This is a repeat of a post I made a year ago. I am preparing to participate in ‘Squash and Stretch’ international performance art festival at Oxford Brookes University on Sat 5th May, organised by Veronica with Peta Lloyd for LAPER Live Art Performance Research Group. As I do I again want to acknowledge this courageous artist who has had to work so hard to remain in this country and as well as making her own work and showing it globally she gives huge amounts of her time to encouraging other artists and to promoting performance art in Oxford. It needs saying.  

“As an artist I am mostly preoccupied with my own art, and in the limited time that I have to make it, with doing so as well as I can do. I spend a lot of my time developing the best strategies for reaching my audience but most of my time is taken up with earning a living. If I am lucky by doing work that uses my art skillset, and if unlucky it doesn’t.  I follow trends in current practice and view exhibitions but I am not overly concerned with what other artists do or don’t do. I know that there are lots of others and I think that they are all worthy of my respect and admiration. I know what a tough job it is and how much you really need to mean it to keep on doing it. I admire some and ignore others and my heroes change regularly depending on where I am in my own work. I have always found the “who is your favourite artist ?” question impossible to answer, I don’t want to be static enough to have one !

There are a few living artists however who I think are just fantastic and I am in awe of and Veronica Cordova de la Rosa is one such artist. I doubt I have ever generated an intensity of truth with such vehemence, integrity and beauty as she does in her work. It is the kind of art that can only erupt out of someone when there is intense intent and integrity behind it and her work, which gives visibility and voice to the disappeared of Mexico is powerful, impressive and bounded by thorough research. An academic and a truly modern and global artist we are lucky to have her working here in the UK.

She has kindly agreed to come and perform for FESTAL FAVOURS, the performance art programme that I am curating for the Charlbury Festival in June and I am so excited to soon meet her and work with her. Some people merit fandom and she is one !”
