YLC Spotlight: Hannah & Anjali
Tumblr media
Dr. Jouni Uitto’s molecular laboratory at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia has been busy in EB-related research. This summer the laboratory hosted several undergraduate and medical students working on EB. Among them were Hannah Mumber, a 2nd year medical student at Boston University School of Medicine (sitting, second from right), and Anjali Rajan, a Senior at New York University (shown with Dr. Uitto). Both Hannah and Anjali are members of debra of America’s Young Leadership Committee. Hannah dedicated her research in honor of her sister Rebecca who died at an early age of junctional EB. Anjali is herself affected with a mild form of Dominant Dystrophic EB. “I am extremely pleased that these young and bright students have elected to join our laboratory in EB research”, said Dr. Uitto. “Their efforts have significantly contributed to our progress in finding treatments and cure for different forms of EB”.
Read about Hannah and Anjali’s experiences, in their own words, below:
Hannah: “Epidermolysis Bullosa, a disease that even most doctors have never heard of, has had a huge influence on my decision to pursue a career in medicine. My sister Rebecca passed away from Junctional EB, and the impact her illness left on my family sparked my desire for a vocation dedicated to caring for children and families going through similar situations. I have been fortunate to have a wonderful support system that has helped me to move towards achieving my goal, and I am currently a second-year medical student at the Boston University School of Medicine.
While Boston is known to be a medical mecca, the opportunities to take part in EB-related research are few and far between. With the last free summer of my education approaching, I knew that it was time to pursue my goal of getting involved with the EB community, and so last spring, I began searching for labs focused on EB. Not surprisingly, I quickly came across Dr. Jouni Uitto’s DEBRA Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia. Coincidentally, my mother remembers meeting Dr. Uitto and Dr. Angela Christiano over 25 years ago when she and my father brought my brother to test for his EB carrier status soon after my sister’s death. Everything seemed like it was meant to be, which was confirmed when Dr. Uitto graciously responded within a half hour to my email inquiry and invited me to spend the summer in his lab conducting EB research.
Working with Dr. Uitto and the rest of his lab members did not fall short of my expectations. My ambitions were matched with patient mentorship, and I learned more about dermatology and molecular genetic testing than I thought possible in one short summer. What I loved most about working in Dr. Uitto’s lab was the warm, collaborative environment he fostered everywhere from our bustling lab room to our weekly conference meetings. It would be difficult to find a lab group equally as passionate and dedicated to finding diagnoses, treatments, and cures for their patients. While it is difficult to see the suffering that so many EB patients must endure, I trust that the research I helped to conduct will one day contribute to improved outcomes for these patients. This summer research program was just the beginning of my work with EB; I hope to continue along this path to be able to serve EB patients both as a researcher and as a physician. I could not have asked for a more meaningful and enriching summer experience, and, as both a mentee and a future physician, I am very grateful to Dr. Uitto for his exemplary dedication to EB.”

Anjali: “I was inclined to work with Dr. Uitto this summer to learn more about Epidermolysis Bullosa and other rare inherited skin disorders because I see myself as a patient scientist, as I have EB myself. My project has been focused on understanding the correlation between the many different mutations found in the different sub-types of EB with the clinical symptoms of the patients. This can help aid clinicians, researchers, and EB patients in understanding the disease better.
I really enjoyed witnessing the passion and dedication that the researchers and clinicians in this lab express each day through their work. Additionally, I enjoyed being part of this group that is so focused on improving the lives of patients with these debilitating and devastating conditions. My least favorite part of this experience was studying young patients with severe complications; it was upsetting to realize the suffering that they are forced to endure - but this also served as a reminder of this research's exigency. I am so grateful to have learned more about genetics in a medical context, translational research, and the molecular mechanisms that cause the conditions we categorize as EB. After participating in research this summer, I do believe it is definitely something that I will consider pursuing in the future. The fervor and commitment for medicine that exists here has the means to lead to major breakthroughs in disease understanding and eventually, treatments and cures.”
Thank you to Hannah and Anjali for their dedication and hard work in support of the EB Community!

What is Epigenetics? 🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬 All of your cells contain all of your 22,000 genes, but not all of them need to be active all the time. They need to be turned on or off, in the right tissue, at the right moment, and so we have incredible networks of control systems in our genomes – circuits, programmes, hierarchies. Epigenetics literally means “in addition to genetics” and is one such system – modifications to DNA without altering the gene sequence itself. Think of DNA as an orchestral score, the notes on the page unchanging. But the annotations on the manuscript will dictate how the music sounds, with crescendo and lento and adagio. The conductor and orchestra play their annotated manuscript, and each performance is unique, even when the original scores are identical. http://bit.ly/2iffKh5 #epigenetics #molecularbiology #education #immunology #cellculture #cancer #thomasjeffersonuniversity #cancerresearch #phillymaking #nationalmuseumofafricanamericanhistoryandculture #oprah #jakibyard #mariananderson #louisarmstrong http://ift.tt/2sZNJjf
