4:44 Album Review

Hov arguably delivers his most vulnerable and introspective album in his career. 

     After the release of his last album, Magna Carta... Holy Grail, I could honestly say that I would have been completely content with Jay-Z not releasing another album. What else did Jigga really have to say after all that he’s accomplished in his illustrious career besides his wealth, business ventures, and his family? And Magna Carta... was kind of average to me, and it just seemed that he was just jumping on what was trending at the time in 2013. With this latest effort though, Jay-Z proved me wrong and I��m glad that this album came into existence. The composition of this album ironically transpired during a very personal time in Jay-Z’s marital life as we witnessed events happen between him and his wife, Beyoncé.

     The public first got evidence of the family issues between the Carters when security footage of Beyoncé’s younger sister, Solange, attacking Jay in an elevator following the 2014 Met Gala. After that incident, rumors of infidelity on Jay’s part emerged and it was essentially confirmed by Beyoncé on her 2016 album, Lemonade. Shortly after that release, rumblings surfaced that Jay was going to release a response to Lemonade through new music and fans were curious to hear what he had to say about the issue. Jay approached Chicago-producer, No I.D., about working on music together with No I.D. initially declining because he felt uninspired at the time according to his interview with Rolling Stone. He would later change his mind and accept Jay’s invitation, and they began analyzing various albums to get inspiration like What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, Confessions by Usher, The Blueprint, Illmatic by Nas, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West. 

     Eventually, mysterious “4:44″ posters and banner ads were displayed throughout New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami. On June 7, a one-minute teaser was released during the NBA Finals and it featured actors Mahershala Ali, Lupita Nyong’o and Danny Glover. The end tag of that teaser stated the Jay’s 13th studio album, 4:44, was releasing on June 30, 2017, exclusively on Tidal. A couple of other teasers featuring new songs were posted online subsequently leading up to the the release of the album. The exclusivity of the album initially caused some controversy because after a certain time that passed, people were forced to sign up for Sprint to listen to the album. After one week of being exclusive on Tidal, it was made available on other streaming platforms. 

     This album is undeniably Hov’s best body of work since American Gangster (even though The Blueprint 3 is underrated in my opinion). He discusses an array of topics such as his turbulent relationship with Kanye West, his mother being a lesbian, his view on the current state of hip-hop, the obstacles that African-Americans still face in this country today, his mindset when it comes to business, being a father to his children, his infidelity, etc. It is a side of Jay that I never knew about, and it was refreshing hearing him rap about these topics over the soul-sampling instrumentals that No I.D. brilliantly produced. It was also the first time that Jay worked with solely one producer for a whole album, and it is definitely evident because the overall sound is very cohesive and it gives die-hard Jay-Z fans the old school feel while also providing contemporary fans something to enjoy. At a little over 36 minutes long, this project is straight to the point, and it left no room for filler. Hov was able deliver a “mature” rap album, and it gave us a glimpse into his personal life where he provided some wisdom and displayed his flaws as a human.

     I didn’t know that I needed an album from Jay-Z in 2017 until I heard this one. Should he retire from putting out albums after this? I really don’t know but if he still has more stories to tell and if he’s in the creative space to produce quality content like he did on 4:44, then I would happily embrace an album from the near 50-year-old legend.

It's been almost two weeks since JAY:Z released his 13th studio album, 4:44. Still after it's initial release HOV continues to release videos one week after another that continues to explain the album in the form of video footnotes and music visuals. As I was watching the video, I realized whatJay was doing was like DLC (downloadable content).

DLC is a tactic mainly used by the video game industry to strengthen the shelf life of a game. Instead of putting all the story modes or characters in at the initial release , these companies instead offers new content for separate purchases several weeks after the game has been released. Often the release of the DLC would come just about when a user is finished with the game and the DLC would allow the gamer to play even further.

The lesson to be taken from here is that the consumer can become a reoccurring purchaser or engager when content is strategically stretched upon a period of time. This also gives the product layers and forces the user to spend more time with the content to understand and digest each level of depth that may lie within the product. An adjustment may not necessarily mean pumping out new content every two seconds the adjustment may simply be making the content last longer than usual.
