[Too soon, ik, but I either post this now or not at all.]
Ok so I couldn't actually post about this until Sign10 came out for everyone but I've been wondering for A While what the next adventure would be, cause it absolutely has to have a happy ending (see, everyone kinda knew that something will go wrong in Sign but yea this is why I had to wait, sad ending confirmation...).
And also it's gonna come out at Christmas so. Gotta be a happy/chill story
And I've been thinking it could be one of the important stolen documents cases. The Naval Treaty or The Second Stain to be more precise. Don't know if I would describe them as chill, given the *if these leak there will be major international unrest or even war* of it all, but. Happy endings!
And I couldn't really decide between them because (spoilers ig)
Nava has 1. No murder (as far as i remember ??) and 2. Happy ending
And Seco has a murder at one point, which is not very Christmasy. But on the other hand the ending of Seco is. Unusually... Joyous? I just read it these days, I think joyous is the right word.
Like I thought Nava would be more likely but was rooting for Seco. So that kinda evened them out. But still I only had these two stories as viable suspects. But I haven't read all the canon.
So i WAS planning to ask u guys hey, what are some chill happy ending stories that come to mind?
Which, question still stands BUT!!!!!
Yk on patreon they give us art prompts that hint at the next story? Well the latest just dropped and let's just say it mentions a safe/lockbox AND floorboards
!!!!
Was I right was I right was I right did I actually guess based on vibes? Cause that sounds to me like The Second Stain
Plsss I wanna be right soo badddd my only hints were vibes ahahahha pllsssss let me be right
#sherlock & co#the sign of four#part 10#ok it's not actually about that but I'm including then cuz I'm guessing some might have the tags blocked#ehh yeah#the sign of four spoilers#the second stain#the naval treaty#mayhaps#theories#I've had the âit's gonna be nava or secoâ thought like a week agooo#anyway I was REALLY excited to see SAFE/ LOCKBOX in that art prompt#didn't even see âfloorboardsâ at first lol

đ, đ¶, đ„ for the ask game!
HI ROOK!!! thanks for the ask!
đ: whatâs one headcanon you have?
(based on a conversation between me and @inspectorghoul)
when zane was rebuilt after s3, his new design leaned towards being functional over being more human-like. this meant that he started making a bunch of involuntary computer noises - when he started up, when he detected something, when he got damaged.
then jay started trying to mimic these noises - not because he wanted to make fun of zane, but because itâs a cool noise and it tickles something in his brain, yâknow? and although zane wasnât too fond of it in the beginning, he grew to appreciate it and even ended up helping jay perfect the frequencies of each noise.
flash forward several years later:
kai, going to get water at 3am, hearing beeping noises: zane? is that you?
jay, crouched on the kitchen table: [windows start up noise]
đ¶: whatâs your favourite ninjago song?
the various weekend whips are classics in their own rights (shoutout to the pirate whip and the arcadian whip), and i like the dr intro more than i thought i would! but in terms of soundtrack, the song i listen to the most is built to protect - and i also love the music playing during one of the final eps of seabound (not going to specify bc i know you havenât seen it yet!). both of those songs get me every single time and i will never not be emotional about them.
đ„: whatâs your favourite fight scene?
i really like the more recent fights more; they just seem more much fluid and dynamic - especially the fights in dragons rising! but iâd have to say one of nyaâs fights in seabound, because the way they animate the water and how she fights with it is amazing!! (and also because jay jumps in to help later)
(ask game)

Me, rereading old entries in my diary: "I really need to start including the stuff that makes me feel good or at the very least okay in this thing, because I think I've read the line, 'I dunno, I'm just tired.' a touch too often after some of the most depressing bullshit I've yet to encounter, and I write angst for crying out loud." Also me, reading my diary: "Yeah, that really was some bull hockey, huh? Man, volume two of this series is something else..."
#lamp rambles#volume one is stored in a lockbox because it has angsty teenage thoughts in it#we speak not of volume zero#that's the one my mom read when I was eight#good times#that last bit was sarcasm

Some days, it's ok to be tired. It's ok to just be. It's ok to grieve for that which you have grieved before. It's ok to finally grieve that which you thought you didn't need to. It's ok to. It's ok.
#wilderness rambles#mentally emotionally fucking exhausted#cherishing a past relationship with someone we thought we would never get to see again#grieving that we were ripped away and put the wound in a lockbox sank deep into storage#grieving unsaid apologies in shaking hands#but what is grief if not love perservering?

April Fools: Telling them you're pregnant as a joke
It's April's Fools! And you want to pull a harmless little prank on your boyfriend! Hmm, there's pretending to break up...no that's mean. There's moving all of the furniture in the house 2 inches slightly to the right...but that'd be too much effort. Oh, you got it! Get a fake pregnancy test and tell him you're pregnant!
Yes, this will be extremely funny and you can think of no ways that this can go wrong! But if you did it on the first, he probably wouldn't take you seriously, so instead you opted to do it the night before as you two were getting ready for bed.
"Hey sweetheart? I have something really important to tell you..." You took a deep breath, presenting the joke pregnancy test you got from the store and said, "I'm pregnant."
multi (randomly chosen) x gn!reader
[tw/cw} - sexual humor, crack, dumbassery afoot, some softer vibes, takes place post-graduation
[note] - technically you could consider this to be implied afab reader, but it's a lot funnier if we want to imagine mpreg instead loool. I thought it would be funny to write something for April Fool's and this is kinda sorta related to what I'm currently writing in the next chapter for 2-3-6? anyways enjoy this was funny!
Also the seven guys were chosen by a wheel spinner so yaaaay
Deuce
Glass shattered against the wood floors, Deuce dropping his cup of water, making you jump. Your eyes flitted to the glass and puddle on the ground, before footsteps made you look back up and yelp in surprise.
Deuce was right up in your face, hands grasping tightly at your biceps and squeezing.
"Really?" Deuce looked like he was about to cry, a trembling smile on his lips. "We're gonna be parents? Oh...we're gonna be parents, I'm gonna be a dad!"
You immediately felt your heart clench in guilt. He looked so happy, his hands cradling your face and fluttering it with soft kisses. You didn't want to disappoint him and tell him it was a prank, but you had to as he climbed over the bed to grab his phone.
"I gotta tell Mom!"
"No wait!"
Launching yourself on top of him, you swatted his hands away from the phone, though he managed to grab it. You two then wrestled in the bed, hands pulling at the phone as Deuce looked at you in confusion.
"Why aren't you letting me call her?" Deuce managed to one up you as he finally pinned you on your back, though your hands still tightly clenched to his phone like a lifeline. "Don't you want to tell her?"
"Cause it was a prank! For April Fool's" Deuce froze, letting go of the phone and staring down at you in distraught.
"We're not having a baby then?"
"Oh baby...no Deuce I'm not pregnant, I'm sorry." You finally managed to wiggle your way up to throw your arms around him, giving him a tight hug. "I thought you might have a funny reaction, I didn't realize you'd be so happy, I wouldn't've pulled this prank if I did."
"Oh...okay." Deuce returned the hug, hiding his face into the crook of your neck as he mumbled. "So...do you want to have a baby?"
"Only if it's yours." Pressing a kiss to his temple, you tilted Deuce up by his chin and gave him a smile.
"Let's go to bed, and talk more in the morning, yeah? I love you."
"Ha, okay." Deuce gave you a tender kiss in return. "I love you too."
Ruggie
"Oh gods help me." Ruggie looked as if he wanted to both kiss you, and puke his guts out. "I don't have baby money."
You took a deep breath and bit the inside of you cheek to keep you from laughing. This was a little mean. Okay actually this was really mean, but Ruggie was giving you some very funny reactions. So you decided to keep the prank going.
"It's okay Rugs, I have a little bit saved up, we canâ"
"I think I have that bracelet set from graduation that I can sell. It's from Leona so it should give us good money." Ruggie rushed pass you in your small apartment to dig under the bed and grab a lockbox.
"Oh myâRuggie you don't need to get our emergencyâ"
"We should start looking at thrift shops and the nearby market for baby clothes. I can ask Nana if she has any of my old stuff, I think she might still have my crib and bassinet."
You couldn't help the snort that left your mouth as Ruggie smacked his head on the bedframe, making him turn around to glare at you.
"Hey! No laughing, this is your fault!"
"What!" You scoffed, though giggles still escaped you as he tossed the lockbox on the bed and grabbed his laptop. "It takes two to tango dumbass."
"Yeah yeah! Look we gotta get prepared, they give you free stuff at a baby shower right? We should make a registryâoooooh, make sure Kalim gets it. He'll by everything and then some."
You were now full on laughing, watching as Ruggie concentrated on some website on his laptop. Looking closure, you noticed that he already was bringing up three different websites for registries.
"Pfft! Ruggie, babe, waitâ"
"You're real close with Malleus, think if we make him the godfather, he'll hook us up with a bunch of stuff from the treasuryâ"
"Ruggie! Stop!" Cackles were escaping your mouth as you finally managed to slam the laptop shut. Ruggie looked on in exasperation and confusion as you threw yourself on his lap.
"HaâsnrrkâIt was a prank! Oooh, you should've seen the look on your faceâpppft! Ahaha!"
Ruggie relaxed, collapsing backwards into the bed, and rubbed his face.
"Oh thank the heavens. I mean, I would've stepped up no matter what. But I really mean it when i say I don't got baby money."
Jade
You think you got him this time. After years of trying to pull on on him every April, you think you actually got him this time!
You thought so, until Jade had smiled and brought out a second test from under the bathroom sink. Since when did he start keeping pregnancy tests?! When he handed you the test, telling you to take another, "Just to be sure".
You were backed into a corner now, you're positive Jade knew that this was a prank. And he was going to catch you red-handed when this test came back as negative.
Which is why you were now staring down at the second test, with two red lines indicating a positive result, in utter confusion. You were positive you weren't actually pregnant, but here you were. One fake, and one real test, telling you the same thing.
And Jade? He was just hugging you from behind, you sitting in his lap on the bed, smiling into your skin as he fluttered kisses down your neck.
"How exciting, don't you think so my pearl? What a surprise, it's a good thing we double checked with two tests, yes?"
"Yeah...sure..." You mumbled, still dazed as Jade's hands wandered under your shirt and kissed up to your cheeks.
"Yes, it's unfortunate..." Jade let out a wistful sigh as he squeezed you tight against him and murmured into your ears. "That they're both fake tests, hmm?"
"Huh? Hmm...aaaaaaaaaAAAAAHHH! YOU ASS!"
Jade couldn't help but let out a laugh as you started thrashing in his hold, your arms reaching behind to grab at him.
"Oooh? I thought you'd be excited, unless you were hoping to see me disappointed? My, my, how cruel you are to me, your love!"
Letting out a sniffle, Jade looked up at you from his eyelashes with a coy, sweet look.
"Such a cruel human..."
You groaned, turning your head to kiss his cheek and murmur, "I'm sorry Jade, I'll make it up to you, okay? Whatever you want."
Honestly, you should know better than you say things like that, as Jade quickly had you pinned underneath him, a manic grin on his face.
"Whatever I want? How generous of you my pearl!" Jade brought you up to be flush against him, pressing his lips against yours in a passionate kiss, a string of saliva breaking as you separated.
"Aaah~ Sure, sure, yeah. Whatever you want..." You replied in a daze, wincing as his hands grabbed at your stomach and squeezed.
"Then let's make sure we can get a real positive and let me fill you up, yes?"
"Yeah~"
Jamil
"Uh-huh."
You stood awkwardly behind Jamil as he continued writing in his journal, as he always did for the end of the day.
"Jami...did you hear me?"
"Yep."
He put his pen down, stretching until his back gave a satisying pop, and getting up to head to the bathroom. You followed in confusion and frustration as he just reached in the drawer for a brush and started loosening his braids.
"Sooo...you heard me say I was pregnant...right?"
You crossed your arms and started tapping your foot. Is this how he's reacting to the (fake) news? You just told him you two were having a baby, and he's just...brushing his hair? Ignoring you standing there, very obviously annoyed??
"I did."
Jamil paused, looking at your through the mirror, to which you gave him an expectant look. You're pretty sure you saw him smirk as he resumed, following through on his nighttime routine, all with you glaring daggers into him.
You stood there the entire time, watching as he finally finished, rubbing lotion into his hands as he turned to you, giving you an amused smile.
"Oh, were you expecting a bigger reaction?"
Scoffing, you put your hands on your hips and hissed. "Uh, yeah? I just told you we're having a baby, and you're acting like I just told you it's gonna rain tomorrow!''
Yeah, this might be a prank, but damn it! If this is how he was going to react to such big news, maybe you two needed to have a sit down and talk aboutâ
Jamil grabbed you by your cheeks and squeezed, making you purse your lips as he grinned down at you. He clearly found your building rage cute and amusing.
"Yeah, well, word to the wise habibi, next time you want to pull a prank on me, make sure it's not through our shared shopping accounts. I got the delivery email for your fake test yesterday."
"Oh, fuck me!"
"Oh? If you insist. Practice for when we want the real thinâow!"
Jamil started laughing as you pinched and poked at him, face furiously warm in both embarrassment and anger.
Vil
You swallowed nervously, giving Vil a small, shy smile as he stared down at you with displeased look. He'd just finished his routine for the evening, removing his gloves after letting his creams absorb into his skin.
"Darling."
"Yes Vil?"
"If you truly wanted to pull such a tasteless prank on me," Vil reached into his vanity, where he pulled out a opened box that looked very familiar "I would expect that you'd be smarter about hiding the evidence."
"WHAT!" You flew over to Vil and reached for the pregnancy test box, which he held just out of your reach. "I threw that away! How'd you even get that?"
"The housekeeper was taking out the trash and noticed the box, though she didn't read the back which clearly states that it's perfect for pranks. Poor thing was so excited that she called both myself and my father."
Vil smacked the top of your head with the box, clicking his tongue at you as you made a sound of understanding.
"Ooooh, she told Eric?"
"Yes she did, imagine both his and my own disappointment when she called back again to tell us that it was a joke toy." Vil sighed, though he relaxed into your touch as you wrapped your arms around his waist and kissed his cheek.
"Sorry sweetie, I just wanted to pull an April Fool's prank on you, I guess I didn't thinkâ"
You gasped, startling Vil as you pulled his face down close to yours, despite his protest.
"Hey! My face cream is stillâ"
"You were disappointed?! Awwww, Vil that's so sweet! We can make a baby right now, come on sweetie~"
"What?! Nonononono, I just finished my entire routine, I'll have to start overâACK!"
Vil was swiftly silenced as you both fell into bed.
Idia
With the way Idia was staring at you, you weren't sure if he actually heard you. He was just boring into you with those bright yellow eyes of his, you could practically see the gears turning in his head.
"Ah." HIs voice was meek, squeaky, and barely audible. So he did hear you!
Idia's eyes flickered down to the test in your hands, then back to your face, then back to the test, then back to your face.
Then he fainted.
Thankfully he fainted next to your bed, so after dropping the joke test in a panic, you scrambled to drag him onto the bed, reaching for Idia's phone to text Ortho to come check on him.
Though he was in the room not even a few seconds later, his eyebrows furrowed as he spotted Idia limp in your arms.
"Idia! What happened (Name)? I noticed that his blood-pressure dropped suddenlyâ"
Ortho's eyes dropped to the pregnancy test on the ground, though he narrowed them and stared at you. You could make out his eyes going blank as he scanned you.
"You're not pregnant! So why do you haveâoooooooh! April 1st is in an hour!" Ortho gasped in realization, as you nodded sagely.
"Yep."
"And you're trying to prank him!"
"Uh-huh."
"And then he fainted!"
"I see!" You both remind silent, eyes flickering down to Idia who'd begun shifting awake in your lap.
"...Want to keep it going?"
"Oh absolutely Ortho! Wakey-wakey Idia~"
Silver
"Oh...how'd you get one of those in Briar Valley?"
Silver looked more confused that you had a pregnancy test at all than that it was a positive one. You faltered, popping you lips as you eyed him for a hint that he knew what was actually going on.
"These...aren't common here?"
"No, though perhaps that makes sense." Silver had a gentle smile as he took you into his arms and pressed your foreheads together. "Fae are able to sense these things rather quickly, Lilia told me that it's due to their scents changing."
"Oh! I forget that fae have more sensitive senses, I guess it makes sense."
You almost forgot the original question asked, as you brought back up and showed it to Silver.
"So what do you think?"
"Hmm? Oh about the baby." Silver's smile grew as he wrapped his arms around you, eyes closed in bliss. "It's wonderful, Father will be very happy, though I'm surprised that he didn't mention anything earlier at dinner."
You cursed in your head. Of course fae can sense these things, and it was starting to click for Silver.
"Love, what's tomorrow again?"
"...April 1st."
"As in April Fool's."
"Mmmmmaaaaaybe?"
A sigh escaped his lips as he looked at you in disappointment, though you also make out small laugh under his breath.
"Did Father put you up to this?"
"Surprisingly, no. Though I'm sure he'd be pleased that I'm putting thoughts of kids into your brain."
You laughed nervously, though relaxed as Silver pressed a kiss to your forehead and guided you to bed. You both slipped under the sheets facing each other to wrap your arms and legs together in an embrace.
"Hmm...I wouldn't be opposed." He murmured, your breaths mingling as he was quickly falling asleep. "I think it would be...nice...if it's with you."
You hummed in content, letting Silver tuck his head under your chin and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
"I think it would be nice with you too."

The Least Vulnerable Spot 8x16 spec fic
In which I ask the ultimate questions: under what circumstances would Tommy not attend the memorial procession for Bobby? Also, how silly can I make this?
+
Buck has never considered himself to be that guy, but when a man hands you the viral antidote he stole for you, kisses you on a rooftop backlit by the sunset while a couple of Sikorsky UH-60s hover threateningly, and whispers "Here's looking at you, kid" before ushering you through the rooftop door so you can save your family while a bunch of stone-faced Army guys advance, you tend to have an expectation or two. Like, that he'll pick up his fucking phone when you call.Â
He's left so many voicemails and sent so many texts to Tommy's phone over the last four days that he's pretty sure Verizon has his account flagged, but he thinks Petrea, his account rep, would understand if he explained that his ex-but-maybe-not-ex-boyfriend flew in like a superhero and then ghosted him when Buck needed him the most. She might even dig up a Jilted Before Your Father Figure's Funeral discount for his troubles.Â
It's been a week since they held the procession for Bobby, and not even Buck showing up at Tommy's house the night before and pounding on the door for an hour while shouting that he was yellow-bellied (partly true), a traitor to the 118 name (mostly true), and a lousy lay (bold-faced lie) could make the little coward show his face.Â
So he's done. He is finished with Tommy Kinard and his massive amounts of baggage that would make even Briggs & Riley close up shop, and he's proving it by leaving one final voicemail that isn't influenced by his sadness over Bobby's death, the stress of the last couple of weeks, or by how much Tommy's abandonment has hurt him. He's going to be a rational adult about this. He's going to be the bigger person.
".... This is all to say that I hope you have an amazing life, Tommy," he says into his phone speaker. "I hope it's filled with love and support, and it's meaningful and fulfills your soul. And I hope you fall in love with a beautiful, kind man who treats you right, and I hope you get married and stay together for fifty blissful years, and then I hope you wake up from the coma to realize it was all a dream and you're all alone, because apparently that's what you really want! And I know you were quoting a movie on the rooftop, and you know what? I'm not going to even look up which movie it was! Look at me, kid, or whatever it was you said!"
Buck misses the days when he could snap his phone shut to hang up, because stabbing end call twenty times until his finger actually taps the button just doesn't give him the same kind of satisfaction.Â
Panting for a moment, he pushes all his anger and pain into a little lockbox in the back of his mind, shuts the lid, and takes a breath. Then he pockets his phone and looks up to find everyone in the station frozen, staring at him like he just performed a magic trick or saw a bug on the wall and didn't identify it out loud.
"What?!" he snaps at all of their slack-jawed faces. "Never seen a rational adult before?"
Out of nowhere, a hand lands on his shoulder like a jump scare, and he startles back so hard he almost throws an elbow into Acting Captain Henrietta Wilson's wrinkled nose.
"Hey, Buckaroo," Hen coos. The expression on her face would be more at home on someone who's been tasked with single handedly cleaning up a nuclear meltdown. "Maybe we should put our phones in our lockers so we're not distracted by our very confusing situationships. At least until lunch time when I can escape to Rosetti's to get a break from it."
Buck doesn't whine and he definitely doesn't stamp his feet. "Yeah, but what if he calls?"Â
"You know, he probably would just to tell you the quote is actually Here's looking at you, kid," Hen admits.Â
"I don't get it. Who's looking at me?" Buck mutters, giving his phone the stink eye before looking up. "What are you doing out here? I thought you were doing paperwork."
Hen shrugs with her entire face. "Well, I was, but when you started wailing I thought another raccoon got caught in the vent fan again, so."
For someone who got the job under the worst set of circumstances imaginable, she looks completely at home in the role, the way she always does. Buck's trying like hell to be happy for her, and he is, deep deep deep down, but he'll be the first to admit he hasn't been handling it well. Yesterday she'd brought in a tiny potted succulent and put it in the upper left corner of what was now her desk where a framed photo of Athena, May, and Harry once sat, and Buck accidentally knocked it onto the floor. And accidentally stepped on it. Twice. Accidentally.
She'd stared at him until he started to sweat, then said flatly, "You're buying me two more."
"Yep," he'd agreed. There's now a bigger succulent on the desk and a bushy lemon lime maranta on the windowsill.Â
Whatever she sees on his face makes her roll her eyes, but she puts her hand on his shoulder again and says, "Okay. You get thirty seconds. Lay it on me."
Buck blinks. "Really?"
"Twenty-nine now," Hen says.
Damn, that's generous. Eddie only gave him ten before he tapped out.Â
Squaring his shoulders, Buck lets it all come tumbling out: "I thought this meant something! He threw in with us again and kissed me on the roof and said whatever he said and it was supposed to mean something! You don't just bail after that! He was supposed to be here! He was supposed to support me at the funeral! He was supposed to be there for me at the procession and then fuck the sadness out of me afterward! I had a plug in and everything!"
"Time's up," Hen breaks in, a look of abject horror on her face.Â
Buck throws his hands up. "That had to only be twenty seconds at most."
Hen's eyes dart down to his hips, then back up to his face. Her glasses magnify them, so they look bigger and wider than usual. She looks like one of those Precious Moments figurines his mom used to collect. "You had aâBuck, that procession went for a full mile."
"Believe me," Buck grumbles, shifting to try and escape the chafed ache that refuses to go away. "I'm well aware. Serves me right for going with the biggest one I own, but, like, I thought Tommy was gonnaâ"
"Aaaand we're done." Hen executes a perfect about-face and marches in the direction of the admin offices.Â
Buck calls after her, "Bobby would've heard me out!"
"Bobby would've jammed pencils in his ears!" Hen shouts over her shoulder. "Which is exactly what I'm about to do!"
This is exactly what he means when he tells Dr. Copeland that no one ever listens to him.Â
He's about to go see if he can corner Chimney somewhere with limited escape routes when his phone starts buzzing in his pocket. His heart gets caught up in a dizzying storm of excitement, dread, and grim satisfaction, because he knew Tommy wouldn't be able to deal with the idea of Buck not looking the quote up.
But when he takes his phone out of his pocket, the incoming call isn't from Jaw of Gibraltar â€ïž, but Lucy Donato.
Sighing, he takes the call. "Uh, h-hey Lucyâ"
She cuts him off immediately with a curt, "Look, don't think I'm not grateful or anything. We all are. Not being forced to listen to sad James Ingram songs day in and day out has been wonderful, but it's been two weeks already and we need our lead pilot back."
"Iâwhat? Lucy, I hate to tell you, butâ"
"Tell me precisely zero details about how dick drunk you are, Buckley," Lucy says flatly. "Just tell me when you're letting him go. Cap's getting antsy and Baxter's been on call for so long that his wife is ready to kill him and turn his body into mulch."
Buck stares at Engine 2 until it blurs. "You... are talking about Tommy, right?"
"No, I'm talking about the other dipshit I work with who committed domestic terrorism because your asshole is a Disneyland attraction." Buck makes a face but doesn't correct her. Tommy once likened sex with Buck to riding Big Thunder Mountain for the first time. "He's missed like four shifts. Any more and Cap is gonna have to, like, make some calls. Where the fuck's our pilot, Buckley?"
"He hasn't been in at all?" He echoes faintly, a sinkhole opening in his gut.Â
Lucy makes a sound of disgust. "Frankly, I can't believe they dropped your charges. You're way too dangerous to be allowed among the general populace."
The Army colonel who swanned into Chim's hospital room like he expected them to scatter like roaches had taken one look at all of them and scoffed. "Every fiber of my being hates what I'm about to say, but I can't handle another phone call from Sergeant Grant, so: on behalf of the United States government, we're dropping all federal charges for everyone in this room. If I see any of you ever again, I will throw you into a hole so deep it'll make the Kola Borehole look like something a kid dug at the beach."
Except not everyone was in the hospital room that day.
Buck squeezes his eyes shut. "Hey, so I need to call you back."
"Wait, Dana wants to talk to you."
With a yelp of pure terror, Buck stabs his phone until the call ends, then immediately calls Jaw of Gibraltar â€ïž. It goes right to voicemail, like it's been doing, and now Buck is pretty sure he knows why.
"Heeeeeeeey," he says through a grimace. "So, uh, I need you to ignore all the other voicemails and texts I sent you. Um, it's entirely possible the reason you haven't been picking up my calls might be, uh, sort of my fault, but just think: someday when we've been married for fifty years, we'll probably still be laughing about this whole thing."
Inbox full, the automated voice cheerfully tells him.
Cringing, he calls Athena.
+
Buck has never actually seen a federal prisonâJamestown was a regular prison, and he didn't have enough time to stop and take it all inâso he's not sure what to expect, but when they fly over Victorville Medium-Security Federal Correctional Institute, he's surprised to see it looks more like an army base than anything.Â
The pilot who picked him, Athena, and LAFD union lawyer Bernadette Kaine up from Harbor Oneâand that had sucked, because the entire Harbor crew was standing on the tarmac giving him the evil eye as he boarded, and while Dana didn't physically drag her thumb across her throat he could see the same sentiment in her blank expressionâdidn't actually introduce himself, but his name was embroidered on the arm of his flight suit.Â
"Your last name is 'Goodenough'?" Buck had asked, grinning. "'Pilot Goodenough'? Hopefully your flying is a lot better than your name suggests!"
Pilot Goodenough stared stone-faced out the windshield and said, "We might hit turbulence during the flight."
And they did, but oddly only whenever Buck unbuckled his belt. The last time Buck went to get up, Athena threatened to shoot him.
When they land, Colonel Whatshisname is there to greet them, and he looks both exhausted and furious to see him and Athena again.Â
"Sergeant Grant," the colonel acknowledges through gritted teeth, ignoring Buck entirely. "It's such a pleasure to see you again."Â Â
Athena simply crosses her arms and stares him down, which is impressive to watch, considering the guy's like 6'7". He's shriveling under her scrutiny before Buck's very eyes.Â
"Colonel, it appears you forgot something," Athena says, lightly and terrifyingly.
"Someone," Buck interjects, with nowhere near the same impact.
Colonel Whatshisname sighs, looks heavenward at the departing helicopter as though he'd like nothing more than to flag Pilot Goodenough back down to take him away, then beckons them all inside.
When they get to whoever's office the colonel commandeered, Buck is almost completely distracted from why they're there by the sheer amount of rubber ducks that clutter up every flat surface in the room. No two are the same. There's even a little viking duck, complete with a mace.Â
"Can Iâ" Buck starts slowly, inching his hand toward a duck that looks like a firefighter.
Colonel Whatshisname sits down at the desk, hard. "No."
"That's fair."
"Colonel Spade," Bernadette begins, opening her worryingly bulging briefcase. "I'd like to begin by thanking you for your tiâ"
"Colonel, you know why we're here," Athena cuts in, taking the seat on the other side of the colonel's desk. She has to clear a path through all the ducks lined up at the edge so she can rest her clasped hands there. "When the charges were dropped for the members of the 118 involved in the incident, LAFD pilot Thomas Kinard's charges should have been included."
At that, Buck moves to stand menacingly at her shoulder like an attack dog, although the colonel doesn't look all that impressed at the display. If anything, he gets a look on his face like he'd just swallowed an assassin bug. Specifically a North American wheel bug.Â
"Normally, I would agree with you, but Thomas Kinard abused his military rank and previous clearance to gain access to a secure government building, steal proprietary assets from a lab that could have caused great harm to the population of Los Angeles, and physically assaulted personnel on his way out," Colonel Spade snaps at her. "There was no way we were letting any of that go."
"Assaulted?" Athena lifts a brow.Â
"That's awful," Buck rasps, pressing his thighs together. "Like, how many people and what did he do to them? Like, were there concussions? Broken bones? You can go into detail, I'm not squeamish."
The thought of Tommy fighting his way to get to Buck is so disgustingly hot that he might pop a woody in front of Athena, their lawyer lady, a visibly upset military man, and three thousand ducks. Still not the worst place he's ever been turned on.
"Without Kinard, we never would've gotten the antidote in time to save all those people," Athena says, and yanks her chair forward a little, away from Buck. "The people you deemed collateral damage in the fallout of the release of the CCHF virus."
"No one could have predicted Dr. Blake would go rogue," Colonel Spade says easily, with hate in his eyes. "This is hardly the fault of theâ"
Suddenly, Bernadette sits up, and it feels like someone's put a spotlight on her. Buck kind of expects her to break into song or something, but what happens is actually so much better.
"The day Dr. Blake stole the virus, her employment was terminated, effective immediately, and yet security didn't walk her out of the building, which goes against all federal mandated safety protocols," Bernadette says, all smiles, practically glowing. "The labâproperty of the U.S. government, if I remember correctlyâwas entirely unsupervised, which gave Dr. Blake the unfettered opportunity to tamper with the virus, speeding up its incubation period without authorization. Or, perhaps she did have authorization and the government failed to disclose this. Tell me, what else is going on under our noses that the government isn't telling us?"
"Try to disappear the brave people who risk their lives to do the right thing, apparently," Athena answers pointedly.Â
"I thought you were a union lawyer," Colonel Spade says through a visibly clenched jaw. "What do you know about federal pharmaceutical law?"
Bernadette's smile goes sharp. "I dabble."
Colonel Spade looks, for lack of a better word, murderous. He's probably one smarmy comment from grabbing the nearest rubber duck and bludgeoning Bernadette to death with it.
But Buck has never been able to help himself. "Is this a bad time to mention my ex-girlfriend is an investigative reporter?"
Athena drops her head into her hand. "Buck."
"I'm just saying!" He crosses his arms, trying to puff himself up the way some animals do when they're faced with a predator. "It sure would be a shame if an anonymous tip about all this landed in her lap."
Colonel Spade squints at him. "Are you threatening me, Firefighter Buckley?"
"You're trying to bury Tommy to save your own ass," Buck growls. "Yes, I'm threatening you."
Wordlessly, Bernadette reaches into her briefcase, which looks like it's seriously ready to bust open at the seams, and slides over a packet of paper to Colonel Spade. The colonel snatches it up and starts reading, and the longer he does, the paler he gets.
Finally, he lowers the packet and stabs Bernadette with his eyes. "Where did you get this?"
"I play mahjong with your ex-wife every Sunday," Bernadette says, like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. "She sends her regards. Well, she actually sent the tip of her blackmail iceberg. How is your new wife, by the way? She graduate from college yet?"
Eyes wide, Buck looks at the colonel, who's got the swallowing wheel bugs look on his face again.
After the most awkward ten seconds that Buck's had to endure since Eddie crashed his and Tommy's pizza date, the colonel folds like a bad row of mahjong tiles.
"Fine," he says with a sigh, then glares at Bernadette. "And no, she's a junior."
Buck picks up a rubber duck with sharp teeth like a vampire. "Gross."
+
The colonel washes his hands of them by pushing them onto two enormous guards named Weekes and Kluger, who are basically human trees.Â
When Kluger gets his orders to take them to cell 58, he droops like a wilting plant. "Hey, you're not here to, like, take Kinard to Gitmo, right? It's justâhe's really cool. He's got the wildest stories."
"Dude figured out what was wrong with my car just from listening to a video on my phone." Weekes grins, then leans in to whisper conspiratorially to Buck, "it was the alternator."
"I offered to introduce him to my sister," Kluger says as they board the elevator, and he's either oblivious to Buck's glare searing a hole in his head or is just flat-out ignoring it, because he continues blithely, "but he said he doesn't like girls. Which is cool. I'm down with the rainbow, you know? So I told him about my cousin, Martin."
Buck makes a politely interested noise, but it mostly sounds like he's biting straight through his tongue. Athena elbows him hard enough to bruise his spleen.
"And what did he have to say about Martin?" Buck asks. Meanwhile, every bone in his body is vibrating at a frequency only dogs can hear.
Kluger doesn't seem to be aware that the head is going to burst into flames any second now. "He said he was flattered and that Martin was hot, but he's already got his heart pinned on someone on the outside."
Buck relaxes with a pleased smile.
"Yeah, except whoever it is left him in here to rot," Weekes adds.
"T-That's unnecessary and completely untrue," Buck lies, trying to sink into the floor so he won't drown in shame right in front of them.Â
Thankfully, the elevator comes to a stop at the 5th floor, and Buck pushes his way out to gulp some fresh air.Â
He's not sure if being on the 5th floor is a good or bad thing. Tommy was charged with domestic terrorism; what if this is the domestic terrorism floor? What if he's neighbors with neo-nazis? What if he'd been jumped by a faction in the shower and took a beating and has spent the last few days pissing blood and breathing through broken ribs and cursing the day he ever picked up Chimney's call about needing a pilot for an unauthorized rescue?Â
What if he regrets ever meeting Buck?
But before Buck can ask Kluger for a bucket to throw up in, they come to a stop in front of a cell marked with the number 58, and Buck forces himself to look inside.
Apparently the question Buck should've been asking was what if Tommy's lying on his bed playing paddle ball while he mouths along to whatever 80s hip-hop song is playing on a little radio? Because that's exactly what Tommy's doing.
"I gave him the radio," Weekes says proudly, reaching out to knock on the glass door. Tommy looks up without pausing his game. The ball keeps thwacking against the wood.
"He's so good at that," Kluger says, starry-eyed. "He beat Officer Amino last week and that guy's won tournaments."
"Is it Girl Scout cookie season already?" Tommy asks cheerfully, then effortlessly twists the paddle so the cord wraps around it. He tucks the ball in. "Sorry, I don't have my wallet on me."
Buck shoves Kluger aside to practically press his nose to the glass. "We take IOUs."
As soon as he sees Buck, Tommy brightens, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He stands, stretching with a groan, and then walks over to the door. Even in the bland blue jumpsuit, he's stupid hot. Helplessly, Buck puts his palm against the glass.
"Nice of you to stop by," Tommy says with a teasing lilt, pressing his own palm to Buck's, and Buck swears he can feel the heat of it through the pane.Â
"I was in the neighborhood," Buck teases back. "Figured I'd pop in."
"I won't lie, I've been dreaming about you showing up for a conjugal visit." Tommy looks away from Buck's face to squint at everyone else. "Although you guys weren't there."
At that, Athena cracks a smile and says in an odd voice, almost twangy, "You stupid mullet head, he beat you with nothin'."
Tommy perks up and doesn't miss a bit, drawling, "Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand."
Before Buck can ask what the hell they're talking about, someone shoves him aside with surprising strength. He's a little surprised to see it's Bernadette, who he kind of forgot about, but she's clearly the only one who remembers why they're here because she raps on the glass and says, "Mr. Kinard, my name is Bernadette Kaine and I'm here to take you home."
"We're here to take you home," Buck amends.Â
Tommy looks at Bernadette for a long moment, head tilting like a puppy hearing a noise for the first time and gaze narrowed, and then snaps his fingers. "Hey, I know you! I sent my paperwork to you the last time I stole a helicopter."
Sighing, Bernadette nods. "If you do it a third time, I get a free sundae."
"What do I get?" Tommy asks.
"Permanent incarceration and possibly the death penalty."
Pursing his lips thoughtfully, Tommy mulls that one over, then gives a decisive nod. "Sounds about right."
+
The helicopter ride home is spent mostly with Buck plastered to Tommy's side while he fills him in on everything he missed. Tommy's devastated to hear about Bobby. He offers Athena his condolences over the open mic, then curls his hand around his headset speaker to murmur apologies into Buck's ear.Â
"I wish I'd been there for you," Tommy says, and the words ease some kinked cable inside Buck he hadn't known was there. "I'm sorry I wasn't."
"I'm sorry I forgot there were consequences to your actions and left you to the mercy of the Army," Buck says, pressing his forehead to the jut of Tommy's jaw. "I just assumed everything was taken care of, and I⊠kind of thought you were ghosting me."
At that, Tommy snorts, wrapping an arm around Buck to hold him impossibly closer. "Evan, come on. You don't kiss a man like that and quote Humphrey Bogart and then ghost him. I'm an asshole and a coward, but I'm not a monster."
Buck winces. "Uh, yeah, when you have a second, can I see your phone?"
"What for?"
"It's better if you don't know," Buck says. "Completely unrelated, but you don't have a code for your voicemail, do you, and if so, can I have it?"
Tommy snickers and presses a kiss to Buck's temple. "How bad did it get?"
"Well, I taught Chim the word 'motherfuckface', so you tell me," Buck admits, cracking a grin when Tommy laughs out loud, but he has a hell of a time trying to keep it up. Finally, he gives up the ghost and tucks his face against Tommy's, eyes prickling hot with guilt. "I'm so sorry. I should've known. I should've known. Never in a million years would you have bailed on the funeral. It should've been my first clue that something was wrong."
Tommy snugs him in close and says quietly, barely audible over the rotors, "To quote an incredible man who drives me up the wall: 'it seems there's a lot we don't know about each other.' I'm glad you know I wouldn't have left you in the lurch like that, but there's a lot more⊠there's a lot more about me that you should know. That I⊠well, not exactly want you to know, but that I will tell you. Willingly. Well, not exactly willingly, butâ"
"Y-Yeah?" Sniffling a little, Buck pulls away just enough to be able to look up at him. "What are you doing Saturday?"
It wins him a smile. "Vivisecting myself for you, apparently. And maybe burgers afterwards?"
Grinning, Buck snuggles shamelessly back in. "Actually, I wanted to make Bobby's famous lasagna for you. I think I've finally nailed it down. Then you can nail me down."
But before Tommy can respond, Athena breaks in over the line and takes a baseball bat to the moment. "Change the subject. Now."
Swallowing hard, Buck nods and pastes on a smile that doesn't scream 'I'm chubbed up a little in my jeans and I'm trying not to make it everyone's problem.' He coughs a little. "So, uh, who's Humphrey Bogart? Does he have a podcast or something?"
Tommy turns to Athena. "Actually, thanks, but no thanks. Take me back to prison."

Something Like Sin

Older!Farmhand! Abby x perv!farmers daughter R
CONTAINS: rough draft for a fic idea I had. MDNI. Religious guilt, impure thoughts, short.
She does it on purpose. You swear she does.
The lift of her shirt to swipe sweat from her forehead. Being sure youâre in her line of sight while she works. The small touches when passing by.
How could one woman weaken your resolve so much?
How, after a long day of doing nothing but giving your wet dreams more fuel, could she step into the main house and âreport backâ?
Listing everything she took care ofâ
That wobbly fence your belt loop always seemed to catch on. The left tire on your daddyâs truck that made that god-awful squeak when started in the early morning.
Everything but the small flicker of amusement sheâd get when she caught your stareâor even just felt it.
The grumbling of your fatherâs âSounds good, thanks again, Abbigail,â seeming more frequent than before.
Didnât she fix that fence last week?
The only relief was writing it out.
The dark green journal that stayed tucked in the back pocket of worn jeans. Pages of thoughts, frustrations, fantasies.
And hidden in the back pagesâ Not passwords to the Wi-Fi, or the lockboxâ Your feelings. The real ones. About her. Starting innocently from last summer, when she filled in for her father.
Jerry did honest work. Only lived a few roads downâhe was the first person you called when things went belly-up. But heâs older now. Knees donât work as well. So naturally, she came.
Quiet. Worked quickly. Efficient. Good hands are always welcome on the hundreds of acres your family owned.
Months of torture.
Farmhands came and wentâbut not her. SheâAbbigailâalways came back.
In your dreams.
And in the back pages of that journal.
June 5th, 2025
âShe said she liked the top I was wearing last night. The one I swore Iâd never wear again because of how tight it felt across my chest. But her eyesâthey lingered. Just for a second. Long enough to make me feel bare. I didnât sleep after that.â
God, you prayed she never read that one. But what was a girl like you calling on Him for? Impurities like that didnât deserve His protection.
Sinners only thrive when hidden in the comfort of shadows.
When the sun greets the sky, the mask takes its placeâ In the form of the farmerâs daughter.
She made supper every evening, brought water to those helping hands, leaned into her daddyâs kisses on the forehead.
So busy being the golden girl, youâso wornâyou didnât notice that your back pocket was empty as you entered the house. Sleeping peacefully in your mattress. Farm dog Gracie barking occasionally when cars passed in the distance.
All while the green spine cracked openâ
By fingers that didnât hold the pen that stained the pages. With an ease, nothing rushedâlike it had been done millions of times.
The pages flipped until their heartâs content.
Those same eyes watched you the next morning, messy hair falling as you lifted from your bed. In full view of the bay window warming the room.
The new day dances around you. Smiles and âyouâre welcomeâs, as usual. Until a voice sent panic striking through you like lightning.
âNot doodling in those pages of yours this morninâ?â your father said as you reached the bottom of the stairs, still slightly sleep-ridden.
No caffeine could wake someone faster. Your hand flew to your pockets. Eyes widening as the words stuck in your throat.
Where is it? Why didnât I double-check last night? Did someone else find it? Your mind raced.
âOh sweetheart, relaxâyou probably left it in your room,â your mother called out from the kitchen
Before they could say another word, the screen door flew open. Your boots crunched the gravel, bolting for the barn. Youâd been there last night, writing to your heartâs content. Dreams of the future. Leaving the fields behind one day. Sending postcards to Momma with different cities attached.
But those werenât the ones you were worried about.
A heaving chest and shaky fingers reached for the rusted latch. Greeted by moos, and Gracie sleeping near the ladder. Eyes searched the wooden floors, hands and knees warming as you looked.
And looked.
Where the hell is it? The furrow in your eyebrow deepened as did the pit in your stomach.
âYou alright?â a voice called out a few feet away.
Your body jerked, a small gasp leaving you. Not expecting anyone else to be here. So early anyhow. Slowly lifting your head, trailing up the woman who almost seemed to have appeared.
Heavy boots, dark-washed jeans. That thick brown belt, silver buckle. A white beater lifted just enough to see that blonde happy trail that made your thighs squeeze together.
âJesus, you scared meâyeah, Iâm alright.â
You glanced to the woman with a quirked eyebrow at your position. Realizing how ridiculous you mustâve looked, you pushed to your feet. Hands dusting off your knees.
âGood morning, Ms. Anderson.â You stood slightly awkwardly, with a small head nod.
âI always tell you that just Abby is fine.â She smiled. âBut good morninââ The silence stretched out. Abby cleared her throat and spoke once more. âWhat are you looking for⊠in here?â
âNothing, I just⊠thought I lost something in here. And now that Iâve checked⊠Iâll be on my way.â You gave a small smile, shifting to turn on your heels. Unable to hold that eye contact any longer.
âYou sure?â âBecause I found thisââ short fingers grazed something as she turned, reaching behind her. âon the floor.â
There it was. Thank God. Maybe He was listening.
âOh! Thank youâlittle squirrel brain of mine sometimes.â A joke you forced out.
She huffed at the attempt and hummed âDonât mention it.â
Your fingers brushed as you went to take it from her. Your heart rammed against your ribs. Pausing when she lifted it again slightly like sheâd changed her mind. Eyes flickered to her face, meeting hers. Your hand now left with nothing as she teased it backwards. Only you heard her sayâ
âThe way she movesâlike she knows time will wait for her.â You froze. Your breath caught. Abby only tilted her head âThatâs pretty, yâknow? Like poetry.â
Oh, how sweet, you thought. Yet, Your heart pounded louder. How far did she read?
âThank youâŠItâs nothing really. Just something I do when Iâm bored.â You barely managed the words. They sounded distant, hollow in your mouthâlike they belonged to someone else. Your hand closed around the journal like a secret you couldnât bury fast enough. And then you turned. Quick. Too quick. Boots scraping against the barn floor. already vowing to be more careful next time.
That was a close one. Just leave, get this book of sin from her. Wanting to throw lighter fluid on it even. However, before you could make your escape she continued, the words burning in the lightâ
âHer eyes lingered. Just for a second. Long enough to make me feel bare.â Then with a small chuckle âThatâs the line, ainât it?â
Her silky voice cut through the air behind you, amusement wrapped around every word. You stopped cold. Turned slowly. âDidnât sleep after that, huh?â
âWhatâwhat did youââ you stammered. âOh lordâIâm so sorry, I didnât mean for you to readââ
She cut you off with a soft laugh, stepping closer. âItâs alright, reallyâ
âThatâs a filthy little thought for a girl who says good morning like a church bell.â Her eyes flicked to the journal still clutched in your guilty hands.
âWhat else keeps you up at night, sweetheart?â

Are souls in the context of fairy island the same as the souls Wortox uses? He describes himself as a fae sometimes. (Sorry if you donât have any answers for this. I know not everyone knows a lot about him)
that's a great question!! i would think yes and no. yes because they function the same way (as a food source for a magical creature), but no because of the method in which the fairies consume them.
i'd imagine that if they were the same, which would make sense, there would be sort of like a tier thing going on in terms of food grade, with Wortox's souls being what a morsel is to a big meat.
also worth noting, Wortox can only really take souls after he's killed something, which is when a soul would leave its corporeal shell. fairies, however, can remove souls from their bodies even if the victim is still alive - which is what causes the soulless state to be possible. so there's also a difference there.
for all intents and purposes they are the same, one is just colored red and the other blue. mostly for aesthetics. or you could go a step further and say that the method in which you take a soul determines its color! red for bloodshed, blue for deceit. either way, i'll leave that up to interpretation!

for the ask game: bright âšïž
HEY GHOST!!!! nice to see you haunting the lockbox! :D
from part 3 of âPutting the Puzzle Pieces Back Togetherâ:
âMy powers feel⊠unnatural.â
That was the root of it all: lightning, a force of nature, was not meant to be controlled, to be forced into a precise needle. To do such a thing defied the very nature of lightning, and went against everything that it represented: unlimited, wild, bright freedom. To do such a thing was an insult to the lightning itself.
Jay finally looked the Director in the eyes.

Elriel, Azriel x Archeron!Reader
Alternate Endings: Gone | betty | The Prophecy
mini-series masterlist | ACOTAR x reader masterlist
Story Summary: All you had ever wanted to be was plain. And now, as a plain-faced High Fae, you want more. You want your mate.
Warnings: mentions of self-harm, self-loathing, suicide
Words: ~2.6k
Author's Note: I'm sorry. (I told you guys I've been having a rough week...) Apparently my brain is saying 'fuck Kinktober!' Even tho like. I WANT to write those... smut just doesn't feel in the cards for me today đ© so have some tasty tasty angst instead. (I'm also watching an Eras Tour live so I'm hella cheered up now lol)
18+ only pls
đ€đđ©·đđ€
Self loathing grew in your gut as you watched your family around you.
All of them were happy, reveling in the togetherness that they shared.
And your mate- your mate- was ignoring you. He was speaking to one of your sisters, absolutely enamored with her. And you couldnât blame him.
Elain had always been the pretty one of the four of you, a shining diamond even in the filth of poverty.
Nesta was the one with regal beauty, her sharp eyes and the way she carried herself not letting anyone think otherwise.
Your twin, Feyre, was stunning, even if she herself had never seen it, the cleverness in her eyes and quiet grace drawing peopleâs gaze to her.
And then there was you.
You were⊠the ugly one. Your mother had said so, even though you were only a child when she passed. Your father had quietly agreed with her. Nesta had mocked your looks when she had had a bad day, which was nearly every day while you had been living in the run down hut after your family lost their fortune. Elain said nothing, but shot pitying looks at you when no suitor asked for a dance while you had still been human, even when it had been a ball thrown in your honor for your birthday. Feyre has been the kindest to you, reminding you that itâs what on the inside that countsâŠ
But that didnât appear to be so.
Even with a mating bond that you knew should draw Azrielâs attention, his eyes were still glued to Elain. He seemed to be able to breathe only when in her presence, taking in the same air as her.
And in your presence? He couldnât seem to get away fast enough.
Being dumped into the Cauldron had made both of your sisters even prettier, and Feyre was no exception either after being turned High Fae.
For you, it had made you plain. No longer ugly, unless you counted the still crooked teeth and too small nose and thin mouth.
Just plain.
As a human, you had begged to whatever higher power there was that you could just be plain.
But now that you were, you knew it would never be enough.
Because while Feyre was right, your personality mattered more in a long term relationship than your looks, being pretty drew people in.
Being plain only made you fade into the background.
Azriel laughed at something Elain had said, the sound sending warmth through your body.
It should be you making him laugh, not Elain.
Elain, with her beauty and poise and perfect personality and her ridiculously handsome mate who wanted nothing but her time.
Elain, who seemed to want no one and no thing but your mate.
Your Azriel.
You tore your gaze away from the couple, who you already knew were in a relationship. Elain had confessed it to you a month ago, gushing about how their fifth date had gone and how she thought he was the one. She had told you first, knowing that you wouldnât tell anyone.
After all, who would you tell?
Itâs not like you had any friends in Velaris- or in the human lands, for that matter- and your other two sisters were so preoccupied with their mates and growing personal circles that they hardly had the time to look at you, let alone talk to you.
No. You were alone. You were a lockbox for all of her secrets.
Including that she was planning to officially reject the mating bond once Azriel offered a proposal of marriage.
That had made you sick to your stomach, but you had hidden it deep, deep down in your heart as you congratulated her and faked happiness, asking her when she thought he would propose.
âAny day now, I suspect. Azriel told me that he was planning for the future, and wanted to know if I would like to be a part of it,â she had sighed dreamily. âWe just need to tell the family, I know that⊠Rhys was worried about what us being together would mean for court relations. But heâs just being dramatic, donât you think?â Her chocolate eyes landed on you, so filled with hope that you couldnât tell her that he was your mate.
âYes, heâs just worried, âLain. Iâm sure everything will be fine,â you managed to say, and relatively normal at that.
That was last night, and while your eyes had drifted to the carpeting, they shot back upwards at the sound of clinking metal on glass.
Your mate, standing with a flute of sparkling wine in his hand and a knife in his other, had his arm locked with Elainâs.
He cleared his throat once he had everyoneâs attention, his eyes passing over everyone-
But you. His eyes skipped over you, even now, with the bond flaring in your chest.
âElain and I have something to announce, though Rhys already knows what it is.â You heard a hand slap against an arm, Rhysâs faked moan of pain, and Nesta scolding her mate. Azriel smiled at their antics, such a rarity on his face that your heart skipped several beats, leaving you lightheaded.
It most certainly wasnât because of what they were announcing.
âElain and I have been dating for the past two months, and we would like to make it official with you all now. In fact, the two of us will be moving into a cottage in town later in the month, and we would like to invite you all to join us for a housewarming party in two weeks.â
The inner circle broke into cheers around you, Cassian immediately encasing his brother in his arms and clapping him on the back.
âCongratulations, brother! I know youâve waited a long time to find love.â
You remained seated where you were, offering a smile to the happy couple but staying put.
If you stood, you were sure to faint. Or be sick. Or both.
Nesta was the only other person who remained where they were, a skeptical look on her face.
âI hate to be the person to bring the party downâŠâ She started, her voice weary. âBut what of your mates? Havenât you wanted one for your whole life, Azriel? What will happen when you find her?â
âIf I find her, I will reject the bond, Nesta. My love for Elain eclipses that of what I thought possible, even with a mating bond. Nothing and no one will ever compare to your sister,â Azriel answered, which seemed to be enough to have Nestaâs approval, as she stood and made her way to the couple.
âThen Iâm happy for the both of you. But if you ever hurt my sister, you will deal with me,â Nesta warned, ice in her tone.
You didnât stick around to hear what came next.
Nothing and no one will ever compare to your sister.
And of course, he was right. How could you compare to Elain?
She was beautiful, yes, but she was also a perfect match for Azriel. Kind and caring, always ready to help people, not to mention she would be a wonderful mother.
And then there was you. Plain. Boring. Nothing special.
Even the Cauldron hadnât thought anything of you, leaving you with a High Fae body but no magic to speak of.
You couldnât even fathom why you had been made Azrielâs mate when Elain was such a wonderful pairing to him, and had the magical abilities to match.
You stumbled your way to the town house, where you had taken up residence once Feyre and Rhys had finished the river house. Once inside you quickly made it to your room and shucked off your clothes after locking the door.
Bare, you stood before the mirror and assessed yourself. It was a habit you had picked up once your family had regained their fortune after Feyre had been stolen away.
One that brought you no comfort, but you needed to do.
Your physique was fine, you had filled out in the past year of being fae.
But there was nothing⊠special about you. You were medium height. Your chest was a bit smaller than average. Your legs were on the shorter side, making your torso look too long.
And your legs⊠they were covered in small white scars.
Another habit that you had picked up, this time after turning fae.
And tonight would be no different.
You suppose the one saving grace of being turned fae was your quick healing, letting you destroy your body without anyone knowing.
And no one ever would, seeing as your mate was on his way to being married to your sister.
A sigh left your lips as you turned to your bed, fishing the small blade you kept underneath out from below the mattress.
Tonight would be no different.
Except now you knew that even if you confessed your bond to Azriel, your heart would be torn to shreds no matter what.
đ€đđ©·đđ€
It was two months later, during Starfall, that your world crumbled further.
You had donned a plain dress in a midnight blue, with long flowing sleeves and reaching your feet. You had opted for flats, seeing as no one would pay you enough attention to notice if you were in heels or not.
No, no one would notice you at all.
Because Azriel had a ring in his pocket.
One that you had given him advice on, to choose something Elain would love.
A glutton for punishment, thatâs what you were as you gazed at the beautiful couple, clad in matching blue outfits and beaming at one another.
You had attempted to stay home that night, only for Azriel himself to personally fly you up to the House of Wind, insisting that you needed to be there for Starfall.
You knew he meant their engagement, though.
He hadnât even glanced your way once last Starfall, so you knew it wasnât that you would be missed by him.
Still, you stood on one of the balconies, watching them. Waiting for the moment that your life would be forever altered, never to have a great love.
Because truly, your one chance at a great love was a mating bond. You knew that no one would choose you to spend their life with, not when you were so plain and boring with nothing to draw people in, to get to know you.
They were dancing together, so wrapped up in each other that it was painful to watch.
And then your feet were moving, leading you straight to them. You met them right as the song finished, the two of them just inches apart.
It stung.
âAzriel, may I speak to you for a moment?â You asked without realizing the words had left your mouth. âAlone, please? It will just be a moment, I promise.â
You cringed at yourself.
What were you doing?
Azriel glanced down at Elain, who nodded with a smile. âOf course. Iâll be right back, sweetheart,â he said softly, placing a gentle kiss to Elainâs lips before following you back into the House, away from the commotion.
âWhatâs this about, Y/N?â Azriel asked in a clipped tone once you were alone, anxiously glancing back to where you had left Elain.
âIâŠâ You hesitated, the words catching in your throat. Are you really going to tell him?
âWell?â He asked impatiently, his shadows swirling around him.
âI⊠Iâm your mate,â you said, the words rushing out all at once, and your tore your eyes away from his face and to the floor.
âYouâre⊠Youâre joking, right?â Azriel asked incredulously.
A dagger of ice to the heart, crafted of your own yearning and longing for him, for your mate.
âNo, I⊠Itâs true, Azriel. I am your mate.â Your eyes flicked back up to his face after you said it again, but you wished you hadnât.
Anything would be better than seeing the horror in his eyes, the disgust twisting his features.
The dagger, forced in further by a hand smacking the hilt.
âYou?â Azriel laughed. âWhy would the Cauldron make you my mate?â
Twisting, bleeding, shredding your soul apart even as you felt the bond flare to life on his end, the very slightest stumble as he regarded you.
âI⊠I donât knowâŠâ You whispered, barely audible.
âYouâre not my mate,â Azriel said, stepping away from you. âYou were never going to be my mate. Youâre a fine enough person, sure, but how could you compare to Elain?â He shook his head, snickering to himself. âI suppose these five hundred years of waiting were for nothing. Iâll tell Cassian or Rhys take you back to the town house. JustâŠâ He sighed. âDonât take it personally. Itâs not you, itâs me, hmm?â
And with that, the bond between the two of you was shredded, a wounded cry leaving your lips as you sank to the ground, clutching your chest where it used to reside, glowing brightly and giving you a reason to go on.
âI think itâs best for you to stay away from Elain and I. I wouldnât want you getting territorial and ripping my loveâs throat out of anything. Goodbye, Y/N.â
You barely heard him walk away, so overwhelmed with pain.
Why me?
Why was I his mate?
Why didnât I just drown in the Cauldron?
With a great deal of trying, you managed to hoist yourself back onto your feet, stumbling your way to one of the unoccupied balconies, still clutching your chest.
Your gaping, empty chest.
Because Azriel still had your heart. He had shredded it, mangled it beyond believe but it still resided with him, leaving you with nothing but a hole where it used to be.
Your legs crashed into the edge of the balcony, your hands flying to the stone to steady you.
But it didnât help, everything was still spinning, blood rushing in your ears as your heart kept beating somehow, somehow still physically intact even as you felt it was being ripped from your chest over and over and over.
You couldnât breathe.
You couldnât live.
The very fact that Elain was so casual, so blasé about shredding a bond to bits had you questioning everything you thought you knew about your sister.
How could she condemn someone to this existence?
Because already, you werenât living.
This couldnât be living.
It couldnât be.
You risked a peak over the edge, spying the sharp, jagged rocks below.
If you werenât living nowâŠ
Before you could second guess your choice, you lifted yourself onto the balcony, letting your legs dangle for a moment.
Then you swung them over the stone, to the side that had nothing to catch you.
Well, nothing but the cold embrace of death.
Which at this point would be a welcome reprieve from the fiery hot grief flooding through you, grief at the bond that was never given a chance, a moment to be considered.
But perhaps that was all the consideration you needed. To know that you would only have been a burden of mate to the male you had fallen for.
You took one last, jagged breath into your lungs before you slid off the smooth stone, air rushing past you and-
This must be what it feels like to fly.

Everlasting Trio DP x DC Nobody Knows AU Part 9
Part 8
âNothing? At all?â
âNothing, Red,â Barbara's voice repeats through the speakers of the Batcomputer, sounding irritated at this point.
âBut- I mean, did you try-â
âShe's going to come to the cave and shove a Batarang up your ass if you ask her one more time whether she missed something, Replacement,â Jason drawls off to the side. He's reclining in a chair, feet kicked up on a weapons table.
Tim groans. âI know, I know. I'm sorry.â
He's back in the Cave, and so is pretty much everyone else. Turns out he'd caused something of a panic, and it was all hands on deck for a hot second.
When the engineer had density shifted out of his grasp and heckled him from some nebulous spot midair, it had taken only a few seconds afterwards for Timâs comms to explode with noise.
Turns out nobody had been able to hear anything from him except a constant low static from shortly before the encounter until after it ended, and his mask camera was borked the whole time too.
Understandably, there was some alarm about that. Bruce had ordered everyone back to the cave for a full explanation and conversation on what the hell happened.
âSit down and tell us what happened, baby bird. You're gonna wear a hole in the floor at this rate,â Dick tells him, a gentle hand on his shoulder nudging him towards a seat.
Tim groans and throws himself into it like a puppet with his strings cut.
âWell he's definitely a meta,â he grumbles. âI never actually laid eyes on him. Wouldn't have even known he was there if he hadn't gotten ghost busted.â
âGhost busted?â Jason asks, eyebrows raised. Tim huffs out a reluctant laugh, because in retrospect that part was pretty funny.
âHis fucking phone went off. All of a sudden the empty air next to me was blasting the Ghostbusters theme song and an invisible man was swearing like a sailor until it cut out.â
Stephanie blows a raspberry in the start of a laughing fit, and suddenly the whole cave is echoing with mirth. It lifts Tim's spirits a little, makes him laugh too.
He means, come on. That has to be the new record for the funniest botched stealth mission, a position previously held by Damian when a stray dog outed him because it smelled the treats he keeps in his utility belt.
The shade of red the demon brat's face was when he had to explain why the mission went sideways was fucking glorious.
âSo you've confirmed that we're dealing with a male meta?â
Speaking of the brat.
âSounded male, and he at least has invisibility and density shifting,â Tim confirms.
âDensity shifting?â Bruce prompts.
âYeah. After the phone went off I couldn't see him but I was trying to figure out where he was. Then the lockbox disappeared too - he can transfer the invisibility through touch, apparently.â
âHuh. Haven't seen that before,â Duke comments.
âMe neither. But I made an educated guess at where I thought he was and grabbed his arm. Had a damn good grip, and then he justâŠwent through me. Like I literally felt something pass through my hand all cold and tingly and suddenly I wasn't holding anything anymore.â
Jason snorts. âBet that was a kick in the nuts, huh.â
âCome on, Little Wing,â Dick scolds half heartedly. âBe nice.â
Jason rolls his eyes.
âYou said âat leastâ,â Bruce says, brow furrowed. âYou suspect he has other powers too?â
Tim purses his lips. âI can't be sure, considering I couldn't see him, butâŠI think he probably has flight too.â
âFlight?â Dick says, furrowing his brow. He crosses his arms and shakes his head, looking both thoughtful and troubled. âNo, that's not possible.â
Tim blinks. âWhat? Why not?â
Dick âBe Nice, Little Wingâ Grayson looks him dead in the eyes and says, âBecause according to all known laws of aviation-â
âYou-!â
The cave is filled with laughter again, Jason throwing his head back and cackling in a way that's particularly irksome. Tim reaches over and shoves at his boots while he's tipping his chair back and sends him toppling to the floor.
Jason flails and fails to save himself, rolling back to his feet and spitting curses with a hint of green to his eyes. Tim freezes at the sight of it.
It's not that he's scared. He and Jason have come a long way, and everyone knows by now what amount of green is actually dangerous. Jason's nowhere near actually losing it right now, he's just annoyed.
What makes Tim freeze is-
âHe's been exposed to the Pits.â
Everyone pauses, confused. Jason blinks at him. âUhâŠyeah, fucking duh?â
âNo,â Tim shakes his head. âNo, not you. The Engineer.â
Suddenly there's no laughter anymore. Everyone has gone tense and alarmed.
âTim?â Bruce prompts lowly.
âI did see part of him,â Tim murmurs lowly, realizing it himself for the first time. âWhen I grabbed him, there were two bright lights for a second or two before they faded. God, I should have realized- it was his eyes. Like Christmas lights, bright Lazarus green."

Will you wait me out?

Summary: You were once the best of friendsâmaybe a little bit moreâand maybe, if life hadnât gotten in the way, things could be different now, but instead, a decade after you once knew Noah, you see his face again and find yourself chasing ghosts in the form of old memories, before finally coming face to face with the past.
Part 2 here
Pairing: Noah Sebastian x reader.
CW: none really, a little bit sad a lot of pining by reader, implied old feelings, old friends, potentially high school sweethearts, lots of âwhat ifsâ.
The first time you see his face again, itâs like seeing a ghost. He looks older nowâhis features sharperâand though his hair is much shorter than the overgrown wolf cut you remember, even in grayscale, you recognize those doe-like brown eyes.
His face sits front and center in a group shot on the cover of a magazineâa rock magazine highlighting Bad Omens as Best International Artist. Something inside you swells and flutters. Pride, you think. You always believed he would go far with his words, envied his ability to lay them out so eloquently, weaving them into songs.
Maybe if you had, too, he wouldnât feel like a footnote in the story of your life. The bond you shared, that special something youâd been too scared to name back thenâloveâcould have come to fruition.
The magazine sits on your coffee table for a weekâunopened, but face-upâso you can glance down at him and the rest of the guys. You didnât stick around in Virginia long enough to meet Jolly, but youâd briefly crossed paths with Folio and managed to forge something of a friendship with NicholasâNoahâs best friend.
It takes you another week before you finally open the magazine with the intention of reading itâat least the article. Most of itâs about the music, the new album, the trajectory of it all. Then your eyes glaze over the part of the interview that touches on the recent popularity of their song Just Pretend on TikTok. He doesnât have to name you outright for you to know what influenced it, how the lyrics were written about you. He never had to explicitly say, because you always knew.
You never really ventured into the bandâs discography. You followed subtly, heard their name crop up here and there, but it seems theyâve recently broken new groundâthough it doesnât surprise you. Nick and Noah had always been talented, and with the addition of Jolly and Folio, you can only imagine what theyâve achieved.
When you finally take the plunge, diving into their music from the start, you find yourself struggling through parts. There are too many similarities about you and him hidden in the subtext of the lyrics. You make it through, even as it tears at your heart, dredging up memories youâd long since tucked awayâkept safe in a lockbox deep inside you.
Three weeks pass, and you find yourself buying three more copies of the magazine: one you saw on display in a coffee shop, one from a convenience store, and one from a Hot Topic windowâthough that one took a bit of bartering.
In double that time, the number increases to nearly quadruple. At this point, youâre probably the sole owner of almost every copy in the city. Youâre not sure when or why the collection began, but now it follows you from place to place, and in every new location you reach, you pick up another. You read them just as often, tooâyour first copy as beaten and battered as you feel every time you dare to torture yourself by re-reading the same passages of the interview you know will tear your heart to shreds.
This wasnât how it was meant to go for the two of youâhim writing songs about your what ifs, and you learning everything you can through the tiniest pieces of his soul he bares in his music and interviews.
The thought of it breaks your heart all over again.
Less than a month later, youâre in a new town. As you pick out a postcard for your family back home, you find yourself choosing anotherâfor him. You donât know what prompts you, exactly. Maybe itâs the fact that heâs been on your mind a lot more lately.
You send it to the bandâs P.O. box. Itâs the only form of contact you have left, after being laughed at by a stranger on the other end of the phone. You had called the number listed on the bandâs record label website, hopeful that maybeâjust maybeâyouâd get to speak to him. The woman who answered wasnât apologetic. In fact, she seemed amused, as though you were just another eagle-eyed fan chasing a long shot. Maybe things wouldâve gone differently if she had known who you are to him⊠who you were.
Your message is simpleâa response to his lyrics:
Iâm still out here. Iâll wait you out. â x
You consider adding more, but decide against it. Thereâs always next time. If there is a next time.
There isâmultiple, in fact. Every new place you go, you find a postcard just for him. Your messages are short, pointed. You mention the things youâve been doingâthe ones you once promised youâd do together someday. You tell him where you are, even though it doesnât matter. By the time he gets it, youâll already be somewhere else.
Do you remember when I told you my biggest fear was roller coasters too, and that one day weâd conquer that fear together? We werenât together, but I wentâfor you. For us. I threw up afterward, and all I could think about was how youâd be fretting over me for at least an hour. I always think about things like that. Your caring heart. I miss it. I miss you. â x
I went ice skating at the Rockefeller Center. I remember you once told me youâd never been, that you couldnât skate. I promised Iâd take you. There were a couple of kids there who looked like they were in love. They held onto each other as they skated. They made me think of you. They made me think of us. â x
I never told you, but I always knew youâd go far with your music. Iâm proud of you. â x
I thought I saw you today. I followed the guy for about ten blocks before I realised it wasnât you. In fact, he looked nothing like you. I see you a lot latelyâin the faces I pass. â x
I think of you a lot. I only hope you still think of me too. â x
Itâs confirmed: Chicago does have the best pizza. They also have the best hospital vending machine selection. (Only one night in A&E) â x
My family still asks about you sometimes. They remember youâcall you my âfunny friendâ because you always made them laugh. It hurts to hear them call you my friend. You were always so much more than that. Iâm sorry I was too late to realise it. â x
Even now, his face continues to haunt you. His ghost follows you, lingering in the memories youâre making aloneâthe ones born from promises you once made together. You carry him with you still. The nine magazine copies have doubled. Magazines, CDs, even a Japan-exclusive edition you found tucked away on the back shelf of a Goodwill.
You convince yourself to go to a concert. Itâs not a large venueâone of their smaller shows. Youâre in town, not by coincidence, so why not? You stay out of sight, near the back of the crowd, and youâre thankful you thought ahead, because when he starts singing the opening lyrics of Just Pretend, you feel your composure slipping.
You donât make it through the whole thing.
You slip away before he has the chance to see you, bumping into someone on your way out. For a brief moment, you freezeâpanicked, apologeticâuntil you lift your gaze and find yourself staring into a familiar face.
Youâd almost forgotten the possibility of Davisâthe second person Noah has known as long as Nick. You catch the flicker of recognition in his eyes and move quickly to slip past, but then you hear him calling your name.
You donât respond. You donât look back. You just leave and hope to God he doesnât realise heâs right.
Youâve been checking every date since the bandâs tour schedule was released. Youâve followed nearly every city with the intention of going, of seeing themâof seeing him, but every time, you back out, lose your nerve.
You wonder if maybe itâs best to leave well enough alone. Is there any point in digging up the grave another time?
At the last tour date offering a meet-and-greet opportunity, you swallow your fearâand your pride. If you donât do it now, you never will. You saw him once, though barely. You heard his voice, and it broke something inside you. For so long, you feared never hearing it again, and now, all you want is to hear it again, to see him again. Even if itâs just for one last time, for one real goodbye.
Your hands are sweaty as you wait. Heâs thanked hundreds of people before youâeach calling him their favorite, each naming their favorite songs or quoting their favorite lyrics. The rest of the band mostly go unnoticed, or are appreciated by only a few. That makes your heart ache, especially for Nicholas, who you always knew to be one of Noahâs biggest inspirationsâhis steady, guiding hand.
Each time you dare to glance at Noah, you catch pieces of the performerâs facadeâthe bright smile that feels just a little too forced to be real. You remember his real smile all too well. Even his laugh sounds animated now.
It feels like watching an animal in a zooâa monkey trained to perform. Keep the line moving. Keep everyone happy. Thereâs a flicker of guilt, because maybe youâre part of the circus now, too, but your intentions arenât ill-meant.
Youâre getting closer now. You start counting down the people ahead of you.
10.
Youâre rehearsing what youâll say. Every scenario youâve ever imagined is playing in your head like a movie reelâa script youâve prepared.
7.
But what words could ever cover the span of a decade?
3.
You wonder if itâs too late to back outâif you could slip away unnoticed.
You pass the Nicks first, unsure if either of them really registers you, but youâre too caught up in your thoughts to notice the way Nicholas elbows Folio with a subtle nod in your direction.
Before you can process it, Noah is sitting in front of you. Your mouth goes dry. You choke on the words. An apology? A hello?
Youâre prompted to speak by a young man about their age, wearing a cap and a Lord of the Rings T-shirt, keeping the line moving at a steady paceâthe same line youâre now holding up.
Noah hasnât looked up yet, as if waiting for you to say your name so he can sign, the same way he has with everyone else before you. You wonder if he knows. If he can sense itâs you standing there, and when you finally find your voice, you say the only thing you can think to sayâyour name.
The moment it reaches him, his head lifts in recognition. His eyes widen, as if the sight of you is deceiving, and suddenly, your pounding heart is in your throatâoverwhelmed with a mixture of joy, anticipation, and the distinct urge to throw up.
The only thing Noah says in return is your nameâso soft itâs barely a whisper. As if saying it aloud might wake him from a dream. As if, by naming you, he might lose you all over again.
