Roof Ventilation Systems That Reduce Moisture and Prevent Mould
Moisture can hide under roof panels and cause serious damage. It weakens timber, spoils insulation and leads to mould. Property owners and installers need reliable solutions. Installing the right roof ventilation systems cuts moisture levels and stops mould growth. Below is a clear path to tackle moisture in roof spaces and keep buildings safe and dry.
Tumblr media
Moisture Build-Up in Roof Spaces
Roofs trap heat from the sun. Warm air rises into the roof cavity. When this air meets cooler surfaces it turns into water droplets. Daily activities such as cooking and laundry also release moisture into the air. Without proper airflow, this moisture settles. Over weeks, damp patches form on insulation and timber. Mould can start in hidden spots. It feeds on damp wood and fibres in insulation. Left unchecked it spreads across large areas. Mould spores in living spaces can harm health. Children and people with allergies face higher risks. Repairing mould damage can cost thousands in labour and materials.
How Ventilation Prevents Damp
Good roof airflow works on two simple goals. Let warm moist air escape. Draw in cooler dry air. Passive vents use natural air movement. Eaves vents at the roof edge let air in. Ridge vents along the peak allow air out. This method needs no power. It relies on heat rising. Sometimes passive flow is not enough. On calm days air stalls in the cavity. A powered roof ventilation unit solves that. The fan pushes air out and keeps moisture moving. Combining both types gives the best result. The passive vents provide a base flow. The fan boosts circulation when needed. This mix adapts to all weather.
Actionable Strategies to Control Moisture
Seal Humid Zones
Block paths for moist air from bathrooms and kitchens. Fit exhaust fans that vent outdoors. Keep warm wet air out of the roof space.
Install Balanced Intake and Exhaust
Intake vents must match exhaust vents. If you only fit outlet vents you create a vacuum. Air leaks in through gaps. It can carry moisture with it. Balance intake and exhaust areas to keep the flow steady.
Choose Vents by Roof Type
Tile and metal roofs behave differently. Metal roofs heat and cool fast. They cause more condensation at night. Tile roofs hold heat longer. They can trap moisture. Select vent styles that suit the roof material and pitch.
Follow and Adapt the 1:300 Rule
Aim for one square metre of vent per 300 square metres of ceiling. This is a good starting point. But test the air movement after installation. Adjust vent sizes if air stalls or moisture remains.
Schedule Biannual Checks
Clear any debris that blocks vents. Leaves, dust and bird nests all reduce airflow. Inspect vents before hot weather and before cold weather. Start each season with clear vents.
Monitor with Simple Tools
Use a moisture meter to check timber and insulation panels. A small gadget can spot hidden dampness. Check any area that feels colder. Cold spots often hide condensation zones.
Record Readings
Keep a log of moisture readings and vent inspections. This shows trends over time. You can catch small issues before they turn into large repairs.
Train Installers and Owners
Teach the signs of poor ventilation. A rough patch of timber. A damp smell in the attic. Quick recognition leads to faster fixes.
Common Mistakes with Roof Ventilation Fan Installations
Mixing vent types without testing. A passive ridge vent and a high-power fan can conflict if intake is low.
Venting into the ceiling space instead of outside. This traps moisture under the tiles and in the battens.
Installing vents without weather in mind. Ignoring prevailing winds can block airflow or let rain in.
Forgetting intake vents. Many focus on the outlet vents and leave the entry side under-sized.
Relying on visual checks alone. Wet areas can hide under insulation. Use meters or thermal imaging to verify dryness.
Stable roof airflow keeps moisture levels low. It stops mould at its source. It extends the life of insulation and timber. It protects the health of everyone inside. Choosing the right mix of passive vents and a roof ventilation fan brings balance. Simple checks and clear records make maintenance easy. Small steps early save big repairs later. Think of ventilation as a quiet shield for the whole building. It works day and night. It needs little upkeep. Yet it delivers huge benefits in comfort and cost savings.

Why Timber Flooring Is a Popular Choice for Homes in Newcastle
Tumblr media
Timber flooring in Newcastle remains a preferred option for homeowners seeking durability, aesthetic appeal, and long-term value. The region’s coastal climate and mix of architectural styles—from heritage homes to modern builds—make timber an adaptable and practical flooring solution. Whether used in new constructions or renovation projects, timber floors offer warmth, resilience, and a timeless look that complements various interior designs.
What Makes Timber Flooring Suitable for Newcastle's Climate?
Newcastle experiences a temperate oceanic climate with warm summers and mild winters, which influences the performance of different flooring materials.
Moisture Resistance: While timber is sensitive to humidity, selecting stable species and applying protective finishes helps prevent warping from coastal moisture.
Thermal Comfort: Timber naturally regulates indoor temperatures, offering warmth underfoot during cooler months compared to tile or concrete.
Durability in High-Traffic Areas: Homes near beaches or with outdoor lifestyles benefit from hardwoods that withstand sand, salt air, and frequent foot traffic.
Adaptability to Indoor Conditions: With proper acclimatisation before installation and controlled indoor environments, timber floors perform well despite external weather variations.
Understanding how local conditions affect wood ensures long-lasting results.
What Types of Timber Are Commonly Used in Newcastle?
Different species offer varying levels of hardness, colour, and grain patterns, influencing both aesthetics and performance.
Blackbutt: A native Australian hardwood known for its strength and light golden tones, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.
Spotted Gum: Recognised for its striking grain and deep hues, this durable timber adds visual interest while resisting wear.
Brushbox: Offers a fine texture and medium hardness, suitable for moderate-use spaces like bedrooms or studies.
European Oak: Increasingly popular for its versatility, European oak accepts stains well and works in both traditional and contemporary settings.
Each species has unique characteristics that suit different home styles and usage needs.
How Does Timber Flooring Add Value to Properties?
Beyond its visual appeal, timber flooring contributes to both functional and financial benefits.
Increased Property Value: Real estate experts often note that homes with real timber floors are more attractive to buyers and can command higher resale prices.
Longevity: With proper care, quality timber floors last generations, reducing the need for replacement compared to synthetic alternatives.
Ease of Maintenance: Regular sweeping and occasional polishing maintain the floor’s appearance without requiring intensive cleaning.
Allergy-Friendly Surface: Unlike carpets, sealed timber floors do not trap dust mites or allergens, supporting better indoor air quality.
These advantages make timber a smart investment for homeowners.
What Installation Methods Are Available?
The way timber is installed affects both performance and suitability for different subfloors.
Nailed Down: Traditional method using nails through the tongue of the board, commonly used on timber subfloors.
Glue Down: Adhesive is applied directly to the subfloor, suitable for concrete bases and renovations where height restrictions apply.
Floating Engineered Floors: These consist of layered planks that click together and sit above an underlay, ideal for quick installations and multi-level buildings.
Batten System: Often used in older homes, battens are fixed to the subfloor with joists , allowing for airflow beneath solid boards.
Choosing the right method depends on structural conditions and renovation goals.
What Finishes Enhance Timber Flooring Performance?
Applying the correct finish protects the wood while enhancing its natural beauty.
Polyurethane Coatings: Provide a hard-wearing surface resistant to scratches and moisture, available in matte, satin, or gloss sheen.
Oil-Based Finishes: Penetrate the wood for a more natural feel and easier spot repairs, though they may require more frequent maintenance.
Hardwax Oils: Combine oils and waxes for a subtle sheen and enhanced protection, particularly suited to low-gloss, natural looks.
UV-Cured Lacquers: Applied in factory settings, these offer fast curing times and strong resistance to wear and fading.
Selecting the right finish ensures the floor meets lifestyle demands and environmental conditions.
Final Thoughts
Timber flooring in Newcastle offers a combination of elegance, resilience, and enduring value that aligns well with the region’s architectural diversity and lifestyle preferences. Whether restoring original floors in heritage homes or installing new surfaces in modern residences, choosing the right timber, installation method, and finish ensures lasting satisfaction. As design trends continue to embrace natural materials, timber remains a timeless and practical flooring choice.

Why Every Wellington Home Needs a Custom Wooden Shed
Tumblr media
Wellington's unique character comes from its stunning harbor views, vibrant cultural scene, and famously unpredictable weather. While the capital's charm is undeniable, homeowners know that living in the Windy City presents distinct challenges – from howling southerlies to sudden downpours. This is precisely why a custom wooden shed isn't just a luxury for Wellington homes; it's an essential addition that combines practicality with natural beauty.
Weather-Proof Storage That Actually Works
Wellington's weather doesn't follow rules. One moment you're basking in brilliant sunshine, the next you're battening down for a sudden storm. Traditional storage solutions simply can't handle this meteorological rollercoaster, but a well-built wooden shed can weather any storm.
Custom wooden sheds offer superior protection against Wellington's elements. Quality timber construction provides natural insulation that keeps your belongings dry during those infamous horizontal rain events. Unlike flimsy metal alternatives that can buckle under wind pressure or plastic sheds that become brittle in temperature fluctuations, wooden sheds are built to last through decades of Wellington's wildest weather.
The natural properties of wood also allow for proper ventilation, preventing the moisture buildup that can plague other storage options in our humid climate. This means your tools, outdoor furniture, and seasonal items stay in pristine condition year-round.
Maximizing Every Square Meter
Wellington property comes at a premium, making every square meter precious. A custom wooden shed transforms unused outdoor space into valuable storage and functional area. Whether you're dealing with a compact inner-city section or a sprawling suburban plot, the right shed design can maximize your property's potential.
Custom design means your shed fits perfectly into your available space and complements your home's architecture. Rather than settling for a generic box that clashes with your property's aesthetic, you can create a structure that enhances your outdoor environment while providing essential storage.
Consider the possibilities: a workshop for weekend projects, secure storage for expensive outdoor equipment, a potting shed for keen gardeners, or even a home office retreat. The flexibility of custom wooden construction means your shed can evolve with your changing needs.
Natural Beauty That Complements Wellington Architecture
Wellington's architectural landscape ranges from charming Victorian villas to sleek modern builds, and wooden sheds complement this diversity beautifully. Timber's natural warmth and versatility mean your shed can seamlessly integrate with any home style.
Custom wooden sheds age gracefully in Wellington's environment. While metal structures rust and plastic fades, quality timber develops character over time. With proper treatment, wooden sheds can handle Wellington's UV exposure and moisture levels while maintaining their visual appeal for decades.
The aesthetic benefits extend beyond the shed itself. Wooden structures create natural focal points in landscape design, providing opportunities for creative garden integration. Climbing plants, flower beds, and outdoor lighting can transform your shed into a genuine outdoor feature rather than just functional storage.
Built for Wellington's Unique Challenges
Wellington's geography presents specific challenges that custom shed builders understand intimately. The city's exposed position means structures must handle strong winds, while the varied terrain requires flexible foundation options. Coastal areas demand materials that resist salt air corrosion, while hillside properties need designs that work with challenging slopes.
Custom wooden shed builders familiar with Wellington conditions know which timber species perform best in our climate, how to orient structures for optimal wind resistance, and which foundation systems work on different soil types. This local expertise ensures your investment stands the test of time.
Investment Value That Makes Sense
Property improvements in Wellington's competitive market need to add genuine value, and a well-designed wooden shed delivers on this front. Quality outdoor storage and functional space increases property appeal and can contribute to overall property value.
Unlike temporary storage solutions that depreciate immediately, a custom wooden shed is a permanent improvement that pays dividends in convenience, aesthetics, and property value. The durability of quality timber construction means minimal maintenance costs over the shed's lifetime.
5 Essential Features Every Wellington Wooden Shed Must Have
When planning your custom wooden shed for Wellington conditions, certain features are non-negotiable for optimal performance and longevity.
1. Wind-Resistant Foundation and Anchoring Wellington's notorious winds demand robust anchoring systems. Your shed needs concrete foundations or treated timber bases with proper ground anchors that can handle gusts exceeding 100km/h without shifting or lifting.
2. Quality Weather Sealing and Ventilation Effective weatherproofing prevents moisture ingress during Wellington's sudden downpours, while strategic ventilation stops condensation buildup. Look for overlapping weatherboards, sealed joints, and ridge vents that work together.
3. UV-Resistant Timber Treatment Wellington's intense UV exposure can damage untreated wood rapidly. Quality timber treatment protects against sun damage, moisture, and insect attack, ensuring your shed maintains its strength and appearance for decades.
4. Reinforced Roof Structure Your shed's roof bears the brunt of Wellington weather. Reinforced trusses, appropriate pitch angles for rain runoff, and secure fixing systems prevent wind uplift and water pooling that could compromise structural integrity.
5. Flexible Internal Configuration Wellington properties vary dramatically in size and slope. Internal shelving, workbench options, and storage systems that can be reconfigured allow your shed to adapt as your storage needs change over time.
Getting Started with Your Wellington Wooden Shed
Choosing the right partner for your wooden shed project makes all the difference. Please be sure to look for builders who understand Wellington's specific requirements and have experience creating structures that handle our unique conditions.
The Wooden Shed Co.'s Wellington specialists bring local knowledge and custom design expertise to every project. Their understanding of Wellington's climate, building requirements, and architectural styles ensures your shed becomes a valuable addition to your property.
Conclusion
Every Wellington home faces the same challenges: unpredictable weather, premium property prices, and the need for storage solutions that actually work. A custom wooden shed addresses these challenges while adding natural beauty and lasting value to your property.
The combination of weather resistance, space optimization, aesthetic appeal, and long-term durability makes wooden sheds an essential addition for Wellington homeowners. With the right design and construction, your shed becomes more than storage – it's an investment in your property's functionality and appeal.
Don't let Wellington's weather dictate your storage options. Take control with a custom wooden shed that works as hard as you do, looks great year-round, and stands strong against whatever our capital city's climate throws at it.

Australian studio Austin Maynard Architects unveils a new residence, titled Clarke, for a family confronting the limits of their long-loved home. After more than a decade, especially after enduring the isolating lockdown, its interiors no longer served the daily needs of two adults working from home and two teenagers. The solution was to expand the home with a space that is layered and considered.
Clarke began as a single-story weatherboard cottage in need of breathing room. Instead of erasing the past, the team worked with it, retaining the home’s bones while reimagining its function. The result is an intricately stepped extension unified by a rhythm of timber battens that blur the thresholds between architecture and utility, form and privacy, old and new -- via designboom

Enhance Your Space with Timber Battens by Eco Timber Group
Timber battens are quickly becoming a favorite design element for architects, interior designers, and homeowners alike. Whether used for interior wall cladding, ceilings, or exterior facades, timber battens add a touch of natural beauty, warmth, and texture to any space. With the growing trend toward sustainable and aesthetically pleasing materials, timber battens offer a versatile solution that blends functionality with style.
At the forefront of this trend is Eco Timber Group, a brand renowned for its high-quality timber products. In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of using timber battens in your next project and why Eco Timber Group should be your go-to choice for premium timber solutions.
The Appeal of Timber Battens
Tumblr media
1. Versatility in Design
One of the most significant advantages of timber battens is their versatility. They can be used in various applications, from accentuating interior walls and ceilings to enhancing the exterior facades of buildings. Whether you’re aiming for a modern, rustic, or minimalist look, timber battens can be customized to fit your design vision. They can be arranged in horizontal, vertical, or diagonal patterns, creating unique visual effects that add depth and dimension to any space.
2. Natural Aesthetic
Timber battens bring the beauty of nature indoors, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The natural grain, color variations, and texture of wood add character and charm to any space. Unlike synthetic materials, timber battens age gracefully, developing a rich patina over time that enhances their appeal. This natural aesthetic is perfect for creating a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, making timber battens an ideal choice for projects that emphasize biophilic design.
3. Acoustic Benefits
Beyond their visual appeal, timber battens also offer practical benefits. One of the key advantages is their ability to improve acoustics within a space. The gaps between the battens help to break up sound waves, reducing echo and noise levels. This makes timber battens an excellent choice for areas where sound quality is essential, such as offices, restaurants, and entertainment spaces.
4. Sustainability
As environmental concerns continue to grow, the demand for sustainable building materials is on the rise. Timber battens are a sustainable choice, especially when sourced from responsible suppliers like Eco Timber Group. Wood is a renewable resource, and when harvested and managed properly, it has a much lower environmental impact compared to non-renewable materials like plastic or metal. Additionally, timber battens can be recycled or repurposed at the end of their life cycle, further reducing their environmental footprint.
Why Choose Eco Timber Group?
When it comes to selecting timber battens, quality and sustainability are paramount. Eco Timber Group stands out as a leader in the timber industry, offering a range of premium timber products that are both beautiful and environmentally friendly. Here’s why Eco Timber Group should be your first choice:
1. High-Quality Timber
Eco Timber Group is committed to providing only the highest quality timber. Their timber battens are crafted from carefully selected wood species, ensuring durability, stability, and a stunning natural finish. Whether you prefer the rich tones of Australian hardwoods or the subtle elegance of European oak, Eco Timber Group offers a variety of options to suit your design preferences.
2. Sustainable Sourcing
Eco Timber Group takes sustainability seriously. All their timber products are sourced from sustainably managed forests, ensuring that their operations do not contribute to deforestation or environmental degradation. By choosing Eco Timber Group, you can have peace of mind knowing that your timber battens are ethically sourced and have a minimal impact on the environment.
3. Customization and Flexibility
Eco Timber Group understands that every project is unique. That’s why they offer a wide range of customization options for their timber battens. cradle and batten flooring
"Cradle and batten" flooring is a type of subflooring system commonly used in construction, particularly for timber floors. It consists of a series of timber battens laid across a supporting structure (such as concrete or timber joists) with cradles placed beneath them to provide support and allow for ventilation. This type of flooring system is often used in buildings where a raised floor is desired, such as in homes with underfloor heating systems or in areas where moisture control is important.
Here's how the cradle and batten flooring system typically works:
Cradles: Cradles are usually made of plastic or metal and are placed directly onto the supporting structure, such as concrete or timber joists. They are spaced at regular intervals to support the timber battens.
Battens: Timber battens are then laid across the cradles, perpendicular to the direction of the floor joists. These battens provide a level surface for the final floor covering, whether it's timber boards, laminate, engineered wood, or another type of flooring material.
Ventilation: One of the key benefits of the cradle and batten system is the provision of ventilation space beneath the flooring. This helps to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to issues such as mold, rot, and floor warping.
Subfloor Insulation: Depending on the requirements of the building, insulation material may be placed between the battens to provide thermal insulation and improve energy efficiency.
Final Flooring: Once the battens are in place, the final flooring material can be installed on top. This could be timber floorboards, engineered wood, laminate, carpet, or tiles, depending on the desired finish.
Overall, the cradle and batten flooring system provides a durable and versatile solution for creating raised floors with good ventilation and moisture control capabilities. It's commonly used in both residential and commercial construction projects.

THE STORY BEHIND OUR EXPERTISE IN RECYCLED TIMBER
Tell us how Eco started:
I (Josh) went out to the market and noticed that there was not a lot outside the square when it came to timber and its products – there seemed to be a lack of creativity and inspiration for unique timber products. So, on that basis – Eco Timber started.
We decided to create a business that appealed for function, creativity and design to gain great outcomes.
We achieved this by capitalising on many of the existing attributes of a previous life – for example, Recycled Timber – A lot of interest was shown in Princes Pier Timbers which were fashioned by the sea – the timber had already had an interesting past with a story to tell and an interesting appeal for people to look at and talk about.
Going back a step – I always had an infinity to the environment and the enjoyment I got from being a part of it.
I wanted a career in something I could connect with. That started out in Landscape Gardening – being a part of the earth and creating concepts through land whilst I was at still at University – rocks, soil, earth, timber etc.
That then evolved or fuelled my career choice to then wanting to create things with timber, it was so adaptable as to what you could make with it. Through my interest in the areas of the environment, recycling, sustainability and doing the right thing and not waste our resources – it was entrenched in my psyche. Coming from an era where people didn’t really value old timber, if it had a nail in it then it was no good – everyone thought everything needed to be new.
I went and worked for a company for 14 years that did timber recycling, starting with de-nailing to ultimately running the company. It was at this point I realised I wanted and knew I could take my trade and knowledge and expand and develop my ideas into my own – which then birthed Eco Timber Group.
Our Quest for Excellence and Creativity
What does a general day look like?
Mornings are filled with running around trying to get three kids sorted and ready for school…percolated coffee off the stove to get the brain functioning and a lick and play with the dog and I am out the door.
With the travel time into work I process and plan the day ahead and what needs to be done often having it turned on its head even before I arrive some days. Things are always changing so you need to be adaptable when running a small business.
Moving between the head office in Richmond or the timber mill at Bacchus Marsh the day could involve anything from navigating curve balls between sales, deliveries, sourcing timber and staff.
Raising the Bar Through Innovation
Tell us about the charred cladding?
Charred cladding came out of the need for people wanting a colour fast cladding that maintained its colour long term without long going maintenance that can be associated with normal oiled finishes.
Charring timber is a process borrowed from traditional Japanese method known as Shousugiban. The process is applied to non-durable timbers as a preservation technique. By burning timber or charring the timber we are creating a carbon crust that is resistant to fading from sunlight.
Additionally, it also has benefits including creating a carbon armour that helps protect the timber from parasites and funguses that are often attributed to the degradation of timber, thus preserving the timber long term. All our charred timber products receive a BAL29 fire rating. We only use the best timber which is typically ironbark and or blackbutt.
Offering Numerous Possibilities
What other options are there?
Other charred options include screen battens, joinery items such as benchtops, furniture, flooring, decking and timber posts.
Unparalleled Performance
What makes the Eco Timber products one-of-a-kind?
We love timber. Everyone loves timber in our company. When you love something so much that energy and passion transfers into the products you make. Creative passion fuelled by the need to address functional solutions to the everyday applications makes our products stand out.
How does Eco Timber maintain such a high standard of Eco-Friendly products?
By using recycled timber and certified timber products that have a full chain of custody. Sustainable practises are critical in all industries if you wish for those industries to be ongoing into the future – it’s just common sense.
Premier Manufacturer of Sustainable and Recycled Timber Products
How do you source the best and most interesting timbers in Australia?
30 years of working in the recycled and sustainable timber industry give you good insight and you create a network of contacts. Demolition through to forestry, that allows us to enjoy a complete range of products. We can all enjoy recycled right through to new timbers.
Experience the Benefits of Sustainable Timber
What are the benefits of someone purchasing sustainable timber products in Australia?
It’s just like anything that sustainable it’s a market that needs to be managed so that it can be ongoing into the future. Sustainable by definition is: able to be maintained at a certain rate or level …so it can always be available today and for the future.
Enhance the Appeal of Your Home With Timber
What are some good ways of incorporating timber into the home?
Timber can be used in any areas of the home. Flooring is an obvious one but many people now are using timber as feature walls throughout their homes, timber battens and even lining the ceiling with timber has come into play.
Joinery is very popular – benchtops, tables, shelving and bookcases, moving into stair-treads, timber posts and beams.
How is timber cladding a good choice as opposed to brick or metal cladding?
It is warm. It is organic! It is natural. Personally, we think it looks better. It’s not a hard finish – it has life – it is formed naturally. Distinct from bricks and metal which are man-made. Each piece of timber has its own identity or character.

Choosing Roof Battens Bunnings
Tumblr media
Having a roof battens bunnings will allow you to keep your home protected. They come in a variety of different types and are great for adding to your home’s value. Whether you are looking to replace the ones on your home or you are building a new home, you should always choose a battens bunnings that are suitable for the job. This will help you save money in the long run.
Stratco Ceiling Batten
Stratco Ceiling Battens are an affordable and afforable way to achieve a level ceiling. The Stratco Ceiling Batten has a small footprint and provides an effective medium to high strength structural supporting structure for ceiling panels. Using battens as a supporting framework to plasterboard panels helps to ensure that the panels remain in tact, reducing the risk of cracks. They are also a useful secondary framework to battens on the roof to reduce the amount of rattling caused by wind.
The Stratco Ceiling Batten can be used for other purposes, such as supporting an existing truss or ceiling, providing a more stable platform for hanging ceiling panels and forming a brace for spans of 4.5 metres or more. It is available in stock lengths or can be ordered in custom lengths to suit your needs.
Stramit Top Hat 40
Whether you are building a residential steel roof or a commercial building, Stramit Top Hat 40 Roof Battens are the ideal solution. These metal roof battens are manufactured in 0.75mm gauge hi-tensile G550 steel and are coated with galvanised zinc alloy coating. They are suitable for roofs subject to cyclonic conditions. They are ideal for domestic, commercial and industrial applications.
Designed to resist buckling, warping and shrinking, the Stramit Roof and Ceiling Battens are lightweight and durable. They provide a sturdy, tried and tested alternative to timber. They can be installed on roof edges, corners and roof truss systems. They are suitable for use with steel or tile cladding. They are also designed to withstand foot traffic load during installation.
E-Battens
Stratco’s roof batten bunnings are made from hi-tensile zinc/al steel and are designed to nest and be stored easily. These battens are compatible with all pierce fix domestic roofing profiles. They are also easy to use and install. They have a textured surface for safe installation and are easy to cut with tin snips.
The battens are supplied in 6100mm lengths which are easy to handle. They have a textured surface for installation, a return edge for safety, and are compatible with all major domestic ceiling boards. These battens are also available in stock lengths.
The battens should be placed 20mm off the wall. You can use a power saw to cut them along the line. You should also mark the battens with a pencil to help determine their length.
Copper in roof battens
Roofing battens are a structural element of metal roofs. They distribute the load stresses and evenly distribute the weight across the roof, providing the necessary strength.
There are two main methods to install battens on a metal roof. The first method is used for roofing with steep slopes. The second method is for less steep slopes. Both methods use nominal 2" x 2" battens.
The preferred method for battens is to use tapered battens. They are formed vertically and a minimum of three inches in direction of flow is lapped over the cap. These battens are then attached with copper nails.
Battens are installed before the cleats. Cleats are used to attach metal roof panels to the battens. When installing cleats, it is important to ensure that the battens are installed at a distance of at least a half inch away from the cleat. This will ensure that the battens can be tightened after the cleats are installed.
BS 5534
BS 5534 is an excellent code of practice that covers different types of installation techniques for a pitched roof or vertical cladding. It also includes requirements for fixings to slates and tiles. It should be noted that this is a voluntary standard, but it is highly recommended.
For a new roof, it is important to choose the right roofing battens to ensure the longevity and performance of the roof. When selecting these, it is advisable to choose graded battens. These are more expensive than non-graded ones, but they are guaranteed to last the lifespan of the roof. Graded battens are also more durable and will save you a lot of time on site.
As a roofer, you need to know the latest industry standards and how to use them. This includes ensuring that your roofing battens are graded according to BS 5534.

Ivanhoe is a project designed by Modscape. Tucked neatly behind a weatherboard house in Melbourne’s leafy north-east sits a two-storey modular extension that is bold yet refined and has transformed the way the clients live. Photography by John Madden.
In need of extra space for their growing family the clients decided to employ a modular solution and extend their home rather than move. The extension is open, filled with natural light and beautifully compliments its leafy suburban location.
A new double-height entrance space has been created in the middle of the house providing a clean separation and demarcation between existing and new. As soon as you walk in the front door, your eye is drawn up to the circular skylight which casts directed light to the open stairs below. To accommodate for the sloping site, the extension is terraced down the block with a slight change in levels between the original house (which has now become the kids domain), the entrance way and the new modular living area. This helps to subtly define different zones, while the same Oak flooring used throughout provides continuity and flow.
Just beyond the new entrance foyer is the heart of the home – a large kitchen. From the outset, the clients’ brief revolved around this space with the arrangement, layout and finishes carefully considered. With ample storage space provided in the butler’s pantry, the kitchen is big enough for the whole family to cook, gather and socialise. The heroes of the space are the large floor-to-ceiling windows that capture clear vistas into the beautifully landscaped backyard and surrounding trees. Cornerless sliding doors in the dining area provide a seamless transition from outside to in – the result is a relaxed, light-filled gathering space with a fantastic outlook and connection to the external spaces.
Sustainably-sourced Blackbutt timber, dark-stained timber and Colorbond Diversaclad marry in harmony in this home. Yet it’s when the first floor timber form starts to curve and becomes a battened screen that gives way to the house’s personality. The screen is practical too – it provides additional sun shading and privacy ensuring there is no overlooking issues into the neighbour’s backyard. For the adults, the master suite upstairs offers a peaceful haven, cantilevering out to the garden.
The house includes many active and passive systems to ensure that it functions efficiently. Solar passive heating and cross ventilation, high levels of natural light, double glazing with thermal break frames, over insulation (like all of our modular homes), 2,000L rainwater tank, energy efficient lighting, water efficient fixtures and reverse cycle heating and cooling alongside a gas fireplace.
While the Modscape team were busy constructing the extension within the factory the clients were living in the house disruption-free. The clients moved out four weeks prior to the installation date as Modscape coordinated the demolition and site preparation. Installation of the modules occurred in just one day. And three weeks later the Modscape team had completed the works and the clients could put the kettle on.
Ivanhoe by Modscape Ivanhoe is a project designed by Modscape. Tucked neatly behind a weatherboard house in Melbourne’s leafy north-east sits a two-storey modular extension that is bold yet refined and has transformed the way the clients live.

The Origami House in Stirlingshire Scotland

The Origami House, Scotland
The Origami House features a new rear extension to a family home in the Buchlyvie Conservation Area of Stirlingshire. The ground floor plan of the existing cottage was composed of small, dark rooms which closed the house off from the expansive rear garden. The clients asked Loader Monteith to upgrade the home and bring the outside in.
What were the solutions? Loader Monteith were briefed to design a large ground floor extension to allow for plenty of natural light, a new dining space, study area, shower room and kitchen. The clients also specified the need for a new heating system and updated glazing throughout. In assessing the existing cottage and surrounding village context the architects explained that clever spatial planning would allow for a much smaller extension, which would still offer the clients excellent functionality and a closer connection to the garden beyond, but allow them to reinvest their initial budget into quality materials and finishes.
Loader Monteith placed the new kitchen at the heart of the plan which unlocked several opportunities within the constrained footprint of the 1980’s cottage. The galley-style kitchen connects the existing sitting room at the front of the home to the new dining space at the rear, allowing the family constant connection in separate yet connected zones of the ground floor.
A large wrap around window seat of Douglas fir characterises the rear extension, placing the clients directly into the garden. Overhead, a new glazed aperture maximises light flowing into the kitchen, ensuring the centre of the plan remains light and airy.
The exposed timber structureoverhead adds to the sense of space throughout, further enhanced by a palette of neutral, natural materials including soft white walls and a light microcement floor.
Loader Monteith designed a quiet study nook where the children can complete their homework while still having a visual connection to their parents in the kitchen through exposed douglas fir shelving, now home to the clients’ collection of turned wood sculptures.
How is the house now? The clients can now strip muddy boots and coats off in the new side entrance which leads into the utility and shower room, before opening into the ultra-matte formica kitchen, custom built by Archispek.
Before purchasing the house, the clients inquired at the local council as to whether development of the cottage would be permitted, being located in a sensitive conservation area.
In line with the planning offices’ response and the strict planning rules of the Buchlyvie Conservation area, Loader Monteith “folded” the extension’s pitched roof to adhere to language of other buildings in the village, reducing the visual bulk of the addition while still adding a generous volume to the interior. The architects specified external timber batten cladding to soften the form of the house within its verdant garden setting.
Loader Monteith firmly believes that using the space we have efficiently is the best way to build sustainably, allowing clients to reinvest budgets into quality design that enhances the day to day experience of the buildings they occupy.
At Origami House, the clients wanted a large rear extension complete with living and dining area, kitchen and study space. By reorganising the ground floor plan, Loader Monteith was able to advise their clients that an extension of only 15 square metres would be more than sufficient to meet their brief, reducing the total project budget.
Much of the budget went towards sustainable interventions like triple glazing, thick insulation, a new heating system and timeless Douglas Fir joinery. The house now functions seamlessly for the busy family, offering practical, usable spaces finished with natural, durable materials.
