Prompt: ‘Forbidden’
Notes: For Day 2 of @empyreanevents Brennaolin Week.
Summary: Before Conscription Day of Brennan’s second year at Basgaith, he seeks Naolin out behind General Sorrengail’s back.
-----------------------
Damn it Mom, why did you have to stick your nose into my business?
Silence reigned through the stone halls of the Riders Quadrant as Brennan quietly tipoted down the hall that led to a discrete set of stairs on the outer walls of the quadrant. The temperature had cooled with the onset of September, but Brennan still felt sweat clinging to the nape of his neck and spine. He wasn’t usually this… nervous of General Sorrengail, but at the same time, he knew the only reason he’d survived her wrath this time in their last argument was because she’d still been able to retaliate and get the last word in. He breathed through his nose to tamp down the now muted flare of anger in his heart, teeth gritting as he remembered his mother’s furious expression. I got this far on my own damn merit, Mom, it’s not my fucking fault he was a year ahead when we met. But the joke is on you. I’ve been in these halls so fucking often that I know them by heart.
He paused at the top of the hall and leaned just enough around the corner to determine that the corridor was empty save for the one guard that was near General Sorrengail’s office–and subsequently, her quarters. His eyes had long since adjusted to the dark, but even if he was blind, he knew he could still navigate the halls from memory alone. He glanced down the opposite direction, satisfied that the other direction of the corridor was empty without any guards.
What room are you in?
The plate on the door is blank. I’m not even one of her sons and I feel like I’m in timeout.
You think you have it bad, you try growing up with her.
Brennan watched the guard, silently counting the seconds between the guard’s paces. As he expected, the guard was from the infantry. Someone who wouldn’t be able to break into his mother’s office. Once the guard turned on his heel to walk away from Brennan, Brennan held his breath and slipped into the corridor, moving quickly yet silently down the hall away from the pacing guard. Colonel Aetos’s quarters were in the opposite direction as well and not far from General Sorrengail’s–Brennan’s father had made a comment about it once–which, now that Brennan re-examined his mental layout, made sense.
After all, Naolin, the newly minted wingleader of Fourth Wing, was unofficially being punished. It wouldn’t do to put him too close to the leadership hub of the Riders Quadrant.
His door was at the end of the hall, and Brennan prayed ‘Zihnal, please let this be the right door’ before carefully tapping the door with his knuckles. Tap…tap…tap-tap-tap…tap.
A heartbeat passed, and Brennan stepped back as he heard movement within the room. The door let out a faint creak as Naolin pushed the door open, a faint frown marring his features. The suspicion washed away, however, as Naolin stared at Brennan first in surprise then in excitement. “Quick, before Lieutenant Tavers sees you,” he whispered, grabbing Brennan’s collar and pulling Brennan into the room. “Man’s such a kiss-ass, a cricket can’t sneeze in this hall without General Sorrengail knowing.”
“Par for the course for him,” Brennan whispered back as Naolin closed the door behind him. Brennan turned around to face Naolin as he said “He’s been assigned to Mom as a guard for a while now. Before Basgaith, Mira used to–” the last of his words disappeared as Naolin grabbed his collar and kissed him deeply. He clasped his hands over Naolin’s as he whispered “I missed you. I know it’s only been a couple days but it’s so fucking hard to get here” when they finally parted to catch their breaths.
Naolin let out a soft chuckle as he gently guided Brennan so that they both switched places. “What matters is that we’re here together now, you did everything on your own merit, and even General Melgren agrees…squad leader,” he said, breaths mingling as Brennan let him push Brennan up against the wall.
Brennan snorted as he leaned forward to kiss Naolin again. “I wish I could have been in the room for that conversation. The way Vi described it to me, I would have thought Mom was going to explode when he overruled her on the promotions…wingleader,” he said, lifting his chin to give Naolin access to his throat. “Granted, I owe Vi big time now since she passed those tidbits along for me, maybe I’ll get her a book or something once I graduate and go wherever my post is. Which you know Mom will make sure is far from you.”
Naolin let out a quiet laugh as he rested his forehead against Brennan’s. “Scribes would make the perfect spies. I still can’t believe that your mom and Melgren had that argument when she was still in the room. They probably forgot she was even there and she was too spooked to say something,” he said as he looked up at Brennan. Brennan felt his heart swell and flutter when he saw the familiar grin that had been what initially caught his eye during his first year in the quadrant. He gave into the urge to touch Naolin, and ran his fingers across the new patch on Naolin’s sleeve.
Naolin was quiet as he watched Brennan’s fingers. “We’ll still be together, we can still write even once I’ve graduated. I’ll make high friends so that we can be posted together” he said after a moment, and Brennan looked up to meet familiar and warm green eyes.
“Where are you hoping to get posted?” Brennan asked, straightening his shoulders before reaching to start tugging at the collar of Naolin’s leathers.
Naolin huffed as he began undoing the lower clasps of Brennan’s jacket. “I want to go somewhere cold, like home. Tairn, the big baby that he can be, wants to go somewhere south. He also wants to stay close to Sgaeyl, she’s not keen on leaving the Vale right now for some reason. He obviously won’t tell me why,” he added, wrinkling his nose.
Brennan hesitated, a sudden memory popping into his mind. He slowed his fingers, feeling Naolin pause as well in response. “I…that reminds me…” he looks at Naolin. “I was practicing mounts the other day since the landing field was empty. Marbh and I were on a roll when he suddenly jerked away and looked towards the Vale, like he heard something I couldn’t. He then seemed to relax, he even looked like he was about to launch without me. But when I asked about it, he said that Sgaeyl was in a pissy mood and was about to start a fight with the other dragons about a den matter. Then he said he was gonna stay far away from the dens as long as possible to avoid her, Tairn apparently wasn’t gonna help calm things down,” he explained, fingers curling on Naolin’s shoulders as he felt Naolin’s fingers slip through the fabric of his jacket in search of skin. “Maybe…maybe that’s why Sgaeyl doesn’t want to leave the Vale,” he adds, voice catching when he felt Naolin’s fingertips ghost along his stomach and sides. “That den thing” he said, leaning his head back against the wall as Naolin grazed teeth along his throat.
Naolin hummed, and Brennan closed his eyes at the vibration against his throat. “We have to go where we’re ordered, Tairn and Sgaeyl can sort themselves out. Now shush, I’ve been dying over here because I haven’t seen you all day” Naolin whispered before he returned to kissing the column of Brennan’s throat.
Brennan started to laugh, but felt his eyes flutter closed as he suppressed a moan, the thrill of sneaking around behind his mother’s back snaking up his spine even as he clutched Naolin’s shoulders tighter.

The Legend of Master Tipot: The Enlightened Pourer
In a quiet village nestled between the ancient hills of the Forgotten Province, where the mist clings like bureaucracy and the crows recite tax codes in their caws, there lived a peculiar monk named Tipot. His statue, now immortalized in suburban gardens and novelty gift shops across the land, has become a curious icon. With his cherubic smile, rotund cheeks, and a teapot forever frozen in…

The phone simply keeps on ringing, regular intervals of eerie silence between insistent calls. Whenever a hand picks it up to reply, no voice on the other side says a thing - just the "cluck" of an interrupted call, and silence again. An entire afternoon of this silly, uncalled for joke. Until, at the umpteenth call, Venigni is finally the one who answers. There is silence still, at first - but a different one, an almost... surprised one. Ecstatic. Barely a *gasp* could be heard from the other side; a mechanical sound, hollow inside a metal chest. « If it isn't my good friend! ». Loud, chuckling, a voice that he knows so awfully well runs through the cables and into his ear, as if wanting to pierce it, hurt him just a little more. That would be fun! « Oh, Venigni... you're a God send. How is the little child living? How have you been feeling?~ »
The phone of the hotel had been ringing for a while, now. Enough to make Venigni's curiosity peak -- that incessant ringing, the fact that Polendina seemed to ignore it almost on purpose, the fact that nobody in the hall was either present to answer it or didn't seem to pay much mind, as if it wasn't their job to answer it. To be fair, it rarely, if ever rang. Even in the golden ages of Krat, Antonia much preferred speaking face to face with someone rather than talk via phone, more often than not ending his occasional calls by telling him to come by in a few minutes and little else. As far as he knew until then, the phone didn't even work. Any did, in Krat, certainly broken in a way or another during the frenzy.
He let it ring for a good hour before giving up and following his impulses, giving Pulcinella a quick shrug and a comment about how "it's rude to leave someone hanging for long, even if it might be just a prank call!" before tipoteing to that darn thing, picking it up with an equally delighted and timid "Yes?"
And then everything came crashing down, directly on his skull. Oh, it was a prank alright. Not a funny one, either. The puppet on the other side didn't even have to introduce himself before realization dawned on the prince of Krat, his eyes widening behind his glasses as he got visibily tense and pale. It's hard to forget the voice of your parents' killer.
"…Arlecchino."
A statement, rather than a question. Low enough for himself alone to hear… that is, unless Pulcinella approached him too in the meantime.
"How can this…? Pinocchio said you were…?!"
…why does he feel like he's been punched in the heart?

Day 1 of attempting Pixel Art. I spent a few hours messing around with tools, and I thought I’d start simple.
Simpler was easier. Meet Angel Tipot!
