Glynn Turman and Tip Harris gave solid support as well. I realize that I had been a little critical of Harris' handling of some of the dialogue, but I must admit that his portrayal of the manipulative and vindictive "Ghost" really impressed me. Aside from the Roosevelt Hotel shoot-out, "TAKERS" was filled with some outstanding action sequences, thanks to Luessenhop's direction, Barrett's photography and the editing of both Armen Minasian and Colby Parker, Jr. Some of the best sequences featured Hayden Christensen's (A.J.) encounter with a double-crossing explosive dealer and his crew; the entire heist of an armored truck in downtown Los Angeles; and a chase sequence that featured Chris Brown, Jay Hernandez and Matt Dillon. However, the one virtue that really made "TAKERS" work for me was the screenplay written by Luessenhop and three other writers. I realize that I might attract a good deal of flap of pointing this out, but the screenplay for "TAKERS" possessed one virtue that the highly regarded "HEAT" lacked - the minor plot lines featuring the some of the characters' personal lives had strong connections to the movie's main narrative. This prevented the movie's pacing from dragging at an unnecessarily long pace. Although "TAKERS" actually made a profit at the box, it was only able to do so, due to the movie's low budget. Because otherwise, one might as well call it failure. Well, failure or not, I ended up enjoying "TAKERS" . . . much to my great surprise. It may not be one of the best crime dramas ever made, but I cannot deny that I found it entertaining, suspenseful and pretty exciting.

Equus Interview with Alfie Allen from March 18, 2008
Theatre and Dance Previews
You are in: Beds Herts and Bucks > Entertainment > Theatre and Art > Theatre and Dance Previews > What's Alfie all about?!
Alfie Allen
What's Alfie all about?!
Katy Lewis
The brother of Lily and son of Keith, Alfie Allen tells us about his first big stage role ahead of his arrival in Milton Keynes.
Equus
Milton Keynes Theatre
17-22 March 2008
Mon – Sat: 7.30pm Wed & Sat: 2.30pm
Starring Simon Callow, Alfie Allen, Linda Thorson and Laura O’Toole.
Psychiatrist Martin Dysart (Simon Callow) is brought the most challenging case of his career by magistrate Hester Saloman. Alan Strang (Alfie Allen) seems like a normal 17-year-old. His life is routine and his family loving. However, Alan’s passion for horses and his first experience with a girl, stable-hand Jill has led him to behave in the most devastating way. Only Dysart seems able to grasp the answer to this psychological puzzle.
With actor father Keith, music star sister Lily and film producer mother Alison Owen (Shaun of the Dead), it may have been inevitable that Alfie Allen would pursue a career in the spotlight.
He is undoubtedly the latest rising star of the Allen family, having appeared alongside Keira Knightley in the blockbuster film Atonement and who can also be seen at the moment on the big screen in The Other Boleyn Girl.
Alongside that, he has just turned his attention to the stage and can currently be seen in his first major role, alongside Simon Callow in Peter Shaffer’s award winning play Equus, where he plays troubled teen Alan Strang, the role which also brought Daniel Radcliffe critical acclaim in the West End last year.
But Alfie first came to public attention when his sister wrote a song about him - "Derek". OK, it's "Alfie", where the lyrics included the lines:
Ooooo deary me My little brother's in his bedroom smoking weed I tell him he should get up cos it's nearly half past three He can't be bothered cos he's high on THC I ask him very nicely if he'd like a cup of tea I can't even see him cos the room is so smoky
And since then, his various expulsions from school in a turbulent early life have been well-documented. So, what’s Alfie really all about? Well, as it turns out, he seems to be a rather thoughtful young actor who is thoroughly enjoying his new role on the stage. I spoke to him during the Equus tour where he told me more.
How would you describe Equus?
Alfie: It’s a play about a boy’s love for horses and the problems that arise during it – and that’s it in a nutshell, a really short way of putting it. It kind of questions what is normality and who’s got the right to say what is sane and what is insane and why is this boy’s passion for horses so wrong. That’s kind of what Simon Callow’s part, Martin Dysart does. He questions it and gets pulled into it. He’s supposed to be analysing this boy’s behaviour but starts admiring it.
So Alan Strang, your character, has got a kind of condition, and Simon Callow’s role is to look at it and while he’s looking at it, he begins to question whether what Alan is doing is actually normal and everybody else is wrong?
Alfie: That’s completely what it’s a about, yes.
Alfie Allen in Equus
This is a subject that’s always interested me – who has got the right to say what’s normal or not?
Alfie: Completely! That’s what Peter (Shaffer – the playwright) said to me when I had a meeting with him. He said that what made him write the play was that he started thinking about things like, why do some men like blonde girls, what makes us like these things, what makes us who we are? It’s just a very interesting play that raises a lot of issues.
Alan Strang is described as a horse-crazed anguished creative, yet disturbed, teen. Is that how you’d describe him?
Alfie: Yes. In the play there’s a couple of lines where the mother says he’s a very gentle sensitive young boy, which he is, yet he still does these terrible, terrible crimes, which is what it’s kind of all about really.
And he’s under a psychiatrist, but the play is questioning what’s normal and what’s not, so in a sense, is the play having a pop at psychiatry as a profession?
Alfie: Maybe it was when it was written in 1973, but I think that now, the methods of psychiatry have changed so much that I don’t think it’s having a pop at psychiatry, I think it’s almost just having a pop at authority really. I say that, but it’s so broad really, and that’s why I think people should just come and see it because everyone will have their own opinion of it. It really covers so many issues. It’s a very interesting play and I think whoever comes to see it, whatever age they are, or sex they are, they can bring something different away from it.
It’s well known that Daniel Radcliffe played this part in the West End and there was a big hoo hah about him being naked. Obviously you are doing that too – how do you prepare for something like that?
Alfie: You just do it really. I went to the gym a lot to keep myself in shape, not really to make myself look good but to keep healthy because it’s such a demanding part. But in terms of the nudity, funnily enough, it was harder doing it in the rehearsal rooms than on the stage for the first time. Because when you’re doing it in front of 900 people you don’t know, it’s easier than doing it in front of 20 people that you do know. But the first time you do it, you just do it.
You’ve done quite a few films recently but this is your first stage role, was that daunting?
Alfie: It was at first but I’ve learnt so much going along. I thought theatre would be a little but more difficult, but to be honest I don’t think you can even compare the two, I think they’re so different. Obviously in theatre you work chronologically so you kind of know where your emotions are supposed to be and you’re always on top of things, and as an actor you always know what’s coming next.
I haven’t played a huge role like this in TV and film but I think I can basically take what I’ve learned in doing theatre and apply it to TV and film. In those, I could be doing my most important scene on the first day of filming and then go back to the beginning the next day, so you need to know where your emotions are.
Theatre seemed more difficult at first, but once I got into it, you kind of go into autopilot on the stage, and always know where you are supposed to be.
As you say, it’s a very demanding role. Have you found it quite easy to relate to the character?
Alfie: Yes, but I think any actor of my age would find something in this play to relate to. I think that’s how any actor would make their performance convincing, by bringing an element of themselves into the character.
You can say to actors that you’ve got to be the character and really get into it but you have to make it realistic by bringing an element of yourself into it.
I saw a psychiatrist when I was younger because I had ADHD and I had some problems with authority, so I guess I can kind of relate to that in a way. I know what it’s liked to be probed and to be asked questions where people are looking for a certain answer, and are trying to pull something out of your answer. So, in terms of that I knew what it was like to see a psychiatrist, but in terms of the love for horses it was kind of hard to relate to.
During rehearsals I went to a stable up in Wimbledon, and I got to groom horses – and there’s a very important part in the play where I have to groom a horse – and I definitely saw the sensual side of it. It was strange being up close and personal to horses like that but I could kind of see what Peter was thinking when he wrote the play, and about why Alan was like this. I could see where his love for horses came from.
I read a quote from you that said you were born angry! Do say if you didn’t say it, but it’s been well-documented that you’ve been expelled from various schools so are you an anguished creative too?
Alfie: Well, I’m just like any person really, if you are pushed too far you can crack, and get angry but I don’t think I said I was born angry!

It’s also well-known that you come from a family of performers, so was it inevitable that you would act? Were you encouraged or discouraged from performing?
Alfie: Neither, I always wanted to do it. Obviously I saw dad, but I didn’t see him in a film or something and say ‘oh wow that’s what dad does, I want to do that’. It was more seeing him with his friends and with other people and seeing how he made people laugh and suddenly just create a character out of thin air. I think that’s what made me want to be an actor.
It took me a while to realise that’s what dad does for a living, but even at school I was a bit of a class clown, and did impersonations of people and was good at drama – I did GCSE. I always knew I wanted to be an actor, it wasn’t like mum or dad encouraged or discouraged me. To be honest my dad told me when I started acting that 95 per cent of it was about rejection and I soon discovered that by going to auditions and not getting jobs for about three or four years, that was kind of my drama school really. I was going to auditions and being turned away the whole time, but then it started to go well for me.
Harry Enfield was also a kind of step-father to you. Did he have an influence on you do you think?
Alfie: Probably yes. He was a very, very nice person and a very funny guy. Me and my friend went out to dinner with him recently and my friend said he can see a lot of his humour in me so he must have had an influence in some way. As a child I think that any kind of male living in the house would have an influence on you.
The media have put you and your sister in a sort of new cool Britannia set of young up and coming stars – how do you feel about that? Do you think you are?!
Alfie: Well – if people want to call me that great! [laughs] But I don’t really pay attention to all that to be honest, I just get on with the job that I’m doing. I just live in the present I guess and don’t really read the papers.
Obviously you do get press attention – how do you deal with that?
Alfie: I just ignore it! Some friends call me up now and again and say ‘have you seen what they read about you in the paper’ and I say ‘no I didn’t see it and I don’t want to see it’! I just get on with it. I’m an actor - I act - I don’t want to be a celebrity.
Have you read really ridiculous things about yourself that just aren’t true?
Alfie: No – I don’t read much of it but some people tell me some funny things. I know that after my first night in Equus someone put the heading ‘Willy Allen’, which I thought was hilarious! But other than that I don’t really pay attention to it.
What’s next for you? Or do you just play it by ear?
Alfie: I have an idea of what I’m doing after this but at the moment I just want to concentrate on this and see what happens. I really do live by the motto that I just want to live in the present. I don’t really like to plan things too much. I’m quite un-organised to be honest so I just take things as they come.
Do you want to do more stage work?
Alfie: Definitely more stage work! I would love to do more stage, it’s very stimulating, and it’s exhilarating. But people have asked me what would you rather do, film, TV or theatre but I don’t think you can compare them. Film and TV are probably quite similar but theatre is just a thing on its own. It’s a complete learning curve which is fantastic, I’m enjoying every second of it.
Did you like the song that Lily wrote about you?
Alfie: I loved it!
Was it true?
Alfie: At a point it was yes! That was when I was much younger so I’ve grown out of it now!
