Why the Stormcloaks have no hope of winning the Civil War and beyond
Been replaying Skyrim and it's pretty obvious the inevitable outcome, regardless of The Last Dragonborn's intervention or not.
To me, the most likely outcome is TLDB never intervenes and the Season Unending scenario comes to play. Where they bleed each other out and overall weaken the Empire and by a stroke of luck, Tullius or Ulfric dies and the Thalmor sweeps in and wipes the Stormcloaks out.
My disgust for Ulfric's pride and racism and his pointless murder of Torygg aside. This Rebellion and Civil War is pointless and the outcome is plain to see.
Ulfric was already captured. The war was pretty much over. Alduin unknowingly saved his ass and the Stormcloaks lived to fight another day.
Problem is that The Thalmor wanted the war to continue.
According to Ulfric's dossier, Ulfric was captured by the Thalmor during the Great War, and made to believe that information he gave up under interrogation was pivotal in taking the Imperial city when they had in fact already done so. After the war and his escape, Ulfric’s role in the Markarth Incident was apparently valuable to the Thalmor’s “overall strategic goals” in Skyrim. That goal being, as I learned, is for the civil war in Skyrim to continue as long as possible. At Helgen, the reason for Elenwen’s presence was to stop Ulfric’s execution, but Alduin’s attack meant they did not need to take direct action. Not only that, but they’ve apparently been funneling indirect aid to the Stormcloaks.
And yes, the dossier says a Stormcloak victory is to also be avoided. But point remains. The Stormcloak rebellion was a Thalmor investment to bleed out the Empire to weaken them. They knew with the right prodding, agitation, and a specific leader, rebellion would be inevitable. Now, men are fighting against men, and the elves sit back and watch with glee as their enemies destroy each other.
And yes. Hammerfell. The thing about that is, Hammerfell is far more equipped than the Stormcloaks to fend off the Thalmor and they are actually winning. I can't see Ulfric forming an alliance with Hammerfell. He's far too isolationist, arrogant and prideful to see the bigger picture. And the Stormcloaks didn't rebel against the Thalmor. They killed their lawful King and rebelled against The Empire.
If you talk to Sybil Stentor, you will know Ulfric is completely full of shit.
Why was Torygg killed? "Because Ulfric needed a symbol. Someone he could defeat that represented the Empire, the White-Gold Concordat, the banning of Talos worship. Torygg's father Istlod had held Skyrim together for nearly twenty-five years. When he died, Torygg became that symbol. "So the war started when Istlod died?"No. Even after Istlod died, the moot voted to make Torygg High King of Skyrim. But Ulfric was at that moot, continually talking about Skyrim's independence in terms just shy of treason. I don't think Ulfric knew how much Torygg respected him for that. If Ulfric had asked Torygg directly to stand up, to declare independence, Torygg might have done it. "Why didn't Torygg ever declare independence?"Because the Dominion is a sleeping beast that Skyrim cannot slay alone. Because many Nords are part of the Imperial army even now. Because the food and resources we get from the Empire are important to our people. Because even if we can't openly worship him, Talos the god was once Tiber Septim the man, and this is his Empire. And Torygg wasn't ready to let it fall apart."
From King Torygg himself when meeting him in Soverngarde
"When Ulfric Stormcloak, with savage Shout, sent me here, my sole regret was fair Elisif, left forlorn and weeping. I faced him fearlessly - my fate inescapable, yet my honor is unstained - can Ulfric say the same?"
It was murder. The only ones who say Ulfric didn't kill Torygg with the thumm is Ulfric and his followers.
The other problem is this. The Thalmor already have a presence in Skyrim. Eventually The Thalmor will deal with the Stormcloak problem. Dragonborn or no Dragonborn, who's to say the Thalmor just won't send assassins to kill Ulfric after the Stormcloaks win? I mean, if they sent that one Khajit assassin to kill Malborn, you SERIOUSLY don't think they won't do the same for Ulfric? Or hell, they don't even have to send an assassin, they could convince the Dunmer of the Grey Quarter and the Argonians on the docks and even the Khajit on the outskirts of Windhelm to band together and kill Ulfric. Then it's divide and conquer. They pacify and destroy the rebellion.
And yes, The Empire did not help the Thalmor presence in Skyrim. But Ulfric is the reason the Thalmor started to enforce the ban. Alvor claims that nobody really payed attention to the Concordat and still had their own personal shrines to Talos after the war. Unfortunately for the Empire, once Ulfric started making noise, they had no choice but to enforce the ban on Talos lest the Dominion declare war before they were ready.
People really think the Stormcloaks can solo the Dominion when their leader was straight up captured by Tullius and would've been beheaded if not for a literal Dragon. Not only that, couldn't even beat a weakened, wounded and broke Empire at a mere fraction of its power without outside intervention in the form of the Dragonborn.
The Imperials were not even the real Imperial Legion. It was ONE GENERAL conscripting the locals into a Militia.
And the best part of it is that Tullius's troops are not equipped like actual Imperial legion infantry should be. They are equipped like scouts. And he almost won the war with fucking scouts. In a month? That's insane.
The best part is while so many stormcloak fans don't realize that Ulfric is aware of this if you try and attack solitude while the Emperor is there Ulfric will freak the fuck out. Because he knows they can't fight the actual Empire and doing something while the emperor is in town means they'll send an actual Imperial force to do something.
This is why this civil war is so tragic. The only "imperial oppressors" Stormcloaks fight is Tulius himself, otherwise it's just Nord rebels against Nord loyalists who were mostly volunteer farmers, basically citizen militia and few old veteran Nord legionnaires close to retirement like Rikke. All this killing was so pointless and stupid, but of course Ulfric and his lapdogs are far too prideful and shortsighted to see it.
And if that's not enough, this video pretty much confirms an Imperial victory
youtube
Important fact from the Stormcloak victory if you clear Fort Neugrad with the Stormcloak missive
"Lord Ulfric, Though we drove the Emperor's dogs from Fort Neugrad, they still nip at our heels. The chaos in Helgen is bad enough, but now I have word of a new Imperial force assembling in the south, ready to advance on our position as Pale Pass is clear. Send reinforcements, or all our gains will be for naught."
Meaning that if by some miracle the Stormcloaks secure victory by their own means or the Dragonborn's intervention, there will be Imperial reinforcements being sent to squash this rebellion.
It's all but inevitable to me that the Stormcloak Rebellion will fail in the end.
If you actually pay attention to General Tullius, you will know that this peace between the Empire and the Dominion won't last.
"Look around the room and you'll see what we're up against. Just between you and me, a lot of what Ulfric says about the Empire is true."
"I swear Elenwen holds these parties just to make the Empire look bad. Almost makes me want to join the Stormcloaks."
"The only reason I'm here is because my refusal to attend would cause a diplomatic incident."
Is there anything more I can do for the Legion?"Ulfric is dead and his army destroyed. There's not much more I could ask of you. The gods, however, I suspect, may have plans for you elsewhere. That said, Stormcloak true believers are still operating out of hidden military camps in the hills. If you encounter any on you [sic] travels, kill them. With luck, they'll soon lose heart and return to their homes and families. If not, we'll be forced to put them all to the sword. "Will you return to Cyrodiil?"No, I suspect Skyrim to be my home for many years. Can't say I'll ever get used to the damn cold, or understand these Nords... but I've come to respect them. The harshness of Skyrim has a way of carving a man down to his true self. "Now that Ulfric is dead, will there be peace?"The fiercest of the remaining rebels will continue to harass us, but by and large, the people here desire peace. What I'm not so sure about is the peace we've made with the Thalmor. But we'll keep that between the two of us, alright?"

To me, the best outcome is for TLDB to convince Ulfric and Tullius to pull their heads out of their asses and see the bigger picture. Unite The Empire and the Stormcloaks to fight The Thalmor. All while TLDB becomes the new Emperor.

TLDB: *introducing Inigo to Nebarra* And this one here is Nebarra; full-time jackass, part-time smart-ass, and he's an equal opportunity racist, too. Funnily enough, he's one of the least sexist people I've met, for a racist. He's also one of the best swordsmen out there, and there's few finer that you could need by your side. Don't kill him if he's being stupid, just be mean to him back or kill him with kindness. He likes it when you're mean to him, and being as sweet as pie is a sure fire way to get under his skin. Take your pick.
Inigo: *taking notes while dreading adventuring with Nebarra, ears flat against his head* I see.
Nebarra: *has whiplash from the insult, compliment, implication sandwich* Hey- what- Did you just imply that I enjoy pain? And also-
TLDB: *shrugging, and cutting him off* Well, I wouldn't go that far. Not enough evidence to make that accusation, after all.

Do you plan on having Tally interact or make comments on faction questines? I half expected him to say something sassy/snarky about TLDB becoming archmage after like - a ingame week (in my case kept getting distracted) - or mocking arcano.
Eventually, yes.

THIS POST COVERS THE CONTENTS OF THE LUCIEN FLAVIUS QUESTLINE THAT COULD SPOIL THE EXPERIENCE FOR SOME
If you do not wish to have the storyline be spoiled for you, do not proceed.
TLDB = The Last Dragonborn
I feel like a fic, or even a canon event, where TLDB and Lucien getting into a big fight over his BS at Dumzbthar would be very fitting.
I mean, the guy literally went behind the TLDB's back and gave the force that wanted to to kill them and use their bodies as fucked up little puppets, a vessel in which it could eventually do fucked up things. All because he wants the knowledge it has and he thinks he can teach it to be nice while also subsequently enslaving Dumzbthar further.
And the apology he gives is the biggest non-apology of the century, so I think for character development TLDB and Lucien need to either have an argument or have some other friction about this, to be frank, betrayal.
After all, Lucien is essentially building a working relationship with a Daedra that spoke of both TLDB and Lucien like objects and fantasized about -- and likely still imagines -- desecrating TLDB's corpse for his own gain. That whole ordeal was highly disturbing, violating, and traumatizing for the both of them, but especially for TLDB. And during the initial threat, Lucien could have tried to run and leave TLDB to fend for themselves when he learned that Dumzbthar wanted them and not him, or have even done worse, but he didn't. He stood and fought next to his dearest friend.
And as far as threats go, consider that Alduin wanted to eat the souls of the valiant dead and end time, Miraak wanted out of Apocrypha by any means, and Harkon wanted to dominate the world, but Dumzbthar is incredibly personal in its threat which makes him somehow worse for TLDB to deal with.
NOW I DON'T THINK LUCIEN'S A BAD FOLLOWER MOD OR HAS A BAD STORY
In fact, I think he's fantastic and his story feels 3-dimensional because he has flaws. One of those flaws being that he's a massive egg-head and doesn't know how to 1. Make friends. 2. Be a friend. 3. Keep friends. 4. Make amends.
He's a nepo-baby finally stepping out into the world, and he's going to make mistakes and bad choices, but that doesn't make him a bad person or character. He knows that he loves his friends, but it takes experience to understand how his actions can hurt them. He doesn't think that his actions can hurt others, because he likely grew up feeling like he couldn't do much else other than academia, so to be 20-something and finally making his first friends is naturally rough for him.
Him learning to be a friend and make amends with friends is pivotal for his character development, and I'm here for it.
