“What does he teach?” Rhia asked. Her chin rested lazily in the palm of her hand, swirling the sugary coffee cup around in her hand. She wasn’t much of a coffee fan, but when Brandon suggested it when they’d crossed paths in the halls, she felt intrigued enough to go along. Mildly amused by the brunette’s exasperation, she offered a sympathetic smile to his complaints. She perked up at his question and made a show of leaning in to check his forehead. “Ooh, yeah, you have a bit right-” Rhia brought her pointer finger to the tip of Brandon’s nose to give a small tap. “Here,” she finished with a self-satisfied smirk, leaning back in her chair. “If you’re so bored in class, why are you taking it?” Rhia asked.

“Never sign up for a class with Professor Manziel. He’s a total fuckin’ windbag,” he warned, grimacing deeply. Brandon felt physically exhausted despite having just sat still for the last two hours, his shoulders held in a tense line as he carded both hands through his hair. It had to count as some form of psychological torture to be cooped up in a lecture hall for that long. “Do I have pen smeared all over my forehead? Because I just about faceplanted into my notes a dozen times out of sheer boredom.”

“Business ethics,” he rattled off automatically, flat in tone, clearly not all that enthused or interested in the subject. Brandon rolled his shoulders in a feeble attempt at relaxing, slouching deeper into his seat to stare abysmally at his slowly cooling coffee on the table. It was Rhia’s undivided attention and the playful ‘boop’ to his nose that had him snapping out of it, going temporarily cross-eyed to trace the path of her index finger as she drew away again. “Kicking a man when he’s down,” he drawled, dramatic declaration paired with a wiggle of his nose. “Not cool, Rhia, not cool at all. I’ve had a hard day, y’know? I barely got out of there alive.” A hyperbole to the highest degree, Brandon shook his head, the corner of his mouth quirking in the direction of a smile. “It’s a required course for my major,” he explained. “I could put it off until my senior year, but that seems stupid when I’m already in it. Might as well power through, I guess.”

“Ew,” Rhia mused with a scrunch of her face. “Is it even possible to have ethics in business?” she inquired with a hint of distaste. Brandon’s expression as he processed what she’d done brought a cheeky grin to Rhia’s face, and she gave a teasing eye-roll at his dramatic disapproval. “Oh, don’t be a baby, Brandon. There’s much worse out there than a boring lecture and a pretty girl booping your nose,” Rhia challenged. Her eyes darted to the movement of Brandon’s mouth, and a smirk teased her lips. “Plus, the day’s still got plenty of opportunities, don’t you think?” she mused, allowing the question to linger before offering a small shrug. Her head tilted curiously at Brandon’s explanation, as if suddenly realizing that some people were forced into classes outside of their interests. “Yeah. You’re pretty smart, right? You just gotta power through,” Rhia reassured, though her tone lacked her usual eagerness. “Or,” she began, leaning forward in her chair once again. “You find a better way to spend the time without getting caught.” Rhia ditched class more frequently than was likely necessary, yet she’d always found attendance rules incredibly easy to work around. Even so, it’d be understandable not to pay attention during a boring class, and someone like Brandon could probably still pass the class without sweat. “But maybe you’re too goody two-shoes for that,” she teased.
