I wanted to bring a bit of nature to the client’s interior and the long format made me think of Monet’s large waterlily painting that’s in MoMA’s collection, so I used that as a starting point. Amen, and the process starts over every time you make something new. My crappy paintings are the lessons that lead to the good ones.

I feel like a lot of people my age are so terrified of at first making bad art (writing, painting, music, etc.) that they are so discouraged to start or finish anything unless it's immediately brilliant.

Standing under I Wrote Some Poems That You Could See (2018) after it was installed at the Philadelphia International Airport in Terminal A-East recently. Feeling incredibly blessed and humbled by the fact that over the next year, this work will be able to be experienced by potentially hundreds of thousands of people traveling through PHL. It also means a lot that this is the first public viewing of a new body of work that’s entirely different than what I’ve shown up until now. The genesis of this work goes back to the late 80s, when I was thinking about language and painting; I wasn’t into the idea of people “reading” the paintings, so I made up my own ‘alphabet’ of a sort. It didn’t last long, as I was in a period of rapid discovery and moved on to other ideas. Whenever I talk to art students, I always mention the non-linear nature of creativity and artistic development. Unlike how it’s usually presented in art history courses and books, after some time in their practice, a lot of artists begin to reflect on and have dialogues with older ideas that were once thought finished. This is where I stand in my practice. Looking back and selectively bringing old ideas forward sometimes helps me with getting out of creative blocks and can propel me onto a new trajectory. My first full day in the new studio yesterday was spent opening boxes, figuring out storage and finding my studio shorts before anything else. Priorities 😉 • • • • • • It might not look like it, but lots of progress was made. Standing in the middle of all of this, I can’t imagine how I managed to fit all of it into my old apartment space, but somehow I did it-necessity being the mother of invention and so forth. Before I left, I was determined to get my lights up in the entryway, a holdover tradition from the old space where I kept string lights up all year long in the hallway. #tbt :: Early glyph painting, late ‘90s, ‘96-7ish? Oil on canvas, It wasn’t dated nor signed. I found it covered at the back of a stack of boxes in a closet. I remember making this one with a lot of Dorland’s wax medium mixed in with the oils. Loved the matte look but over time, the wax medium made the paint too brittle, causing the surface to chip and crack easily. Took a few shots and properly destroyed it the other day. It was better to not have to deal with moving an old painting that was falling apart.
